"Guilty until proven innocent? Good." Owen didn't intend to say good out loud but he had and little could be done about it now. That kind of backwards logic was difficult to work around and he had a feeling that things would only become more backwards in this place as he finally realized what it was. What the theme of this illusion was. It irritated him. Alice in Wonderland. Alice. If Fraus had not been killed Owen would have suspected his work. Owen returned to his cot and sat down to await the knights return as he tried to figure out what he could do. His memory told him he had in fact stolen them so he would have to lie and do it well. Or at least he would have to take advantage of the fact that someone was guilty until proven innocent. He could accuse anyone and if they did not have an immediate alibis it would buy him time.

“Aethon then.” Andrea answered shortly while wondering why this illusion was insistent on a name. hopefully that would be enough to satisfy him. She just wanted out of this acid trip and playing along seemed the only way to move forward.

Ultimately, the guards left him in his cell. He wouldn’t be clueless to why he was kept idle, however; a puddle on the ground that a guard stepped in on his way out splattered conveniently into a message that, should the light have reflected on properly from the right viewpoint, would say, “Error, please try again later.” It seemed that, as penalty for his incorrect choice earlier on, he would have to wait until his companion got far enough before he could progress, instead left in a helpless waiting situation until then. It seemed to mock him, however, as he would find the puddle itself reflecting him with a beard and long hair, accompanied with a sudden feeling of hunger, thirst, and fatigue, like he’d been in there for longer than he knew.

Meanwhile at the Mad Tea Party, directions were due. “He went that way,” said the Mad Hatter, pointing plainly at a trail that suddenly became clearer, depicting a road to a castle far along in the distance, with an odd design based on the hearts of cards. While the world was odd and somewhat mocking, there didn’t seem to be anything quite threatening yet, no encounter that really called for intense alarm; the sound of a monster behind was gone.

Andrea turned in the direction the man pointed and watched a path appear before her very eyes, leading all the way to a strange sort of castle. It seemed once again playing along and following directions had led to the path forward….where that path was taking her and if it was somewhere she wanted to go was another question entirely. “Thank you for your help.” She told the man, before heading down the path to see what this acid trip had in store for her next.

When “Alice” arrived at the large castle, the guards peered down from her at the drawbridge. It was difficult to say how she ended up at the drawbridge in particular; the things she was seeing weren’t exactly in her control. However, the rabbit was seen crossing the drawbridge moments before it was lifted. As soon as she neared, one of two guards spoke. “Are you here to advise the queen for the execution?” asked the guard. “If not, be on your way,” he stated sternly.

“I am the Queen’s advisor.” Andrea called up to the guards without hesitation. She could only hope the real advisor didn’t show up, or that she didn’t end up on the execution block herself for the lie, but the answer she was meant to give was clear. Follow the rabbit, the rabbit was inside and in order to get in she need play along. Then again, in this twisted acid trip forced upon her, perhaps she really was the advisor and she wasn’t lying at all.

The guard seemed unconvinced. “Are you sure? You don’t look like an advisor.”

However, another guard quickly interrupted. “What does an advisor look like?”

“I haven’t the slightest idea.”

“What does she look like then, if she isn’t the advisor?”

“I haven’t the slightest idea,”
he repeated.

“She must be the advisor then.” It didn’t quite seem to make sense, but enough so to convince the other. With their banter concluded, they tapped their pikes on the ground in unison and the gates swung open, opening the way for a wide courtyard with luscious red, black, and white coloring, from the fountains, to the benches, to the thick rose bushes. The White Rabbit peered around a rose bush, only its head around as she gazed at “Alice” blankly for a few moments and disappeared behind it.

If “Alice” were to approach the Rabbit’s previous location, she’d find a path leading towards an audience, all of whom were seated and gazing at her, intense stares from frighteningly empty eyes. Nearly everyone had these eyes, which was especially true for the executioner, whose eyes could be seen through the menacing vestige covering his face, axe in hand and ready to descend on woeful victims. “Justice is blind,” read a message in the dirt before her, though if she blinked the message would disappear. The one exception was the Red Queen. Her face was square-shaped, but it did not subtract from her..murderous beauty. Her eyes were lively, but her gaze suggested she was looking to see someone’s head parted from their necks, but at least she looked delightful in her red dress. Death was sport, death was kind. Looks could kill, and she divine.

