Hajime came into town at a staggered time from Kaito. Although they were on the same team, it seemed that it would make sense not to come as a pair. Today, Hajime wore monk's robes colored black and green, not standard coloration for the Fire Temple from whence he came, but it fitted him well. In his travels to the holy land of Aren, Hajime had traded in his well-worn sedge hat for a newer model, one with strips of cloth hanging from the sides to keep the sun away from one's neck, the wind from one's ears, and the sand out of one's eyes. His headband, never proudly worn, was left at home. This mission was supposed to be a subtle one. There was no need to carry incriminating artifacts with him. He felt a weight against his chest, a bag of various coins of various weights and metals, the standard in Aren.

Hajime entered the city through the front gates, blustering winds at his back. He gazed up and around at the sights inside. Stacks upon stacks of buildings. A grand maze of architecture. All of the light in this place came from twinkling candles and flames, the scorching sun at his back, and the filtered light from above. Hajime stood there for a good long time, admiring the epic architecture possible inside this space. What a wonder, he thought, it was all built without the aid of ninjutsu. Surely, this is a holy place indeed.

Hajime looked about, and spotted a nearby guard, "Excuse me, sir." He walked over slowly, eyes still glancing up at the stacks of buildings, "I'm a monk from a far off land, here to make a pilgrimage to this most holiest of cities." He paused, and let out a sigh, sincerely awed by this all. He'd read the dossier on these people, and, well, he was certainly impressed. Not just by their feats of handiwork, but their attitude about the whole thing. Truly astounding.

Hajime broke himself out of his reverie, "Could you tell me where the temple is in this city? My directions only lead me to the entrance of this marvelous place."

Shun climbed back into the cart, looking over to both of his beasts and teammates as they started through the gate but then came to a rather abrupt halt when the guard called for them to stop. He reigned the horses back, making them come to a complete stop before he looked over his shoulder. ... Thankfully we prepared for something like this.. Shun was just about to hop off of the cart in order to provide the guard he had spoken with previously their paperwork, but then stopped when he made contact with Zarathos. The wolf hound just stared at him with a look of ill intent that made him freeze; he still was not used to the looks and mannerisms of his father’s animal companion. Zarathos seemed to shrug before he climbed into the cart, moving past Averus to take his place beside Sha and Takera. The beast looked over to Takera and then the guard before laying down.

Shun blinked for a moment as he seemed to awaken from his trance when he saw the guard start to walk away and finger the other guard some coins. At least that worked in our favor.. The boy whipped the horses to push them forward through the gate once they had parted way for them to pass. He was almost sure they would have detained the three of them for quite some time. This would have put a damper on their plans, but would not have ruined them completely. He had several other options he could make at play here, but their original plan still remained in tact. Once they got to the market and set their shop up, Shun would ask Takera to roam around the city with Sha in order to gather information on the whereabouts of the Malazan Army that resided within the Holy City of Aren.

He did have another way of obtaining this information, but it depended on just how loose the lips of the master of the market would be in a rather lucrative yet charitable cause. They would most likely look toward obtaining the open space the guard had told them about even if it were expensive, he would look at bartering to see if it would be possible to lower the cost they would have to pay each night. Having a location directly next to the Holy Citadel would provide them with an ample way to gather information from the priests and knights of the Holy Army who passed by; it would also give them the opportunity to sell their specialized tonics to more of the governing heads and pass it quickly amongst the populace.

”Takera, are all of the supplies secured? Nothing seem to be broken?” He looked over his shoulder to his ‘guard’ while briefly eyeing Averus sitting at the back of the cart. There was a benefit to Averus having those bandages across his face even if he would appear to garner more questions than answers - he would also provide as intimidation toward anyone who might attempt to hustle their shop. This was what he was counting on when they would arrive in the market and he would seek out the market master.

