Clownfish Stallion! Username:Ryghann Familiar Preference List: Cannot win Familiars Entry: He'd had it up to his eyeballs with their mockery! The orange and white Seathi was tired of their games that made fun of his differences! With the recent events happening all around him, he figured now was a better time than ever to leave anyway. He'd been out near the edges of his homeland, frustrated with the group of Seathi that would pester him about his paws. Called him "Stubbs" they did, thought it would be fitting for his already weird demeanor. He was a comedian and wished to bring laughter to his village when times were dark. But that didn't help him now. Maybe he would find some others to make happier in these dismal days.
Taking a moment to steady himself for adventures into the unknown he spared a glance back to his home. He made his goodbyes from his heart and set out into the waters, unaware of the shadow behind him. The brave clown fish was making good speed for one so small. As he traveled his eyes were filled with wonder at all the new sights. Beautiful arrays of color amidst the deep blues, little creatures crawling into crevices of coral and sea grass. It was absolutely wonderful, a real eye opener.
He felt a cold chill run up his spine. Was there something there? He looked around frantically to see if maybe those jerks were after him but was only met with the soft rustling of nearby sea grass. He decided to face the lingering fear the only way he knew how. "H-hey, why are fish so smart? Because they go to school!" He paused and heard a faint giggle from a thick patch of sea grass. He perked up at someone laughing at his jokes. "Ok....why was Marty always so envious? Because he was a JELLY-fish!" The laughter grew louder until he found the source, a beautiful orange and white Koi. She was rolling on the seafloor almost crying with laughter.
The Clown fish couldn't help but laugh too, he'd been worried over nothing. Scared of a little Koi-fish? Ha! He swam closer to the pretty lady "So you like my jokes? That's great! What were you doing following me?" She finished laughing and smiled sweetly at him, "Oh I've been a fan of your jokes for quite some time! I just was too nervous to talk to you...that's all." Her fins swirled around her face to hide her blush. "Well...I'm glad you spoke to me! No one else seems to like my jokes at all!" He thought for a moment and an idea lit up his eyes, "Say, I'm going on an adventure to find an audience that I can make laugh. Want to come with me?" The Koi-girl did an excited flip and nodded frantically. "Oh yes! You're so funny and nice! I'd LOVE to!"
His heart was glowing with happiness for finding a friend that he could tell jokes to. "Let's go!" He smiled as they swam together.

Clownfish Stallion! Username: belloblossom Familiar Preference List: Cannot win familiars. Entry: Coral cared quite a lot. He cared about what his mane looked like and whether his scales were shimmery or dull. He cared about what other Soquili thought about him, especially considering that Osinea was a relatively small village. That meant everyone knew everything about each other and if he was going to be the topic of gossip (like he typically was) than he wanted it to be on things he had control over, like how jealous others were of him for his good looks. He did not want the other villagers to be intruding on his personal life, however. What he did with his colt-friend was their business, so there! It was Reefe that Coral cared the most for. Coral made sure to keep up with the latest news to make sure that this wasn't occurring, for Reefe was a rather private fish.
The two stallions had often imagined just going off together, though they were scared to leave their home. Sure, the ten year tradition was unnerving every time someone got chosen, but it's not like they could ever be picked, they weren't very standout-ish enough. There was always someone prettier than Coral or more secretive than Reefe. As far as they knew they were in the clear.
But then The Beast, as It was sometimes referred to, started to stir. Around the gossip mill, there were rumblings being heard from the Cavern of Sacrifices. There was also more conversation among the village elders about sending in more sacrifices. When that particular tidbit reached Coral's ears, he sped to find his mate.
"We have to go. Now." There was a conviction in his voice that had made his mate, who was sorting out Coral's hairpins, pause to look at him. "Reefe, we need to leave. We need to just leave. No turning back." Blue eyes blazing, he swam forward, looking longingly at all the possessions he had before shaking his head. If he brought his things as well as Reefe, it would look like they were running. He would find new, perhaps more beautiful things, where ever he and Reefe would call their home next.
So, swimming casually from their abode until they passed any signs of life, he wrapped his front leg around his mate's shoulders and pressed him close to his flank, before they started their ascent up, in search of a place where It could not follow.

