"It is a sort of DIY shop. Hardware, nuts bolts, spanners, switches, things like that. All kinds of things, it's not really exciting but sometimes I get to help fix things and make fun switches."
He agreed this place was too huge. "You choose. Lets find something cool and secret."

"That's cool. I never get to do something like that. I just have like....kits to do when it's raining out but not doing that kind of stuff." He turned and headed down the hallway before pausing and looking at a door deciding to test it out.
"Maybe we can find a cool place in one of these rooms."

Lawrence didn't on the whole sound too interested in DIY. "My old man says its manly and stuff, but I prefer the things I'm not allowed to do. Like singing and stuff. It's ok I guess, sometimes."
He followed along with Melvin. "Do you think we can find some of those animals you mentioned? I'm not allowed animals at home, but I like to see them."

"We have a cat but I really want a dog. Don't worry. My parents don't let me do stuff I like either and keep wanting me to go out and be social cause it's good for you like - yeah sure. That's what you say, ya know?"
He pushed one door and shook his head. "No animals." He then moved to the next and then the third before he pushed it wide. "Over here. See. They are all in fish tanks." He grabbed a chair and pushed it against a wall where a couple minipets moving and rustling, making various noises as they moved to be fed.
"This one looks like a little dragon." He called over.

"I want all kinds of pets but I think I'd like a horse most of all." he said earnestly, wishing that he could be a real life cowboy and ride away from all of his problems. "I'm not allowed to have friends really, not outside of class. I'm kind of restricted, it's dead annoying."
He was derailed completely by the minipets, going from quiet and morose to very very excited. "Look at them!" he said "Can we touch them? Can we pet them?!"

"Your parents sound controlling. You can just give me your phone number or address and I'll write and call. I can pretend to be a teacher so they don't know."
"I don't see anyone around to stop us." He reached up to pull out and started to pick up the animals one by one and set them on the ground to run. Not all of them saw freedom as they smelled bad like they were infected or tried to bite him. Those he left in their tank.
Climbing down off the child with a fluffy little tart treat that smelled like strawberries, he set it down and knelt, reaching out to pet them as they ran about.
"I'm gonna look for their food." He said, getting up to look through the cabinets.
"When you grow up you should move down south in the US where all the ranches are and get some horses. Name your own ranch."

"They are." he said with a little frown. "Thanks, I'd like you helping me."
But he was very soon distracted again by the tiny animals, picking them up eagerly. "Wow! Look at them all, I've never read about any of these! They are dead dead good!"
He picked up a cute fluffy treat and pinched it harshly till it squeaked. "Wonder what they eat."
"Oh and I'm gonna!" he said. "One day I'm going to have horses and be a real cowboy."

It didn't take long to find a plastic container of pellets marked "treats," and Mel slid it over before popping off the top. Looking around, he went and found a metal tray to set on the floor as he didn't want to make a mess. Poring a pile out, the minioets gathered all around. He went and got another tray and pushed the container to Larry.
"Here."
He petted the animals a small they ate. "What are you gonna name your Ranch? What kinda horses are you gonna have?"
"I think I'd like a boat instead of a horse."

Lawr tossed some of the treats to the strange things, watching them guzzle them eagerly. His eyes lit up with curiosity. He immediately wondered how these things died.
"I don't know what I'll call it, maybe after my wife. And cowboy horses, dead good ones."
He knelt down to pick up one of the creatures and squeeze it in his hand too tightly.
There was a sound like an alarm somewhere and a declaration that intruders would be neutralised. He didn't look phased, too intently focused on the thing in his hands as it writhed.
"Do you think they are aliens?" he said.

Sitting down, he was left with little animals moving into his lap and he was petting them as they passed by before looking up at Larry. The little creature in his arm was wiggling, and let out a odd noise. "Hey, be carefu - "
The message went off and he looked up and around.
"What's that?"
He knew similiar alarms. Emergency alarms on ships getting rid of unwanteds.
...8....7...
Rising slowly, he looked around. "I think something's happening."

Larry didn't even think anything of Melvin's warning to be careful, assuming that he was just warning him of getting bitten or something as he casually tried to wring the life out of the little thing in his hand.
He didn't think much if anything about the alarm other than that it was very uncomfortable for someone with sensitive hearing. He didn't like loud noises and the voice made him want to cover his ears and hide.
"It hurts my head." he said, taking his pained frustration out on his captive. "I hope that it stops soon."
He didn't think it was anything to do with them.

His attention was torn as he heard the animal cry out even more, pleading for Larry to stop. The warning continued, and he knew it was coming from here and not somewhere far off.
"Larry stop! We have to go." He said, moving over and grabbing his arm. It was some instinctual warning that made his heart race, but as he saw the animal squirm and how Larry's slender fingers dug into it's soft fur, his mind flicked to getting it free. Whatever it was, it hadn't done anything, and there was no reason the other kid should be hurting it. It was just a innocent little animal, even smaller and weaker than they were.
"Stop it. You're hurting it."

"It's making some dead cool noises." he said, somehow finding it soothing in contrast to the noise blaring overhead. He couldn't let go of it now with so much tension and pressure he couldn't comprehend.
"How do you know it's hurting? How do you know it can hurt at all?" And he didn't let go. It started to fight less and less.
2...1
And with a slam of something horrible he was hit with a wall of agonising sound and everything went suddenly and abruptly black.

"Because squeezing something that hard hurts!" He said, grabbing Larry's wrists to try and get the animal free.
The struggle didn't last long, and he didn't know if the animal survived, before soon the numbers stopped and a swell of sensation hit him all at once before it was cut abruptly.
His fingertips touched something solid, and as he flicked his fingers out, he could feel ground. The pressure against his back also said he was lying down. Good. He wanted to lay down.
Everything hurt, and he rose his hands up to touch his face, pushing away his glasses as he tried to work through the exhausting and soreness in his body.

Lawrence made a quiet little sound in his throat as he stirred from relentless and agonising nightmares flecked with surreal strange things he couldn't explain. He ached tightly all over and felt really, really bad. There was a moment when nausea wracked him, thinking he was back in the hospital when they'd promised him so hard that he'd never need to go back, that he was better, that he was fixed. But as he stirred he realised the ground was too hard and the air was too cold. He didn't have sheets. He wanted to cry but knew it wouldn't serve any purpose with no parents here to see it.
The barking dog had stopped barking and only let out low quiet whines, high pitched squeaks that reminded him of the struggling creature he'd been holding.
Finally he dared open his eyes and realised the other boy was there too. "What happened?" he said, his voice weak as he rolled onto his side and tried not to think about the more graphic nightmares he'd witnessed. "Are you okay?" Because he'd learned that are you okay was simply code for am I okay?