Shun continued driving them forward from the gate and through the city until they reached the market itself. He was rather impressed with how well the city seemed and how the market had been set up, even though he noticed the crumbling columns. He guided them carefully through the crowd, noticing the various buildings and shops that were set up within the walls and streets while whistling. ”Impressive.” The boy drove them over toward the location the guard had given them, pulling on the reigns to give the horses signal to stop. He hopped down from his seat and stretched his arms, then legs out. Their journey had been a rather long and arduous one, but it was worth the opportunity. ”I’ll take Averus with me to find the master of the market and see if we can rent this plot of land... Keep an eye on our goods.. We do not need those tonics getting out yet.”

Sha moved from his location to the driver’s seat and laid down, yawning while Zarathos looked over to Takera with what one could discern a cynical grin across his muzzle. Shun brought his pack over his shoulder as he wandered around to the back of the cart where Averus waited. He hopped onto the back and pulled a corner of the tarp that protected their goods, looking down at a few of the crates. Due to Takera having gained a slightly better control of his newfound transformation unlike Averus, when they filled the vials Shun thought it best to keep keep them separated with numbers carved into the crates - evens would be the ones Takera filled while odds would contain the ones Averus provided. This would give them a truly ‘miracle’ tonic, but could trigger into certain death once Takera swapped his forms.

Shun pocketed a couple of vials from Takera’s batch into his satchel before covering it back up and hopping back off the cart. ”Let us be off, my friend.” He smiled pleasantly over to Averus as he turned and they both took off. Shun had pegged the master of the market earlier when they came through; he was the one whom dressed very gaudy to make himself out. Typical leaders… always dressing so fancy… Shun approached the master of the market and bowed graciously before him, placing his hands together as if he were offering a prayer to him. ”Fair greetings to you sir, I am a humble merchant from within the Earth Country. Myself and my companions have journeyed far to this great city to sell our goods and we were hoping we could obtain permission to the open citadel by the Holy Citadel.” Shun smiled over at the merchant as he shifted his stance, appearing rather humbled as if he were in the presence of greatness. ”One of the guards at the entrance had told me of it along with the cost it would be to rent a night… I have a proposition for you.”

Shun now edged his tone to something that seemed both polite yet had the sense of greed lined in his tongue… a forked tongue. ”Currently we are in possession of a specialized tonic created by our village elders… it is said this tonic can heal the sick, increase your vitality and make you feel as if you were a young man again… we were hoping we could donate a large portion of it to the Malazan Army that is currently garrisoned here.” Shun brought his hands together as he looked up to the one before him. ”Unfortunately we do not know their location, however… my proposition for you, my good fellow is we provide you with our tonic to donate to the Malazan Army yourself… imagine you healing a mighty army, they would pay you hundreds of thousands of coin… your name would be sung for ages among their people! This fame, this glory you could obtain could be yours… if you would be so kind as to allow us a cheaper price for the location by the Citadel.” Shun looked up and over to Averus, hoping his traveling companion would appear as he had hoped - menacingly.

The guard huffed a sigh of disappointment when the boy didn't understand he was asking for a bribe. Shaking his head he turned to escort Juugo to the guard house. "This may take a while. We have to stop and question suspicious characters." The guard said before walking away.

Soon another guard arrived, this one much rounder and full of face. Instead of the usual armor many were seen wearing, he was dressed in a black robe that clung to his robust size. "I'm going to ask you a few questions about your trip the Aren, the sooner we get through them all, the sooner you can be on your way." The man paused to regard the question, "Hm? Oh, you must mean Aka'Sosan? Truly the most honorable man of this city, despite being the General Commander of the Army, he is always on the front lines of the battles. Anyways, back to the questionings..."

It would be four long hours before Juugo finished here.

"Ah? Are you now!" The guard exclaimed, a grin spreading across his face as he appraised the monk's outfit. Nodding to his fellow guard he gestured towards the city. "Head straight to the market, on the deeper end you'll find the Holy Citadel. Trust me, you can't miss it." The man said before taking the entry fee from the monk and letting him pass.

