If Terry had been more familiar or comfortable around Zane, he might have let his head rest atop the surface in relief. He wasn't sure how many more puns he had in him and his opponent slash co-player choosing not to continue was an out that saved both their honors.
What honor is there in this sort of plaything? Agata giggled as Terry began his turn for round two.

He had to be more careful about which pieces he chose to pull out now. The tower was still pretty stable, but it could go from okay to bad pretty quick if he didn't concentrate. Terry seemed like an okay dude, but Zane was competitive when the opportunity arose and he felt like he could come out on top without having to try super hard.
He also felt a little weird about the now present lapse in conversation.

It was with a definite look of concentration on Terry's face as he pulled the second tile for the round. There didn't seem to be any wobble or unsteadiness as he placed the tile atop the tower. Satisfied, he looked up at Zane to answer him.
"What month is it now?" he murmured, "Less than a year, but all those Sahara missions make it feel like I've been here a century." He meant it, as he sounded almost tired by this mission. "You?"Status Round: 2Pieces Taken: 2 Total Points: 11

Three pieces down and two more to go for the round. He was feeling pretty good, an edge of cockiness threatening to get the better of him.
<Careful Zane. Don't get ahead of yourself.> Lerna chided and he sighed in response. His weapon was always scolding him.

Terry gave Zane a more scrutinizing stare. It wasn't one that sized the other hunter up but the Life trainee was definitely studying him. "How did you manage that?" he asked, it wasn't mean to be a judging question, flat as the tone was, "If it's not the Sahara, it's strange other lives creeping up on me."

Zane didn't have an answer for Terry, because he wasn't sure how he had managed to do it himself. Maybe he was good at avoiding things or talking his way out of the trouble.
Or maybe he hadn't been paying enough attention.
"Been doing other stuff, y'know?" He offered, answer non-committal. "I mean, there's always something to do here, even if you don't wanna."

Terry considered the very likely possibility that he was simply being offered up on account of him being a trainee. People on the bottom rung of the ladder hierarchy get fed to the wolves, if the media he'd consumed growing up could be truly trusted.
"Perhaps I should take lessons from you." Was the end result of his musings. "I wouldn't want to stay idle but it would be appreciated if giant malevolent insects aren't always trying to eat me."

"Nah, don't have any secrets to learn," Zane replied, doing his best to keep from showing that he was mildly uncomfortable with the conversation thread. It was his fault, after all, for admitting that he hadn't been present for one of the larger missions.
"Prolly was just one of those not at the wrong place at the right time sort of things." He shrugged, tugging another tile out. "Sure I'll get swept up in all the crap soon enough."

As the fifth tile for the round was placed, the tower wobbled and Terry held his breath. When it stopped and didn't topple, Terry carefully turned away to let out a breath of relief.

They were moving onto round three and their tower was looking well...unstable if Zane was going to be honest about it. He had really hoped that his tile choices would have had T-man sending the whole tower of blocks tumbling but he wasn't that lucky.
<You appear evenly matched,> Lerna felt the need to point out and he rolled his eyes, a mental hush pinged right back at her.
"But I mean, we signed up for this didn't we?" He could have said no, but he said yes because he was cool like that and totally equipped for the work Deus required of him. (Not.)

The tower was practice for rune writing, which would require dexterity, precision, awesome leet skillz to successfully pull off the next tile placement.
Unfortunately, Terry's opinion of himself led him to believe that this was all dumb luck on his part. Either that or "You're not secretly some sort of architect before you signed up did you?" As the structure became less and less stable, Zane took more care with which tiles he pulled and how gently he placed them. At some point, they were going to have to test the structural integrity of what remained and he didn't think he was ready for that.
Ah, well, it was still a challenge he planned to win.
"Yeah man, it's like a secret talent of mine that I only whip out for Jenga." He said completely deadpan, orangeish-red brow arching like really?
"Maybe I'm just good at finding the right spots to push." That sounded more like an innuendo than he intended. Oh well.

The Life trainee shrugged, murmuring "Stranger things have happened. Stranger lives have been lived." His grasp of the tile was gentle, and the way he lowered his second tile for the round was almost reverent. Did he murmur a prayer beneath his breath? T-man had a point about stranger things happening. "Well, we basically live the definition of stranger things now don't we?" That was part of what signing up as a hunter meant. Or what he understood anyway.
"At least this is a strange thing we can control." He shrugged, pushing his glasses up so that they stayed put when he leaned forward.

Terry tried to fit himself to the nickname of T-Man but all that kept coming up was a blank. "Not much to tell. Worked in a dead end job. Lived with my parents. I paid rent but," he shrugged, letting the sentiment of feeling like a failure go unsaid. "Life got better. But the Sahara can go drown."
