Should he tell her he'd bought the exact same book as her, to learn side by side with her? The thought was very tempting. Maybe she'd think it sweet, that he cared so much to match her skill level. Or maybe she'd think he was trying to steal her thunder at learning something new all on her own. He already had a head start on her as an acrobat. It wasn't like he needed to learn balance when he already knew it enough to walk on a tightrope. No. Best to keep that information to himself for now. Pretend like he had been inspired by seeing this book right here, right now. You never could know how Elka would react sometimes. He didn't want anything to mess up his chances with their reconciliation.
Kayde put the book down carefully, making sure it was still on the exact page it was when he'd picked it up. "Thinking competitive dancing is the key?"

Kayde was correct in Elka's occasional un-predictableness. That question didn't sit very well with her. Straightening up her back, the Ice woman planted fists on her hips and stuck her nose higher in the air. Which did little to the effect she wanted when the man was much taller than she was.
"As a matter of fact, yes. I was. Why? You don't think that a good career path?" She thought it was. She enjoyed dancing, so why not use it to further herself in life? She honestly had no idea what else she could do. It wasn't like she had any other skills that would be helpful for the real world. She always thought she'd marry into a rich noble's family and live the rest of her life in luxury, spending most of her time shopping or relaxing at home in complete comfort. Sure, she'd have to pop out a few kids for the sake of continuing her husband's family line. But there were nanny's to take care of the kids for her after that. But now. Now she had to start thinking of the future more actively and differently. Though she still hoped she could make the dream of a life of mostly leisure a reality. Doing work just wasn't her thing.

The sight of Elka mad, or at least irritated, at him made little difference to Kayde. He'd seen all her moods by now and was particularly familiar with this one. So long as she didn't decide to start punching him in the stomach again, like she'd done the first time they'd met after so many years apart.
Kayde just smiled at her, which only seemed to annoy her further. He could see her eyes widen dangerously. Such a prideful woman.
"It is. I'm just surprised you want to do it." He came closer to her, but not close enough to touch. The same thoughts were going through his head, remembering her time with the caravan. Even the smallest amount of work or labor was distasteful to her. She was too used to higher class living. Did she think being a dancer would be glamourous and that she would be so famous, she could have the easy life he knew she wanted? Even dancing was hard work.
"I might not be a dancer myself, but I can teach you balance techniques that might help you."

Of course Kayde hadn't meant any harm with his question. Elka knew that. But sometimes her pride really got the better of her. She didn't like anyone to look down on her. Pity her. She didn't even like sympathy sometimes, as it also made her feel inferior to the one giving it. And, while someone might have meant something along those lines with that kind of question, Kayde did not. He never did. And he demonstrated that by offering to help her, instead. Elka could feel her tough exterior melting away and she let her hands drop, gently resting against her thighs.
"I would appreciate any help you can give me, Kayde." She'd seen what he could do. Truly amazing feats of balance, the way he could stick a landing from a high place with a dazzling twirl in the air. She'd always loved to watch him practice his acrobatics. Would he keep doing it, now that he was free from Murie? She hoped he did. He was so good at it.

Kayde's smile almost widened, seeing the tension evaporate off her like water against the sides of a hot kettle. So quickly her moods could change. But he liked that. It meant she hid nothing, that she was always honest about everything she felt. He'd never have to wonder where he stood with her.
"Good. Than come here. I can show you a good leg stretch."
