Absorbed by her curiosity, Adaline plopped herself on her butt, crossing her legs and scooting forward. Her tongue darted out to wet her lips, pressing together as she shifted this way and that until her knees pressed against the metal of the wall.

"Hm?" She looked up and over her shoulder, as if she was just remembering that she wasn't alone.

Right, right, she was in the elevator with someone else.

"It's okay, I've got a youtube video pulled up to help me. I'm not like cutting anything," she didn't have any tools after all, "so it probably won't be a big deal. I'm just like looking at it y'know?"

She returned her attention to her phone, pressing play and listening to the drawling voice of the man on the screen when a battery warning popped up.

BATTERY LOW
20% REMAINING
.

"Well, that is if my phone's battery lasts that long."

"Look, learning how to do things as you go is nice and all, but when it comes to something that could end up with us plummeting down to our death, we probably should leave this stuff to the professionals."

He tried to keep his voice light, maybe even a little bit playful (or tried to, at least), lest he be called an a** again for his attitude but Reid was really starting to panic at the thought of the elevator circuitry being messed with to the point that they'd be stuck in there even longer than needed or the crazy woman hurting herself.

"Please? Call 911? The phone doesn't have much life left -- just one call??"

Tuning him out was easy because once Adaline's attention was on something, well she was too focused to pay attention to much of anything else.

In fact, she was busy angling her phone between her crossed legs in a manner that kept it upright so that the light shined into the panel and she was leaning forward, fingers gently running over the wires but not doing anything with them yet.

Reid's voice was just a buzz in the background, easily ignored like a fly that needed to be knocked away from time to him.

"Oh. Did you say something?"

He was about two seconds away from snatching her phone and holding himself up in the corner of the elevator, keeping it out of reach from the girl until the battery died for good but Reid couldn't bring himself to bully the girl, even if she was potentially threatening his life.

"Call. The. Police." He said slowly, trying to enunciate his words so that she'd hear him amidst all her Googling and researching. "For the love of god, please call 911 before your phone dies!"

.... or before he did!

........ were elevator cages limited on oxygen supply???

Unfortunately for Reid, Adaline's attention was a fleeting fickle thing and the moment she turned her attention back towards the panel, she had tuned him out again.

Abruptly her phone's flashlight turned off, another battery warning popping up on her screen again.

LOW BATTERY
10% of battery remaining
.

Well poo.

"Well that's annoying. How am I going to get anything done without a light source?"

The flashlight turned off and Reid, in a moment of cowardice, used that opportunity to reach forward and snatch the phone from the girl's hand, desperately flipping it over so that he could do the responsible thing and dial the proper authorities for help.

Only....

Reid had never owned a smart phone before in his life.

There were no buttons standing out to push. It was like a tiny, small computer without a mouse to navigate the screen with. Desperately, he tried pushing his finger all around the screen, searching for the ability, searching for some way to pull the numbers up so he could dial the three simple numbers he needed.

LOW BATTERY
5% of battery remaining.

In full panic mode, he began pushing ALL of the buttons on the screen, opening app after app in an attempt to find the panel of numbers. Oh god, oh god, oh god -----

And then the phone died and he let out a pained, audible groan.

Adaline blinked several times, staring at the space where her phone used to be and then, slowly, she turned her head towards him. It was almost amusing to watch him fumble with her phone and ultimately fail because he had clearly never seen a smart phone in his life.

Or used one, she supposed was the better thought.

"Um, do you even know how to use my phone?" She asked, shifting on the elevator floor until she was facing him. Both hands were on her knees as she looked up at him, almost amused.

His groan earned the arch of her brow. "What happened?"

"It died."

It was probably the most dramatic phrase Reid Covey had ever used in his life, the useless cellular device soon returned back to its owner as he let out another exasperated sigh. They were officially stuck there. In the dark. In an elevator. And who knew if anyone even realized they were in there?

"Why didn't you call the police?"

The question wasn't accusatory as much as it was out of sheer confusion. Shouldn't that have been one of the first things one would do while stuck in an emergent situation?

