"Things," Gloom replied, "that only Gloom knows. Gloom is shadows and Gloom knows them best so that is what Gloom teaches." There was a rather noticeable snuffle as the shadow marten nosed at Shun and then looked up at him with those glowing white eyes of his. "Y'like to hide in shadows but y'aren't shadows."

The detective tapped his fingers against his arm, staring down at the shadowy creature at his feet. "I am not shadows, no, and I probably never will be. But perhaps you can teach me some of what you know? Is there something I can do for you in turn?"

"Y' could be and not know it." The response was rather prim. Gloom melted away in the shadows as they seem to slide up along Shun's back like smoke. The shadow marten reappeared there, on his shoulders, and settled. "Gloom can teach y'little thing, yes." A snuffling noise escaped as his nose was pressed to Shun's jaw. "Gloom doesn't make deals, just so y'know ... but Gloom can teach for little things."

Shun turned his head towards the shadowy creature as he appeared upon his shoulder. "One would think that I would know if I were of shadows," he commented. He felt something light, soft, as Gloom had pushed his nose against his jaw. A hand came up and lightly brushed against the side of the weasle-like entity. A part of him couldn't bring himself to quite trust him yet, but he did seem... better than most he had encountered here thus far. "What sort of little things?"

"Y'can see in them, can't ya?" Gloom asked him suddenly, his glowing white eyes flicking out to the dark shadows they were hidden in. The shadows felt like silk under Shun's hand, silky and smooth and wisping up and away into the air with each pass on his fur. "Y'don't always know what y'are until y'do." Not that he was being deliberately obtuse because it was absolutely true what he said. "Gloom can tell y'how to hide small things in the shadows."

He nodded slowly. As Gloom effectively turned off the lights within the shadow, his vision did take a split second to adjust. Despite the darkness, he was still able to make out most details within it. Just no colors. "That sounds very useful," he commented, deciding not to press the question of if he'd know if he were of shadows or not. That line of thought didn't make a whole lot of sense to him. "How do you go about that?"

Gloom nipped softly at Shun's fingers. "Y'gotta have something to hide if y'want to know."

Furrowing his brow, Shun fished around his pockets a bit. Eventually, he produced a couple of quarters, as well as his pocket knife. "Not much, but it should do for the sake of practice, yes?"

Gloom leaned from Shun's shoulders, sniffing at the coins and then a paw pressed to the knife. "This one. Meaning is important. Shadows sometimes listen more." Which meant he could put the coins back up in his pocket, Gloom retreating back to being laid out across Shun's shoulders.

With a nod, Shun went ahead and pocketed the change. The folded up knife remained in hand, however. "How is it that the shadows listen?"

"Gloom listens, doesn't he?" The sound of a soft chittering escaped before he continued on. "Y'ask them. Y'focus on the shadows and y'ask - politely - if they will hide this. It is special to y'and they can keep it safe."

Shun furrowed his brow at that. Crouching down within the shadows, he tilted his head and began to focus. As he did so, he asked in a very awkward manner, "... Can you please hide this for the time being? Until I need it?"

Gloom pushed his nose against Shun's jaw again. "Shadows won't answer like that," his voice is quiet, "and y'can't use words. Shadows are felt." Quite literally in the case of Gloom.

Pausing for a moment, Shun closed his eyes and let out a breath. He began to focus, trying to picture the blade vanishing into the shadows.

"Better," Gloom spoke as Shun seemed to try again. This time he would feel it, an inquisitive push back at his focus. It was a child-like curiousity that he would feel briefly, a question of what did he want. All he had to do now was ask and the knife would disappear from his hand, concealed and gone within the shadows that they were in.
