Brian arched a brow and looked back into his room. It was quiet, clean, and empty. What in the world could he possibly be doing for fun that he'd answer the door in the middle of? Misha was probably just being polite. He turned back to her and smiled.

"Sure. Now is good." He closed the door partially to grab the jacket that hung from the back and then opened it again. "Ready when you are."

"Perfect gentleman." Misha gave another little tug to get him closer to her, looped her arm in his, and went on her toes to brush an affectionate kiss over his cheek. "We'll go over costume options while we walk. I have a feeling a long walk will be good for both of us."

The, with another pull, she started him walking towards the door. "And," she added gently, "you can tell me what else has been going on."

Her arm looped into the crook of his and they continued down the hall. He'd have no idea where to even begin when it came to costumes. Werewolf? Embarrassing. Zombie? Too complicated. He wouldn't even touch those "joke" costumes with fake penises and euphemisms. He'd never liked those.

Then it came to "what had been going on." Oh, lord. He hadn't wanted to go there. Maybe he could avoid it? He'd hate to lie, but a little avoidance wasn't unheard-of.

"So when's this party going to be?" Ah, yes. Conversational diversion.

"This weekend, of course. So we've got a lot to do."

Misha squeezed his arm against her side but did not look up at him, instead focusing ahead on leading them from the dorm and outside. "And you're stalling," she murmured.

Was it almost Halloween already? Huh. Thinking on the calendar, it definitely was. Halloween was on a Monday, though, so of course-- ah, s**t.

"Is it that obvious?" he asked with a little chuckle. He didn't want a pity party. As much as he wanted a hug, he didn't want any hugs. He didn't want Misha to worry about him any more than she already did. She was already giving him something to take his mind off of it after all!

"A bit but only because you forget that I've gotten to know you pretty well." Misha made sure her voice stayed low and gentle; she didn't want to risk him clamming up again. Besides it seemed to be something weighty and she was torn between even wanting to know and the deep-down need to help her friend, to make Brian smile.

"You can tell me it's none of my business, of course," she added reluctantly, "but I care about you, Brian. I want you to know that you don't always have to be Mr. Stoic McLeaderPants around me."

"Oh, no, I know that," he replied. He didn't want Misha to think he was being shy because he didn't trust her. After all, she'd been the first one he'd called when he'd decided to put in his two weeks. This was a bit different, though. This time it hadn't been remotely his choice. He didn't want pity at all, but Misha was also providing a distraction, so it was only fair.

"It's nothing big! It's just, I--uh." Ugh. "I got fired." He tried to keep his voice light and offered Misha a smile. "But I'm alright. I really am." Sort of.

"Oh." It was a completely inadequate syllable but Misha had no other answer ready to such news. She bit down momentarily on her lower lip and watched the path ahead as they walked. Couldn't they have just let him ride out his two week's notice in peace? She could only imagine how Brian was feeling; she knew instinctively why he had not said anything already.

But he did not need her questions or her pity. He would get her worry because he was her friend and she cared but she resolved not to smother him. Brian had too much pride and strength to need that.

So, once a few moments had passed, Misha sighed. "Well... That sucks a lot. I guess it was going AWOL for a week there. Just another thing Circe has to answer for. Ooo, I would love to yank on her hair some." She shot a sideways grin, faint but sweet, at the man beside her. "Yeah?"

Yeah, Circe, sure. Or the Prytaneums as a whole. Or Zeus. Or himself, considering he'd accepted the offer of the talking dog. That's what he mostly felt. It was his own fault. He had gotten himself into this mess, and if Zeus let him go at any point he was going to have to fight hard if he wanted another job on the force.

He'd just have to live with it. There was no use griping of asking "what if," because "if" was just up to chance.

"Yeah. The Chief didn't like that much. I got one of those 'are you alright' sort of 'we could help if you're addicted to heroin' kind of talks. Not fun. At least he complimented my service before then." Not that that had made it feel any better.

"So, I'm really glad you have something for me to do, because I could use a distraction." His smile when he turned his head to Misha was forced, but it wasn't trying to conceal itself either. He wasn't all too happy, but yes, he'd be just fine. There was a whole new world waiting for them both.

She read the strain in his smile, noted it, and filed it away for later. Misha was not about to comment when she was not completely sure what he needed. Brian was too important to pass off with platitudes.

So, instead of offering a shoulder, Misha offered another sweet smile and drew him to a halt. Then she drew him around to face her and she reached up to frame his face with both hands. "Brian," she intoned solemnly, "I will always have something for you to do. Just give me a minute each day to think of things."

Then a wider smile broke her expression and she pulled him down towards her. Her lips brushed over the corner of his mouth, warm and comforting, and she laughed softly as she drew back again. "I hope you don't regret saying that, by the way."

He had been expecting a hug. The fact that it had become a talking-to and a near-kiss wasn't all that surprising, though. This was Misha. He was well past the point of panicking when she touched him.

When she took him by the face, he locked eyes with her and smiled. She was lovely, in more ways than just one. This was like the hug she had offered unasked after their terrible decision out on the mountain. He reached out to touch the side of her face and let her kiss his cheek without fuss. He learned forward then and kissed her cheek in return. She was a damn good friend.

"I know," he said with a soft nod. "What, that I'm glad to help? Are you gonna run me ragged?"

"Always." Misha's eyes studied his face thoroughly and then smiled, gentle and sweet. "I'll be swooping in on you at all hours of the day and night. I'll become horribly demanding and you'll get sick of me... And then I'll cry." She turned her face into his hand and pressed a kiss to his palm. Then she brought both of their hands down, all tangled fingers.

"You'll do awesome in whatever you do, Brian. I know it."

For just a moment, Brian considered kissing Misha on the mouth. He remembered that evening (it felt like forever ago) when their lips had met on the beach. Maybe his body associated comfort with the feel of Misha's lips. Whatever it was, he was ignoring it for the sake of public, an for the sake of their friendship. He was the only hurt one. Misha, although likely throwing the party half for herself, was doing much better. It wasn't right. it might be misleading, at least.

Instead, he kissed her on the nose and gave her hand a little squeeze.

"I don't think that's so bad. You're one of my best friends, you know. Maybe the best."

His teasing kiss and squeeze and then words brought an even brighter smile to Misha's face. Contentment flooded her and a level of relief as well. Brian was relaxing somewhat. He was not radiating quite as much unease or discomfort. Watching him shy away from conversation with her felt unnatural. She hoped that, this time finally, she made it clear that he was always welcome to lean on her shoulder and use her ear.

His words certainly indicated that, she thought, the warmth flaring in her chest again.

"And you're one of mine. No matter what else I get out of this crazy ride," Misha said with a laugh, "I found you and that's worth any number of bumps and bruises and times I turn into a cat."

"Tsk." Brian let go of Misha's hand and tapped her side with his pinky. He didn't want to tease and call her a flatterer again because he felt that this was true, and he felt that this meant more than something you teased over. In reply, he touched the tip of Misha's nose with the same finger and smiled.

"Naked cat." That was a tease, and he winked at her.
