Jolene's shoulder still rolled back at the impact, expecting a harder hit than she received. That, or she was getting used to it. Toughening up, perhaps? A girl can hope.
"Who lost their what?" Jolene asked cluelessly as she swung and clipped the other trainee again. She was starting to think maybe she was just embarrassing herself.

Jolene turned her head to look and got blasted pretty hard before turning to smack him right back. "I wasn't ready," she frowned deeply at him while mentally licking her wounds.

Maybe if his weapon had the energy and interest to push him he'd do better but -- as always -- Septimus was more or less quiet, like he was sleeping in the back of Vash's mind. HP: 21/40 DMG: 3

Jolene felt the graze and rushed in to deliver - barely a clip of her own. Maybe she wasn't cut out for this? Self doubt starting to roll in, invading her every thought. She started to forget if any of her attacks actually made any impact at all.
And her weapon was no help.

At least her weapon actually seemed to care. Vash was, more or less, on his own; Septimus just slightly adjusting his aim so that he hit, instead of missing. HP: 19/40 DMG: 2

Not that Hanta actually was helping when Jolene swung and - finally connected and with a hit that was actually decent. Jolene gave a small victorious squeak - then quickly doubted herself for it.
Oh she was being cocky, this was terrible, that other hunter is probably going to teach her a lesson now for it.
She gave Vash a quick, "sorry!" for his troubles.

Vash probably should have told her not to be sorry -- this was, after all, the point of a spar. But that actually had stung a little, a thwap through his shield, so he scowled at her as he fired back. HP: 13/40 DMG: 1

Jolene was starting to feel out of breath, her last hit took a lot out of her both physically and emotionally. Oh, that scowl probably stung more than his projectile and she gave him a hurt look for his efforts.