Clownfish Stallion! Username: Artymus Familiar Preference List: Cannot win familiar Entry: Rorie hadn't realized he was so far from the village. It had been his routine to take a swim, and think back over what happened that day. Things were getting increasingly dangerous, but he was determined to not be made a victim. His family had willingly gone to sacrifice long ago, and his friends were happily going to their fates as well, but that wouldn't be him. Would anyone miss him? He was sure not. Rorie had been watching the sand as he swam, his mind becoming more and more frantic at the possibility that he was next to be chosen as Sacrifice. With a sigh, he looked up and realized he was much further than his normal boundary. Maybe this was a sign. He looked back only once. There was nothing for him anymore, and it was time he lived for himself. Quickly, he continued swimming, hoping to find somewhere better than where he had been.

Sea Slug Mare! Username: Kivras Familiar Preference List: Koi, Octopus Entry: There was only ever one option.
Being content didn't come with the lack of those fleeting little thoughts about what lie beyond. Each time even the smallest opportunity opened up, she would wave as those moments passed by, and awaited the next time. There would always be a 'next time'. But once one found themself with the opportunity currently presented to her- An open ocean and a fair distance between her and the village- it seemed this would be the last of the 'next time's.
Behind lay danger. Ahead lay danger unknown. Her fate if she went back was certain. If she continued, it was uncertain. Yes, there were stories, tales, and even legends of the Above, of the Great Open, but never had she thought about if they were true. They were tales of the Mad, the Stranger, and the Old. They could all be true, they could be partially true, or they could be untrue. While nothing was certain about what lie ahead, it was very certain what await behind. Even if It had not been there now, there was nothing to call her back. The stories...they called her onwards.
A glance upwards and her mind had been made up. The surface shimmered, inviting her to break through and see what lie beyond. A future, the unknown, the excitement, and the promise of at least one thing; Survival was alright...but she wanted to live.
One last glance backwards, a fleeting thought about her little trinkets she was leaving behind, and she lifted a hoof.
A wave goodbye before the ascent.

Clownfish Stallion! Username: Kyaishi Familiar Preference List: Koi, octopus Entry: Whether or not he was willing to admit he wanted it, the opportunity was right there, waiting in the gentle currents and snatches of sunlight that he could see through the water's depths.
He had never believed it would come to this. The idea of leaving his village had been a far-off dream (or nightmare) that he had never let himself consider. The concept had been both scary and thrilling, but at the moment, with this choice laid out before him with no hope of turning back from either decision... it was just scary. But what could be up there? the lilting voice of curiosity and wonder from the back of his mind prodded at his resolve, turning his head away from the terror that clouded his thoughts for a moment, but it didn't take long for doubt to come crashing back in.
He was insane for considering this. His village was perfect- so what if some soquili were disappearing? They had probably just wandered off, there was no evidence to suggest something darker at work. He had friends there, people who would miss him if he left, people who might need his help... and yet...
They would leave you behind if it were them, wouldn't they? the voice surfaced again with a cruel lilt of truth, making him cringe in poorly concealed angst as he forced himself to acknowledge it. It was true- they had done little about the disappearances, less still when they learned what was behind them, and what few answers they got, they coveted like lost treasure and refused to share with the others. Whatever was going on, there was a good chance he wouldn't learn about it until it became too dangerous to ignore... possibly until it was too late altogether.
There were whispers, sometimes, that the disappearances were deliberate. That they weren't disappearances at all, but sacrifices intended to keep... something... at bay. He could barely comprehend the barbarity at first, dismissing the mere mention as preposterous, but... what if it were true? In recent months, there was a darkness hanging over the clear waters of their village- not anything literal or tangible, but something that felt oppressing, suffocating. Some days, it was all he could do to carry on like nothing was wrong, even when he could feel the weight of it pressing down on him, whatever it was.
He still didn't know what was going on, he told himself. What if it was nothing, what if it was all in his head? But what if it isn't? the voice again broke through the chaos of his indecision, and for once, without question, the choice was made.
He swam upwards.

The small orange blob bobbed with in the waters. So much was going through the small things mind. Panic mostly. As his mind continued to lock itself down the current pulled him further and further away from home. He couldn't even remember how he had gotten out this far to begin with. Had he been lost in his thoughts again and gotten lost cause he was not paying attention? Ocean blue orbs blinked as he drew himself from his thoughts. Thinking on it wasn't going to help him now.
Glancing back over his shoulder from where the current had taken from him, his home now lost to the darkness of the depths. He could go back, but the question was should he? The small one had already drifted this far he could at least try to make something out of it. Maybe they wouldn't call him lazy or air headed anymore. If only he could show them back home that he was more then just that, or even just to prove to himself that he could be more then what he has become.
This was an opportunity. It arose and now he was going to take it to explore the grand ocean. Although hesitant he turned away from the direction of home and began to swim further into the unknown.

