THE WORST PART OF BEING AN ADULT
_________________________________________________________________________

"Uuuugh," Rewi groaned piteously as he lay in the shallow waters of a Matori beach, folding his arms behind his head and peering up through sparkling waves at the sky above. Every day spent on Tendaji soil felt taxing. He was hot and tired of walking. Everyone looked at him as if he was something strange and they didn't know what to do with him. And why was everything so heavy?

It was nothing like anything Rewi had experienced in Kahikina. No hardship had prepared him for this. No journey to Noelani could even come close to being comparable... Everything was so difficult and different, he wanted to cry. He wasn't used to wanting to this kind of persistent struggle.

Matori may be on the water, but it wasn't like home, that was for sure. They didn't have accommodations built for someone who lived in the water, no matter how comfortable around it Matorians tended to be. The conveniences of Matori were all focused around landwalker capabilities because the people here were all unlike him, all breathing air and walking on land. Even from where he lay, Rewi could see the sails of things called ships being circled by some kind of foreign water bird. The people here required ships to carry goods. They couldn't swim the kind of distances Rewi could. And he could not even begin to match all that they could do... He couldn't fight. He couldn't cast magic. He didn't have any money for goods. And as he watched them work in their market or building their buildings, Rewi expected he wouldn't last long at those tasks, either. His body wasn't built for it.

Rewi had known to expect that, of course. He'd learned all he could about the landwalkers- Earthlings, and he knew that they lived lived unlike anyone from his own species...

But there was no way to prepare for it.

His eyes pinched shut. He couldn't do this, he couldn't do this. Gods, he didn't even want to! It was so hard, so much work. People like him weren't meant to be in places like this. Why had he come here? Why had he thought he could do this? Why had he thought he could do anything-

Rewi's eyes popped open as something wrapped around his wrist and yanked. The tug wasn't exactly powerful, and it was only because Rewi sat up of his own accord that he was moved at all.

When his head broke free of the water again, it was to see a young man standing over him, staring down at him through panicked golden eyes. His hand stayed wrapped around Rewi's wrist as confusion pinched his brow. "Are you alright?" The man demanded crisply as his eyes scraped down Rewi's bulky frame, taking in the odd tint of his skin and the curious twitch of his barbels. "You were under there for a long time," he explained. "I thought maybe you'd... I'm not sure what I thought, but-" His eyes narrowed, and Rewi had the impression that he didn't understand what was taking place before him. "What's happening?"

That seemed to be exactly what was going on. He sent the man a nervous-sort of smile. "Oh, it's okay," he replied, running a hand through his soaking hair. "I can breathe. I'm a-"

"You're a Kahikinan," the man stated. "Haven't ever seen one before. With your dark hair and brown skin, I kinda thought you was an Oban or something. Y'know, from out of water you could kinda look like one, I guess..." It wasn't until that moment that his fingers uncurled from Rewi's wrist.

Gentle waves still rippled around him, reaching up to nearly his chest even as he sat. They came up to the Matorian's hips while he was standing. Rewi gave a short laugh. "That's right. Were you planning on saving me from drowning?"

"Was if I had to," the Matorian retorted. "Figure it's a bit odd for any of your folks to be out here, so wasn't really expecting to find one. Seemed more likely you'd be an Oban."

"I see. We were pretty surprised to see your kind on our land, too."

"Hey, hey, now," the man balked. "Wasn't meaning any offense by it. Just caught me off guard, is all. We do a lot of fishing around here, so seems like someone swimming so close with them might be pretty good at that. Is that what you're here for? Make a little profit?"

Rewi's smile faltered just a fraction, but his new friend didn't seem to notice. "Er. No. It's not. My sister got hurt pretty bad. No one in my village really knows enough about magic to be good enough to heal her. I thought there might be someone here with that kind of skill."

"A healer, mm?" The Matorian man rubbed his chin. "Aye, we got a couple a those. They don't come cheap, y'know, 'specially not if you're trying to take 'em all the way across the sea."

He blinked, immediately caught off guard by this knowledge. "They wouldn't just want to help someone who needed healing?"

The answering guffaw of laughter was all Rewi needed to hear to feel completely foolish. Of course he shouldn't have expected anything to be free. Things really did just get harder and harder here... "Doubt it!" The Matorian snickered. "You may be able to luck out and find someone who is only in the business to see people taken care of, but I wouldn't bet on it. Good healers cost good money."

    "I don't have any money."

"You and me both," the man snorted. "But I tell ya what I do got: a job. An' I could get you one too. Wouldn't be nothing fancy, but it may suit your needs. Do a little work, make a little income, eh? I got a couple fisherman who work the docks and the boats, but I ain't got no one who can hunt the prey where it sleeps. Seems like something only someone like you could do. I got my own stall in the market. You just gotta catch the fish, an' I'll do the selling. We split the profit, huh? Maybe you'll luck out more than our other fisherman, seeing as you should be able to see what they can't. You interested?" He extended a hand.