Averus Ikaru

Averus took a small breath for himself, as he had been holding it in after the guards wanted to pull them to the side. He had figured that some might question the bandages he was wearing, as it would be obvious that it looked like something was wrong with him. Of course, he already had thought up the idea of what he would answer if someone ever did ask him about the bandages. Staying where he was before, he stayed silent still as he looked around as they entered the city after he saw the guards passing the gold they had been given around. It was good that bribery was a must at the very front door of the holy city.

Looking around the market as they entered, Averus did what he could to make sure he gave off the atmosphere of a guard, sticking close to Shun, though not too close. He stayed a distance that would be suitable if anything were to happen. Watching Shun, as well as any who was near-by, Averus looked at master of the market as Shun began to talk, and clearly negotiate, for a place to sell the goods they had brought to sell at the market place.

Though he had little control over his new found abilities, he was surprised to know that Takera had the same as his own, though more than likely Takera was an actual descendant of the clan that gave him his power, while his was more of the result of experimentation. This made their plans a little easier, but for now Averus did what he could to look like an intimidating guard, crossing his arms behind Shun as he looked at the master of the market with his currently only open eye, a stare that showed he wasn’t paying too much attention to the details of Shun negotiating for the plot of land to sell at, but clearly he was focused on Shun’s protection, keeping his senses up for any kind of disturbance that might be danger toward the pair.

Hajime tipped his hat to the guard and passed him a long gold coin with some writing on the sides of a hole through the center. The words denominated that this gold piece was a two hundred Jakatas. He smiled to the guard, bowed, and walked away, muttering pleasantly, loud enough that the guard might hear, "Such friendly people in this city. Even the guards are pleasant." In truth, he was laying it on a bit thick, but this Holy City was a breath of fresh air for him. He hadn't been among normal people in quite some time. It was nice to be around common folk, with common attitudes and without the sinister shinobi way about them.

The monk followed the signs and passages and walkways, over deep chasm and across rickety bridges until he arrived at what appeared to be the market. He ran his hand along a railing and looked around, "Now where to?"

It had been long since Haikyo had received his letter from the raven. When the bird had landed on his shoulder, the scroll attached, Haikyo knew that this bird was something special. He could feel its soul, and it called to him. It told him of what he must know--a wise bird, this one was. He took the scroll from the animal, and it returned, flying long, back towards the city of its origins. He read his mission carefully, making sure that each and every word was committed to his memory.

Now, here he stood. He was in the midst of an entirely different country--not only that, but it was one he had never seen, and the landscapes were so strange to him that he found it hard not to stop and stare at everything. He kept the money hidden in the folds of his robes, and he knew that he would have to find someone he could get nicer clothing from if he were to make it anywhere. The sun, however, was going down. If he were going to be making it inside the Holy City of Aren, he was going to need to do it soon. And if he were going to do that, he was going to need to use the only resource he had.

He walked forward toward the massive gates of the city, looking left and right over the canyon in wonder of the sprawling cities built into the walls of the rock face. As he approached the gate, he saw a guard, carefully eyeing and checking through each person passing--obviously making sure that nobody suspicious got through to their city. Haikyo walked forward, to the guard, and he placed a fist against his open palm, close to his chest, and bowed to the guard. A sign of respect. "I do apologize, sir. But I was hoping that you could tell me where I might find a warm bed, for the night, before the sun goes down. I have been sent here, by my masters in the Land of Iron. A journey to see the great, Holy City of Aren, and to view your markets, as there are always better ore here in Earth Country. Our Katana are far inferior to what they could be, with better materials." He stated. Haikyo didn't know what the ******** he was talking about, honestly. But he spoke honestly, and with conviction. He said the first thing he could think of--and he said it with an honest face.

It wasn't a bad damn story. Or at least he hoped so.

The guard gave a cursory glance the man's way before returning his gaze to his notepad. "There's plenty of places in the city. Find one." The guard said before looking back at the man, "What was you reason for coming here again? Katanas? Hum... Show me some cold steel and I'll believe you." The guard tilted his notepad so it was flatly horizontal between him and the man, if something were to be placed on it it would not fall.

