"Don't think I am one for ruining surprises. So, I shan't pry into what is being worked on." Vanu nodded, he took into consideration what his Captain had said about wanting him to see it was finished. He gave a sigh, " You are right, I don't know the future but I know what I have seen thus far from his actions. If that is any indicator of how he plans to treat me for the rest of he life, the least he can do is be forward about it. He doesn't need to hide that he hates me." He shook his head, " I already know that he does. After all, I am the monster that killed his former family."

Kidev removed his hand from the papers in show of trust in Vanu's word, giving a nod as his smile remained for the time. He listened closely, and that smile vanished. If one looked close enough, it almost looked like a sorrow now tugged at the Captain's face as he listened to his dear friend. If there was ever a way for someone to hurt the Captain, it was to talk about that fateful night like this.
He rose from his chair and moved to be directly in front of Vanu. His gloved right hand raised to take hold of the man's chin, angling him upward just right to stare him in the eye with sincerity and clarity of his own blue hues. "Ye followed me orders, Vanu. There be many things ya are, but ye be no monster. Never call yerself that. I don't care what anyone says, what the lad thinks, or the things ye did. All I see before me is me First Mate, me friend, and one o me most trusted people in the world. Does that sound like a monster ta ya?" His words were firm and unwavering. He wouldn't tolerate Vanu suffering because of his orders.WC: 202

Vanu closed his eyes tight, trying to hide the glossiness that was developing in them. He was wincing a bit but not from the touch, while try to keep his feelings at bay. In fact, the touch was reassuring. If it had come after his walls were being tested he knew he would have lost himself. The last thing he wanted was to fully drop his guard, he didn’t want to. Not yet, not while on the ship. It was a sensitive spot still, the truth would always be that he brought this upon himself. The order had been simple and he muddied it up himself by being a vicious creature. But, he would humor his Captain in this. He brought his own hands to the one that was cupping his face.
“I promise that I won’t call myself that anymore.” Vanu vowed to his Captain meeting his gaze. It was an honest truth, and he meant it. But he knows that he can’t keep himself from thinking it from time to time.
He listened carefully to the words that came from his Captain, he took a deep breath. From that perspective he didn’t seem so bad, he imagined. He allowed a tired smile come back to his face, along with the relaxed close eyes.
“Sorry, my Captain. I suppose it doesn’t from that. ” He acknowledged with a soft nod. Vanu was steeling himself and steadying. “ I will do my best to do better.” That was his go to phrase, and he planned to keep to it. wc:259

While that promise was nice, doubt peaked in the Captain's heart when he saw wincing just moments ago. This man really believed he was a monster, and that thought was enough to cause a plea from Kidev, "Vanu.." That weary smile Vanu tried to give was enough to make Kidev sigh and catch himself. His hand slipped free from the Nivasi's chin, giving the man's hands a squeeze before moving away, and coming to rest ontop of Vanu's head. There was a heavy exhale as he seemed to looked through the First Mate, and absentmindedly stroked his hair. "Perhaps I have grown too soft. The days o bloodshed fer me have been less and less. Well, next raid be mine. I will show ya the command of me blade." His hand stopped and pulled away as he threw on a dark small smile. "First Mate Vanu, bring our Navigator ta the brig. I will show him a real monster should he lie." There seemed to be a malevolent aura slowly seeping from the Captain as he turned to head there himself.WC: 181

Vanu would have lost it at the stoking of his hair, if it hadn’t been for the aura that his beloved Captain was putting off. But the feeling was still nice, if he could he would have purred at it, he settled for small affirmative bump of the hand with his head, an unspoken plea for continued stroking of his hair.
“If that is what you wish, my Captain.” It wasn’t hidden at all, soft and happy, but didn’t mean it come out like it did. He backtracked. “ That is, “ it was hard to form the proper words for this situation, “ I believe that you will be able to decide what is right for the boy.”

When he felt his hand bumped, Kidev's hand gave three more gentle strokes before he removed it entirely. Even in his malice, the Captain worked hard to ensure his First Mate was always treated special. His focus however remained on the door and what he had planned.. until he heard the soft tone and turned that intense blue gaze to Vanu. There was such darkness in them but for a moment it wavered as it fell onto his trusted right hand man. "Please, would ye gather the lad and haul him ta the brig fer me, Vanu?" His tone had been so cruel a just before but that question held his kindness. There was something about that sneer that crept onto his face that showed it was a fading trait. "I need ta ready the chains and cat o' nine tails." WC: 141

“Aye, I can, my Captain.” Vanu was gently crestfallen to feel the stroking of his hair stop but he knew that it was because the Captain had other things on his mind. There was no denying that there was a darkness looming about after this situation. He gave a bow of his head before excusing himself to leave, “I will tend to that now. Until we next speak, my Captain.” He left, making sure to close the door behind him and resumed his role as the First Mate. He had to find Orynoko for Kidev now. He didn’t envy the boy’s fate.
“Boys, has anyone seen Orynoko?” Vanu called to the crew, hoping that one of them would have some direction for him at the time. The boy had been dodging him.

