Quote: Yes, the hatching day was approaching, but it wasn't right now. There was still plenty of time where they would remain here. Layered begins to withdraw, the layers that separate the two of them slowly falling back into place. If Endalil wanted to make a good impression then he should start by not waking others up. Layered also hopes they get to finish their nap, and that this isn't the first in a long procession of people coming and poking around. They settle back into their wallow and attempt to go back to sleep. You're welcome. "I hope you have a good sleep until it's time to meet the world." Endalil stepped back and looked as more and more candidates rotated through the eggs. Where should he head next? He was halfway tempted to ask the Layered Egg but figured that was rude as he was just trying to go back to sleeping. Stepping away and moving past a couple others, he moved to the green egg's neighbor, Iridescent Egg.
"Greeting, little one. I hope you are doing well." Endalil saw the almost grimace on Iskosian's face. The boy was a crafter and probably not used to his mind being bombarded. Endalil on the other hand, caressed the egg softly. "You have such a pretty shell, I wish you could see it." He tried to send a picture of the colors to the dragon inside, cozy and warm.

The_Muffin_Puppy The pressure on Vee's mind increased as Lightning crowded close. In turning their attention to Vee the mind seemed to fill her own. The egg felt crowded and so Lightning eagerly spilled out into the candidate's mind, only for frustration to grow as they realised that this was not a way out, just a way to move into another contained area. Lightning pushed at Vee's mind, seemingly ignoring her in a quest to get out, their frustration growing stronger with every minute until it was like electricity crackling through Vee's body. The mind continues to whip itself into a frenzy as it darts around. Withdrawing, then returning, desperately seeking an escape. Finally the presence stops moving, their anger pouring off them in waves. No! The egg's refusal is violent enough that Vee's is certain there was a clap of thunder inside the egg and a strong jolt goes through her body. It is only then that Lightning seems to realise that Vee is a person and not a place. Their shock is obvious as they seem to stare at her. They didn't- She wasn't meant to- It was an accident, they- Lightning didn't mean to- Lightning cuts off, clamping down and protective walls coming up between them and Vee. What did she want? They seem to snap as they draw in on themself. Connected as they are Vee can feel the tendrils of shame that curl around the young mind. This was nothing like either of the other eggs. s**t. Vee squeezed her eyes shut and resisted the urge to jerk her hand away from the shell and free herself from the egg's assault on her mind. It felt as though it was racing through her body not just her thoughts, every stung and prickled and crackled but she was damned between if she was going to be scared off by an egg! Eventually- another shock but the egg's this time as it seemed to realise she was there properly for the first time and then it seemed... Sorry? Surprised, maybe even a bit panicked? She was still reeling too much from the sensation of its mind tearing through hers to be sure, and the walls it then slammed up between them were something of a relief. For a few moments Vee crouched where she was breathing hard and trying to gather her thoughts back up. What did she want? Well she'd only wanted to meet it and it had gone and-! ...The egg seemed ashamed of itself and She'She had told them they were only babies, to be patient. Vee exhaled slowly and smoothed a hand over the shell. "It's alright, it's fine," she muttered, and then she tried to start her thoughts to it over again, she wasn't good at patience really but she could forgive and that was about the same thing in this case right? So what she wanted was to meet it, to get to know it and for it to get to know her. It would be hatching out of its shell soon and then it would need to find its rider; this was supposed to make it easier for it to do that, because it'd already know the minds that would be out there waiting for it a bit.

The_Muffin_Puppy Oh, it isn't the same! The egg wails in response. Lamenting can tell. If they were suddenly placed among others they would be distraught at being separated from their siblings. You cannot just replace people with other people and have that work. And how does Joscelin know it won't be forever? What if something dreadful happened?! Oh, Lamenting can hardly stand the thought! What if there was an accident? A landslide! A terrible storm! A sickness! Lamenting knows all about sickness and the thought sent them into another bout of wailing. What if Joscelin grew sick and never saw his family again!? It would just be simply terrible! How can you possibly distract yourself from these thoughts, Joscelin? No, you have to go. Run home. Back to your family, check they are all safe and well. Stay safe and take care of yourself and the others. Don't go near sharp things, or people who are sick, or- or- or- water. Best avoid water, drowning was a very real risk you know! "Ohh, not to replace them, but new friendships can help ease things," He replied, gently petting the sleek shell. Ooh, poor, poor baby. There were nice things to. Not everything was awful, even if life had started out that way for them. Joscelin sighed, slight hint of amusement crossing his face at the idea of staying away from water. "I'll send a message to them to see how they are doing." He promised and stood up, looking over the clutch. The Snowdrift Egg was small and seemingly alone. He walked over, idly and unconsciously running fingers through his hair, half thinking the red mass had been soaked, before sitting down by Snowdrift. "Hello," he said, reaching out and gently placed his palm on the shell. "I hope you don't mind visitors."