When she turned her head (much later than her audience), her cold blue eyes all but vanquished the sun, and she said firmly, “You are the Advisor, and I the Queen. Advise me now,” she looked at the guards. “Prepare the scene.” It was odd really. From the beginning of her quest, she’d diverged further and further from who she was, at least in terms of who precisely she met and who told her who she was.

Beneath in the dungeons, the guards brought forth the two prisoners, the stranger of whom spared few words with Owen, and Owen himself. Both were bound by chains and forced on their knees before the Queen’s Court. “Behold the Duchess and the Knave of Hearts. He who steals tarts and she who eats them. Who to live and who to die? One hello, the other goodbye,” said the Queen, looking to the Advisor.

The guards argument made a strange sort of sense to Andrea, but then she was mostly just happy they finally let her pass so she could continue to follow the rabbit. The Audiences collective empty gaze was slightly disconcerting. By comparison the Queen's was almost comforting.

Well at least she had found Owen at last. Maybe it was Sam's mind link, why the hell hadn't he figured out something was wrong yet and come to get them with Katrina, but Andrea was oddly certain this wasn't another illusion like everything else. Whoever was playing with them had finally arrived at their point, but she had a feeling the answer she was about to give wasn't the expected one. Andrea didn't hesitate in giving it. “If he hadn't stolen the tarts, she wouldn't have eaten them. Off with his head, if a head must be removed, but this humble Advisor has a third option for your Divine Grace. Set them both to work to bake you a thousand times what they stole.” Perhaps they argued over whether the Horsemen should kill or not, but they all agreed to save a civilian at the cost of their own. Soon the Horsemen would be back down to one, unless the Queen took her alternative option or they could somehow communicate to Sam to remove the link.

Suddenly, their adversary—or “host” as he thought himself—appeared from thin air, standing a couple feet from them, twirling his cane for a moment before bringing it to a stop. “Well done, my friends. I was wondering when someone would figure it out, but they just kept picking each other off.” In short, none of the previous “contenders” were clever enough to realize they were in a position to provide an alternative, and instead were responsible for the execution of their predecessors.

And so, what was right was what remained, and what remained was an illusion. After determining her own solution than those presented, the illusory world around them faded before their eyes (clothes and bindings alike), leaving things as the warehouse they expected, and an officer (the female stranger from before) bound to a chair. However, the true horror came in the direction where an audience once stood, the same expressionless audience that observed the false execution. It seemed the audience was composed of the dead would-be saviors, lifeless cadavers faced in their direction.

Owen was glad to hear the decision Andrea had made before she continued to speak words that would ultimately free them. The job was life and death, everyone knew that when they joined. You were always to protect the people even if it cost you. Then their world began to blur and fade around them until they were alone in the warehouse again. He saw the cadavers and grimaced slightly. It felt so real but he had known otherwise. They made a mistake here that they could not risk repeating. "Aethon are you okay?" Owen asked as he made his way to the officer. He would have gone to Andrea but they did need to get the officer out first. Who knew when the game really ended?

“Yeah....fine.” Aethon answered Owen offhandedly. Her eyes fell on the crowd of corpses. "Now that's messed up. If there was ever a case to kill a guy..." Andrea left the rest unsaid in her on going argument with Owen. If she had just gone for the kill with the Waxman instead of trying to take him alive none of what had happened to her would have happened. Kat had healed most of the damage, save for the knife wound on her left shoulder which had now scared over. A daily reminder. There was something else Kat couldn't heal. The mental scaring. She glanced around the room full of props and special effects equipment that had suddenly revealed itself, while Owen attended to the officer tied to the chair. There was something missing though. While the whole thing had been far to fantastical to really believe, it had looked real. Far to real for just stage props and special effects. "Soooo.....that was a thing that happened."

Few more than three seconds passed before Sam teleported into the room. "I told Minerva so I assume she is on the way." He reported briefly before continuing "Everything got fuzzy so I cut the link and then I came over. What happened?" Sam looked at the dead but seemed somewhat unfazed by it. He was like Andrea and had advocated for simply killing criminals but had agreed to Owen's non-lethal policies. He had killed plenty.

