“Ah Etana,” Kai said a little sourly. Of course, he was going with Etana, they did everything together lately. “Have fun with Etana then.” She really tried to mean it, really but she was self-centered and stubborn. It would take her a while to see that it was not an affront to her that Pello was leaving and that he was not leaving her behind.
She didn’t want to fight with him, so she got back to work tending to the corals. “I’m not mad, I’ll see you whenever you get back.” Though probably not, she was going to leave too and they probably wouldn’t see each other for many years to come.

He grew up with a sister, so he knew when someone was being dismissive because they were hiding something, or being indirect. He knew his friend was frustrated with him, both in her tone when she spoke of Etana, how she snapped at him, and how she dismissed him by turning away and giving him the cold shoulder.
He was quiet for a long moment, watching her and debating how to deal with this. He didn't want to push her if she was mad, but he also didn't want to leave it like this.
"Look...I still have a few days...I think the boat leaves in about three so we'll be heading out the day after tomorrow. I'd like...to spend time with you before I leave...plan on how to keep in touch. So...if you're up for it, maybe we can spend some time this evening?"

Kai was quiet too for a while as she tried to reconcile everything going on. Maybe tonight would be better, she could digest the information on her own and probably get her anger in check before he did leave. She didn’t know how they would keep in touch, couldn’t comprehend how that would happen and it frustrated her even more.
“Tonight, would be better yeah. I have to finish this.” Maybe he’d understand she needed a bit more time to take it in. For once she was glad to be tending the corals.

Nodding, he waited another breath of a second before moving with the tide to give her space. He would need a little time to figure out her reaction, maybe get some feedback from his sister on what he might have done wrong. Hopefully she would come tonight, he really did value their friendship and didn't want to leave without a friendly farewell.

She watched him go and then got back to the coral. She was going to finish this quick and then go back inside and hide in her room for the rest of the day. Kai would speak to Pello of course, because she could be as angry as could be with him, she still did want to keep in touch. Though him leaving made her want to leave even sooner now. Probably on her birthday if she could afford it and then she was headed to Tendaji to find a circus of some kind and make a name for herself.