Haikyo looked at the guard, allowing a confused expression to pass over his features. When the guard held the notepad out, Haikyo eyes it curiously and then shook his head, putting his hands up in front of himself. "I believe we've come to a small misunderstanding, sir. I did not bring any of our blades here to sell. My masters sent me here in order to observe and procure metals, if possible from your Holy City. I know little more than the city itself, and the possibility that your mines could produce wonderful ores. I do hope I haven't offended you or any of your city's traditions?" Haikyo offered, a concerned look upon his features. He truly was worried that he had infringed upon some sort of way in this place. He did not know many of their ideals, beyond the small bit he had picked up before he came. He knew not to mess with chakra or soul energy here. "I myself may know of what the Lords want, when it comes to the metals, but I do not use a sword, myself. I prefer hand-to-hand if I am forced to defend myself. That, and I own a dagger. It is a precious family heirloom, not something I keep for combat." He stated, explaining why he did not have a sword at all on his person.

The guard stared flatly at the man, the notepad dropping as he realized the fool didn't understand the concept of a bribe. Instead he waved for another guard to approach and whispered something into his ear. The new guard nodded and gestured for Haikyo to follow him. "We're going to have to detain you for some questioning before you may come into the city... there seems to be some concern over your reasons of your visit and we just want to iron it out. Also you said you have a dagger on you? That'll have to be processed as well."

It would be 4 long hours before Haikyo would be released and a 1,000 Jakata fine for the Dagger.

After he had spoken to the guard about the blades, and not having any of the steel to show him, he realized he had done something wrong. This man had wanted something different--he could clearly tell this by the way he stood there, staring at Haikyo as if he were the biggest damn idiot of all time. As he stood there, he began to feel a little bit nervous, though he did not show it on his face. The man waved another guard over, whispering among themselves for a few moments before he turned back to him. The guard explained that there were some inconsistencies about his story, and they wanted to be sure to iron everything out before they carried on. There was one thing that he had found out while he researched about the ore in this country--his dagger was made out of it. The rare ore that this area produced--something that was causing some of this place's issues, was forged into the blade of the dagger he was given by his father. Now THAT was going to get him killed. Why did he even mention it in the first place? He just talked--saying whatever came to mind, so it would seem natural. He mentioned it because if they found it without him mentioning it, he was going to be doomed. Just act cool...he just had to act cool.

When they took him in for questioning they went through quite a few different details. He explained everything to them--an airtight story about how he was from the land of Iron. He could explain landmarks and various family names of the Lords, because he was truly from there. He was able to explain many things only that the true residents of Iron would ever really know. This allowed his story to go through without a hitch. He had his dagger there with him, and he did show it to them, placing the sheathed weapon on the table in front of them. They gave it a quick once over before Haikyo placed it back into the folds of his robes. They waved it off without really looking at it, thankfully--fining him 1000 jakatas for having it. They just wanted his money--Haikyo was more than happy with that. He gave them the jakatas and after they finished their questioning, they found him to be alright to leave. Thank god. His dagger was now tucked deeper within his robes than before, and he knew he would not make the same stupid mistake he had before, in offering for them to take a look. Dammit Haikyo...use your head.

Haikyo exited their little interrogation room, and went into the city. He knew he had things to do--but his stomach was beginning to growl at him. He was hungry as all hell, and he had to pick something up. If he did not, he would perish before he could do anything meaningful here. As he sauntered into the busy streets, he managed to come across a few men clad in robes--some sort of priests he would imagine. He walked up slowly, his hand up to catch their attention, though in no type of threatening way. "Excuse me, friends. I am new to this city, only just arrived. I was told how marvelous a place it was, and from all the incredible tales, I could not help but wish to see it with my own eyes. I am supposed to do some business in the markets, but I was also interested in merely learning about your homeland. Might I ask where the best place to bend someone's ear might be? I know few people probably want to talk to a foreigner, asking mundane questions, but your faith, as well as your monarchy seem so different than what I am used to. It would do me great honor to be able to understand this place better." He stated, smiling genuinely, once more, and hoping he didn't manage to screw this one up too.

