Snowy Surprise Class Choice Solo The snow was crisp white and piling high in the bright morning sun. It was the typical scene for a Zenan winter, but still Elna could sit at the window to her room and watch it fall forever. It looked so nice when it was fresh, something that definitely wouldn’t stay that was for long. Once the wagons started to tread their usual morning paths it would be gray, dingy, and soiled. It was a shame really, but it couldn’t be helped.
Elna pushed to her feet, padding her way away from the windowsill and toward her closet. She had been living in Zena for most of her life, and while she had no plans to leave, Liio had already gone. He was busy traveling somewhere or another, and occasionally she would hear from him. She had to admit she was a little lonely, and she worried for him always, but she was happy if he was happy. She pulled out one of her thicker oversized coats and slipped her arms into the sleeves. She had to go to the market, so at least she would be able to enjoy the snow before anyone else had a chance to taint it.
She closed the door to the house behind her and reached into her pocket to make sure she had her coin with her. Assured that it was there she bounced down the stairs to their porch and into the calf high snow. It improved her mood immensely whenever she felt the crunch of the new snow under her boots, and this time was no different. She had a wide grin as she made her fresh set of tracks in the snow.
She hadn’t looked behind her, but if she had she would have noticed that her boots weren’t actually leaving tracks in her wake. The snow was quite visibly moving back into its original position after her feet pushed forward. It was a new development, but quite unnoticed by Elna, and it was almost as if the snow knew that she didn’t like disturbing it.
She reached the market just in time to see some of the buildings turning around their closed signs to open signs, and others unlocking their doors or propping them open to show that they were ready for business. Her first stop was the bakery. She needed fresh bread for lunch and this was the best bakery in town. The cool air rushed into the room as she pushed the door open, and the smell of baked good hit her squarely in the face. Mmmm, it all smelled very fresh and warm. She hovered over the trays of everything in the shop and eventually picked out two loaves of dense bread and a dozen cookies for good measure. ”Thank you very much!” She called out with a wave after they had bagged her up and sent her on her way.
The door slammed behind her with a ring of the bell and she looked at the handwritten note in her pocket to see what else she needed. The list wasn’t very long. Besides bread she only needed to stop by the tanners to pick up some leather for her mother. That building was back on her way home, so she turned on her heels in the street and headed back the direction she came. Only then she realized that there were no footsteps and it was fresh snow again. Confusion was apparent on her face and she looked around frantically, thinking she had somehow gotten turned around, even though she knew the town like the back of her hand at this point. All was the same as it should be… except for the snow. She took a few more steps in the direction she knew she was supposed to be going in and looked behind her again. Her tracks were once again gone. Her confusion intensified and she let out a sharp breath of air. Why… was she leaving no tracks?
She watched her feet this time, moving backward in the snow, and saw with her own eyes the snow gathering back together as her feet left the spot. If she hadn’t seen it herself she wouldn’t have believed it. Was she doing that? She stooped over and picked up a handful of snow and watched as the rest of the snow settled in its place, leaving no tracks.
She had heard about magic, but there wasn’t anyone in her family that was magically inclined. Was this what that was? Was she... magical? She tried to see if she could focus and… well.. Do something, she guessed. She had no idea how magic was supposed to feel. It felt silly to her as she stared intently at the snow in her hand, but nothing happened. She sighed and let out a puff of air, only for the snow in her hand to explode outward and start falling from the air like snowflakes again on their own.
She was convinced that she had done it now, but she was completely unsure how.
Her eyes were wide with wonder as she gathered up her baked goods closer to her chest and rushed to the tannery. She had no idea what to even do with that information. She knew nothing of magic beyond what generally everyone knew. How would she even begin to approach this? She supposed the same way she approached everything else: she would read about it.
But it wasn’t any less frightening.(Word Count: 921)

Ignite the Air Prentice Growth Solo Elna woke up to the smell of dark smoke. Her brain turned slowly, recognizing what it was she was smelling before she finally opened her eyes. Something was on fire. Her eyes were wide as she scanned the camp ground, only to realize that the flames from the campfire had somehow bounced and set her own blanket aflame. But she was too far for any cinders to realistically make it to her.
She made the sudden realization that made her stomach churn. She had made the fire that was burning through her sleeping bag. She jumped to her feet and tried to think about putting the fire out. She started to kick at the dirt they were laying on to smother the flames. It was finally out, but Elna was distraught. She had done that in her sleep. And to add insult to injury - and to wipe any doubt from her mind that she had caused the fire - she could see the campground getting brighter. She turned to see that the small campfire that was to keep them warm was now ten feet high and seemed tumultuous. She took the only guess she could and decided that she was causing that too, but was it linked to her emotions? Could she make this one go away? It was almost a frantic, helpless feeling, but she had to try to calm down. She needed to stop this before it got any worse.
Luckily everyone else was still asleep, but she closed her eyes and tried to even her breathing. She thought of nothing exciting. The snows of Zena, the gentle fall of flakes, and tried to take herself back to when the snow was a happy place for her to be. She peeked out behind her eyes and saw that the flames were back to normal. Oh Gods, how was she supposed to even sleep if she could set herself on fire at any moment? Or set someone else on fire? It could have been Liio. She looked down at her sleeping sack and saw the entire bottom half had just been eaten up in the blaze.
She was ashamed of herself again, but she knew she couldn’t ignore her magic anymore. She needed to find answers and possibly even someone to train her so things like this couldn’t happen again. She didn’t know how she was going to do it, but she needed to talk to Liio about it and control herself before something really bad happened and she would be to blame.
She looked through her backpack and pulled out her extra clothes. She had no sleeping bag anymore, but she also knew that she wasn’t going to be able to sleep anymore at this point anyways. Her exhaustion would show on her face in the morning, but she had more important things to worry about than a lack of sleep.
She stoked the fire with a solemn face, trying to get it just a little warmer now that she had no covers for herself.(Word Count: 506)
