"Making do is my at-home profession," she said, again with a bit of a laugh to play off the very true statement. It took a bit to keep up with the taller girl but she seemed to manage just fine; her breath might have been a bit short though, but a mini additional workout wasn't really a bad thing either. "Feels like home already."
Her expression sort flattened out at mention of her particular dorm. "Horrorland, pretty much. I have an accent wall that's makes the room kinda pop in that "trapped forever" kinda way. Someone scratched in five-point tallies on one wall, floor to ceiling, wall to wall. It's only been two days but I don't really wanna leave the room 'cause of that wall."
It was a pretty cool wall.

She nodded, a little grimly, at the comment about home profession. "I think it's one a lot of us have. Might be a few exceptions, but most of us... Yeah." She made an awkward shrug, and said "Better home then home was, if you ask me."
She blinked, curiously, at how the other girl seemed to LIKE the room with the tallies. "It doesn't bother you, being in the basement? I couldn't... wouldn't be ok with that, myself. And I hear there's a room with an honest to gods rack in it down there. My friend Kim told me it was hers before she moved in with her boyfriend, and just. A RACK. One that she said had been used." Her expression was horrified.

She didn't doubt it and just shrugged in agreement. It wasn't like she'd met a lot of people, but it was a fair assumption to have given that it didn't seem like the island was full of the most happy-go-lucky people in the world. Even from just an outside perspective, and the current weather didn't make things look any peppier either.
"A rack?" Gabby said as she made a face. "I'd mind that 'cause that's just gross and disturbing on a lot of levels. But my room?" She shrugged again. "It's not that bad. Bigger than my old room and all mine, so I can't complain."
She walked in silence for a little bit, a small miracle if Seren was ever needing to witness one, before turning to look at the other hunter. "So this rack. I mean...have you seen it? Should we go take a look?"

"Kim said it was what she had to use for her BED. I mean. Horrible. Just appalling." She shook her head, disgusted and appalled. "I don't know why this island would need such horrible things... Even if it's old as ********, they should get them out of the rooms and find somewhere appropriate to store them. Museum or some s**t."
It was pretty clear she was not fascinated by torture implements, and in fact wanted nothing to do with them. "Look...? I don't know who owns the room now, so I wouldn't know who to ask to begin with... And honestly, I'm not interested in seeing them. They sound... horrifying." And besides, things that were used to mutilate or scar people weren't her... goal.

The lack of interest in the thing was a bit of a downer, but Gabby tried not to let it show.
"Well, that's cool. I guess since I'm down there I can find out for myself. Ask around or something." It wasn't too hard a task for her to get into people's faces and ask random things, so provided she had someone to approach then she was good to go. She gave it a bit of thought and really had to agree though.
"As a bed is pretty messed up, though. If someone own's the room now, I hope they brought their own furniture. Or, I dunno, at least a good mattress."

Seren looked baffled. "How would someone bring a mattress or furniture? I mean, we're all given a single suitcase... I think?" She paused, then said darkly "If not, that's way not fair. Of course, special privilege exists the world over so I wouldn't be surprised." Her eyes were narrowed in annoyance as she thought about that, then she sighed. Deeply.
"I hope you find out. Might be some other s**t down there, too, dunno. I know that Kim said the showers down there are a horror show of their own. I'd suggest using the ones upstairs, from the way she made it sound. I'm grateful to have gotten a first floor room. It's comparatively normal?" She sounded unsure, as if she had trouble actually trusting that.

Gabby shrugged at the question about mattresses and furniture. "IKEA flatpacks everything so maybe you can bring back some from leave? That's only for furniture though, I guess. I dunno. If we're stuck with whatever mattresses they give us here then I'm probably gonna have a messed up back soon. Maybe I should just sleep on the floor..."
She thought on that a moment before talk of this "rack" came up again. "Ooh! Other stuff and someone named Kim, huh? Maybe I should hunt them down and ask! D'you think they'd mind? And also I haven't seen the first floor rooms, but if the bathrooms are nicer then they're probably better. That's kind how it works on cruises, too. The higher the deck, the better the facilities." The girl shrugged again.
"Moving up in some ways, and back down in others. That's life, for you."

