For a moment, there was a sort of look in his eyes. He seemed incredibly lost for a split second, before he managed to pull that back in. "It has always been my reason... That is all I have to go by," he softly stated, "I mean... that and survival."Finding further reason or purpose was going to be... difficult. If duty wasn't enough of a drive, then how was he ever going to be adequate in this manner? His gaze dropped towards the ground.

"My apologies, Shun," he said quietly. The first name was used on purpose; a familiarity there, as well as camaraderie. It was in his nature to be blunt and honest, sometimes to the detriment of others. "As I said, I wish I had more to offer but I do not. It needs to be more than those things." A finger tapped the rim of his cup. "Given your dedication, I'm sure you will find it. You should remember you have actually proven yourself more than capable in this situation." The words were earnestly said. "Even before you were able to find yourself in other ashdown. It's more than most of those involved can say: you land on your feet and pick yourself back up. Others? They've already crumbled." This was truly the type of situation that made a person.

Shun slowly shook his head. He had not proven anything, as far as he was concerned. He was floundering nearly just as much at Blackfriars. Though, he hadn't quite done as much damage there as at the ball. The theater was just a case of being unable to keep things from going to s**t when others were being stupid. "That is kind of you to say so, but I have trouble believing it."The younger man stared down towards his hands, as he idly massaged his fingers and knuckles. "I will continue to try and push forward, but I would not count on me being all that capable until I can find a way. If that ever happens."

"You'll find it," Jeremiah replied earnestly. There was a wry look on his face briefly. "... or it finds you. One or the other. It's the way of things around here." His cup was emptied and set back down. "Besides, I'd count on you to have my back in a fight and I don't say that to many." Or that he had been in more than his fair sure but shhhh.

For awhile, Shun just closed his eyes. He still wasn't very convinced, but it was something. Jeremiah was more capable than he, and could probably take care of himself better. If the fight against Beel was any sort of indicator, his assistance wouldn't mean a whole lot. "You have far more confidence in my ability than I do. I can only hope that I will not end up disappointing you in the end."If he already hadn't.

"Sometimes it's worth more than someone else does than you do yourself." Jeremiah shrugged and plucked up the empty container and stood up. "Worst case scenario? I put you through your paces in regards to magic and other ashdown. Either way, I doubt you disappoint me."

Seeing Jeremiah stand on up now, Shun went ahead to do the same. He looked towards the door, drawing in a breath. "That may not be so bad..." he murmured, before turning his attention back towards the older man, "Ideally it will not have to come to that. You have enough to worry about as is without needing to train me or any others."

His hand flicked through the air. "Let my worries be mine. It isn't as if I offer to everyone actual training." No, he only helped them learn magic and then let them go on their own. The number of people he actually worked with was quite small. "Besides, apparently you need more visits with the way you answered the door ..." There was that wry twitch of lips again.

Shun dipped his head a bit, running a hand through his hair. There was a small bit of shame for the mis-identification earlier. "You are... quite literally the first person that is not Chel to come by," he stated as he made his way over by the door, ready to let Mercer out, "...I appreciate the visit."

"Just returning the favor." As if it was nothing because it truly wasn't. Jeremiah was no fool and he was, at this point, quite used to having to check in with people. The ball had been detrimental to them all and the damage great. "You really need to reach out, Shun," he said as he paused at the door before leaving. "As trite as it sounds, and cliched as well, in this you need friends as well as allies. It's something I've had to learn." His head inclined in farewell. "I'll see you at work unless we run into each other elsewhere, Kuroda." Then he was leaving because proper goodbyes had never really been his thing anyway. Nor had been meaningful conversations but apparently that had at least changed.
