“Does that make you my gallant knight?” The corrupt hummed as the two of them stood in front of the door. “I almost envy your true princess, she is very lucky to have someone such as yourself to protect her and her world.” It made her wonder if she ever had knights of her own in a past life.

When they stepped outside, Meridiana felt the rush of goosebumps race up her arms and wished for a moment that she had a better hold on the front of the blanket before they had stepped into the cold. The hood blew backward exposing her ears to the nipping bite of the sharp wind. “Goodness, gracious!”

Kind of foolish of me to think because I played a game of snowball tag with Zinkenite a year ago that I would be fine, the greatest lie she’d told herself to date. No worries, I’ll be fine… this was such a bad idea. Should have heeded his warning and brought winter clothes as he suggested.

A shiver raced up her spine and for a few seconds her teeth chattered loudly. Meridiana turned and buried her face against his chest until the wind died down and she was able to finally look up and see what he was seeing. Billions of lights dotted the sky above them and for a moment it felt like she was tucked away in a small snow globe with a galaxy dome overhead. “It’s beautiful,” so much so that the sight of it stole her breath away.

Whisler laughed softly, seeming delighted with her words and wrapped his arms around the shivering corrupt. “Of course it means that I’m your gallant knight. And ever shall be.”

He was swift to untie his blanket and wrap it snugly around Meri’s shoulders, placing his hat back onto his head and pressing his chin on the top of her head for a moment. “I told you it was cold. I told you, Meri, and you didn’t listen to me, nooo, why would you listen to your gallant knight who knows this place at least a little. Who knows.” He chuckled and watched as she finally looked up, amused with her reaction, but loving every moment of it.

“I bet…you never thought that you would come to space, did you, Meri? Is it everything you ever dreamed that it would be? Because…I think my wonder is quite magical, if I do say so myself. And you really…can’t beat the view. I just wish…there was somewhere that we could see it where it wouldn’t be so cold…one of these days I’ll explore more but…” He shrugged, rubbing her shoulders to try to keep her warm as another gust of wind blew.

“You’ll come back to visit me again…won’t you?”

Meridiana teasingly rolled her eyes at his sarcasm as he wrapped his blanket around her and rested his chin atop her head. For anyone who used to tease her about her height in grade school, it was for moments like this she was glad to be short.

“Be nice,” she playfully poked him in the side with her index finger. Whisler hadn’t been wearing his full uniform when they first met, both his hat and coat had been slung over his shoulder and set aside because of how warm it had been. Perhaps she should have listened a bit more carefully to Zinkenite’s teachings and been more aware of her surroundings, then maybe she would have trusted the kind Knight’s words more if only she would have noticed the fur-trimmed clothing he had with him.

That was in the past but now she knew better. Despite their opposing auras and factions, Whisler wasn’t out to deceive her; at least she hoped he wasn’t. There was still a tinge of doubt but even that was beginning to fade.

“You’re right though, never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined visiting a place such as this. It makes me wonder what Alphekka Meridiana is like.” Unfortunately, for reasons she had yet to understand, visiting was not something she was capable of. There was no calling or pull to visit a world of her own and even if there was, Meri wasn’t entirely sure how she’d get there. “But, as long as I am welcome, I would love to come back with you again.”

Meridiana leaned her head back and smiled up at him.

“Is that what you’re named after? Is it a star or a planet, do you know?” He gazed down at her with excited eyes and nodded. “You are always welcome, my Meri. Just name the time and the place that we should meet, and well.”

Whisler hesitated and leaned down, letting his lips lightly press against the corrupt’s forehead. “I can send you letters too, so expect them. I’ve been known to fill some of my letters with glitter so…expect that too.” Winking, the male held her just a bit closer. “Do you think it’s time to go in and warm up in the hot spring, because my face says it is. It’s cold! And I’m cold, and you must be nearly freezing to death. Next time, maybe you’ll bring warm clothes like I recommended!” He laughed and pressed his lips to her forehead again, allowing them to linger there for a long moment.

“You…make me quite happy, I hope you know that. Thank you for becoming my friend. I didn’t realize how badly I needed a new friend in my life.”

“I’m honestly not sure what I’m named after…” According to Wikipedia there was a star that shared the same name, but that didn’t mean the website was right or even that it was in any way shape or form related to her past life or world.

“As for this friendship, I think it is something neither of us knew we needed.” There was a pang of sadness that struck her heart when she gave voice to something her heart had known for far too long. It is true that she had a few people within the Negaverse that she truly cared for but correspondences between them were few and far in between.