The_Muffin_Puppy Lightning was hesitant as Vee reached out. They hadn't meant to do that. They just... got angry sometimes and it was hard to not... do things like that. That was why they were over here. Their mother had done it so they wouldn't hurt the others. They got upset when Lightning was angry, but they didn't mean to get angry all the time. Slowly the walls drew back and Lightning crept closer. The pressure returned, but this time as a low vibrating rumble. There was the faintest crackle of static, but it lacked the ferocity of before. Vee hadn't run away from them. Even after what they did. They really were sorry. They didn't mean to lash out. Did Vee really want to know them? It was alright if she didn't. Lightning knows they're hard to deal with, they wouldn't think less of Vee if she left. Vee grunted and shrugged expressively and she tried to send the feeling of both down her arms and into the shell. It wasn't the only one with a short temper, she understood, and perhaps she wouldn't be that different to it if she was stuck inside an egg waiting to hatch. Short-tempered or not she still wanted to know it, and it didn't have to be so apologetic in her opinion; it'd said sorry and she'd forgiven it so that was that so far as she was concerned.

The_Muffin_Puppy Snowdrift is distant at first. A cold sensation slowly creeps into Joscelin through his palm. Their reply sounds far away when they finally do answer. They don't dislike visitors, but Snowdrift can't really say that they like them much either. Generally they prefer their own company, most of the time. Snowdrift gradually flows a bit closer, but still maintains a wary distance. What do we have here then? As the egg begins to look over Joscelin, it's clear they aren't really projecting feelings at him, but connected to the shell as he is the candidate will be able to hear the young mind's thoughts if he cares to listen as Snowdrift assesses his qualities. Practical and organised, those were good traits at least, more or less. Organisation was definitely, things worked best when organised. He avoided confrontation. Hmm. Well, that could be either here or there. Best to avoid a fight when it was unnecessary, but these were difficult times and avoiding conflict certainly would not be the best way to proceed in every case. Snowdrift almost seems to tut as it finds evidence of petty and passive aggressive behavior. Doesn't like confrontation, but is content to snark at others. Disappointing. Should Joscelin be eavesdropping on the egg's assessment, it is at this point that Snowdrift will realise, and hastily begin to blur and obscure their thoughts. If Lamenting was a rain swollen river, wet and crashing emotions and worries, Snowdrift was much more measured and chilled, like a still winter night. "There nothing wrong with preferring your own company," he as well tended to seek solitude or small groups at the most where he didn't have to fight against noise levels. Lamenting clung and Snowdrift ... analyzed. Picked apart into sections to evaluate and that was familiar in a way. His father was one to criticized and well, he was going to keep that to himself. It was much different then Quill, who presence was much more flickering, like soft and constant back ground noise. "Thank you for your time," he said softly and left the egg alone. The Noctis Egg was just a little bit away and one more for today and then he was going to take a bit of time to process it all. All of this was so different then expected. And he did have to write a letter to his mother and sister at the very least. He knelt, brushing a bit of sand from his clothes and half warming his hand from any lingering chill, imagine or real before touching the dark colored shell.

Quote: Did you ask? Average asks matter of factly. Perhaps if Iskosian asked the dragon they would be able to tell him. He'd never know if he did try after all. It seemed the easiest way to resolve the issue of unknown qualities. Besides, if a spark is inside you and that is why a dragon chose you, then you are already a better person. Still, it is good that Iskosian is broadening his horizons, you never become a better person by staying in one place. At Isko's polite request to leave he received the feeling of a slow nod. Of course. It must be very tiring for a creature that is not used to this level of mental communication, such as Iskosian, to hold this conversation. Well, Average wishes you all the best. Keep striving to be a better person Iskosian. Good luck. Iskosian shrugged, forgetting the dragon on the inside couldn't see him. He hoped the one inside was right and one of the eggs here on the sands found his spark worthy. Thank you, I hope the others keep you just as curious and interested. Stepping away, Iskosian breathed a little easier now that the pressure was gone from his mind. He wasn't sure if he should go talk to another egg or go sit down. It was almost like he had run a marathon while sitting still. An odd paradox. "Maybe one more," he whispered to himself. He moved towards the plain brown egg. The Enfolding Egg. Iskosian was a little more prepared as he carefully touched the shell. He felt like he was being wrapped in a big blanket, almost a smothering touch. Uh, hello there. How are you doing?

