Of Storms and Sidequests

Lura laid out on the branch as he reflected on a few things. First was as usual, his birth mother. He knew that he would never meet her unless he asked. Did he want to? Not really. She helped his Dad start the family they wanted, that’s great. He and his brother existed thanks to her. Though his family was far from ‘normal’...which by the account of one snobby brat in town, meant that you had to have a Female Mommy and a Male Daddy. He rolled his eyes thinking about that. He had two Dads. That was fine. Well, honestly he called his more energetic parent Dad, while the calmer parent was Pops. He heard about his birth, it was during a wicked storm that shook the whole house!! That was pretty cool. He and Lycothyyr, his twin, came in crying in time with a thunder crash. He felt like the storm was a perfect symbol of their family. High energy and a force to be reckoned with!!!

The other thing he thought about was his parents. He blinked as he swung his legs up so he was sitting. His Dad was awesome!!! He was always playing with him and his brother. Always moving like the lighting that shook them. While his Pops, well…Pops was calmer. Like the clouds that hold the storm together. He smiled at the thought. Yeah. His Dad was like the Lighting that shook the earth, while his Pops was the cloud that held him. That made sense. He blinked a moment, if that was the case…what were he and Lyco? Oh he knows!! They were the Thunder! The crash after the Lighting. He fist pumped. That’s what they were, they were the real fear. He giggled as he leapt down to run into the house. A whirlwind of childish energy as he found Dep, the Janarim that his Pops raises.

“Dep!! Let's go play!!!” He called out. Giggling when the beast got up to follow after him. Dep was a good adventuring buddy. Lura could go anywhere he wanted to as long as he had one of the Radaku’s or Dep with him. He liked that his parents were trusting in the beasts they raised. As he walked out he found a note left for him by his Dad.

‘Your Pops and I put this bag together. Make sure you take it with you. We’re out in town and will be back in a few hours. If you're not home when we get back, I’m coming to find you.’ Lura squeaked as he turned to grab the pack nearby. He shifted it to look inside and let out a happy squeal. Some of his favorite snacks were tucked away inside as well as a few pouches he used for collecting small items. Lura called out as he dashed out with Dep. “Dep let's go climbing!!!”

The Janarim barked twice as it followed the youngling out into the woods. The two went down a well used path that they carved out themselves. Lura had done many small quests with the bigger beast over the past year. Climbing the rocks was to find more interesting rocks to bring home. Though everyone had said between the twins, Lura was the calmer one. That was only because Lura had always taken to watching others. He liked to watch people as well as the beasts. Watching people allowed him to see things others didn’t. Like how when Pops was nervous he would play with one of the smaller braids he had in his hair. Or when his Dad was really upset he had a tendency to clench his fists into his pants. Lura had only seen his Dad mad, once.

He had been really reckless on one quest. The youngling had gone into a tree with a new thing in it, only to find out it was something sticky. When a weird big bug came at him and he saw his Pops use his bow for the first time, he then saw his Dad angry. Pops had brought him home, both males were bloody. Pops had a shoulder wound from that bug, while Lura had hurt his hip. A mark he still had to this day. He learned that the bug was called a Menzuri, a deadly beast that had killed younglings before. He was lucky that his Pops was nearby. He was lucky that Dep was too, the Janarim’s howl was what tipped his parents off that he was in real danger. He was crying as he was tended to by the Healer. His Pops didn’t let him go as the elder was rocking him.

When Lura had looked over to his Dad, he saw the fist in the pant leg first. Then he looked up to the elder’s eyes. He knew later that his Dad had gone out to take care of all the Menzuri within a certain range of the homestead after that. The one that attacked Lura had escaped his Pops, but not his Dad. That one’s mandibles were on display above one of the training pens his parents used. A reminder to the youngling to never wander too far. He learned that lesson the hard way. Any time he tried to apologize he was told that he wasn’t at fault, that he was okay to be a youngling.

He blinked as his mind wandered. He was snapped back into reality when Dep nudged his hand after he had slowed to a stop to look at a nearby flower field. Lura jumped. “Sorry buddy…”

He petted the beast before he looked to the path. “I know, we’re nearly there. Let’s finish the walk!”