Life as of late had been very lonely, so much so that not even the dates she had been on to do energy-draining had brought her any joy. Those she went out with were simply tools, a means to meet her quota; there was no feeling for any of them.

When Whisler pressed his lips against her forehead, Meridiana was once again reminded of the senshi she had met months ago and how differently the two responded to her presence. Where he was confident and sure of himself, relaxed even; the senshi was tense and rigid after she had kissed him and yet they both held her with a gentleness she yearned for.

Perhaps it was a bit unfair to have such a curiosity but Meridiana had to know what his reaction would be if she returned his affection, and so she rose up on her toes then brushed her lips against his. But when the moment came, fear held her back keeping her from kissing him fully;

Meridiana pulled back, eyes cast downward unable to meet his eyes. “I do think we should go back inside.”

Whisler nodded and smiled softly unwilling to let her go, but allowing it and reaching for her hand once again instead. He liked touching. Liked physical contact. He couldn’t help it, it was just how he was. “Are you very cold, Meri? I can make you something warm to drink, and I’ll have to check on the pizza, but it should be nearly done, I hope.”

The knight gave a shiver as he drew the corrupt inside, closing the outside door and removing the blankets from the both of them.

“Come on, my Meri. Into the warmth again. I have other blankets that aren’t half frozen that I’ll wrap you up on, you’ll be toasty in no time.”

He led her back into the warm chamber and sat her down on the edge of the mattress, drawing up two of the folded blankets and draping them around her shoulders. “Just relax, I’ll go and check on the food, and maybe see if I can’t make us some hot chocolate or something nice like that, if you’re interested. I have tea, too…which would you prefer?”

If there was a star named after that…that was most likely her star…maybe he could get her to write the name down and he could do some research of his own later…but that would be later. Not now. Now it was just time to get warm again.

Meridiana drew her knees up to her chest and curled into the warmth of the new blankets. “Tea please,” her wind kissed cheeks were pink from the chill as she watched him cross the room

“Is there anything I can do to help?” Although she did enjoy being doted on a bit, Meri wasn’t so much of a damsel in distress that she couldn’t be of any assistance. He was kind enough to bring her here and though she was kind of worried that she might develop a bit of a cold if she wasn’t careful, it didn’t mean she was completely useless either.

Whisler chuckled. “No, Meri. You just stay warm. I’ve got this. You’re my guest, after all.” He moved with a lazy grace, getting the water into a pot and placing it into the oven, relaxing near the flames and relaxing as they began to warm him through.

“It smells like the pizza is just about done, which is good, since I’m actually pretty hungry. And I hope you’re getting nice and warm because if you’re okay with it, I’d love to come and sit with you, and I do hope maybe you’ll share one of those blankets? See, that’s my real evil plan. You’re warming them for me so I get the maximum heat from them. I know, I know. I’m awful.”

He rolled his eyes at his bad joke and pulled the pizza out of the oven, cutting it into four large slices and putting one for each of them on a plate and walked back over to the corrupt, holding a plate out. “And if you’ll give me a moment, my princess, I’ll be right back with our drinks.” With a wink, he was gone again, pouring the hot water into two mugs and filling his own with two packets of cocoa, before sliding a tea bag into hers. “Sugar, Meri? You seem like you’d like some sugar.”

“I do, do I? Is there anything else I seem like I’d like?” Meri asked with a raised brow. A part of her suspected that he meant sugar for her tea, but with what nearly happened outside, she had to be sure.

A sultry smile tugged the corner of her lips as she opened the blankets almost invitingly, it was a test of sorts to see how far he actually expected to take whatever this was between them.

He paused and glanced over at her quizzically, raising an eyebrow. “Are you flirting with me, my Meri? Be careful, I’ll start flirting back and then where will we be?” He quickly turned back to the drinks, putting in two teaspoons of sugar into the corrupt’s and stirring it quickly, taking out the teabag after a moment.

“But who am I to ignore such an invitation.” He made his way back over, handing her the teacup and slipping in beside her, wrapping his free hand around her waist and laying his head on her shoulder. “You are quite warm now. And that makes me happy. I was worried about you out there. You have so much exposed skin, you could have gotten frostbite so easily.”

Whisler’s eyes were closed and he felt quiet relaxed, with the warmth of the blankets, and Meri’s body, as well as his mug of hot chocolate seeping into him. “Next time we go out, I’m going to bundle you up just like the kid in a Christmas Story. But, don’t stick your tongue to any poles, okay? I don’t want you to get hurt.”

