It was hard to focus on anything besides the voices, especially when the only other sound in the kitchen was the occasional whisking of eggs. Kuno's family had undoubtedly been woken up thanks to Teagan's oh-so-eager declaration and surprise, they had an unplanned for house guest. So much for properly introducing myself. "I came from a small village in Sauti, I'll be staying as long as your family will allow me to, we are not dating, and it's just me." Lifting a skillet, Mero took her ingreidients over to the fire and started work on the first omelette. "I'm training to be a midwife and there weren't any magic users in my village so Kuno offered to let me come here to learn from your father. If he can show me of the basics, or at least let me have access to his books, then I can study under an actual midwife and get a good start."

Teagan cocked her head as the answers came, ending with a small nod. "They'll be fine with you here; especially if you can make breakfast. I guess lots of people stay here sometimes, but I don't see them much. We're usually not here lately anyway." One wipe would normally would have done it for her, but this Mero was different. Reluctantly, though without complaint, Teagan rinsed out the cloth and wiped the counter again to be sure all of the powder and crumbs and egg goo was rinsed off.
"Azreal uses magic, too. You could ask him. Actually.. we have lots of magic people." Teagan raised her hand and snapped her fingers a couple times, watching the contact point closely. She shook her head after a moment. "Not me yet. Kuno doesn't either. Or mama."
Midwife?? Teagan set the cloth aside and peer intently at Mero. "What's a midwife? ...Are you trying to be a wife between Azreal and Kuno? Or is papa teaching you to be a wife, like, you're almost a wife but not there yet? ...Does mama know about you?"

It was nice to see that she didn’t have to stay on top of Teagan to make sure she was doing the work properly. She resisted at first, as naturally as any child would, but it seemed that underneath all that bluster she really was a helpful girl.
Mero tossed in a few bits of spice, sausage and pepper into the middle of the egg before folding it. After she’d pressed it the older hybrid flipped the omelette with practiced ease. “What? No, that isn’t what a midwife is at all!” A wife between her brothers? The scandal! “A midwife is someone who helps mothers have babies. I’m training to take care of women while they’re pregnant, when they’re having the baby and to be a baby’s healer for a while after they’re born. That’s all.” Honestly, she’d never expected that sort of answer and Kuno would definitely be hearing about that one later.
“Ah and...if your mother heard you earlier then she knows about me now.” When the first omelette was ready Mero reached her hand out towards Teagan. “Reach me a plate, please.”

Her posture perked up with interest at Mero's reaction to her guess. Oh, they took care of babies and pregnant ladies? Not exactly thrilling to hear, but it was certainly more palatable than what she had initially suspected. "People do like having babies. Mama went to someone in town for us, but I don't think they were called a midwife. Just a regular doctor."
Mero's meal already smelled so much better than her own earlier attempt... She scurried to grab a plate and held it out, a mischievous grin rising. "Yeah... she heard me," she said with a giggle, still able to hear the voices from the hall. Things seemed to have calmed down, but it had been fun while it had lasted. "I bet she'll like you once she finds out what a midwife really is." Of course her mother would know what a midwife was, but she didn't know that.

Mero slipped the omelette onto the offered plate and started work on the next. “Most healers can deliver babies just fine on their own, but midwives are much more knowledgeable on special cases. Like twins or little babies.” She could have gone into more detail, but honestly, how much would the girl retain?
“I hope so.” In all honesty so long as all that noise didn’t come her way she would be okay with it. Kuno was on his own for the most part. He had insisted she would be fine staying here so it wasn’t really her fault that he hadn’t exactly told his parents, right? So long as she played the part of a kind, courteous house guest she should be just fine. “Hopefully once she tries my cooking she’ll be in a better mood.” Surely with all that out of her system and some food in her belly their mother would be more receptive to a girl in the house, right? Mero could only hope.
