Michael made a small humming noise in response to Devyn’s counter, like he wasn’t too sure Devyn was right, but was also accepting that he could be.
With Devyn’s back to him, Michael shifted onto his side as well. One arm on the pillows made it easy for him to run his fingers through Devyn’s hair, lightly scratching at his scalp. His other arm, hesitant at first, reached out to place over Devyn’s waist.
He knew he was pushing his luck, and he knew Devyn was used to being alone, but maybe he didn’t want to. Not just to be in the same room as someone else, but close.
Michael was sure it was obvious that his heart was racing, but he pulled Devyn closer to him anyway, so that Devyn’s back was to his chest. And Michael could press his face into Devyn’s hair.
He held himself back from asking Devyn to let him know if it was too much. Devyn would tell him if it was. Michael trusted him to let him know if he was doing something he didn’t like.
But Devyn had also never commented on waking up with Michael’s arm over his waist.

The fingers in his hair were distracting enough that Devyn almost didn’t even notice what Michael was doing otherwise. He was halfway through a purr when he was pulled closer to Michael. There was a brief surprise, although none of it was unpleasant. He hadn’t expected it, but it didn’t mean he didn’t like it.
He’d tensed for a split second but relaxed just as quickly, and adjusted himself only slightly so the pillow was a bit more comfortable. He got settled, and breathed a contented sigh.
He didn’t think he needed to say that it felt nice, but Michael had seemed a little on edge all night–understandably, given what had happened to the Reids–so even after he’d relaxed against him, he said, “I didn’t think your bed could get more comfortable.”

The reassurance was welcome, and Michael settled into the bed a little more. A nagging voice in the back of his head warned him that he was being possessive, wanting to be this close to Devyn. He tried ignoring it for now. He was too content, despite how horrible of a night it had been.
Instead, he smiled and let out a soft sigh against Devyn’s hair. He had his arm over him, hand settled against Devyn’s chest. “Me either,” he admitted.
Even if it was only for a little while before Devyn decided this was too much for their friendship, Michael wanted to enjoy every moment of this closeness as he could.
“Sleep well, Dev.”