He wasn't. Rewi wasn't here to make a living. He wanted to find someone to cure his sister so that he could go to the comfort of his own home. But if what this Matorian said was true, then finding one who would accept nothing as compensation might be more challenging than Rewi had hoped. He tipped his head, green eyes scanning the water as he mulled it over. At least it was a job he could complete from the water...

"Okay," he agreed in a bit of a grumble as he reached to clasp the man's hand. "I can give it a shot. There's not any harm in that."

With a tug, the young man lifted him to his feet. "Right, right, mate! Right! I'm Ymiren. Nice to have you on board."

"I'm Rewi. Nice to be on board, I guess."

BEACH LIFE
_________________________________________________________________________

If Rewi hadn't spent any time in Haukea, he would've had no idea how anyone could live right on the ocean. He was used to the still air of the swamp, with water so dense he could practically carry it in his hand. During his short visit to the Hapuna homeland, he'd felt the wind against his gills, tasted salt on the waves, looked up to the the sun sparkling against the water. His people were used to still and murk, where algae growth covered much of the water and shrouded their homes in a curtain of shadow.

It was different than what he knew, but he was at least aware that if Kahikinans could thrive in Haukea, they could survive in Matori. He just needed to adjust.

Ymiren had graciously (and quite enthusiastically) invited Rewi to use one of the spare rooms in his bungalow, but the Menehune was all too aware that these accommodations wouldn't really be of use to him. He needed to be in the water. Staying out of it for even just the span of a full night could dry his sensitive skin. The salt too, would take a little more getting used to, but his body was at least slightly more familiar with that. He'd had time to acclimate to that during his trip to Haukea- though that had been years ago, now...

He decided that so long as he was able to visit some sort of freshwater source with reasonable frequency until he was more adapted, that would be good enough. And there had to be a river or pond or something nearby.

Ymiren had said Matorians also needed freshwater to survive. They were even less capable of inhaling saltwater than Rewi was. And without a pair of gills to filter out salt and debris, their primary source of adequate hydration needed to be fresh. This kind of assurance pleased Rewi. For now, the salt still stung, like breathing in a gasp of cold air that chilled his throat. He would adjust, but until he did, it was nice to know that the option for something fresher was available to him. Ymiren would show him to the bath yard soon, he promised.

In the meantime, Rewi considered living arrangements.

From what he could see of nearby Matorian homes, the people of this land liked to be close to the water, perhaps touching in some cases, but never in it. Several well-built cottages on the beach seemed to rest on stilts above the water, with little plank walkways connecting them back to land. Other homes were farther into town, avoiding the sea altogether. Ymiren's was neither of this. The fisherman had confessed that while he needed to be as close to the ocean as possible for his work, he didn't make the type of coin that would let him afford materials to build a stilt-house solid enough to withstand storms when they passed.

    And they passed frequently.

The risk of losing his home to the tempestuous tides wasn't worth the money and effort it would cost to build. He made his home on the bank, far enough back that high tide wouldn't reach him, but close enough to be convenient for his trade. From sea to cart to town would still only take half a day! That was the freshest you could get around here, for sure.

The stilt-homes, while beautiful and coveted by tourists, weren't always so lucky. Ymiren had pointed out the remains of one to Rewi. From the back, it didn't really look so awful, but during his investigation of the spot, Rewi discovered that the ocean had snapped the two stilts facing away from town. Just two stilts had snapped, and the whole ocean-facing half of the home had plummeted into the water, leaving the back half standing, and the front half's roof peeking up from between the waves. It had been abandoned after the ocean claimed it, with any belongings and materials of use long-excavated.

But Rewi thought it was perfect. He didn't need to live in a box like the Tendaians did. He was used to allowing the swamp to cradle him, for nature to encompass him. Rewi's family had a shelter, with an above-water porch for fires, but it certainly wasn't to the degree Matorians boxed themselves in from the elements.

This caved-in stilt-home would provide all the shelter he'd need, so long as it kept the sun at bay during the heat of the day, and so long as he could use it to hide from larger, more dangerous creatures.

Even if it needed some fixing (how hard could it be to learn to secure these things), it would be his to do with as he pleased. Could he ask for more than that?

It stilt-home was, admittedly, difficult to maneuver in, at first. The floor was all slanted toward the ocean and slimy with algae, meaning that Rewi couldn't even begin to find footing to check out the back of the home. The front was littered in splintered wood, with spires shooting up at odd and dangerous angles (not at all a good combination with the slime). But so long as he stayed in areas that were submerged and didn't require him to walk, it seemed perfectly safe.

A shield of algae-slick boards kept him from being jostled about by the current, and a curtain of seaweed shrouded him from view of any creatures that may be looking for an easy bite.

The ocean seemed far more dangerous than the swamp, far more unforgiving. But there was something peaceful in the gentle sway the rocked him as he rested. There was something thrilling in the experience of the unknown (no matter how much anxiety it gave him). Tomorrow, Rewi would have to figure out exactly how to work for Ymiren and what tasks that entailed. For now it was enough to be at peace, resting in the shallow waters of the Matorian sea and surrounded by the sagging remains of a home long abandoned.
