"Thanks." Laike smiled, and his ears reddened. "The roses, um — that's something I do in real life. Not roses specifically, they're kinda big, but I keep a lot of potted plants?" Was that a weird thing to admit?
"But yeah, most of the villagers will give you gifts if you're on good terms with them. It's like making friends normally, like you have to," he took a breath, "talk to people, and then they warm up to you."
Which sounded like a nightmare, because it was. In games like this, it was easier, because he could turn his Switch off for a month and avoid all conversation thereafter.
"Oh," he remarked as his phone buzzed him. "My stop's coming up."

"Ooh, I love making friends. That sounds wonderful. I'll have to see if I can get something like this!" Peregrine said brightly, beaming. "Thank you for showing me." He felt a bit sad as the guy mentioned needing to get off the bus, but he nodded, preparing to move out of the way as the bus began to slow. "Thank you," he repeated.

Laike chuckled and felt self-conscious for it. He guarded his smile, wary of his teeth, and nodded enthusiastically to the stranger. He felt awkward doing it, but didn't want inadvertently discourage the kid's new exposure to video games by giving him a poor experience with a gamer.
But he was also nervous, because the stranger was alive, and had a pulse, and thought things, and —
Laike gathered his stuff, shoved the Switch into his backpack, and stood on stiff, shaky legs. He clutched the seat before him as he sidled out, willing with the power of panic for his legs to work as normal so they didn't lock up and send him face-first into the floor next to the driver a he stepped off the bus.
He paused again at the exit, second guessing himself, and offered an awkward, jerky wave before he fled out into the open-aired solitude. Then breathed a sigh of relief.
