"Uh, how would that be any different than if you were a Dark Mirror Senshi? We have powers, too. Albeit some are better than others, but I doubt our abilities would differ between our courts." He examined one of his copper bracers. "And if you wanted to protect people with them, no one would be opposed. It's not like Dark Mirror abilities are any less effective against the Negaverse than yours are." The redhead planted his hands on his hips and cast Puck a mockingly pitying smile. "If those are the only reasons you have, it sounds to me like you're just with the White Moon because you don't know any better." With a deep sigh, he shrugged his shoulders with extended arms. "You poor, ignorant soul. Allow me to enlighten you." Sinope bowed dramatically as if he were on stage before launching into a tale. "I take it you know the Catholic story about the war in heaven with the angels that sided with either Lucifer or God, right? Well there's more to the story than just that.
"There's a version that says there were angels on the sidelines who decided not to take part in the war. Instead, they wanted to wait it out so they could rally around the victor once it was over. When God won, the winners got to remain in heaven as angels while the losers - those with Lucifer - were kicked out of heaven and fell all the way down to hell where they became demons. The angels who didn't take part were found out and also given a punishment. They too were cast from heaven, but they were said to not have fallen as far as those with Lucifer since their sins weren't enough to weigh them down to hell. Instead, they merely fell to earth and became fairies." Sinope raised his chin as he proclaimed, "That is why angels are moral, demons are immoral, and fairies are amoral. Fairies are said not to have a conscience, so they don't know the difference between right and wrong. That's why in tales about fairies, they're just selfish and simply do whatever they please, whether it helps or harms others. Thus they're known for both helping as well as harming and no one really knows whether or not to trust them because they don't know what to make of them. Sound familiar?" He smirked at Puck meaningfully.
"Such is the nature of amoral beings - doing things according to their whims because they don't have concepts of what's good or bad. Humans don't consider themselves amoral because they fool themselves into thinking they have moral compasses, but in the end, they're just as selfish as fairies. If there really are such things as right or wrong, the lines are too blurred for people to be able to distinguish them. Anyone who thinks they have a clear concept of the difference is just being arrogant based on their own sense of values because anything can be turned on its head. Everything is subjective and all things can be seen from alternate perspectives." He held out his palms and stared at them seriously as if he were weighing justice itself. "What one person might call a good deed may be an unforgivable act to another. Likewise, what someone might do with honorable intentions might seem like nothing but evil to someone else. It's all a matter of perspective." Sinope tapped his temples.
Then he stretched his arms up skyward before folding them behind the back of his head. "I'm in the Dark Mirror Court for a bunch of reasons. It's a plus we can't be corrupted and we can't really be purified against our will. Mostly, though, it's because no one has any expectations of us, so we can act as selfishly or as selflessly as we like. No one expects us to conform to their idea of 'right' or 'wrong' and we don't have any real expectations of each other, so we pretty much do whatever we want with no reputation to concern ourselves with making or ruining because we're such a mystery. The royal who woke me, Remarque, seems to be biased towards the White Moon Court's cause, but from what I hear, he's got friends in the Negaverse, too.
"Since we all do our own thing, good luck trying to decide 'for sure' what we're on about. The other Dark Mirror you met - have you really only spoken to one other one? - must have been thinking along the same lines as that prince, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can give the lot of us a label of 'good guys' or 'trustworthy'." He gave Puck a sideways glance. "If you think about it, you can't even really expect every single person who calls themselves a White Moon Senshi to meet all your standards in those regards either, especially with how many of them there are. I'm sure there are those who play dirty or whom you would consider untrustworthy or do things you wouldn't approve of."
He chuckled softly. "It's ironic, but the Negaverse - the side of Chaos - has more organization and order to their methods and operation than the side of Order itself. They're more unified in their ways of doing things and that's why I think they have such an advantage over your court in this war. That's also why I think Remarque, as much as he would like to save Earth from the Negaverse's clutches, already considers the planet doomed and encourages us Dark Mirror Senshi to focus our efforts on gathering energy for exploring Mirrorspace - so we can find a replacement for the planet he expects you guys to lose to them."
The Dark Mirror Senshi shook his head pityingly. "The White Moon Court might think they're all 'moral' and doing the right thing, but can you really trust all your fellow court members to want the same things for the same reasons and thus work towards the same goal in the same manner with the same ideals? Even if you could, how would you know what you were doing is the right thing? You can never know for sure because you will never know the whole story from all possible perspectives. And even if we somehow could, who are we to judge which perspective is best to take?"