Several shipmates were actually waiting outside of the Captain's quarters. As soon as Vanu came out, they rushed to him. "What did the Captain say?" inquired one. Another asked slowly, "Did the Captain ask you where you will sleep?" A newer much more eager guy chimed in, "Will you be sleeping with me?" An older pirate laughed as he walked by, "Settle down Lad. If ye be lookin' at Vanu fer company, why not answer when he asks a question, hm?" He grinned at the First Mate. "The Navigator's been hold up in the crew's sleeping quarters. He claims he just needs privacy ta work but I doubt it." He walked on. Orynoko had been hold up with a candle, and several maps, sitting on the very space that used to have Vanu's hammock. He was muttering and mumbling. "Oh jeez, Caelum, what am I ta do? Twas fine when he was gone but he's back. What do I do?"The tiri was seated beside Orynoko, leaning against his human and looking exhausted. "This is why you should have thought before you acted. You should know better than to mess with someone you have to sail with by now Orynoko. Yes he's a brute and mean, but that doesn't mean you should ever stoop to his level. The only way I see you keeping your skin now is to just fess up when they question you.""What do you mean fess up when they question me? Vanu isn't a child; he won't rat me out to the Captain and even if he tried, there is no proof I did anything. He didn't see me do anything. Whose side are you on anyway?!" He glared over at his astral but he groaned and looked back at his maps. "Sorry Caelum, I'm on edge and takin' it out on ya. Don't worry buddy, we'll figure out where we can escape to that he won't find us." He reached over and scritched behind the ears as he worked out paths.WC: 337/size]

“ Since you all seem to be so eager to know my sleeping arrangements,” he took a moment to pause, “ I am going to be sharing quarters with the Captain until next we dock,” Vanu answered, “ But thank you to all of those that offered up their hammocks for me. Shows me that the most of the crew really does have a place in their hearts for this fish.” He gave them a hardier smile, and gestured to himself, the smile was different then the relaxed ones that he was giving the Captain.
Vanu listened to the older crewman and gave a curt nod, before heading that direction. “The Captain, also would have my hide if I didn’t remind you all to get to work.” He said over his shoulder as he opened the door to the crew bunks, the smell was still there but at least they had let it air a bit from the initial incident. Vanu spotted him easily.
“Hello Orynoko.” He entered the room. wc:170

It was clear from the various sighs that a few hopes were lost in the moment Vanu had revealed his choice. However, the mood was instantly back and energy high with just the flash of Vanu's smile. The older pirate knocked a few heads together and they collectively responded, "Aye, First Mate Vanu!" The human was so involved in what he was doing that he didn't even hear the approaching footfalls nor the opening of the door. So to hear that wretched voice of his least favorite person was enough to make him visibly jump and glare up at Vanu. However he masked it with a smirk, "Ah, First Mate, you're back are ya? Welcome back! Did you have a nice swim?" There was almost a malicious taunt in his tone.Caelum noticed Vanu's approach and did try to get Orynoko's attention, "Hey, HEY! HE'S COMING! Ugh Ory!!!" He even went as far as to headbutt his human's shoulder but no luck. It was no surprise when Vanu came in and called to Orynoko and the human jumping was enough to make the tiri groan, "I tried to tell you." A rather worried gaze came to Vanu but it was Orynoko's tone that made his eyes snap back at his companion in surprised horror. Just what was he thinking, speaking like that to Vanu after all the trouble he caused?! "ORY FOR THE LOVE OF.. PLEASE KNOCK IT OFF!" He nudged the human's arm and looked back in fear at Vanu. "Please don't kill him."WC: 255

“Not many places to go at sea, when you are out in the depth of it. It was a nice enough swim, at least you weren’t there.” Vanu sighed, “ Enough of that.” Vanu shook his head.
“The Captain, he has ordered me to take you to the brig.” Vanu informed plainly, no extra malice needed, just a statement of the fact. “I imagine you know why. If not you can explain that it was a mistake. I want to make you aware that I was offered a chance to decide you fate in this. I declined and put it in the Captain’s judgement.” He came closer, but he didn’t get within arm’s reach. “He is a very foul mode, that is no play on his nature as a Papin half breed.”
“Will you go there willingly?” Vanu questioned him, It was a chance to come clean about the incident. If he so wished, but it was in Orynoko’s nature he thought, to keep up the rouse that he was blameless. wc:171

