While the mermaid was not letting up, neither was Joy. Things were a lot easier for her now that there was only one target that she had to deal with.

The mermaid swam back, distancing herself from the hunter. Joy, breathing hard, used this moment to catch her breath.

"Listen," Joy began, letting the mermaid scrape at the flat of her shovel, "I'm bringing your friend whether you like it or not. You two aren't allowed to keep trying to drown people! You can come with me too so you aren't separated but you're going down. Period."

Can't say Joy didn't try to keep the pair together. Rather than take Joy up on her offer, the second mermaid lunged at her. Instinctively, Joy raised the bladed shovel in an arc, slicing the monster open upon impact. The second mermaid dissipated back into FEAR, leaving her unconscious companion for Joy to haul back to the island.
