Summary
Ahio and an old neighbor discuss his plans for the future.
-
"Ahio, my boy!" A gentle voice spoke up, and Ahio, who had been resting with his back against the wall at the market. It was early, and he was waiting for his father to arrive with the latest wares for bartering. Ahio hated being late. Or perhaps he just hated waiting. But he was starting to get fidgety from doing nothing. That familiar voice was a welcome distraction, and the prentice leaped to his feet the moment he heard his name.
"Eleiu!" he said, wide pink eyes brightening. The old man had once been their neighbor in Hota, but had moved farther into the caves once the world had started opening up. Not worth the trouble, he'd said. Ahio had fond memories of spending his younger days helping Eleiu tend his seaweed crops and hunt for Stari.
"It's been some days, Ahio. You've grown. Soon you'll be following your father's footsteps up to the surface, won't you?" The old man said, coming to a rest beside Ahio and leaning against the wall. Despite a natural inclination toward isolationism, Eleiu was shockingly well-informed about the goings-on outside of Po'lua. Sometimes it seemed he might know more than anyone else down here, though he'd never cited his sources and nobody knew where he heard all these tidbits of information.
Ahio nodded eagerly, shifting his weight from foot to foot as he thought about making his way to the surface. "There's a lot to learn out there, it seems," he said. "Beyond just trading. I mean, that's all well and good, but I want to see what else the land-walkers can teach me. Skills! Things that might help the Kawena too. I mean... it can't all be bad." The words tumbled out of his mouth in their rush to get out.
Eleiu let out a wheezy laugh and clapped him lightly on the shoulder. The old man sounded frail, but there was an unseen strength behind that clap that was enough to remind Ahio that his friend was still strong. "Ahio, you're right. And a young man as eager as you... I don't see why you shouldn't learn some skills. Maybe spend some time up on the surface, whenever you get a chance to go up there. It'll be good for you. There's more world out there than Po'lua, and being down here won't be enough for you soon enough," Eleiu mused.
"I want to learn magic!" Ahio blurted out before he'd even noticed what he was saying. "... I mean. I just, I've heard that the Land Walkers can do it."
Eleiu, blessedly, did not seem perturbed. He nodded thoughtfully, quietly, and then finally said, "What kind of magic?"
Ahio tilted his head. "There are kinds?" It hadn't crossed his mind.
"There are many kinds," Eleiu said. "But they can be different. Think about where you draw your strength and perhaps your faith. Whatever you use now to keep you strong in times of hardship, you can try to use as the basis of the magic you want to learn."
Ahio fell silent, only for a moment, as he considered these questions. "Well... the sea," he said finally, hesitant. "Iokaila, the Mother Ocean." As most down here might answer in his place.
Eleiu smiled. "I thought you might say that. In that case, you might want to think about something that uses the power of nature as a source of strength. Becoming a summoner, perhaps. First you'll want to become an Elementalist, and that will set you on the right path."
"Elementalist," Ahio said, rolling the word on his tongue, feeling the weight of it as he said it. The beginnings of a plan were formulating in his mind, visions of the future and all the things he might learn. He looked back at Eleiu with a bright, excited grin. "Thanks, Eleiu. I think you've given me a lot to think about."

Summary
Following his kidnapping, Ahio finds himself on a boat, heading toward untold challenges in an unknown land. He comes to the bitter conclusion that back home in Po'lua, his beloved will most likely interpret his unexplained disappearance the result of a hardly unexpected distraction during his trip up to the surface. Ahio ends up vowing to return to Pekelo, no matter what it takes.
---
Ahio huddled in a dark, dank little corner below decks of the ship he found himself aboard. There wasn't really water. Their captors had provided a small shallow basin of seawater for when their air sacs had been depleted and they needed a dip, he had lain in it for a while, feeling like every breath was barely grabbing any oxygen. He didn't know if it was because the water was still, or because he had existed in a state of unyielding panic since they had been nabbed on the river banks.
"They" were Ahio, Lapela and Ruehi. They had had a chance to exchange names by now, though he didn't know much about them other than that they, too, had been unfortunate enough to have been on that river at the same time as he. They had been ambushed by landwalkers, wrestled into submission and tossed on board this ship heading away from their homeland. Words like "money" and "rich" had been bandied about with cavalier ease, and as far as Ahio could understand, they were headed to the land of Tendaji, where they would be sold to some rich collector.
A collector of... what, exactly? Ahio didn't understand how he and his compatriots could be sold, how they could possibly be collected like items. His constant panic alternately told him they'd be killed upon arrival and stuffed as trophies, or that they'd be used for some sinister entertainment by these callous landwalkers. Either way, he would have to prepare for a level of suffering he'd never had to endure before in his young life. He'd see things he'd never seen before, and he might very well die before he ever made it back home to Po'lua again.
That thought wounded him more than the bruises and rope burns on his wrists and ankles. He had left home with such ease, with hardly a look back, taking for granted the notion that he would return in a matter of weeks and sweep Pekelo off his feet. It had never occurred to him that he might not be able to go back.
And Pekelo... Ahio felt an almost painful constriction around his heart as he thought of Pekelo waiting for him, the weeks turning into months, turning into years. How long would Pekelo wait? Would he know that some ill fortune had befallen Ahio? Would he know that this extended departure was anything but intentional?
Ahio wished that the answers to those questions were the ones he desperately wanted to hear: that Pekelo would wait for him his whole life, that he would know beyond without a doubt that Ahio would never choose to leave him down in the caves all by himself. But if he was being honest with himself, he had to admit that those were unlikely to be the truth. Pekelo would think that Ahio had simply gotten distracted - as he was so often inclined - and had found some shiny thing to chase up on the surface. Pekelo would think that he had simply forgotten about their pact. And Pekelo would not let himself wallow in his disappointment. Pekelo would move on, would choose to live in the present with Vaiarii...
Every one of these thoughts hurt. Ahio could hardly breathe once he was done, but his greatest disappointment was not knowing that Pekelo would live a life without him, it was knowing that he had done it to himself. If Ahio hadn't had a lifetime track record of showing up late, of forgetting important appointments, of not caring about consequences, perhaps he wouldn't have had to think that his lover would grow disenchanted and possibly even bitter toward him in his absence.
And if...
No more ifs. In that moment, Ahio made a decision. It didn't matter what Pekelo did or did not do. The only thing that mattered was what he, Ahio, did. And he would not give up. He would not let this inglorious capture break him. He would grow strong, he would bide his time, he would escape. He would survive, and he would return to Po'lua, and he would fulfill the promises he had made to Pekelo.