There was actual twisted amusement in Ory's chuckle at the mention of him not being in the ocean with Vanu. At the First Mate's command of halting their banter, there was a dramatic exhausted sigh given, "Tsk tsk, First Mate. Here I am tryin' ta greet ya and welcome you back." Green eyes rolled and he actually nudged at Orynoko's back, forcing the guy up off the floor. He glared at his companion then looked back at Vanu with sadness. He was worried about what would happen to his companion."Ugh Caelum!" He snapped at the astral but he was now up on his feet and crossing his arms in the process. "The brig? Why does the Captain want me to go there? What did you tell him to make him ask me there?" A brow raised and he gave a smile to him. "How could I guess why my beloved Captain would want me there? What did you do, First Mate Vanu, put my Captain in such a state? Perhaps leave the ship in as we sailed?"That was the last straw. The tiri groaned, "Orynoko stop this attitude already! Didn't you hear him?"For the first time since Vanu stepped into the room, those green eyes of Ory's shifted off the Nivasi Halfbreed and to his astral. In that gaze held so much communication that only a companion and astral would understand. Orynoko did not believe Vanu to be telling the whole truth.Caelum stomped his hoof, "I don't CARE if you believe his tale or not Ory! You are going to go with him and get this taken care of now before you make more trouble for yourself! Have you stopped and thought how much worse it would be if you make the Captain wait? Or if Vanu has to TAKE you there personally?! Act like a grown human already and just go with him! I'll be with you every step of the way so don't fear it."Orynoko glared briefly before groaning, "ALRIGHT SHEESH QUIT YER YAMMERIN' CAELUM!" He sighed with frustration before looking at Vanu with distrust. "After you, First Mate. Lead the way." If someone had walked by, they would be stunned to hear the Navigator actually order Vanu like that around. It seemed the time away only emboldened that cocky arrogance that dwelled within the human. Vanu said nothing, didn’t really have the chance to between Orynoko speaking to his astral Caelum. He wanted to interject, and tell him that the reason was because Vanu suspected his quilt already. That he already knew full well that Orynoko hated him, and told the Captain such. All the while knowing that he shouldn’t bother to react to the purposeful use of the “My Captain” phrase. But once it reached the point where he was ready to go with him he didn’t ask questions, but offered a soft gratitude to the man’s astral.
“Thank you for urging him to listen. ” It was genuine, as odd as that would seem to these two before him. He opened the door for the two of head out of the room, and to the brig.
He didn’t warn him what he was walking into, after the way he acted he didn’t deserve that level of kindness. Any other crew man that had earned such a thing would have been informed if Vanu was sent to fetch them. wc:175

Caelum was surprised when Vanu addressed him and actually thanked him for helping getting Orynoko where he was needed. This Nivasi halfbreed confused the tiri greatly. Sometimes, in rare instances like this one, he didn't seem nearly as bad. That didn't do anything for his companion's nerves though. The astral stayed close to Orynoko's side.Orynoko was not one who traveled to the brig often but he never forgot where it was. It was in that place he was first trained. It was there he received his shackles as a constant reminder that his life would never be his own. Once he was freed from the belly of the ship, he never intended to go back, let alone led by Vanu. There was a glare at the back of the First Mate. No trust existed for him. However, he had no choice but to fake a jolly demeanor, throwing on a playful grin. "So Vanu, did you bring me anything back from the bottom of the ocean?" The question was asked as if he were nothing more than a child looking for a gift, instead of his haughty tone. It seemed the closer they drew to the brig, the more Orynoko's prideful natural was retracting. The brig was the darkest part of the ship. The bilge rats were the only souls that knew and witnessed the cruel treatments that happened in their domain. By the time Vanu and Orynoko came, Kidev was there, gloved and shirtless. He had no intention of ruining his white shirt on the land. The darkness served to make his 'war paint' appear more like demonic markings as his blue eyes almost appeared to glow. His voice was low and devoid of emotion, "First Mate, chain our Navigator to the post." He motioned with a cat-o-nine tails handle to the post that ran in the middle of the ship, the main mast base. It held chains up with hooks. The moist stench of water that surrounded them was enough to make someone sick. The Navigator jumped a little and put his hands up in innocence, "Wait, My Captain, can't we talk a little? We don't talk anymore." He was trying to be joking but still was pushing his astral and himself further back from Kidev. "I don't know what the First Mate has told ya, but I swear there be no reason to chain me. I will happily tell ya anythin' you want to know freely." His feet never stopped their slow backpedalling.Blue eyes flashed in annoyance but his tone remained even, "First Mate Vanu, don't let the lad leave and follow me first order." It was clear that any hope Orynoko earned for himself with Kidev was long gone. Games wouldn't save his hide now. WC: 461