"We were drugged." Owen reported as he cut the officer's bindings. "Get this woman to the hospital and then get back to the Stable. We need to adapt. This can not happen again." Owen rattled off the orders quickly and helped the officer over to Sam who took her hand. The two vanished leaving Owen and Andrea alone with the dead. "Fraust used illusions. He wasn't the only one but he has been the most potent. I never once felt sick after his illusions ended. I feel groggy and tired now. My lungs hurt so I breathed something in. We need to put filters in your masks and I need to repair mine." Owen had forgotten that his primary mask was broken by Priest. This mask had not been as outfitted. Actually he may have lost another mask in the time between those events... it was hard to remember for Owen. He had more reasons to believe that had been drugged but he didn't feel a need to rattle them off. Now he was thinking about the villains he knew who used drugs and would play games like this. It was too difficult to come up with any names in his present state so he tabled it for later when he had access to the Stable's database. "I'll make an anonymous call to the SIA and get them down here to clean up when we get back to the Stable."

“Aye aye captain.” Andrea gave a mock salute, her voice dripping with sarcasm, before she turn on her heel and strode towards the exit. The Horsemen were supposed to be a team, but Owen had seemed to decide he was the leader and could just order the other three about as he pleased. If it had been up to Andrea they have run some kind of actual test on the air and investigated the building to find out what exactly they were dealing. “You know buddy is still probably watching and knows your plan now.” She called over her shoulder. “Also different kinds of gas require different filters, so you might want to consider figuring out what he actually used.” She shouldn't have said anything, Andrea thought sullenly. Just blindly follow Owen's orders and let the mission fail when he picked the wrong kind of filter to put in their masks. She should start her own Horsemen where they were actually a team and not Owen and Friends. She had chosen her words carefully. 'Your plan.' 'You should consider.' Because Owen sure didn't treat her like an equal, just someone he could boss around. Not even so much as a thank you for saving his a**. Deep down she knew she would do neither of those things though.

Katrina paused slightly as Andrea stalked passed her, glancing back to watch the younger woman head towards the entrance for a second, before continuing her way over to Owen. “Nergal said you might need to be healed?” She asked somewhat cautiously. Andrea had seemed fine physically, if rather upset. It wasn't exactly the time or place to discuss it, but it didn't mean she wasn't concerned.

Owen did a very noticeable double take when Andrea opened her mouth and said the words she did. It took everything he had not to paralyze her and hold her accountable for what she had said. He was forced to remind himself that she was a child at this. She quite literally berated Owen for saying his plan out loud because they could have been eaves dropped on before she proceeded to lay out her plan. She had been like this for a while now but it was going too far. He knew what he needed to do and he was moments from doing it when Katrina showed up and asked if he needed healing. "I'm fine. We were drugged but the effects are wearing off." He didn't say that they had because he still felt it in his system. In his blood. His plan was to synthesize an antidote to the toxin by taking samples of his blood and testing them while the drug was still in his system. He hadn't said that out loud because he was hoping that if they were being watched the villain in the wings would focus on getting through their filters. "We may have a different issue. I'm benching Aethon for our next mission. She seems to have an issue with authority and in the field that could get us killed. Thoughts?" As soon as he finished speaking Sam reappeared. "The doctors are doing what they can to help the officer. She will be alright." Owen nodded to thank Sam for his effort.

Minerva✬The Doctor

Katrina was honestly caught of guard by the statement. Owen and Andrea had been having problems since she had joined the team. The divide had slowly been growing worse as time went on, and while Kat had done her best not to get involved with it, it was difficult to avoid on the small four person team who spent almost all of their time together. Still benching Andrea seemed like an extreme step which would only make the situation infinity worse. “I don't think it's an issue with authority.” She began cautiously. Hopefully Owen would catch the implication that it was a more personal issue. “I think it would be better if you sat down and talked to her about what really has her upset. Really listen to her and be patient if she's rude or sarcastic about it. Remember she's young. I doubt everything you did at that age was entirely rational and mature, especially when hurt.” Of course Katrina had never been young so she had no personal experiences to draw from, but it didn't mean she couldn't empathize. There seemed to be some level of fault on both sides, but Owen was the adult and if he wanted this team to work he was going to have to step up.
