Ever couldn't help but grin at the sudden change that came over Melvin, the brightening of his voice and the lightening of his step. It was surprising, and surprisingly charming, as well. He shook his head just a little. "You want to see a movie? We try to do something like that, we'll end up having to figure out an overnight, probably..." But he didn't sound unwilling. Just cautious, considering, as he stretched out his legs to match Melvin's pace, to keep up with him. He looked out of place in a mall, in his thrifted clothing and his battered old messenger bag. And, maybe, the place left Ever a bit shellshocked. Thoughtlessly, he eased in a step closer to Melvin, so that their arms just lightly brushed. "It's doable, though."

"You sound older than me just by staying up a little, but hotel's are doable. I sleep in plenty." Though they were usually with Lawr in high rises or minimalist suites. The occasional cabin did happen or quaint bed and breakfast given if they had all the amenities.
"A do want to at least have dinner." He pointed out, not missing out on decent food for once.
Moving to the Information Board located in the mall, he glanced up and then around before he suddenly noticed decorations. "Thanksgiving will be coming up....then Christmas." He would need to buy gifts eventually......would he even know where to go for the holidays? Was he still invited now?
He tried not to think about it.
Not actually touching the board but letting a finger hover over the directory, he spotted the furniture stores.
"We can try this furniture place here. I got a end table there once already and it has decent variety." He paused when he looked over at Ever and noticed how he looked around and was much closer than he was before. It was peculiar to think that, just maybe, Ever didn't like crowds. The man was often confident and cocky around him, but then he remembered that Deus was confined, small, and often didn't have much in the way of foot traffic.
"We should....probably stick close so we don't loose each other." He suggested.

"If we get lost, meet back at the portals, I guess..." But he sounded hesitant about it, turning his head to look back over his shoulder as they passed a security guard. The gesture, of course, made Ever look more conspicuous, probably the opposite of what he wanted. "Maybe we can start with the mattress? And bed, I guess, if we need? And then move onto the other stuff, since that's why we're here."

Ever seemed distracted, and he watched him before he turned his head to see the security guard, not helping the suspicion at all. When he caught sight of the guard looking back, Melvin turned away before looping his arms around Ever's and leading him. "You're distracted." He stated.
He moved down the Mall and up a wide escalator before they arrived at a mattress store that had a full lineup of beds on display in various sizes and companies. Stepping in, he looked around before walking through the store with him, slowly releasing his hold of his arm. "You can lay on any one of these to see which one you like."

Ever let Melvin guide him along, looking him over in a sideways manner -- and, frankly, being with him made Ever relax a little. Even in civilian clothes, Melvin looked like the kind of grade A nerd who would never be picked out of a line up or suspected of illegal behavior. Whether or not the assessment was true -- well, that didn't matter. He looked respectable. He gave Ever an edge of something respectable. Next to a bed, he shook his head just a bit -- reached out to press his hand against the mattress -- and then made a little sound. "Really?" Even as he was asking, he sank down to sit, anyway. sneaking a stealthy look sideways to make sure he wasn't about to get in trouble. "They're okay with that?"

Melvin moved to the other side and sat before throwing his legs up to lay there. "You don't buy a car without driving it. Same for mattresses. They encourage it because they want to sell you something. You need to see if it's good against your back." He turned his head to look at ever and patted the spot next to him. "Lay down."

Still, for a moment, he hesitated -- trying to decide if he should take off his boots or not first. But Melvin had left his shoes on, so Ever did the same. He swung his legs up and sprawled on his back, bag settled on his stomach and hair squashed against the mattress. He hummed, just a little. "Seems a bit soft, maybe? I don't know..."

He watched him a moment. "Do you like a firm or soft bed? They also sell ones that adjust but they are pretty pricey." He admitted, and wondered how he could make him feel more comfortable.
"How do you and Zeke usually sleep in your bed?"

"Uh." There was a moment, a pause, something faintly amused. Ever tipped his head just a little bit to look at Melvin, instead, both of his eyebrows raised. "He doesn't actually sleep in my bed all that often. Couple nights a week, maybe. So it's about me, but I don't really know what I like; I never knew there were options, before?"

Melvin smiled at that. Couple nights a week. Lucky b*****d.
"Don't see why he is complaining about beds then when he isn't even staying long enough to sleep with you." He reached out and patted his shoulder. "Come on. Let's try another bed that's firmer ad see if that is more up your alley. We can start getting an idea where you fall into with beds."
He rose up and looked around a few beds, checking the little display stand in front of each one that said the manufacturer and the type of features.
"This one looks firmer."
Further off a sale's person was watching them but hadn't approached, allowing them to look around as they themselves spoke with a older couple.
As Melvin laid down, patting the side for Ever to come meet him, he waited till he was settled beside him before asking. "Why doesn't Zeke stay the night?"

"I dunno. We've both got work and stuff, different schedules, we meet up when we meet up..." Ever waved it off, unconcerned, sprawled out on the bed. This time he hook his bag off, stretched out a bit, testing out the feel of the bed. He still didn't really know what he wanted, but maybe this felt better. He lingered, anyway. "I never thought about it. I don't mind sleeping alone." After a breath, he made a sound, thinking. "Could I get a headboard, too, maybe? Something sturdy..."

"I don't see why you can't get a headboard." He said, looking up as they laid there.
"Do most people you hook up just wham bam and leave? Seems a bit impersonal." He said, not that he was talking from experience aside from Nash and a handful of college girls. "The wind-down is just as enjoyable sometimes." He often enjoyed just taking in the other person and resting, talking, and embracing their presence.
Lifting his head up just a little, he glanced to see that the worker was occupied and looked over at Ever. Maybe you need to test how much it bounces too if that is a concern for you." He said with a smile.

It was a hint, but Ever missed it; musing over 'wham bam thank you ma'am' versus the benefits of curling up together after. It made his expression thoughtful as he bounced just a bit on the bed. Distracted. Melvin was going to have to try harder. "...honestly, I don't...mind having some alone time. I spent so much of my life just taking care of myself..." Slowly, his eyes came back into focus on Melvin, and he raised both eyebrows. "It never bothered me, to be left alone. Though it's nice to have another person too, I guess?"

The bed barely moved on his side due to Ever's bounce test, and he smirked at his distracted small jostling to see how the shocks worked. Nothing high powered but they got the idea.
"I always had people around me. Siblings. Family. People I called friends. When I came here, I was rather okay with being by myself. It felt like one dorm room to another. Not so much anymore. I suppose you don't miss sleeping a certain way or having something until it's gone." He rose up on his elbows and patted the bed.
"Let's try another one."
He got up, running a hand through his hair at that thought before moving to the net bed over. This one was less firm, softer than the other two and was half the size of the other one - most likely due to a floor model. It always felt like a Three Little Bears game testing mattresses.
He laid down and patted the bed for Ever to come over, but not outwardly, but with his arm laid out for him to settle beside him.
"Have you ever had a long relationship before? Not the ones made up of benefits and quickies. Ones with dating."

"I dunno." It came out hesitant, though; a lie, probably, as Ever flopped down next to Melvin. He looked unconcerned, frowning just a tiny bit at the feel of the bed, and after that moment he shook his head and admitted: "No, not really. But I also never much stayed in the same place for long, not since I left home." He licked his lips, crossing his legs at the ankle. "I had siblings, then, but we were too different. Never really connected. I think maybe that kind of tie isn't meant for everyone..."
