When Jamie returned with the tea, Shun took a cup and nodded in thanks.

"As long as it is not poison, I should be fine," he stated, taking a careful sip. Or if it was that horrible tea brand that Chel picked up one time. Then again, he was still fairly certain that had actually been poisonous on some level. It was that bad.

This? It was alright.

"Well on the plus side, I suppose it is nice and quiet around here. Not too much commotion on most days, I take it?"

Bernadine took to her teacup without a moment's hesitation, drinking down a less than delicate gulp like it wasn't hot to the point it should've burned her tongue. That was simply built up resistance. She liked her tea that way. When Jamie drank his without testing the waters first, it was because the temperature was automatically perfect.

"I can promise you one thing," Bernadine said, never letting go of her cup, "I've got no time for poisoning anyone. There's far too much work to be done." She laughed and the corner of Jamie's mouth curved up in the most awkward attempt at a smile.

"It's quiet, though, surely. A good neighborhood. Bit boring sometimes. Must admit, I'm probably the noisiest one on the block. Obviously, otherwise you wouldn't be here."

"Too much work to be done?" he inquired. Did she mean for herself or for people in general? After asking this, he glanced about, wondering if there were any projects in particular she worked on while she was at home. Maybe knitting. Old ladies liked to knit things, right?

Shun let his tea cool a little before taking another drink from the cup.

"I would say that it is a good thing that things are kept relatively peaceful around here."

Of course, it really wasn't all that peaceful. The quiet town was just a facade for the things that lurked just on the other side.

"Oh, you know. Watering, cleaning up the house, feeding the birds, organizing paperwork. I can only imagine the paperwork you see at the station, Shun. Just think that, but tenfold. When you've lived as long as I have, things get out of hand. I take care of it myself or I leave it for my son and daughter-in-law. That doesn't seem right, now does it?"

Though she showed no signs of stopping, she loved to talk off any ears who might listen, Bernadine did take another sip of tea to wet her throat.

"Crafts, too. Even old ladies like to have fun." Yeah, Shun was right about the knitting.

Jamie's thoughts were on par with Shun's as he sat there listening, knowing things his grandmother could never know. And so, unknowingly, she said, "I suppose you're right. Peaceful is nice, but I wish people weren't afraid to shake things up sometimes."

Shun certainly hated to do paperwork. He did what he needed to do and got the job done, but that didn't mean he enjoyed that part of policework in the slightest. The idea of having that workload become ten times greater was a bit of a horrifying thought, though he was certain her words came with an exaggeration. It did have him wondering just what sort of paperwork she needed to do, and why there was so much of it. Unless she wasn't actually retired, which was a possibility, he supposed.

While she gabbed on and on, he just listened quietly. He let himself get into this. But he'd find freedom again before too long. He just needed to put up with a talktative old lady for now while holding back his normal grumbling attitude.

"You certainly keep yourself busy, then," he nodded. A glance was cast towards Jamie before he continued speaking, "But I would be careful of what you wish for. Besides, the weather seems to be shaking things up enough for now."

"Not to mention the town as a whole has begun to see some troubles of its own."

A reference to Blackfriars, the missing teenagers, and Michael's dead body washing up on the shore.

If Shun were to stay longer, he'd learn over and over that Bernadine was quite fond of exaggeration. "Busy as a bee, busy as a bee." Setting her teacup down on one of the many pastel yellow coasters dotting surfaces throughout the room, she crossed her hands in her lap. "As much as I hate to admit it, you're not wrong about that. In all my years here, things do seem to get stranger and stranger everyday. What a world."

What a world was almost an understatement, at least it felt that way to Jamie. He held Shun's gaze for those brief moments, then looked back to his tea, half gone by this point. He'd deal with it, though. He'd deal with what came their way, if only to protect people like his grandmother from experiencing the brunt of the danger.

"You make sure to be careful out there, Shun," Bernadine continued. Glancing up at the clock, she sounded a faint ohhh under her breath. "Well, well, looks like it's time for me to let you back to work. Thanks for being a good sport," she said with a laugh, patting her own knee in amusement. "I'll keep my end of the bargain and give these exercises a try. I feel far too old to be dealing with homework, but what can you do?" If nothing else, she looked to be in a much better mood than earlier.

Mrs. Delacroix didn't even know half of it. To say that things were getting stranger by the day was an incredible understatement. If they were lucky, the general populace of Ashdown won't feel many of the consequences of what was going on with Other Ashdown. The changing in the weather was a bit foreboding in that regard, but it would be nice if that was the extent of it.

Somehow, he doubted it.

Shun followed her gaze to the clock as he finished up his cup of tea. The ten minutes were up. Freedom was at hand. And sure enough, the eldery woman was true to her word as well. The detective got on up to his feet, setting the empty cup down onto one of the other coasters.

"Of course, ma'am. I am sure you can handle those exercises without much difficulty," he nodded. Shun looked to both Jamie and his grandmother briefly, "And I trust you both will stay out of trouble, yes?"

Well. Jamie probably won't. He was stuck in the middle of this all like he was.

When Jamie responded, it was with a smile and eyes that said I'll try. They both knew trying wouldn't make a difference in the long run. Trying was what they'd be doing just to survive, not avoid anything altogether. To make sure Gram wouldn't scold him, though, he added, "I will."

"Of course, of course," Bernadine joined in. "I will, too. Or I'll try. Trouble oughta be my middle name by now." For a short moment, she looked as if she'd stand, but then she relaxed again with a small huff. It was difficult for her to relent control, but she steeled herself and looked to her grandson. "Jamie, would you show Shun out?"

Setting his cup down, Jamie was quick to agree. Not that it was far, they were still in the living room and the door was literally right there, but it was common courtesy.
