"Huh. I'm not sure." Jordan considered it, shrugged. "Not a bad thing t be, I guess."
He consulted his own phone, then put a couple of phone numbers into October's. "They melt," he confirmed. "It's pretty grim. It's important to watch the timer, seriously."

"It's a very important thing," said October sagely. "Everyone needs a good cuddle every now and then."
He was still trying to figure out the melting thing, because that sounded terrible. "I can't believe they melt. Like the Wicked Witch of the West or whatever? They just...turn into a puddle, that is awful."
A look was given to the woehound, still moplike and drowsy.
"These are too cute to melt."

"That's true." Jordan nodded, and a small, pleased smile flickered briefly across his face, almost secretive.
"I've seen it. There was a mass escape a while back. They turn into a black sludge. It's absolutely horrifying. I'm extra careful about watching the clock when I walk them ever since. My favorite foxfires were lost in that incident," he sighed.

October looked quite pleased that someone agreed with him.
"I hope you're getting in good cuddle time," he said, and waggled his fingers at the woehound. It's tail gave a little halfhearted flop and October made a pleased noise, glancing around to see if there was more candy lying around somewhere he could use as a treat.
Jordan was given another horrified look.
"Wait, seriously? That's like something out of a terrible movie. Why do they melt?"

"Mhmm." Jordan sounded pleased with the fact. He retrieved the candy bag and gave October another one, not averse to spoiling minipets a little bit from time to time.
"As I understand it, they're made of Fear and abstract concepts, essentially. Like little daydreams given substance by Fear energies. They're not strong enough concepts to become the sentient creatures of Halloween, and when they're not in a Fear-rich environment their structure begins to break down due to that," Jordan explained.

"Good," said October, and meant it. He thought briefly of Melvin and his lack of willing cuddle partners and felt a little sad, though the offered candy from Jordan helped to focus more on what was right in front of him. He poked the candy through the bars and saw the creature stir, inching forward to nose at it.
The explanation was considered with a frown and then a slow nod. "Fascinating," October murmured, which wasn't sarcasm at all, but in fact entirely sincere. "I didn't realize there was so much attached to these things, but now I really want one."
He stroked the soft fur at the front of the woehound's head, what little he could reach of it.
"I've always wanted a dog, and this isn't quite the same, but it's close enough."

"You can volunteer to help catch specimens in Halloween," Jordan offered. "It's golem work, so it'd help you get used to using Halloween golems if you tried it. I've done that a few times." He resumed feeding the minipets in the tanks, working his way slowly down the row.
"It's not the same," he agreed, "but they're soft and cuddly and friendly. Some of them, anyway. Even if they are weird little Fear creatures."

October was frowning at the cage in front of him. "The golems? Do you mean those things that we put ourselves into in order to sneak back over to Halloween? I haven't done that yet."
He'd been on the island for several years now and still had accomplished, in all truthfulness, very little. Not that October particularly minded this. He poked at the woehound's nose, and it gave a little snuffle before scarfing up the rest of the candy still left.
"Some are bizarre," said October, "but some are pretty amazing. And they're like having a pet, right? It'd be nice to have someone - or something - in the room to talk to."

"Yeah. It's good to get used to the feeling of them, so that if you have a serious mission that involves them you can adjust quickly rather than getting distracted by the strangeness of a different body." Jordan fed a candy to each head of a cute puppy with three heads. It was probably only supposed to get one, but he didn't want the heads to fight one another over the food. "It's like having a pet," he agreed. "It's good to have something to take care of."

October considered this for a long moment. It looked like hard work, trying to think it over, his face screwed up in thought. "It sounds completely bizarre; but also kind of like those first person shooter games, like, where you just inhabit another body or something."
October eyed the three headed dog. "Can you have more than one, or is everyone just allowed to have one?"

"It's completely bizarre," Jordan nodded. "You get some latent instinctual impulses with the body. That can be weird. Or you might get a female one. Also weird. But you learn to adjust." "Hm. I haven't asked about more than one, so I don't know. There'd be an extra fee, I'm sure, and there must be some kind of limit, but I couldn't tell you from personal experience. I only have Tiny." The three headed dog got a scritch for each head before Jordan moved on.

October looked very concerned about latent instinctual impulses. "Wait, do you not get to choose what you become? It's just sort of a randomized thing?"
He shifted where he still sat, brows furrowing in contemplation. The idea of being able to have one or several pets was highly thrilling to him, especially if it meant having something else to cuddle up with at night. "Can I come see Tiny sometime? Or take her for a walk?"
He vaguely recalled a sort of offer being made but asking outright seemed a good thing to do.

"Unless you've got a long-term project that requires a consistent appearance, it's randomized," Jordan explained. "Not sure some joker in Life hasn't put a flag on my account, though. I get female golems a good eighty percent of the time. It's weird." "Absolutely. She loves attention," he said, and smiled fondly. "Just shoot me a text when you've got some free time."

"Oh," said October, frowning. "So I could end up as a three legged, one eyed banshee with purple hair and green snakes for eyes, hmm..."
He seemed to be mulling this over entirely too seriously, but a smile formed across October's face at the mention of getting to see Jordan's minipet. There weren't a whole lot of animals on the island, which made October's dog loving self rather sad.
"I'll definitely do that, then. Thanks, Jordan."

"A single snake, if it were one-eyed, I suppose," Jordan said solemnly. "The first golem I got was an undead with a detached head, which I then had to carry around under one arm for the rest of the mission. That took a little getting used to." He nodded, smiling gently, and moved on down the row, feeding each mini in turn and checking off his list. "No problem," he said. "Happy to indulge a fellow enthusiast."