Clownfish Stallion! Username:AislingJuno Familiar Preference List: not eligible for a fam. Entry:
Koro’s earliest memories involved listening to his grandmother’s stories. She’d tell him about her past when she lived outside the village. She told him about a friendly creature called dolphins that were the most intelligent beings she had ever known. Koro heard many stories but his favorite was about the sun. His grandmother often called him her little sun, since his coat coloring was just like the sun. She told him that the sun was so bright that no being was able to look at the sun for more than a few seconds.
The village had many laws-
Few questioned the laws because the village was a safe secure place. Koro had often heard from the elders that the ocean beyond the village was terrible place. There Predators lurked waiting for the unprepared. It was dangerous for water soq to go near the water’s surface or near any landmasses. Land soq were giant beast with an unstoppable appetite for water soq. These stories scared Koro but he also remembered the stories his grandmother had secretly taught him about the ocean outside the village.
The elders never spoke about the past, perhaps they were a generation that felt that past events were too difficult to talk about or else they had made a pact to never talk about the monster in the trench. However recent events made many of Koro’s generation question the village elders. Finally leader explained that a monster lived nearby and every ten years sacrifices were picked. Losing a couple villagers every ten years was a necessary price to pay to keep the monster at bay.
“Well it’s easy for the head of the elder to say the sacrifice to the monster is a necessary price. None of the village elite or their families have ever been sacrificed,” Koro said his voice dripping in anger. He was currently swimming away from the village’s territory for the first time.
His anger was fueling his need to explore the ocean. The usual fear he felt at the unknown was dissipating. Instead he was filled with wonder as he gazed at his new surroundings. The water seemed a lighter blue the closer he rose to the surface. Schools of fish he had never seen flashed their silvery scales as they swam past him. He swam and swam until he was finally at the surface. His eyes strained as they slowly became adjusted to the sun. He gazed at the sky wistfully, his grandmother was right the sun was amazing. For an hour he floated on his back enjoying the warm of the sun on his face and trying to untangle his restless thoughts. Finally he had come to a decision. Life was dangerous everywhere and the village was not the safe haven it portrayed. He would sneak back into the village and take his grandmother and sister. They would take their chances living out in the open ocean, because while it might be dangerous at least they would be free.

Daucina treaded water. He'd never been this far from home before and his heart was racing with the possibilities. Each stroke would take him further than he'd ever been. It was all he had dreamed of for his entire life--to be free
He was far enough away that no one would be able to catch him if he kept on going. He'd never have to see that place again or hear those horrible screams.
But....
She was there.
Her hair had streaks of grey in it now. He could see his mother humming as she wove little sea baskets. She, of course, would want him to go. She had tried all those years ago to flee only to have one fin crippled the eve before she was to leave.
So she had stayed. She had raised him and loved him with all her heart. Her "torchbearer", her bringer of light into a village of darkness. Her sunshine, she'd called him though neither of them had ever seen the sun.
Daucina closed his eyes. He would leave, he would go just as they both wanted. But not without her, not without his mother Nerissa. He made the fateful decision to go, but first he would go back.
He would not dare to look on that mysterious bright light called sunshine without her. They would go together or not at all.

Sea Slug Mare! Username: Mewsings of An Angel Familiar Preference List: Reroll Entry:
A choice. And one she had dreaded. She had ventured far from the only place she had known. The only comfort and peace she had ever experienced. She had friends there... but she knew naught what would lay beyond the realm of the Deep. But she had always been known as the troublemaker - the one who loved to play tricks on the elders and was a common one to experience their wrath. It was why she was never destined to be chosen for the sacrifice. Which she had no problem. She was not perfection, not one who preened and primped themselves to be pretty to die.
As she thought about those who had died, she felt a strange bitter feeling sweep through her, straight to her core. It had never made sense to her. And when she had first experinced the round of sacrifice and the strange celebration that came as the chosen was taken to die. It was horrific.
She gnashed her teeth and felt herself grin. She was free! A little further! She kicked her fin and swam forward a few more feet. She was free of ever being a sacrifice to a horrifying dark creature! She swam forward again, a bubble spreading in her chest. Was it satisfaction? She couldn't quite say. It was unfamiliar.
Letting out a long breath which blew bubbles around her, she swam once more. Her fins flared and she swam as fast as she could go, the chill water streaming around her.
And then she felt it... a strange warm feeling. The water itself felt different. It was like liquid calm, pulling her in and telling her to dance.
She would! She would dance. And she did, her long frame spinning through the water.
This was worth it. Leaving the familiarity for the freshness of freedom.
She could get used to this!
She did not look back as she swam, instead she looked forward. And her eyes could make out a soft glimmer of the darkness lightening.
If she kept going... would she see the sun?