The robed men turned to face the questioning peasant. The closest man tilted his head before looking at his companions, "I'm sorry, sir but the market is closing right now. Perhaps if you hurry you can find someone but frankly people are retiring now."

Nearby Benjiro would be exiting a tavern, toppling into a passing group of women who shrieked as the drunk man knocked them over. Nearby guards would turn to notice the man and would begin approaching rapidly.

Likewise another group of guards would be exiting from the guardhouse by the gate. Pointing at Haikyo they would begin rushing towards him, hailing for him to stay put.

Some how Benjiro, in his drunken state, would manage to his way to Haikyo and the trio of robed men, leading the original set of guards to converge on the same location.

"Hum..." The robed man said as he took in the seen, a brow arching in interest. "Quite a conundrum... I foresee a scene being made here soon but we have prior engagements with the Master of the Markets.. I'm sure if you're in need of a safe haven, he will gladly provide it." Grinning the men turned away, taking measure steps away from the targeted duo. Still walking away, the man called over his shoulder. "Skyward Inn, young man, you'll find it just down the path that hugs the western walls. Careful you don't get caught, I hear being in the dungeon over night is quite... unpleasant."

The two sets of guards were moments from converging on the duo, if they didn't start moving soon they would definitely be captured.

Haikyo cursed internally, not allowing the words to slip from his mouth, but instead just damning himself for missing the hours of the market. He was sure he could catch it another time. He would have to. But, his attention was suddenly grabbed by a group of women shrieking. It would seem a man, rather drunk, had stumbled directly into them. It was at that point that guards rushed in toward him. Well, serves him right, making such a display of himself. Haikyo thought, looking around himself for a moment before he realized that behind him there were a group of guards that were hailing him, telling him to stay put. 'Oh god dammit. They know. They know they know they know.' He thought, trying to figure out how the s**t he was going to escape from this without his hands being lopped off.

Benjiro--the drunk man who had run into the girls--managed to stumble his way across the street toward Haikyo, and Haikyo's eyes widened as he looked at the drunkard approaching him. He was just a random citizen. He was just drunk...it wasn't like anything too horrible was going to happen to him from public intoxication, right? Then, the priest mentioned a couple of rather...strange things. He stated that he had prior engagements, and that they would happily provide Haikyo safe haven, if he were to make it to their inn. The skyward inn. He would have to find the path that hugs the western walls. At least he was rather specific before he made his leave...and he knew that the guards were after him. At the very least, the guards chasing the drunk man did not know about Haikyo, or his dagger. So, he would have to make it seem like the drunk was the only one in the wrong here. As the man came in close, Haikyo moved swiftly to the side, placing a hand on his shoulder and spinning him--using his drunkness to his advantage in order to place him directly in the path of the guards coming from the interrogation that they had just performed on Haikyo.

He then gave a small shove to send the drunk man directly toward the group of guards headed for Haikyo--hopefully enough so that he would bowl the whole group over--though he had no way of knowing for sure. "Man! Watch where you're going!" Haikyo grumbled allowed, while looking at the guards that were following him, in order to accent 'oh hey, it isn't me you're after, it's the drunk guy', and then he did his very best, in the same fluid motion to move past, and in the opposite way the drunk man had been pushed. It was now time to make his escape. If he was lucky, he would have caused a hell of a distraction, and he did his damndest to slip into the crowd--using his peasant-like clothing to blend into them as he moved, even pulling his pony tail down so it was now a long, wavy hairstyle around his shoulders as he moved.

Michio found himself face-down in the street among a group of guards, and he turned over to look at the man who had pushed him.

"You pusssshed me?! ME?!" he slurred, rising to his feet about the same time as the guards had, but with a slightly less stability.

"Who d'ya think ya are?" he asked rhetorically, looking down at his hand to notice that the stone street had left a small gash in his hand. He grinned and held his hand out to Haikyo, showing the wound and the blood that slightly flowed from it... as well as the blood that floated out from it.

"Tarrant..." he slurred, and blood shot outwards from his hand, flying towards Haikyo with an unexpected velocity.