He smiled as they finished the 20 minute walk to the rock path. It wasn’t a long path, just a big pile of rocks that weren’t good for house building. Lura had found a few cool looking rocks over the months here. He started to look around a few smaller piles. What he meant by ‘climbing’ was really just him walking up some of the bigger piles. He longed for the day that he could climb a real cliff. He would have to do that with his Dad. Pops might have a heart attack.

The youngling started to shift through the smaller piles, oh that was a cool shape. Looking like the moon at the end of the month. It was pitch black for some reason. Nearly a perfect circle. He held it up to notice that it was actually a glass orb. Oh that was neat!!! He moved the pack to his front so he could put the orb in the small pouch inside of it. Taking out a mini loaf of bread he nibbled on it, giving some to Dep as he used his other hand to move a few pebbles. He found another dagger shaped rock, followed up by a rock that looked like Dep’s paw. He smiled at that one. He matched it to the beast’s paw. “It looks like your paw!!”

Dep huffed at him as he looked unimpressed with the comparison. His paw was far better looking than some dumb rock. He rolled his eyes as the youngling put the rock away anyways. Lura chuckled as he finished the loaf off, taking some of the water from the waterskin that was also in the bag. His Pops really did look out for them a lot. He packed a good snack bag, made sure his collection pouch was there so he could keep his treasures hidden, and made sure that the waterskin was filled. He smiled. His Pops was the best. He went back to digging at the edge of the pile again. Trying to see if he could find something cool to bring back to his Pops. He gasped when he found something shining.

Aha!!! It was another glass orb, this one was clear!! Those were really cool to look at. He held it up to see it catch the light. Oh this was awesome!!! He looked back to the pile where he got it from. Seeing more glass orbs of various sizes. He reached in for a few more to take home as treasure for his family. He could give Lyco some as well. The biggest ones he’d give his parents. Like that big black orb and the big clear one. He smiled as he got quite a haul of those orbs. “Sweeet!!!”

He got up seeing that it was getting darker. Uh oh, he was out of time. “Come on Dep!!! We gotta run back. I got caught up finding these orbs.”

He and the beast started to book it back down the trail. The youngling laughed as Dep was trying to outrun him. As they got closer to the homestead, Lura saw lights lighting up the windows as well as the open door.

“Come on Dep, let's clean up before food!!” The youngling called as he dashed in. He could hear his Fathers in the kitchen. Giggling as he could hear his Pops squeaking at something his Dad was most likely doing. He stopped to point at the Janarim. “Stop! You have mud on your paws!!”

Dep slid to a stop at the front door. Moving to the wash basin by the door itself to wash off his paws. Once done, the beast pranced in like a brat. Lura was in the wash room to clean himself up, humming as he got a basket to wash his new treasures in. Once that was done he picked up the two largest orbs. Smiling as he turned to Dep. “Dad gets the black orb, because he’s the sneaky one. Pops gets the clear orb, because he’s bright!!”

The childish mind was one of love and adoration for his family. This was a good sidequest indeed.

Heights

There was a place in his Pops old camp that made Lura sad. It was a place of statues and hills. Radaku’s that had names carved into them to remember those who came before. Names of family that he’d never get to meet. It was a sad reminder that life was a cycle. He sat under one Radaku, staring up at a few names.

“Issao...Atheria…” he muttered as he reached up to the two most recent names. “Pops said…this was our family.”

He looked up to the silent youth that usually walked these paths to keep them in order. One of his cousins, he was told when they were introduced. Odreen. Was a bit older than him and his brother. Not the only cousin they had. Odreen had a sibling as well, Omaru. The two lived with their parents in the Old Camp, working alongside his family to fix it up for others to live in once again. It was hoped that more family would return to its embrace. However, Odreen had expressed that it was a vain hope. Whatever that meant.

“They are. Your Grandparents on your Pop's side.” Odreen muttered before he turned. “We need to get back. Your help is needed for rebuilding a radaku pen.”

