"Okay," she said. Trelenwy let her friend lead her through the market some and then gently tugged his arm to bring him back toward home. The fish was just dangling there in the dust and the midst of the passers-by and it undoubtedly wouldn't be very good for very lone.

"Come," she said.

Theriar sighed contentedly, and followed his quiet hostess home, away from the bustling market, it was a nice place, awesome to see but exhausting to be in for very long. At least so far with him being new to the area, there were only so many half hidden stares he could take after all.

When they got to the water he skipped into it, fish and all to go say hi to their pet oyster. He was not nearly as afraid of the water, at least at depths where he could touch anyway.

He splashed at Trel grinning like a little boy as he ..hadn't done for years it seemed.

It was much quieter around Trelenwy's shack. All of the hustle and bustle to be heard was of the gentle waves lapping against the shore and around the poles that held her oysters. She grinned and followed him into the water to retrieve the fish, and laughed when she was splashed. She splashed back with one eye still closed against the water.

This was much better then the market, by far. It was peaceful and quiet and they were alone with no one else to worry about. He checked on the oysters, dunked his poor fish into the water a few times to wash it off, then sidled up to her to see what she was up to.

"So, the poles look good, have you thought of adding a few more soon potentially?"

It was still pretty small but if she set up more in succession then there would be a batch of oysters maturing in a more rhythmic fashion.

Trelenwy snatched the fish away from Theriar, still smirking. Her eyed widened at the question as if she didn't understand at first. Clearly her friend knew nothing of oyster-farming, but she wasn't about to hold that against him.

"Got one," she said, pointing to a third that had appeared in the row nearest the shore. It wasn't nearly full but she had needed to add another. "Oysters don't grow. Have to go find them." She had been out "hunting" a few morning since the last time she had seen him. It had been rather successful, really. There was no guarantee that baby oysters would be formed and not swim away in the waves either. They had three weeks from fertilization to find somewhere else to nest. It was a shame they were too small to be caught! Maybe she should set up a breeding program...

Mulling over all of this, she went into her shack and disappeared. The fish would go further in a stew and she already had some ingredients, mixed spices, and broth. She was busy lighting a fire in the stove. When it caught it had to warm, so she came back out.

"Stew okay?"

Theriar looked around, shocked that he had missed the shiny new pole. He blushed a darker blue. "I um...well there is no excuse." He shrugged at her helplessly. "I didn't know they didn't grow, don't they start out..smaller?" He held his hands close together to approximate the size of a baby oyster.

"Stew sounds delicious," he was quite starving by now anyway. It had been a long and eventful morning and nothing sounded better then settling down to a nice meal with his friend. She was quickly becoming the most important thing to him and he was at a loss as to how to show it to her.

"Can I help prepare somehow?" He wanted to be helpful, wanted to help contribute.

Trelenwy corrected him by holding up two fingers very, very close together. Baby oysters were smaller than half her pinky nail, and that was just when they got big enough to see! She closed one eye and squinted through her fingers, then shrugged. "Can swim. Hard to keep in one place." Especially when they were tiny little cells.

She looked back to the shack then and made a humming noise as she thought. He didn't know how to prepare fish, but...

"Sure. Come on." She was going to wait to chop and mash the veggies and spices but with Theriar it might take a little while longer. She doubted that he had cooked much, and she wanted to take the time to teach him in case he ever wanted to move to a place where he had to cook for himself. She began back toward the shack, motioning with an arm for him to follow.

He trailed after her obidiently, glad that he would be of some use to her, he was used to working with vegetables and insects when cooking, less so with red meat and not at all with fish, his parents just hadn't eaten them ever since he was born and beyond.

It was adorable inside her hut and he loved it instantly, nothing beat a beachside cabin after all. No wonder why the Matori had chosen to live here. Why hadn't his ancestors done the same?

He took off his carry sack and washed his hands in preparation for the activity.

The shack was only two rooms, and even that was debatable considering they were only separated by a half-length wall and a beaded curtain. It wasn't much, but it was more than enough. Trelenwy thought it was rather big for one person, actually.

She offered Theriar water to wash his hands as she went to put her pearls on her shelving, and then returned to wash her own hands. Then it was out with the veggies in the first room and an array of spices. She set one up on the wooden cutting surface.

"Know how?" She couldn't just assume!

He smiled, "Yes, its the fish I don't really know how to cook." Gently he took up the offered materials and a knife and set himself to peeling and chopping in a dedicated and precise manner, if it wasn't really fast well he never had liked to rush food. Some of the veggies were familiar but some he had to ask her about and of course taste once he found out if they were toxic raw or not.

Soon he had a heaping pile of material prepared for her disposal and felt quite satisfied with himself. He came over to see what she had been up to.

Trelenwy helped with the vegetables, giving Theriar guidance where he needed it and taking over those he knew of to get the job done faster. When it came to fish, though, she sidled over and took over most of the counter, leaving Theriar only room to watch for the moment.

She cut into it expertly with the deft hands of an oyster farmer and began to remove bones. This she let him help with. Then it was all cubing and setting aside. The order to add ingredients was also important, lest something not cook all the way, so she went through this with Theriar and let him add the fish before taking over stirring. She stirred with one hand, and the other rested on her hip as she talked with Theriar.

"See? Not so bad," she said with a smile. "Some day, sea bugs." If he thought fish was expensive, though, lobster was so much worse!

He had heard that fish had many bones, but he definitely had not quite expected this many, how could they swim without getting poked by their own ribs? What weird backwards creatures they were. He shook his head and tried to flick bones off his fingers with little success. "Once I get used to deboning it won't be so bad, I just wasn't expecting quite so many."

The soup was beginning to smell very good and warm his soul from within. "It smells really good, I think I could eat it everyday."

He peered into the contents of the pot as it swirled contentedly over the fire. He felt his entire body relax to the crackle and snap of the flames, listening to the wind outside, and smelling the hearty soup smells. All in the presence of a little matorian woman who was becoming invaluable to him.

She gave a little "mm-hm" at his mention of the bones. Gods help you if a bone ever got in Master's dinner!

"No, no. Not every day. Boring." Sort of like broth was becoming, even if she seasoned it differently.

"Your sure? It smells so good." He continued to look around the cabin, "How long did it take you to make this place?" By herself it would take quite a while wouldn't it? It was a fair size to his eyes and sturdy, even though you could hear the wind whining outside.

There were little loving details that one didn't notice quite at first, like the shelf for her pearls, how the walls melded gracefully with the floor and small decorations here and there. It was a lovely inclusive whole.

He flicked the remains from the prep into the trash and washed the counters while she stirred. "You must not see your neighbors very often, we don't at home either, but occasionally one of mom's half sisters will check on us. We hardly ever see Dad's side of the family."

"I'm sure," she said with a smile. Her eyes followed Theriar's gaze for a while and then settled on the man's face. What was he looking at?

"Not just me. When we were freed, there was a motion to get us all housed." Ah, and the full sentences returned briefly, this time more complex than they had been in the past. Important things got more words. Then she shrugged and gave a soft 'hmm.'

"No. Not often. Don't mind." Back to her usual speaking patterns. She pulled a bit of fish out of the pot with her spoon and poked it with her finger. All cooked! "Done! There." She pointed to the shelf that held her bowls and cutlery.