He reached out a hand to place on Puck's shoulder and looked him in the eye. "Puck, in the end, all we can do is what we want to do and accept it as our own, personal choice. Nothing more or less; not for a higher cause or duty or for anyone else's sake. Whatever you may think, you're not angels and the Negaverse aren't demons. Most of us are just humans with the base instinct of being selfish. You want to know what to trust? Trust that at their very weakest, animalistic state of mind, when forced into desperation, humans will always revert to selfishness. You'll never be let down." tatterpixie ((I am SO sorry he talks so much. OTL))

Puck stood in silence for a few moments after Sinope had finished his epic explanation, arms folded in front of him. He didn't even flinch when the Dark Mirror senshi put his hand on Puck's shoulder. He studied Sinope, brown eyes narrowed and brow furrowed, as he processed what he'd been told. And there was a lot to process. Finally he spoke, his voice steady and sincere. "That was quite possibly the best explanation of what the ******** is going on I have heard yet." The corner of his mouth turned up in a wry smile, and he chuckled softly. "An' you wanna know something else? I think if I'd have known about the Dark Mirror Court earlier, I might have considered joinin' your side. All that talk about moral, immoral, an' amoral… well, you can probably guess where I would fall, bein' a Puck an' all. I'd almost consider it now, you know… almost," he sighed. "I'm in the White Moon too deep at this point. I know we ain't angels, god knows I realize that. But I've made me bed, you know? I've made my choice. Best I can hope to do is not let s**t blind me to our flaws." Reaching out, he placed a hand on Sinope's shoulder in a mirror gesture of the Dark Mirror's. "I think I understand you lot now," he smiled. "You're not exactly allies, but you're not the enemy. You have your own agenda, an' sometimes it intersects with ours. An' right now I think my personal agenda is going to be takin' out the Negaverse. They're the real threat, not the Dark Mirror." The blond senshi tilted his head. "Tell you what. You watch my back, I'll watch yours. If one of the White Moon starts anything with you, I'll back you up. An' of course if the Negaverse starts anything, they're history." He grinned. "Us tricksters got to stick together, yeah?" Kitomyx Ahahah no worries! It's an excellent post! <3 Sorry I took so long replying to it!

The redhead blinked. "Wait, what? Really?" He didn't know what he'd expected - maybe a complaint that he'd been ranting or lecturing or talking nonsense - but a compliment? It took him entirely by surprise. He was so flabbergasted for a few minutes that his motor mouth couldn't even form words.
Sinope enjoyed explaining his reasons for being in his court to anyone who would hear him out (and even some who wouldn't), but he never actually expected anyone to actually listen and understand, much less agree. He even began to wonder if Puck was just pulling his leg before realizing the guy didn't really have a reason to. Unless he just wanted to see Sinope's bewildered face, in which case he had certainly succeeded.
Regardless, in spite of his best efforts, Sinope was actually...well, touched, for lack of a better term. Sure, he'd jokingly implied that Puck had picked the wrong court to join and maybe even playfully hinted that the White Moon Senshi might have been better suited to the Dark Mirror Court, but to hear the blonde say that he might actually have joined made a greater impact on the teen than he would have thought possible.
At last, after swallowing a few times to wet his dry throat, the younger sailor scout thought he could speak again. "Well, Puck may be a fairy and prone to mischief like the rest of them, but I think he's also one of the kinder ones, doing what he thought was right in the end."
He laughed; an embarrassed sound. "What was it he said...? 'Gentles, do not reprehend. If you pardon, we will mend.' He tried to fix everything that was messed up. Just like you seem to be doing as a White Moon Senshi." Hazel eyes looked away, still too anxious to meet dark brown. He wasn't used to praising anyone, even indirectly, but wasn't that what this was?
"I think..." he began, attempting to choose his words carefully - and this time not because he was in fear of his life. "I think being a Puck suits you better than you know. And maybe you're right where you belong after all."
An awkward, lopsided grin altered his countenance. "That kind of loyalty to your court...even someone like me who doesn't really believe too much in loyalty can see how it's admirable. And I mean, it's not like being with one faction or the other robs you of your ability to examine other perspectives as an individual. You definitely seem open-minded enough." He closed his eyes and nodded, as if confirming something silently to himself. "I think the White Moon is lucky to have you on their side."