Lura blinked as he got up to follow his cousin, he looked to the taller youth who walked with a straight back. Didn’t that hurt? It was like Odreen had a pole up his spine or something. He sighed as he walked with his hands tucked into his vest as they walked.

“Dren.” he paused to see if the other was listening. A head tilt was his cue. “Are you mad that we’re here?”

The move into the Old Camp was a bit recent. It had taken the young parents and their younglings a few months to get everything over here. Once they had set up in one of the old hut areas, it was a rebuild that seemed a bit out of place. His Dad wanted walls, whereas most of the ruins around them showed tents. It was an uphill battle with the landscape to pick the right spot. Then it was a task to help Odreen’s family rebuild so that they could have a better shelter. One of his older Uncles, Byrinz, seemed to be stronger than any of the others. He was a weird looking person, which later Lura was told by his Pops that Byrinz was what was called a ‘hybrid’. They were people of mixed tribe lines that showed in some pretty cool ways. Byrinz was a part of a warrior tribe line and a merchant tribe. He had the strength to back up the warrior, while his mind was as sharp as any merchant. Lura thought that he was a pretty cool adult. He grunted when he walked into Odreen’s back as the older child stopped on the trail.

Odreen looked over his shoulder to his cousin. “No.”

With that simple response he continued to walk. Lura blinked in shock as he tilted his head to follow after his cousin. Was stopping necessary to answer him?!? He didn’t think so, but that was his thought. He rubbed his nose as they walked past a large dark tree. Its winding roots made him feel like it was going to get up and walk at any point. He looked at the large old tree wondering just how tall it really was. He looked forward again to his cousin. Waving to the Radaku, Lun, who trotted up to walk with them. Lun was Odreen’s Radaku, trained by someone else for his parents. As they got closer to where the two families were building up one of the training pens for the pups, Lura smiled softly seeing his parents interacting with one another. His Pops might have been older than his Dad, but when the two were together it was like he got some youth back to him. It was…endearing.

Part of the pen was going to be a large arch so they could set up cover for harsher weather. Lura nodded as he was instructed to help put the arch together on the ground. So the adults could pull it standing. Once it was standing tall. The child quickly moved with his cousin to make sure everything was going to stand without issue. The stronger adults took over when things were stable. It was fun to put pens together, Lura liked making things. As he looked at the arch he knew that the tent they used wrapped around the front of the arch to anchor into the ground. He looked to his cousin, watching as Odreen took a deep draught of water. Once he was finished the older child went to his Father, Byrinz. Who muttered a few things to him.

Odreen nodded as he started to walk away without a word to Lura. The younger boy huffed as he made to follow after him. He blinked hearing Odreen’s Mother, Auntie Ottlua, call out. “Dren, where are you going?”

Odreen stopped to look back at the stubborn child. Then to the elder who had spoken. “I was going to check the fishing net on the ridge, Mother.” He turned to face his elder. Showing respect. “Did you want me to teach Lura how to pull the nets in?”

Ottlua nodded. “That’s a smart idea, Dren. I don’t see Lura doing a lot of fishing. He should learn a few new skills here.”

Lura looked between them. “Hey! Don’t I get a say in this?” He blinked as he watched his Dad in the distance cross his arms. “I was gonna ask…” he muttered as he kicked at the ground. Hearing a few Elders chuckle he looked up with a soft smile. “Can I?”

When his parents nodded, Lura took off to bounce next to Odreen. “Let's go!!”

Odreen chuckled softly as he led his cousin to the ridge. It was this wide cut through the land, a small drop of like two walls awaited anyone reckless enough to try it. At the bottom was a small shoreline before a river flowed. Lura knew there was a path to climb down to the river, but sometimes he would see Odreen and one of his Father’s fishing from the top of the ridge. “So…the nets are?”

Odreen nodded to the pathway down. “Further down, we have the fishing nets downstream to where you would cast a line.” he explained as he started picking his way down. There was a rope that was set up on the open side of the path. Giving you two ways to keep your grip. “The nets are on a pulley system that will let us hoist them to the edge of the ridge. We just have to hook them up from down by the river.”

