"You know how I can get at galleries," Mathias sighed. "But, not going to lie, I've been considering it - at least to get my work out there if nothing else."

At the mention of goat yoga he snorted and shook his head.

"I ran into an interesting man the other day, he and his puppy had wandered into my gym," He didn't actually own the place - but as far as the staff were concerned he practically lived there. Was there before dawn, left and then was back in the evening.

"So I guess something like some of the health clubs have - only instead of childcare, you know - pet care, bring your dog to be dog-sat, maybe offer some training services, or grooming... I don't know, but like, give pet owners a place to work out and not worry about Fido casing off down the street or tearing up their apartment?"

"Since when do you decide you wanted to make a gym for 'Karens' and their spoiled little pompoms?" Delilah countered, immediately seeing where this would lead. Sure everyone had a pet they loved but those with larger dogs, well, to load them up to go to the gym seemed like as much a headache as just leaving them at home for an hour or two.

Truth was that Delilah knew what Mathias really wanted to do. People loved their pets and spoiling them was always a good business model. The prime example was outside were three dogs sat with their owners as they ate lunch.

"I don't mean to be the bucket of cold water but I do just want you to think about all sides of it. It had merit, everything does, but you need to really think of who you are targeting and are you willing to put up with those headaches."

But he was thinking at least. That she was grateful for.

"What did the man do with the dog then while he worked out?"

"Given that he looked like he hadn't even looked at weights or a treadmill since high school at least, and the fact that he was fully dressed in tweed - he held the dog while I gave him an impromptu tour," Mathias offered with a wave of his hand. "Man could not have looked more lost if he tried, so I decided I'd save him the trouble of one of the more aggressive ketamine junkies getting on his case."

Mathias was no slouch - and most of the dudes at his gym knew he also duked it out in the octagon, so even the more steroid riddled muscle heads didn't give him too much issue.

"Was a corgi puppy, tiny little thing - cute as heck," Mathias offered. "And by all means, lord knows a little bit of cold water never killed anyone. But yeah, no, I don't think I want to cater to the Karen market - you know that's why I do my cardio before dawn."

A wide range of expressions passed over Delilah's face as she listened. First indifference, then confusion at the mention of tweed in a gym. Finally, it was a smile at the idea of a corgi puppy.

Who couldn't smile at something so cute?

"I thought you did your cardio before dawn because you couldn't sleep." Delilah mused, cocking a brow at him in her own way before taking a sip of her iced tea once more. "But neither here nor there."

"But you asked my thoughts on the matter and I think, while adorable in ways, it has problems too. Problems I'm not sure you are ready to address considering one very large thing."

Both eyes locked onto her face. "When is the last time you held a real job?"

"I will have you know that starving artist has been a real job since the middle ages," Mathias said, feigning offense. "It's not my fault that the era of patronage died long before my talents could be noticed by some Italian noble with more money than sense."

He smirked all the same and shook his head.

"But no, you got me there, I don't think I've done anything "real job" worthy since..." He sat there for a moment, tapping his fingers against the table as he had to think about it. "Senior Year of College? Gallery Attendant - the pay was okay but I took it to get my foot in the door."

"Italian, French, bored old man or woman with a lot of money looking to keep young men around." She waved a hand, completely ignoring what she was inferring as she lazily offered a shrug.

But when he brought up his last job, well, that drew her attention back to her. "So whatever happened to it. I mean you are right, it was a foot in the door and now, here you are back to spray painting Uncle Ned's walls at odd hours of the night and pissing off his employees too. I hear he had to add extra lighting and cameras to make the staff feel safe again."

At least that was his claim. They all knew he just wanted to blame Mathias for spending more money.

"Oh is that what's he's saying now?" Mathias snorted. "The lighting and camera were already installed before I got there the first time - it was a honey trap and I should have known, but that's besides the point."

He waved it off. It had resulted in a very... interesting meeting and he hoped that she had appreciated his art of her none the less - though the lack of a phone call or even text at this point pointed at her probably having round filed it. Oh well. More the pity that.

"Besides me cashing in a few favors every now and then to have some of my art added to the rotation?" He asked. "Nothing - I'm sure I could reapply and they'd take me back on... It would just mean giving up project time... But I'm in between projects so that might not be a bad idea, come to think of it."

"You mean in between walls." Delilah mused, chuckling as she poked fun. Mathias was a skilled artist, she never doubted that. The man could sketch a likeness of anyone he had met on the napkin in front of them and have it look like he spent hours on it.

No, she wasn't jealous. Why would she be?

