“I’m right,” he said, grinning at her. She may have been hard to read for others, but he could read her like a book. He knew she didn’t like the idea before she said she didn’t.
“I do,” he said. “I also think some of those kids you really dislike might, too. That dimglowed trader, what’s his name, Marinel?” He was teasing her. His expression was thoughtful, but his eyes were shining with laughter that had yet to escape. “I think he might. But we never know what dragons are looking for.”

Astriana crossed her arms in front of her, giving him a look that said he needed to stop reading her so well. Only some people could do it and he seemed to be one of those. Granted, she had definitely put him through the ringer, but he had been so persistent. When he spoke about some of the others, another snort came from her.
"Yeah, I am sure they will, even if I still think they are dimglows. As for that one, it is his brother I don't like. Him, I just think he has always been too far attached to his brother, til the last hatching we had in Western,"she retorted.

“Dragons pick dimglows every hatching,” R’elien grinned. “That’s why the weyrlingmaster is so important. If everyone knew everything they needed to know, a lot of us wouldn’t have jobs.” He offered her a shrug. “Maybe he was,” he agreed. “I remember when I met the kid, he was clumsy. He bumped into me and started to apologize. Looked like he was about to cry.”
He looked around, seeming to be searching for Astri’s flit. “He’s made progress since then.”

"Some people I do not see what the dragons see in them at all, R'elien. Though, I guess they see something I do not, since we know the dragons know what they are doing. It is a good thing we have those in charge to whip them into shape or they would stink as riders. And trust me, you should have seen him the touching before his brother impressed. For awhile, he was still wanting to make his brother proud. I get it, brothers are important, but I don't go following mine around like a puppy,"she growled. As if Caelia knew, she appeared from between, landing on Astri's shoulder.

R’elien entertained the thought of Astri-dragon on the sands, rejecting most, if not all the candidates on the sands. It would have been very different, he knew, if humans could pick. “Yeah. I would have stunk as a rider,” he smiled at her. “I didn’t know anything about riding, when I Impressed.”
He paused. He thought on the boy he’d met, and then said, “Isn’t he the one who told everyone his brother died in Thread, and then months later had a brother?” He grinned at her. “I’m not excusing the puppy behavior. But I can’t imagine losing someone and having them come back to life.”

"I can't believe you would have stunk, you are so relaxed when you are up there. Though, I suppose we can thank the Weyrling staff for making you that way, when you didn't know what you were doing. Yeah, I suppose he had said that, but still, no excuse. You should be able to stand on your own two sharding legs. Yes, riders have each other to rely on, but you also have to take some initiative yourself. I get he was glad to have his brother, but there are other ways to express it,"she pointed out.

“I would have stunk,” R’elien repeated, and laughed. “I have to seem relaxed! There would be so many riders on me otherwise. But when Thread falls, I’m terrified.” He looked at her for a moment. “Thinking about you, down here and safe keeps me grounded. I can’t imagine how I’ll feel once you’re up in the air with me.”
“Why does what he does matter so much to you?” He asked, after a moment. “Love, people mature at different paces, candidate or not. He lost his family and got it back. You don’t know what he’s gone through. You only know what you’ve gone through. Try to be less judgemental. You’ll only cause wrinkles.”

"Well, I don't want to be safely down here, I want to be up there protecting people. I can't do that by cleaning out stalls and making sure medical supplies are stocked up on. No, I need to be up there fighting, so that people do not have to lose people. I have a brother down here that I have to protect and you know I can do it. As for him, it doesn't matter to me, except when he is trying to get me to hang out with him,"she huffed. No, Astri didn't know what he had gone through, but that didn't mean she didn't know what pain was like.

R'elien knew how she felt. Being a candidate was rough, especially when one had friends who were dragonriders. He had felt useless as a candidate while his friends learned to fly on their dragons. Thread had come after he'd Impressed and even then, it had terrified him. They hadn't been prepared.
"He wants to be your friend?" R'elien laughed in sheer surprise. "Honestly, could that boy be any more dimglowed? It's obvious how you feel about him."

"Yeah, I guess so, he sure has tried hard to get me to talk to him. Well, when we weren't arguing about what a dimglow his brother is, that is. And excuse me, sir, but I seem to remember you not knowing when to leave me alone once upon a time. Though, I am glad you didn't,"she admitted the last part softly.

R’elien laughed. “You got me,” he admitted. “I knew better than to stop talking to you!” He said. “You were the most beautiful woman I had ever seen.” And though he wouldn’t admit it to Astri, she was his light. Shards, if she hadn’t come into his life when she had... He didn’t know what he would have done.
“Maybe he sees the same traits I fell for,” he said, then. “He’s too late. I’m not giving you up.”

“Regardless of whether you believe it or not, you are the most beautiful woman on all Pern,” R’elien said. He immediately ducked, in case it wasn’t a bluff. He didn’t know what she’d throw at him. The closest thing to her was him, wasn’t it?
“Oh, you just like me?” He teased. He moved to kiss her cheek. “Good. I’m glad you’ve decided to keep me.”

Astri gave him a glare, since he seemed to duck just after he called her beautiful. How was it this man had such a way to get under her skin and that she actually liked it? She went back to working on shining Abaven's hide, when she heard what he said yes.
"Well, I think you knew I had decided that a bit ago. Though I did enjoy putting you through your paces,"she spoke, a smirk in her eyes.

Seeing that she didn’t throw anything at him, R’elien straightened and grinned at her. He moved to take her hand and playfully swung their hands between them. “You’re beautiful,” he said. One day, she might allow him to tell all Pern how he felt about her. He didn’t think today was that day.
“You were pretty cold hearted,” R’elien complained.”I left all those gifts for you...”