Odreen had better footing than Lura as the child slipped a few times on the way down. Thankful for the rope to his right he huffed. “I got this.”

His cousin didn’t turn to help, though he did stop when he heard Lura give a soft cry whenever he slipped. “I know you do.”

Lura smiled, Odreen was an interesting cousin that was for sure. As they finally reached the small shoreline. Which really was only big enough for one person to walk along. Lura could hear how quickly that river was actually moving. “That’s…fast..isn’t it dangerous for us to be near that?”

Odreen looked to the river. “It is. Father is planning on setting up a higher net, but that would take away the fishing point up top.”

Lura blinked. “Not if you make the fishing point the start of the path. Set that up as the fishing point, you can set up a safety net the rest of the way. Especially since your Mom is expecting again. We should make sure the little ones don’t get hurt.”

He was speaking more for the Radaku pups he knew would be silly enough to not pay attention to what was around them. He paled thinking about that. Yeah, they would need safety nets. He didn’t know how they raised younglings back then, but this place was outdated in a lot of ways. Odreen paused as he looked back at Lura. “That’s a good idea. I’ll let my Father know about it.”

Lura blushed as he smiled. “I mean, we’ll have pups who are going to be silly. Thinking about their safety. You would naturally think about other younglings.” he shrugged. “Simple logic.”

Odreen nodded. “As simple as the pulley system.” he chuckled softly. It was rare, but Lura felt a small victory when he heard it. “Here we are.”

Lura looked at the massive nets that stretched across the river. There was a walking ledge they were anchored to that Odreen started across. Another rope strung up to help with keeping your footing. His Uncles were really good about safety. Odreen pointed to the hooks above Lura. “Grab those! When you do, hook them to the metal rings you find on the nets. Once we get one side up, we hook the other side with the smaller hooks.”

Lura followed his words. Blinking as the nets lifted up a small bounty. “Whoa…” it wasn’t a lot of fish, nor was it set along the river bed to avoid overfishing. He smiled as he was able to hook the net on his first try. Odreen was quicker about it, though that was because he was used to this. He looked over. “Now what?!?”

Odreen chuckled. “Start pulling the rope!!” He showed him where it was. Lura turned to start pulling. Odreen timing his pulls with him. Lura grunted with effort. Squeaking when a shadow fell over him as his other cousin Omaru appeared to start helping him. He glanced over to see Uncle Byrinz had crossed the walkway to help Odreen.

“You're doing good Lura.” his cousin muttered to him as the pair got the nets hoisted. Once he was shown how to anchor the rope so the net wouldn’t fall back down.

The child was lifted up by his Uncle as the elder walked back up to the ridge. “I got you, kid. Your parents have food set up for us. They're going into town for a few supplies.”

Lura laughed as he was hugged tight. He gasped when he was set down at the table where a bowl of sweet bread was waiting. “YES!!! SWEET BREAD!!!’

Ottlua laughed as she watched her nephew dig in. Shaking her head while she got a wet rag. The elder walked back over. “Hands.”

Lura stopped eating to show his hands, groaning when the wet rag was used to wipe them off. He huffed as the cleaning bar was used next. “Auntie.”

“Don’t complain. You have to make sure you're not ingesting anything that could make you sick. Doing this every so often doesn’t make you less of a boy.” His Auntie scolded him with a pointed look.

Lura nodded. “Yes ma’am.” he hummed. “Being up high was interesting. We’ve never had to use a path like that before.”

His Uncle slowed to listen. “Did you want to walk along the river more often?”

“Yeah! I think it's great training for balance!! Since there's a safety rope that would make it okay for me to use alone.” he reasoned. Seeing the look he got the child quickly thought of a different wording. “Ah, I mean…you could always be right behind me when I do use the path. That way…I don’t slip all the way down like that one mudslide.”

Byrinz hummed in thought. “We’ll discuss it with your parents when they get back. Till then, I’d like to hear more of your ideas for safety.”

Lura beamed as he nodded. “Okay!!!” He spent the rest of the day talking with his elder Uncle about how to make the encampment safer for all who lived there.