The touch to his shoulder actually caused Sinope to flinch. He had been focusing on a point on the ground, but the gesture caused him to instinctively meet Puck's gaze. What was this feeling? Comradery? He was always so careful to keep people at arm's length and thought he'd grown used to it, but now for some reason he actually longed to call this person his friend and mean it. Tch...as if I know the first thing about being a real friend.
This wasn't fair. It'd been easier to deal with this guy when he'd been ready to beat him into the ground! At least then he wasn't in danger of wanting to get closer to someone he thought might have understood him. Sinope was rarely in such danger, though, because it happened so infrequently, so he hadn't thought to defend himself against it.
No, no; it's okay. You're in different factions. You probably won't ever see each other again after this and it's not like you could really be friends as civilians. Why did that thought make him sad? It shouldn't have. He'd lasted this long without friends; he could continue as things were. Right?
"Heh...yeah, that sounds about right," he concurred, nodding absently in response to Puck's summary of what he understood. But then the older sailor soldier suggested that they watch each other's backs.
The teenager thought he was going to explode from his inner conflict. Hadn't Puck just heard what he'd said about people being selfish? And yet here he was offering to back Sinope up if either the White Moon or Negaverse attacked him! Did he not get it? Sinope wasn't allowed to have friends! Friends meant attachments and attachments meant weakness. But what else could this be called?!
A mutual agreement, he concluded, amazed at his own ability to reason with and twist his own logic to suit his desires. He didn't say we're friends. If we watch each other's backs, it's just a mutual agreement, like a business deal or an alliance. We both get something out of it. It's fine. Emotional attachments have nothing to do with it. Selfish, through and through. But he really, really didn't want to push Puck away, not when such a like-minded diamond in the rough was being so kind, and this was the only excuse he could give himself.
"Us tricksters got to stick together, yeah?"
He'd never heard of any tricksters sticking together. As far as Sinope knew, they were all cowards, just like him; loners who liked to be ambiguous, preferring to remain aloof and act 'above' everyone else, perhaps to conceal their own insecurities. They seemed to want to be loved by all, yet not succumb to emotional attachments themselves.
But...maybe this one time, he could take a chance and deviate from the archetype. "Yeah...stick together." The redhead's smile was rather more timid than any prior.
Kindness was the worst, most devastating weapon ever.
xtatterpixie ((;_; Thank you. Sinope can act like such a know-it-all at times; it's obnoxious as heck and I just feel horrible subjecting characters as cool as Puck to him. I'm just so grateful Puck's cool enough to be able to take it in stride, especially since Sinope is used to people hating him or at least being annoyed with him after they find out what he's like.
And no worries about the wait! <3 I know how busy people can get and Puck's response was certainly well worth waiting for. ^_^
EDIT: WOW that post turned out way longer than I'd meant for it to be, too! -facepalm- Get a grip, Sinope! XP))

Puck took in what Sinope said about his Shakespearian counterpart being one of the kinder tricksters, and he had to agree that the kid was probably right. He had no clue how much he had rattled Sinope with his suggestion to keep an eye out for one another, no idea how conflicted the young Dark Mirror senshi was about accepting or acknowledging such an idea. He also had no clue just how young Sinope was. Releasing him, Puck stepped back. "Anyway, I know I'm going to think about you lot differently in future. I know there's good ones an' bad ones in all factions -- even mine. Just means I'm gonna give you all the benefit of the doubt, you know? Not automatically assume the worst an' attack straight away." He gave Sinope a lopsided smile. "Anyway, this was fun, yeah? I need to carry on patrolling, so I should get going. Standing here like this makes me a great big target for the Negaverse." Reflexively he stuck out his hand. "Nice to have run into you, Sinope. Maybe our paths will cross again." Kitomyx Argh, sorry this is so late!

"Yeah, well, I appreciate it," Sinope answered in response to Puck saying he was going to think about him differently in the future. "I know I'll be doing the same with you." Not about not assuming the worst, though. He smiled, thinking how Puck was braver than he in deciding to give people the benefit of the doubt. Sinope, however, felt himself less trusting than that. He wasn't the sort to attack anyone he mistrusted, of course, but he wasn't likely to let his guard down around people, either. Especially because sometimes the most dangerous people were the ones with the kindest and best intentions.
"Definitely exciting," he laughed, running a hand through his highlighted hair. Seeing the dread-haired super senshi extend his hand, Sinope hesitated a moment before reaching out to clasp it in a firm handshake. "You too, Puck. Take care." As they parted ways, even against his better judgement, the dark mirror sailor scout really did hope they would be able to meet again.tatterpixie You're fiiine! XD Thanks for playing with me!