Quote: Oh, very well, thank you, Endalil. Iridescent begins to seep into the candidate's mind, bringing with them a feeling of warmth that finds its way into the very core of his being. Why thank you, Endalil. That such a very sweet thing of you to say. Iridescent flashes the feeling of a coy smile. Endalil is such a sweet boy, and so brave too. All that pressure and he was still here. Still putting himself out there. Despite the terrible shame that failing would no doubt result in. Well, he will find no pressure from Iridescent. The young mind seems to draw Endalil closer to them, further into the warm light that emanates from inside. Iridescent looks into Endalil's mind and he can feel their warm touch, gently probing through thoughts, memories and feelings. Who is this? Iridescent asks as they notice Endalil's attentions having been on another candidate a few times throughout the touching. A friend of yours? Iridescent asks as they pin the image of Iskosian down and draw it close. Iridescent felt like the warmest fires, the sunniest days as it pushed and prodded around Endalil's mind. He felt a little more at ease with this egg and rubbed the shell again. "I don't know if brave if the right word. I don't think it would be shame as so much disappointment. You may not know but there are so few of you left. It would be sad if one of you can't find your rider." He kept his mind open, let the baby see what sadness felt like... How it was nice to be considered a candidate.
When the unhatched dragon poked about Iskosian, Endalil just shrugged. "We're the same age. But he doesn't know much about Weyr life and is very quiet. I feel like I should keep an eye on him." Endalil thought for a moment. "I hope he would like to be my friend but he doesn't talk much or seem to want to branch out to other people."

The_Muffin_Puppy Was it really that easy? Lightning seemed to always be messing up with their temper. It projected two other presences towards Vee. One damp and sad, the other warm. They tolerated Lightning and their outbursts, but the others didn't like Lightning very much. They were too loud. The egg seemed to shake itself. Vee wanted to know them and here they were being miserable. What was there to know about Lightning? Vee already knew their temper. Mother referred to it as 'passion'. Lightning was eager to be out of their egg soon. She said the time was very close now. It was so cramped in here, Lightning was just itching to do something. Their potential was wasted in here. There were problems out there, Lightning could hear them. They could be solving the problems, fixing things, but instead they were stuck in here. Lightning was raring to go. A crackle of electricity shot through the egg once more, this time though it did not sting, it was the spark that lit a flame. Seeking out a place in Vee's soul to put a fire. Did Vee want to fix things? Passion was good, you never got anywhere if you didn't have passion and drive.... Fix things? Vee frowned in a slightly puzzled manner as she considered the question, and as somewhere inside her the spark caught. There was a lot that needed fixing - the world was going to fall apart come Threadfall if nothing was done - but she'd never considered herself somebody who fixed things, she'd always been too busy staying alive. But... Well... Now she was here.... Vee's frown deepened as she attempted to think about her own thoughts, it wasn't something she did very often. She wanted to do great things, she wanted to be recognised for them- to be more than just some worthless Holdless thief that'd die in a ditch one day and not be remembered by anyone. And... And she wanted to do something for Fenna. The old rider had despaired at how everything was turning out so... Yes, she wanted do something about it for her friend's memory and for herself, and for her own future. Was that what the egg meant?

The_Muffin_Puppy Yes! Yes, exactly! We have to fight! To give our all. The fire inside of Lightning was stoked and it crackled as it grew in excitement. Vee understood! The drive. The hunger. The need to be greater, to make things better. They couldn't just wait for things to get better, they had to do it themselves. Lightning was so eager. They would take the world by storm, the only thing in their way was this egg. A bolt of anger lanced through as Lightning's thoughts turned once again to their prison, but it rapidly moved on when their attention turns back to Vee. Vee could do it. She could rise up. Lightning could see it, she was strong, inside and out. Others would see it, Vee could be the kind to start what needed to be done. The spark to light fire. So many things would go wrong. Lightning knew how important they and their clutchmates were and there was a sense of foreboding along with that knowledge. An awareness of a storm on the horizons. Lightning would be there when it struck. They would the face the storm, they would lead others through the cruel winds and unforgiving rain. Would Vee? The egg's excited reaction to her slightly jumbled thoughts brought a bright grin to Vee's face, yeah too right she did! She didn't want an ordinary life, she could've had one of those by coming here and then joining the caverns staff instead to becoming a candidate. Grab life by the balls, right? They'd show the doubters, both of them, and any challenge they faced they'd overcome... Course, she didn't know if Lightning would pick her but even if it didn't she felt like they'd get on, and like she'd probably get on with its rider too. "You're going t'do great things, I can tell," she whispered to the egg, her own excitement and sparked up determination feeding back to the dragon within the boldly marked shell.

The_Muffin_Puppy Touching the shell of the Noctis egg yields nothing for Joscelin. The egg is silent under his hand, a dark void in which his own thoughts echo. There is not even the indication that Noctis does not want company. Even searching for a presence does not reveal a mind resting inside the egg. The quiet presence of Noctis retreating so far into their own mind that not even a flicker is discernible. There was nothing, just stillness. Which was alright... He had a lot to consider at the moment as it was. Still. "Thank you," he said and stood, giving a small bow to the queen and rider before leaving the sands. He had a letter to write and thoughts to put into order.

