The stone began to glow, and with it Vanyel did as well. He grew taller, arms and legs longer and stronger. When it was over, he stared in astonishment at Riley, who was now just a little shorter than he was! "Wow Vanyel, you look so cool!" Riley exclaimed as he opened and closed his fingers. "Why don't you test it out?" Vanyel stepped back, experimenting with swinging his arms through the air. When a wild pokemon appeared, she decided to fight it.

Fighting felt...awkward. Was this how it was supposed to feel? Vanyel had won, yes, but only because he was at a much higher level. His legs felt too thick, and his body wanted to root itself when as a kirlia he may have leaped away. He did enjoy swinging his arms, but he found it was difficult to concentrate his power in his hands- instead it traveled easily to the blades on the forearms, which would glow with power. No matter which way he fought, those arms just felt wrong somehow.

Despite his reservations, Vanyel did feel powerful. He could jump much higher, and his arms scythed through the air with speed. He was like a gangly teenager, compared to his grace as a kirlia. He set himself a goal, determined to make it work. Fighting more of the pokemon who were attracted by Riley's incense was key. He was sure that the more he moved the more used to his new body he would become.

After taking out yet another pokemon, Vanyel happened to glance towards Mochi...and saw Seul by her side. At some point he had been let out, which meant he must have seen... Suddenly embarrassed, he looked away. He wondered what Seul thought of his choice, then with a start realized that though Seul had been nearby he hadn't picked up on it.

Vanyel quickly checked his psychic link, and only relaxed when he was able to find the familiar presence of Seul's mind nearby. He had been so worried his evolution had somehow broken the bond. Yet, even as he found the link he found it weaker. As he searched, he was surprised to find another thread in his mind.

When Vanyel followed the second thread, he was astounded to find that it connected to Riley. And then he saw more, tenuous strings of psychic thought, roping out to the other pokemon. He had connected to them without knowing. He shook with the realization, not sure how it made him feel. He felt the loss of his connection with Seul, but that empty space was quickly filled with the bonds that grew stronger once he'd noticed them.

Vanyel shook his head. Those other connections felt nice, yes, but he also felt it was important to him to have just one or two that were stronger. He focused, making sure that his connection to Seul would remain strong. Some of it leaked off onto Riley's connection, which he found surprising. With curiosity, Vanyel paused to consider his feelings when he thought of his trainer. He no longer found her frightening, and in truth he thought of her as a safe place in the terrifying mass that was this world. He wasn't sure when he'd started to think of her that way, but he did realize with a start that although Riley had kept Seul away so he made his decision to evolve on his own, he had been influenced... by her. He had chosen to evolve, in small part, to make her... happy.

It was a strange thing, knowing that he had grown close to a human. As he fought Vanyel's eyes with linger in her direction. But he sensed nothing different about her and guessed that she had no idea about the revelations he'd just had. He smiled to himself as he spun through the grass, thinking of how startled she would be if he spoke to her the way he did Seul. He had never conceived of connecting psychically with anyone but Seul; now, the thought wasn't all that unwelcome.

Riley leaned back into the tree; there were no new wild pokemon. She took the moment to watch Seul and Mochi, who were still wandering around beneath the trees. A flurry of movement earlier she'd seen from the corner of her eye told her they had been playing before. Now they walked calmly, and though she couldn't see their faces she imagined them chatting. Riley noticed she could smell the bark of the tree and realized her incense had run out. She pulled out the next one and lit it. Vanyel didn't seem to notice the change in the pokemon he was facing.

Riley pulled open her pokedex as the smell of the new incense filled the air. This time it was a bit sharper. She pushed her whole bag a little farther away before she sneezed from it. Then she double-checked everything she had caught, trying to make sure she'd gotten every pokemon on the list. Vanyel could take care of himself, so she felt confident putting most of her attention to the task.

Riley wondered idly, as she confirmed what she had caught already, how she was going to go about catching all these pokemon's evolutions. She knew from her own pokemon that evolving pokemon she had already caught would register them in her pokedex. But all of these pokemon drawn by the incense were relatively weak and would need a lot of training to evolve. Some evolutions she could hunt down in the wild, but she realized a little ruefully that some of these pokemon she'd likely be catching again in their natural habitats so that they would be nearer evolution.

After Riley caught another pokemon, she started thinking through another idea of hers- what about pokemon that evolved through different methods? Things like friendship, trading, and evolution stones... Well, that actually wasn't a big deal. She could just wait until she got a pokemon and then, if she didn't already have what she needed to evolve it, just keep an eye out. Finding and using items seemed a little easier to her than training all of the pokemon herself.

Just like becoming strong enough to get Noel and Nima back had been measured by the gyms she defeated, she could break this up too. Riley suddenly felt buoyed on positive emotions. It felt good to have a clear goal again, probably the clearest she'd had in a long time. And it was a lot less stressful than anything she'd dealt with in the past...that was for sure. Riley began by briefly swapping over her pokedex to the mode that showed her Sinnoh pokemon.
