“I’m in no hurry, Evan. I like the relationship we have now, and I’m in no hurry to cause any damage to it.” Tobias’s voice was soft and he placed another more lingering kiss atop of Evan’s head and sighed. “You know, I won’t lie to you, I’d like to be more than we are, but I love what we are now. You’re a great cook, and a great friend, in all honesty, and you don’t give yourself credit, honestly…”
His voice trailed off, then took on a more annoyed sounding tone, though he hoped it sounded enough like the joke it was. “The one big fault I find in you, is the fault that you find in my fashion sense. I happen to think that this scarf really brings out my…hair. Besides. It holds it back quite well, thank you very much.”
Tobias tossed his head so the scarf fell over Evan’s face and grinned. “I am who I am. You know me. Or, you’re getting to know me. I’m not keeping anything from you. I think I’m pretty good at telling you what I want, I don’t want to be that guy who’s super sweet then demands a relationship out of it, I think I was quite clear from the beginning, that I’d like it someday. A romantic relationship, and you were quite clear that you’re not interested, and I’m fine with that. I like us where we are, but if it changed…”
He shrugged and continued walking, shifting Evan a little bit in his arms, trying to get a more secure hold on him. “I wouldn’t be opposed to it at all. I’m falling for you. Pretty damn hard. And that’s something I don’t really do often. You just keep surprising me, and I like it.”

Evan hummed thoughtfully; he didn’t draw away from the kiss. He was used to it; Cambria liked to do it. It made him think of when he was younger, when his mother would give him kisses, nice and sweet, and reassuring.
She’d stopped a long time ago, but he still missed them. He’d probably take them from anyone he could get if it filled that little hole in his heart.
His lip curled into a little smile when Tobias mentioned his fashion sense. It was cute, that he’d kept the sash. It wasn’t an ugly sash by any means, but Evan liked it because it meant something to Tobias. Somewhere, in the pit of his stomach, he wanted to tell him about Malus, but the thought was snuffed away quickly.
It was a secret, one of many, that he would keep buried for as long as he could.
“Well don’t fall so hard you can’t pick yourself up. I don’t know what’s gonna happen there. But I know that if I don’t ever date you—or if I, I don’t know, start dating Zac again, I don’t want you to be mad at me. I like you,” he sighed. “I think, maybe, you’re good for me. I mean, you got me to go out this late. And you help me taste my food. And you make me feel better about myself. And…no matter what happens, I don’t want to lose you. So…you promise that no matter what happens, you’ll stay my friend?”

Tobias grinned, glad that Evan couldn’t see his face and chuckled softly. “You have my word, Evan. Nothing, not a terrible breakup, not you dating Zac again, not Zac shooting me while I sleep could get me to stop being your friend. Not now, not ever. I swear it.” Honestly, Tobias was a little surprised by how much truth those words held. He didn’t want to lose Evan…and even if he didn’t get what he wanted out of all of this…he still did really want their friendship.
Badly.
He idly wondered when this had stopped being such a game and had started morphing into something real, and he wondered when he stopped caring that it had.
“I think you’re pretty good for me too, Evan. I’ve always been pretty full of myself, not going to lie about that, but I’ve never had such a big hero complex before. You make me feel quite strong, and I like that. A lot. So, thank you.” It didn’t matter how long it would take.
He would and could wait. Perhaps Evan really was the one who was worth waiting for.

Evan couldn’t help but laugh; he managed to close his eyes as he relaxed against him. “A hero complex? Sounds like you need a sandwich. I’m gonna put that on my menu, ‘The Hero Complex’, and it’s going to be the biggest, mightiest sandwich anyone’s ever had. The only thing that can fend off ‘even the most villainous hunger’.”
He seemed like he liked the idea, but food was always the way to put Evan in a better mood.
That, and not having to worry about losing one of his few friends.
He didn’t have many that were still around or talking to him after his ‘absence’, and Tobias was really one of his first new friends. It felt like a huge accomplishment, and he didn’t want to throw it away. Tobias made him feel normal.
Human.
He laughed quietly, to himself.
He was happy.
Even then idea of having someone spending the night wasn’t stressing him out.
Until he remembered that meant that Tobias was going to see him in the cat pajamas he’d just gotten.
The cat pajamas that matched Cambria’s exactly, except for the fact that Evan always wore a jacket with his.
And that he was going to see all the stuffed animals in his room, that was probably a mess anyway. Or that he was just generally probably going to make a fool of himself tonight.
But…
Tobias had probably come to expect that of him, so…
Maybe it wouldn’t be as bad as he kept telling himself.