Lost

This was the worst. Lura sniffled as he held his knees close to his chest. He looked around the small cavern one more time. He had gone out to forage like usual, he told his parents he would stay close to the new home. It was still a new area. An area that the Radaku pack hadn’t fully checked the parameter of. It was still an area his parents hadn’t fully mapped out either. That was the big issue, it wasn’t fully explored by the elders of their family. Why he thought he could be out by himself was a idiotic idea.

He had gone out to find some plants for the kitchen. He went down towards the river when he saw that there was a different path just a little outside of the camp proper. That was a stupid move, he slipped into the river. Unable to scream as he was trying to stay above water. As he was swept away and down stream the child missed the net as they had just hoisted it not too long before. The adults were still harvesting the fish that were caught before. He sniffled again as he wiped at his eyes. This was no time to sit here crying. He stood up, limping to the entrance. At some point during the little trip, he had bashed his ankle on a rock along the riverbed.

He huffed. He got this, the child started to limp out. Wincing as he did so. He had to get up to the ridge. Stopping in the cavern allowed him to catch his breath. Now he just had to get his bearings and get back home. As the child made his way up, slowly. He picked his footing carefully. Thoughts of his family clung to his mind. His brother would be alone, his parents devastated. He had to get back to them. At night, big beasts came out of nowhere to prey on vulnerable earthlings like himself right now. He sniffled again, this sucked.

He just had to be that curious about something. He just had to wander where he knew it was unknown. This just proved that he was still a brat, he didn’t know what to do. How to tend to his ankle or how to make a shelter that would scare off the beasts. He knew how to start a campfire, but everything else…he didn’t pay attention to. His parents were always there to help him. He relied on his family daily to help him with things. Right now. He didn’t have that. Right now. He was alone. Right now. He was lost.

The child blinked as he looked around the clearing that he stepped up into. Oh no, he didn’t know this area. This clearing was weird. He looked around with a whimper. As he limped into the clearing, he could barely make out different shapes on the edge of the clearing.

“Over here. There’s a shelter you can hide in.” He jumped at the male’s voice that cut through the darkness next to him. “I’m not helping you walk. You got here on your own, just hide.”

Lura blinked as he could see a shadow figure on the edge of the clearing. He limped over to them, more like the lost child he was than the cautious one. The voice sounded similar to his Pops. He reached the edge. Seeing what looked like a fallen tree, the branches were curved in such a way it was like a natural shelter. He moved to curl underneath them. Squeaking when a curtain of moss dropped as the branches were disturbed. “Stay here till you hear someone familiar. Don’t fall asleep, you’ll die.”

Lura snorted. “I’m not tired.” he was more scared than tired. He was also cold. The child shivered then shifted further into the shelter. Blinking when he felt something matted. He moved to pat the fur edged cloak that was tucked away into the back of the shelter. He pulled on it, blinking as a piece big enough for him to tuck underneath broke free. He pulled it around himself. Sighing as the warmth started to build. He saw something else under the cloak…he couldn’t make out the object exactly. Though he got the feeling that he shouldn’t really know what it was.

He just sat there to listen to the woods around him. Eventually, he didn’t know how much longer, he heard a familiar bark. Dep! He looked at the moss curtain. “DEP!!!”

He moved to the curtain just as he felt the tree shudder when the Janarim leaped on top of it and landed in front of the curtain. Lura opened it in time with Dep sticking his nose right in his face. Lura squealed as he threw his arms around the beast. “You found me!!!”

Lura gasped when he heard his parents also calling off to the side. “I’M HERE!!!” he pulled himself out of the shelter, the tattered cloak around his shoulders. Dep instantly sniffed his blood on ankle. Shifting so that the child was on his back before the beast moved away. There was the smell of death behind him. “Dep found me!!!”

The child never saw the bones of the fallen warrior he had taken shelter with behind him. He looked towards the light of his parents with their torches. Lura couldn’t read his parent’s expression before he was swept up by his Dad. He clung to his parents. Finally seeing their smiles as he was swept by a different river, back to the safety of his family.

No longer Lost.