He was grinning now, amused by where his mind was going, though perhaps it wasn’t the most…chaste of thought processes.

Meridiana accepted the cup of tea and held it for a moment between both hands enjoying the warmth it offered to her cold fingertips before testing the temperature with her lip.

However, when he made the comment about not sticking her tongue to any poles she had to stop herself before she choked on the hot beverage. She turned her head to glance in his direction and in her eyes there was an amused look that knew without a doubt where his mind went with that one.

Two can play at this game..

“It’s not me you should worry about.” Leaning into him Meri whispered in his ear. “I’d be more worried about whether or not the compass can still point north if it gets too cold inside.”

Whisler paused and laughed softly, resting closer to her after her whispered words. “Meri, Meri, Meri. If I am not mistaken, it does sound like you’re coming on to me, and I kind of like it.” He winked and reached down to take a bite of his pizza.

He reached up after and stroked her cheek with the back of his hand, taking a long moment to gaze into her blue eyes before he leaned close and pressed a kiss to her forehead.

“I really, really do like having you here. It’s very comfortable to be with you. And you’re fun, and so easy to tease. I don’t think I’d get tired of this if we did it a hundred times, you know. And…just so you know, I’m sure if it got too cold, the compass could still point north. I’m just saying.”

“You know, I don’t think I would feel comfortable making a comment like that to just anyone.” Definitely not to Zinkenite, or Zac, that’s for sure. Perhaps to Jasper but it had been so long since they spent time together chances are she would instead revert back to the facade of being a proper lady as her parents tried to raise her.

There was simply something about Whisler that allowed her to feel so relaxed that the filter between her mind and mouth did not feel needed. She made a jab at him and he, in turn, poked right back rather than giving her a questioning look that would have otherwise turned this into a very awkward situation.

His kiss pulled from her a pleased hum.

“So, I’ve been searching for this Ashanite you spoke of when we last met and I think I may have found him.” It turned out that he was a General and had an office space in the Dark Kingdom somewhere in the castle. Now all she needed was for someone to teleport her there so she could speak wtih him as long as that was something Whisler still wanted.”

Meri lifted one of her slices of pizza and took a bite. The cheese was hot against the roof of her mouth but she didn’t want to look undignified by spitting it out. “Ah- ow.” She winced after finally swallowing.

“Anyway-” The corrupt took a drink of her tea then set the cup back down for the time being. “Do you still want me to try and put together a meeting for you two?” For all he had done for her so far, it was the least she could do to repay the kindness he had shown her.

Whisler paused and stiffened slightly at the mention of Ashanite. He was so focused on the flirting they were doing, and had been about to retort that he doubted that she ever felt uncomfortable when she dropped this bomb. And suddenly it felt as though the warm, comfortable bubble that had surrounded himself and Meri simply faded. Utterly disintegrated.

He managed a smile. “So…he’s still alive, hm? Figured…and please don’t take this the wrong way but almost hoped he was dead or something so that I didn’t have to face the facts that he really was avoiding me. What a b*****d.”

The knight leaned back, and then paused, shifting and kicking off his boots with some difficulty, laying down on the bed, pillowing his head on Meri’s lap as he had on that park bench. “Look, Meri…if you want to talk to him and mention me, I’m not going to stop you, but honestly? It’s been…God, we’re going on what, two years of him not talking to me now? I think whatever we had…is gone. And I’m just being a stubborn, clingy idiot in thinking about him. And sending him stupid notes. Though, I stopped the notes a while ago. Maybe he just got tired of all of the glitter bombs…”

He looked up at her and there was pain in his eyes, pain and bewilderment. “…I don’t want to keep chasing him if he wants nothing to do with me. He’s made his meaning clear. He’s never tried to help me free myself from the transcendence. He’s never done anything past lead me on with charming smiles and sweet caresses. At least…you seem to actually care about me. And that means a lot, Meri. A hell of a lot. So…thank you.”

“I’m so sorry…” Meridiana apologized softly.

Setting her plate to the side she combed her fingers through his golden-colored hair. “From the way you spoke of him when we met, I assumed that you two were still close. That you two were just like ships passing in the night having trouble seeing one another.”

To her knowledge, there was no real way to connect with someone of the other faction. Whisler mentioned something about a letter which seemed to be a knight thing but as far as she was aware agents, or corrupts like she was, didn’t have a way to respond to such things.

“I apologize, I truly didn’t mean to upset you.” All she wanted was to give him something else to look forward to. Something she could do for him as thanks for bringing her to his wonder.