"Why didn't you call the police?" Adaline shot back, holding her hand out for her phone and hoping he'd see it because it was suddenly very, very dark without her flashlight.

Fingers wrapped around it and she shifted to put it in her back pocket. Not having it to play with would suck but it was fine.

"Don't you like have some sort of phone?" Clearly he didn't have a smart phone but that didn't mean he didn't have one period.

Fingers drummed against her leg.

"Do you wanna play twenty questions while we wait for someone to notice we're stuck?"

Thankfully being submerged in darkness meant his companion failed to see how red his face had grown from the accusation she'd countered with, Reid failing to be prepared for such a simple and expected return response.

"It... It broke. I just haven't had time to go get a new one."

Leaving out the details that it was a flip phone with no fancy technology or doohickies attached to it and the fact he was also extremely cheap being the real reason why he hadn't bothered to finance a new one.

He sat there, quiet for a moment, unsure of what to do.

Thankfully, she offered a suggestion... that provided, unfortunately, little help to the young man who'd taken up a seat in one of the corners of the elevator cage.

"I don't...know how to play that game," he confessed quietly.

At his explanation, Adaline nodded in understanding. Phones were expensive if you weren't up for an upgrade or trade in or whatever. Things always broke at inconvenient times.

"Maybe you can get the company to get you one? They need to be able to reach you some how yeah?" It seemed like the company they worked for could afford to do something like that even if she didn't know what he did.

She wished she could see his face, she could be talking to a wall at this point and wouldn't have any clue. "Oh, well it's really easy. Basically we just ask questions back and forth. It's so we like get to know each other better or whatever? Like. Okay so I'll start," Adaline explained, seeming to take no breaths as she talked. "What's your favorite color?"

Well, she didn't laugh at him, so that was a good start to the game. Her question, however, gave him a longer pause than he'd have liked. Then again, it was a question he'd... never really had to think about before.

Favorite color? Why would he need a favorite color?

"Um."

Silence filled the small box as he deliberated for a second, finally answering with a half-confident, "Black. I think."

It seemed like a safe answer, at least. One he couldn't be judged on - everyone wore black at some point, right? And it went with everything, which was an added bonus.

He waited for her next question until he quickly realized that she was waiting on him to ask a question.

"Uh.... what's your... favorite... color?"

He winced, instantly regretting agreeing to play some silly question game in the first place. Who had time to think up random questions on the fly!!!

"Black...?"

That sounded like such an...emo color choice but Adaline chose to ignore it even though she was brimming with the desire to tell him that black technically wasn't a color. It was the absence of color but that kind of thing would go over Scar's head, she was certain.

"Well, I like greens," she said, humming as she tried to think of what her actual favorite color. "Pale greens probably?" Her favorite shirt was green, that had to mean something.

"Do you have any siblings?" She asked next.

She reiterated the color back at him in such a way that had Reid regretting his choice. He probably should have gone with blue, that was a better color to suggest, right? Or green. Or... or it really didn't matter, he'd already messed up and there was no going back.

Miss Google picked green for her color (why didn't he think of green!) and spouted off another question in the blink of an eye, as if she didn't have to think about it. Judging by how much she chattered... well, she probably didn't have to think about it, not like Reid had to.

"I don---"

Lights flew on at that moment, the elevator whirring to life and cutting him off mid-sentence with a startled intake of breath. The box began moving, down, down, down, giving the duo just enough time to climb their way back up to their feet before the metal doors finally opened.

"I'm glad we didn't have to resort to the escape hatch," he mumbled as he stepped out, tossing a glance back at the girl. It was the best joke he could manage, for a guy who typically never ever made jokes.

Lights came popping on and Adaline had to shield her eyes as they struggled to adjust to being flooded with the capacity to see again.

Ow, seeing hurt.

"I mean, it would've been cool. Just like the action movies?" Adaline retorted unfolding her legs before her to stretch them out just a little bit before she sprung back up onto her feet.

Now that she could see, she put the panel back where she needed to and stepped up to the boy.

"Imma go charge my phone, maybe we can play the game later. Byeeeee~" She flashed him the peace sign before she darted off.
