I got rid of one book once, and I've regretted it ever since!
There, that's my two cents.

Well, I was hoping to one day maybe open a used book store, and, with the exception of my favourites, sell my books that way, in the hopes people will do trades in the process so, I'll get intoduced to more and more books.

I take them to the library to the bookswap. This is rare, but sometimes I have old books that are battered or something, and I just want to switch them. For newer books, I give them away as presents to people who I know would love them.
I'm a packrat, so I'll never part with most of my books.

I recently gave lots of childrens books I owned to charity - they were looking for childrens' books inparticular.

I hate getting rid of books, but when I have to, I give them to the library. Then I know they'll be safe, appreciated, and I can get them out again if I want to reread them.

I trade in the books that I know I won't read again for different books at this Used Bookstore. It gets rid of my old ones and provides me with new reads for free!

Obsidian-Nightfire I hate parting with books. But there is a time when books I no longer care for or read just end up cluttering my shelf. So what I have decided to do is join http://bookcrossing.com and register my books and leave them in a public place for others to pick up. I second bookcrossing. I adore that site. It always leads me to books I may not have read otherwise, but end up loving. If you were looking to get money, I'd try a used bookstore or amazon.com.

Those very few times that I have a book I don't want, I give them to friends or relatives. Sometimes I donate them to charities.

I don't know if I've ever! eek
Lol, but if I did...I'd probably donate some to my local library and the connected book seller...I'd give to any friend who was interested...and I might sell them on Amazon.

It's never really happened before until now. I have several books I no longer want and I don't know what to do with them. There is a library and used book store never where I live and I could always have a yard sale but I'm thinking of using them for bookcrossing, freecycling, or maybe even geocaching. They sound like more interesting ways to give and recieve books.

In an effort to keep from ending up on the show Hoarders I make a point of donating any book I haven't looked at with fondness or thought about in 6 months or longer. Unfortunately this often means that later on I have to go back and borrow these books from the library or re-buy them, but it keeps shelf space (A precious commodity in my house) free.
I either give them up for credit at the nearest used book store or donate them to thrift stores since those are the places I go to most for books. If I knew how to donate to the library I'd likely do that instead. I understand there are book trading sites on line but I'm none too fond of the whole "trust people to send them back/pay their share of the shipping" idea.

I rarely get rid of books, even if I haven't read them in years and they're so old no-one can salvage them sweatdrop A few years ago my entire room was shin-deep in books because my bookshelf was full.
I have gotten rid of about a dozen books, but they turn out to be ones that I really regret not keeping.

I forgot about this thread... xd I've since found a used bookstore to take my titles in for store credit so that's what I do with the ones that none of my friends seem to want.