"There wasn't an Ikea near me, so I never have been to one. Good to know about the flat pack. And I bet if you got some help from a friend, you might be able to manhandle a mattress through somehow. Or... I dunno, the supplies have to get here, don't they? Maybe there's a way to arrange with the Supply Office to have something you ordered online delivered through their arrangements. If so, that would be nice, in the future." She kind of shrugged a little. "Haven't had a chance at leave, yet, given how new I am, but that's ok. Life here is waaaaaaaay less busy then home was."
She listened to the other girl, her brows raised, then nodded. "Kim's still in the basement, but like I said... with her boyfriend. She's nice, he seems to be too, so I think they should be able to help you." She shrugged about the comment regarding cruises. "I guess that makes sense, though I've never been on, or near, a cruise ship. They don't exactly come into the Valley, after all." She made that last comment in a joking, ridiculous tone.

She wrinkled her nose at the boyfriend comment.
"Maybe I should knock rather than barge right in, then," said the girl as she skipped along to keep in step with Seren. "I've walked in on a lot of people doing things before. Like, things you can't unsee and unimagine kind of things. So this 'rack'..." she squinted, "...maybe I'll knock on that door, too." She said this as though she had no intention of ever knocking in the first place.
Which she didn't.
"Oh! Yeah, 'member that aunt I mentioned? She took us on one but we got put on the cruddy deck way down below while she got the grand stuff higher up. It was still fun, just something I noticed."

Seren blinked a little, and blanched at the idea of walking in on people doing things she didn't want to know about. She had a pretty wide idea of somethings, and wasn't bothered by many, but other things were not something she'd ever want to see. Also, there were people she just would never want to see having sex in any form, ever.
If she stumbled across Kim and Terry, though, she'd probably just be embarrassed at the awkwardness. They were both decent looking enough. However, Gabby probably wouldn't be so ok with it. "Ah yeah. It's probably good to knock first. Though sometimes she leaves the door open, so I suspect that's a time that'd be safe to approach."
"Oh? Well hey, at least it was FUN."

The idea of an open invitation to barge felt like a big score, and Gabby did a victory fist pump as soon as Seren said so. Her grin was probably bigger than it should have been considering the topic.
"It was fun. Something else you should put on your list for when you go on leave. The one we went to was to the Bahamas, so Florida for a day, then cruise, then back to Florida for another day before home. I hear the cruise to Alaska is really nice. I'm not really sure about any other ones though; those are the ones everyone in my family talks about 'cause we've been on one and know people that have been on the other."
She rattled on a little longer about what she'd heard about the Alaska cruise, and then looked over to see if she'd talked the poor girl to death yet. That always seemed to be the case if she kept on going and going and...going.

Seren blinked at the victory pump, unsure what that was about, and finding the grin mildly disturbing. That said, people here were weird, so she wasn't going to argue.
"I'll keep it in mind, if I should ever get enough leave days to do so. I mean, we get kinda limited leave I think?" She paused, thought it over, and shrugged. "Not totally sure, since I can't use it yet, so I didn't pay attention. I was more worried about getting myself fit and ready so that I don't get killed in the field."
She listened about the cruise information, nodding along politely. She didn't LOOK bored, at least not to some one who didn't know her at all. She was, however, bored inside at this point, not having a point of reference for much of what Gabby was saying.

Seren looked alright so Gabby rattled on about basically whatever else came to her until they finally made it back to the dorms.
"Well it was nice chatting with you!" she said as she started to head for the stairs. "If you want we can maybe go for a run or something sometime. Like I said, workout partners are always great."
The girl jokingly waggled her eyebrows when she said "workout partners" and then laughed her way down the stairs to her dorm to grab a change of clothes and a towel.