Charbydis had been raised as a warrior, a leader. It was part of the reason she couldn't believe she was doing this. She was leaving the village. But then, that's what she was doing wasn't it?
She was leading. She was showing the way. Because if a warrior couldn't show that there was bravery in going then how could anyone else? It wasn't just the monster of the deep that kept them their in their village, it was fear. Fear about what was out here in the great beyond.
They'd find the note she'd left and she hoped it would bring them courage.
I go to find a place for us, one where we can truly live. It is not fear that makes me leave, but courage. Staying would be giving in to my fear--to do the same things my mother and grandmother before me had done. It is time for change. Think me coward if you will, but I hope you follow this example. I leave to carve the way for us. I leave so that perhaps I can give someone else the courage to do the same.
Will you join me in the new world? I'll be waiting...

Sea Slug Mare! Username: Anderleit Familiar Preference List: Octopus, Koi Entry: Nicha thought that maybe she could have come to love the deep, given time. She could have found tranquility in the inky blackness and shining waters blue. Maybe she could even get over the thought of those who "disappeared", the way her mother and sister and brothers had. Must be something wrong with her, that she couldn't banish their father to mere memory quite so easily as the rest of the family.
Or maybe she knew the truth: that the dark below was tainted with blood. Dear old Dad had bought them this last era of peace, back when all Nicha could remember of him was a warm curl of tail and the vibrant color all but she lacked. Mom had nearly lost it when she pierced her nose, just like his had been. Said she reminded her of him, said she was bringing up the past.
What was so wrong with remembering, she wanted to know?
Did Mom know something she didn't? Something about the way her eyes rolled when Nicha brought up Dad...when she wore her jewelry with pride, and exulted in her brightness... Maybe Mom was setting her up. Maybe Mom had plans for the child who questioned the end of peace and the thing that took her mate away.
Maybe Mom had ways to make sure she never remembered.
But that just made the choice simple, right? Nicha huffed, a torrent of bubbles swimming before her eyes. Beyond them lie the unguarded blue. Adventure was out there. Life, and stories, and all the songs Dad would sing about as they lay down to sleep. Up there was a life that didn't smell like sacrifice.
The mare flicked her powerful tail. The choice was real easy, and she could probably come to love it up there, too.

Clownfish Stallion! Username: Niyaru Delacroix Familiar Preference List: Sunset Koi Entry: It was almost satisfying being so far away from the village and it would be so easy to swim to something new. Any normal day the watchers would be out and about making sure no one tried to leave "paradise." His greatest fear was realized yesterday and as it awoke, chaos ensued. For safety, protection and peace of min; the watchers left their respective posts. A sense of foreboding washed over him as he realized how rare and strange it was that there was absolutely no one to stop him. He wasn't sure if it was because of the unknown or if it was because of the thought to stay. He lingered on the outskirt of the village trying to decide what his best option would be; should he go and leave all he knows behind or take a risk and leave for something unknown.
His brilliant blue eyes looked back at the village as the memories of his childhood and his loved ones played in his mind. The loving memories were soon interrupted when the screech hit his ears. The sound bringing fear, unease and reluctance; his family would need him. But on the other hand, wouldn't the village need a survivor to tell their story so it never dies? Against better judgment he found himself going back for his family. In the back of his mind he knew they would not even entertain the idea of leaving. He had to try and save them from whatever was going to take place soon.
Was it not able to be satisfied by what little they could feed it or had its appetite grown for something more? He could feel it just as strong as the need to breathe. It was only a matter of time and he couldn't waste any more of it. Teagan found his sister and tried to portray how serious it was that they needed to leave. She just laughed in his face and told him to stop being so silly. His heart sank at her words as they echoed in his head. This was paradise to his family and they had no reason to suspect it would be anything but that. They didn't feel what he felt, they didn't feel the unease or fear when they heard it. It was all because of the watchers and village counsel. They were preaching that everything was fine and there was no reason to be afraid. Teagan knew better than to listen to them anymore because his life depended on it. He had no real evidence but he also had never felt this way in his time of living here.
Instead of trying to convince his parents they needed to leave "paradise," he decided there was no way they would take his word. He choked back tears as he swam away from home. When he hit the outskirts he continued to swim and didn't stop or look back, ready to take on the unknown and survive on his own.
