A second half? Nivalis blinked at Kanika uncertainly and paddled her feet in the water behind her. She'd never felt unwhole before, or not such that she thought she needed half of someone else. But she did think it might be nice to have a bloom sister, someone that would be there to learn with her and who would understand whatever struggle she was going through. Nivalis trusted all of Elzira's children, of course, and loved every Elaria that bloomed. But that didn't mean she couldn't want more.

Someone who was as much a friend as family.

Nivalis huffed. "I am not afraid of being alone. This island will always be full of my sisters. But... I don't like the idea of people leaving." As some of the older girls had expressed interest in doing one day. Nivalis thought it might be nice to see what lay beyond Yael, but she doubted it would ever be someplace she wanted to stay. "The Alkidike seem to think it's dangerous out there, and no Elaria has ever seen it... I don't want my sisters to go."

"I would live with everyone, all in the same hut! If the matron would let me. That would be fun, I think. We'd have lots of time to spend together, and everyone would be friends with everyone else. We'd all be happy and safe together." It was just a child's musings, but Niva thought that would be much more enjoyable than sleeping in her lonely hut near Elzira's roots. The matron was there now, of course, but she was an Alkidike, and not the company Niva wanted to keep forever.

She craned forward, catching her fingers against Kanika's shoulder and using the older girl to propel herself upward to catch a quick glimpse over the water and waves. "We aren't slacking," she retorted. "This is the farthest I've ever gone." Obviously. "So it is good progress, but I think it would be best if we didn't go much farther. The waves are tiresome."

“Well, if I did leave I would come back of course,” She would always come back. “But I think we also can’t take the word of the Alkidikes on everything. We need to see things on our own, make our own judgments.” They needed to be prepared for when the alkidikes would no longer be on their island. Kanika didn’t know when that would be or if it would even be in her lifetime. Her mothers were alkidikes after all, so that mean she would have to see them off as well. Now that thought was a little sad, Kanika didn’t really want to think about her mothers death.

“That would be nice” Kanika gave a small chuckle. She didn’t know how they’d all fair together in one space, but it was certainly a fun thought to entertain. Kanika was used to living with a lot of people, but she knew some elaria who only lived with their mother. Sharing a space with one other person was one thing, but sharing it with maybe ten or twenty was something else. She can see some people maybe getting antsy with so many individuals in their personal bubble. Others like herself though would truly enjoy it.

“That’s fine,” Kanika gave a small kick of her leg to redirect them a bit closer to shore. “I may have to leave soon though; I have a lesson with my mother.” She glanced at the sun to calculate how much time she had. She didn’t like leaving Niva alone but she also could not just avoid a lesson with Lumikani either. “But I will always be here if you need a swimming partner. Just come and get me.” She wanted her to know she was always welcome to come seek her out for any type of help.

Nivalis' lips puckered into a full pout as she gazed at the older girl. She knew any sisters that departed would surely think to return. This was where their mother had made her home. But there were so many unpleasant things that could occur while they were away... And it wouldn't always be in her sisters' power whether they could return or not. They could leave the island, run into a large band of earthlings, or wild animals. Her sisters were strong, but they weren't invincible, and if they fell out on the mainland, with no one to come home and tell their stories...

"You could be lost forever out there," Niva murmured. "And for what?" She understood perfectly well the desire to explore and learn and see what all of their Alkidike cousins had seen. But what was actually out there that was of interest? What needed to be explored before her tribe was ready to take what they were owed?

Nothing, as far as young Niva was concerned.

What was more pressing was that her sisters should be looking out for her and heeding her words as mystic. If she told them they couldn't leave, well, they better listen, or... Or bad things could happen. Not that she would wish anything unsavory open any of the other Elaria, ever, but... That didn't make her any less scared for those that chose to wander too far from home. Still, if that's what would make Kanika happy, to leave this island, Niva couldn't possibly try to take that away.

She hummed thoughtfully, and helped as Kanika guided them closer to shore. "That's alright," she decided after a moment. "I appreciate you coming to help me, but I'm sure I'll be okay now. I don't want to keep you from your lessons."

Kanika could hear the frustration in Niva`s voice and she chuckled. “For what? Well, if you don’t know ad I don’t know, perhaps that is reason enough to see what is out there?” Kanika didn’t know what she would be looking for, but she felt they ought to at least know and see with their own eyes. The alkidikes had told them what the world was like out there, but that did not mean it truly was an accurate version of things. It was not wise to settle outside of Yael anyways, not for how small they were right now anyways.

They would always return here.

“Don’t worry, you’re not bothering me,” Kanika said looking back. “I’m already done most of my lessons with my mom for today anyways.” And she would always come help the mystic, even if that meant missing a lesson with Lumikani. She was sure her mother’s would understand after all, they did teach them to be loyal and dedicated to their own.

As Kanika got out of the water she felt herself grow heavy, the water wasn’t there anymore to make her as light as air. She took a brief seat on the sands so her muscles would get used to the weight of her body before standing up and gathering her things. “If there is ever anything, come get me. I’ll always come. Always.” Kanika rubbed the top of Niva’s head. “stay strong.” She gave her a wink before making her way back to the village.

Whether today's adventure had gone better than expected or not, Nivalis still didn't like swimming. It was immediately a relief to be back in shallow waters, where her toes could touch sand without aid and where the constantly-pushing tides didn't threaten to bring her under. Even if Kanika had to depart and leave her in the hands of her original swim instructor, at least Niva had managed to get a bit of experience with someone more helpful.

She followed from the water in the older girl's wake and heaved a sigh of contentment. The morning felt a bit more brisk after being submerged in the water, and Nivalis thought she might like to lay in the sun for just a moment...

But she decided against it. All that sand was a nuisance, and she didn't want to waste time dozing. Instead, as Kanika rose to a stand again, Nivalis beamed in her direction. Having her sister come running if she was ever needed sounded good, in theory. What if her swim troubles escalated again, or what if something worse came along? Niva nodded agreeably. "Okay," she said firmly. "I'm counting on you, Sister."