"But in all seriousness, why don't you?" The question was less from a family suggestion and more sisterly as she half shrugged. "I mean if you hate it, you walk. You and I both know you could get back into the gallery with a well-placed phone call. What you do after that is up to you. Either way, I think you would enjoy it more than helping Karen do a pull-up." She smirked.

He pulled a face at the mention of helping a Karen do pull ups. "Ugh," He snorted. "Please, do not remind me - the gym keeps trying to corner me to see if I want to take a personal trainer gig because soccer moms keep asking... I'm debating changing gyms at this point."

He was only half joking. The man had standards - even if he sometimes put them aside to help out his cousin when it came to attending certain frat and sorority house parties as a guard dog.

He was pretty sure her sorority sisters compared notes.

"I honestly don't know," Mathias admitted. "And the more and more we talk about it - the more and more it's sounding like a good idea, which I think is your super power." He teased her gently.

"I'll dust off my resume and reapply - if you want to apply some gentle leverage."

Oh, they compared notes. All the notes.

Delilah made a point to not be within a ten-block radius of the house when they did.

"One of many." She threw back, picking up her tea. "Can't think of the others right now but getting you to think something is a good idea is a very handy one. It saves me quite a few headaches in the long run." After all, what was family for?

"I'll see if I can pull a string or two. Name the gallery you have in mind and I'll have an answer for you by Uncle Ned's show-off party on Friday." The words were out of her mouth before it dawned on her that he might not have heard about it yet. Or at all.

Her tongue clicked once. "No one told you, did they?"

"Forte Art," Mathias offered. "They cater more toward my style and it's easier for me to network with the artists there, usually..."

Artists were a strange bunch - and not all of them were as gregarious and outgoing as him. It added to their... mystique.

"You already know the answer to that question," Mathias said coolly. "If you hadn't told me, Uncle Ned would have just said my invite got lost in the mail - probably still will if I crash it."

He leaned back in his chair a bit. "Which I am not obligated to do - if only on principle."

Taking a deep breath, Delilah reached back into the same bag she'd pulled the paper out before, only this time she withdrew a rather simple-looking cream-colored envelope. Holding it between her index and middle fingers perfectly upright, she let him see it before twisting her wrist to flash that it was addressed to him.

"He would have claimed it, had I not made a point to grab it and your parents two weeks ago when he made a show of giving Dad his. I dropped off the other one to your mother the other day and figured she'd say something to you. Uncle Ned is once again doing his 'look at me, aren't I wonderful' parties for his new pride and joy development opening. Every family member in town is invited as well as other people he wants to show off to."

Leaning her wrist over, she offered the envelope to him. "It's at that new steakhouse he built. Claims best in town."

"Well if it is it's not because of Uncle Ned," Mathias said, snagging the envelope with a grin. "His Night Manager is..." He caught himself, realizing that he was about to tell Delilah about how someone threw a quarter at his head and nearly put a dent in his rattle cans with another... Probably not a great first impression.

"Probably the only reason they turn a profit - she's the one that busted me and warned me about he camera," He said with a nod. "So he finally got around to hiring a proper hiring manager if nothing else."

"And I haven't talked to Mom yet this week - so that's probably why," He added with a sigh. "I'm sure she sat on it because she knew I'd go just out of spite."

"But, I'll be sure to be there with bells on, if only to see his smile go south."

And depending on how things went, maybe he wouldn't make a complete a** of himself in front of said night manager - it'd be nice to see her again.

There wasn't a reason to head the skeptical look that crossed her face as he quickly changed his tone and his story as he took the invitation with a smile that said something had just gotten to him.

"I see." With a musing nod, she decided if he didn't want to tell her right then, well, she'd be keeping an eye out. But to let it slide a bit, she added, "Spite or free food. Starving artist doesn't pay well after all."

"But you know the drill. We go, we smile, Uncle Ned gloats about how amazing he is. Half the family rolls there eyes and uses it to network with everyone else. The rest of the family counts down until we can leave..."

"Got me out of another frat party at least. Getting tired of having to babysit."

"Ah, that explains why I haven't had a sudden invite to any house parties this week," He gave her a sly grin and shook his head. He didn't mind playing guard dog - but he knew that she wasn't a fan of the lifestyle a lot of her sorority sisters tended to pursue - not that he could blame her at all. He'd remembered college parties - And with any luck, she would be able to move on from these to more formal dinners and galas.

Granted she probably hated those too. Being a socialite sucked.

It's why he lived on the fringe of the family - he'd been to enough military balls to know he wasn't the stuffy party type either. Though he could fake it for a few hours.

"Uncle Ned pretends that I don't exist and we all get free food and drinks while his staff run around like crazy and hope none of us notice them." He said with a nod. "Yep, I know the game all too well."