The_Muffin_Puppy That's right! They'd show them! They'd all see their potential! Lightning radiated with their support of Vee's decisions. It would be a waste for Vee to choose to fade into the background like that. She could do so much. This was the path that she needed to be on. The path that would lead her to being the great person that Lightning knew she could be. They both would, Vee. They'd blow them all away. Vee grinned broader and ran her hand down the length of the bold marking on the Lightning egg's shell. Too right the would! The world wouldn't know what had hit it. She sent the egg a final feeling of encouragement, patted it in as close as she dared go to a comradely shoulder-slap, and then straightened up. Well, where the shaff did she go from here? She felt tingly and electric, like everything she wanted was just ahead of her, just within reach if she only stretched out!... After some deliberation Vee headed over to the eye-catching Iridescent Egg and crouched once again to lay a hand on its shell; good job she had strong thighs really or she'd've keeled over by now. Enough about that though, she had another little dragon-to-be to meet. What did this one want out of life, she tried to ask?

Joscelin had asked politely to e allowed back in the next morning, having spent most of the evening writing out a letter to his sister and mother. He had been surprised how much he had to write to them about. To Nessalin most of all. He hadn't sent it yet, but that would involve approaching one of the riders. Was it to frivolous?
He wasn't sure Quill could deliver something that far. He sighed and walked onto the sand, giving a small bow to both the Queen and the rider.
Joscelin pushed it back to focus on the eggs. Noctis was somewhat of a curiosity, he hadn't felt anything from it. Still, there was more. He walked around to the cluster of four eggs and reached out, gently laying a hand on the Daydream egg. "Good evening."

If this was going to be her last time standing, Zeeana intended on making it a good one. These little ones needed partners, and she was ready and willing to offer herself to them.
She greeted and thanked Queen Malsalth and Weyrwoman K’rin, and then bowed. She was thankful for the opportunity, and once that was done, moved onto the sands.
She looked over the eggs, and then walked over to one of the smallest eggs, the Noctis egg. It was off by itself a little, and she hoped that that didn't mean that it wouldn't hatch. Maybe she thought, maybe it just liked being alone.
She rested her hand gently on the egg. She had done this before, but it was always different. Each egg was an individual, and she smiled. "Hello," she whispered.

Moluli couldn't believe the day was finally here! The Touching. She'd held it like a torch beacon before her. The teen was grateful they'd gotten the morning to prepare. She took a bath and did her hair up. Too bad she couldn't wear her nice clothes, but that wasn't appropriate. She had her midday meal and made final preparations while she waited for the required candlemark to pass.
She presented herself at the candidate entrance as a stern woman began to speak. Moluli took a slow deep breath as she listened to the speech. Whatever may come, she was ready. She only hoped she could do her parents proud.
Her ears perked as they were restricted by the health of the queen. She pursed her lips for a moment in worry. Hopefully this wouldn't affect Malsalth's health. Too much excitement might be bad right? Luckily the candidate master was making access easy. Her lips twitched into a quirk at the usual mention of behaving. Then it was time. She followed Sh'shi in through the tunnel.
Moluli had to stiffle a cry of dismay at the gold's appearance. She looked so terrible, the candidate wondered if they should even be doing this. Despite her appearance, Malsalth held herself with the air of a gold. She hung back a bit as others were more eager to get started while her heart ached for the ailing gold.
Finally some had cleared out and she took her chance to approach. "Weyrwoman K'rin and Queen Malsalth, I greet you and thank you both for allowing me to attend this touching." There was nothing but respect for this pair in their trying time.
Moving away from the pair, she eyed the clutch. Who to start with? A number of eggs already had candidates around them. To avoid confusion that might happen with more than one candidate touching at a time, she moved to Lamenting egg. The blue shell intrigued her. She placed a hand against the shell and closed her eyes.

The_Muffin_Puppy For a long time Noctis was silent, as they had been with almost every other candidate to approach them. Zeeana's whispered greeting echoed in the darkness inside the egg as Noctis stayed tucked away inside themselves. After several long moment there was a gentle stir and a whispered reply drifted to the candidate. Noctis did like being alone. All these seeking minds were very loud and they had a lot of emotions which were very confusing for Noctis. They liked the quiet. "It must be hard with all these visitors," Zee whispered in response. "Thanks for being patient with us." She lingered by the egg a moment longer, her hand resting delicately on it, and then moved off. As much as she liked Noctis, she did need to interact with the other eggs. She moved to the next closest egg, the pale Snowdrift Egg who also stood a little ways from the rest. It was closer to them that Noctis had been, and really, as she looked at, wasn't that far from either of the groups. It had a pretty shell, white and grey, all mixed together, but as she touched it, she got a sense of cold. Zee shivered. "I hope you're not cold inside there."
