Hvergelmir turned her attention next to the exchange between the two knights of Polaris, one clearly more experienced than the other.

"From what we know," she said, "I believe it's fair to say that's correct: in the present day, this war was instigated by the Negaverse. They believe -- based on what their leadership tells them -- that this is a continuation of a previous war from hundreds of years ago, and that those of us who are Order-aligned are invading this planet, which they believe is rightfully Queen Metallia's, and they've been told that we mean to conquer it in the name of the queen of the Moon. We have no evidence anyone Order-aligned actually has this motive -- although spreading that message to the Negaverse is . . . an ongoing process.

"For those of you who choose to fight -- or for those of you who choose not to -- whatever choice you make is the choice that's right for you. This is not an easy conflict. Many of the people who'll try to kill you are also fearing for their lives, or troubled, or misled. Many of them are children still in high school, or even younger. There are no simple answers. Choose what's right for you."

That wasn't the whole of the answer -- nothing ever seemed to be -- but it was what she hoped answered the spirit of the question.

"If you need more information on the old war that happened before our lifetimes, I can talk about that, too -- or you can ask me afterward. Let me know."

"I..." Kairatos started, shoulders stiff as his armor, and then let some of the tension go out of him, but not all of it. His eyes closed for a second as he struggled to try and get control back. "Someone has to carry it..." He protested, but it sounded exhausted. Someone had to carry it, someone had to remember their names, those lost souls who could not even be said to have died fighting their enemies, though he mourned them no less. It was just... different somehow. No one would ever pretend deaths hadn't happened getting the code back, or even nightly in the fight with the Negaverse. "If no one else is going to talk about what happened, someone should." He added, still tiredly. "...Sorry. I know. I... " He squeezed her hand back, gently, lifting the corners of his mouth tensely. She smelled nice, and it wasn't hurt by the small amphorae styled pendant she was wearing. Contrasting bronze and black to her cosmos uniform. The scented oil inside was warmed by being close to her skin and made her smell like old memories mingled with the new ones.

"I'm glad you're here."

Hvergelmir regarded Havasu with a sympathetic look. His was, perhaps, the most unfortunate question of all, because it was the question she had no answer for -- and it was a question that mattered very much.

"You're right to be concerned," she said gravely. "Teleportation is a vastly, incredibly powerful ability -- and it's one that all Negaverse officers who've reached at least a Captain's rank possess. These are people who can disappear and reappear behind you faster than you can even notice them being gone, leaving you no time to react. If you're engaged in a battle with a Negaverse officer, you should always be on guard not just for the possibility that they'll escape, but for the possibility that they'll use that power to turn the tide of battle against you.

"Unfortunately, with one or two exceptions, this is not an ability that most of us share. Currently, I'm not aware of any way to mitigate it -- but our best hope for technological advancements of that kind is in working with experts in magitech. Traditionally, that's been the province of our Mauvian allies, and I'd consider them as your best resource if it's something you want to look into further -- but cast a wide net. We have knights of our own who are good at this sort of thing, and I imagine the sailor soldiers do, too. That sort of technology could save an incredible number of lives."

The Royal Knight of Earth was interested in seeing how things were going, and glad to see others were taking care of each other and providing a network of information for one another. When he arrived, there were knights already chatting and he hardly knew what to do with himself, feeling a little out of place if only because he was far from a newbie in this war. He wanted to help, though, and was thankful for the opportunity to do so.

He was sure Merlinite would have liked to come, but the half-youma was unfortunately not the knight he wanted to be. Camelot was working on a way to try and purify him, but the idea that he would simply destroy the man's damaged starseed by trying was too much of a risk for him to take outright. It was difficult to broach, but a problem he kept on his mind a lot, just in case some hints for a solution popped up.

(super awkward and lame intro but camelot is here for anyone who wants to talk to him.)

Cordoba listened, face visibly thoughtful as she rolled Hvergelmir's advice around in her mind.

Xifeng was a bit obsessive but at least she liked her Wonder - if aught else she could spend time there thinking or evading danger. The page of Mercury was silent - thoughtful, going over more.

"What can we do with our Wonders?" She mused. Admittedly it was a loaded question - one she supposed changed person to person and so she kept her voice quieter. The page was rubbing her face in thought again, trying to work out what to ask - what to consider next. For now, she was going over things she wondered, and questioned, before nodding. She'd ask more in a bit, but she did glance over the crowd, hoping for a familiar face.

Stonehenge nodded and flashed a smile to Delphi on her approach, the page bowing his head breifly.

"No, I prefer not die, however my lady I am afraid I'm no skilled combatant." Stonehenge shrugged, looking utterly apologetic before the teen flashed a smile. A war being continued hm? Of course it was.

"I for one, don't fancy dying. However nor do I fancy outright combat." He preferred to think, after all. However, he wasn't done.

"Have they a tendency to attack civilians? I ask for personal reasons, but I have to mind my relations after all." The teen drawled in concern.

Falias, Knight of Earth

The call was one that Marlin was familiar with, a sort of part tug and part call and one that he had come to associate with things to do with the Code.

It was as Falias that he arrived on Olympus and whilst he expected the heat, it felt hotter than last time...

Although that in part could have been down to the fact that he had still been a squire when he had last been on Olympus and had since his upgrade to knight acquired partial armour in the form of forearm bracers and on his boots which weren't exactly cool.

Hvergelmir had been speaking as he quietly found himself a space, his green eyes absently going to the stall plates that had been hung up since his last visit before giving the Cosmos knight a small nod. He also gave a nod towards Kairatos, although he wasn't sure if either knight had noticed.

The topics that Hvergelmir was talking about were ones that he remembered from last such meeting but whilst he tensed a little at the mention of the knight ring upgrade and at the mention of Mistral's name in particular, Falias for the most part did his best to remain focused.

Mistral and him were most likely never going to be friends but their last encounter had been civil - it had also been awkward as anything but it had still been civil.

And... And I promised myself that I would move forward as a knight he reminded himself
, a part of him reminding himself of the promise he had made - reminded himself that he was going to keep moving forward as a knight.

It was why he had asked Hvergelmir along when he had made his promise to the Lia Fáil and in part why he had accepted Celsus' offer.

He had made his decision and he was going to keep moving forward with it.

Down at the centre Hvergelmir was opening up for questions and whilst Falias didn't have any questions of his own, it didn't stop him listening as others took up the opportunity and neither did it stop him from listening to the answers.

He thought he spotted
Camelot amongst the other knights gathered and whilst Falias didn't shift from his standing position he did give the older Earth knight a small smile in addition to his nod.

Her pale lavender eyes had moved to their host, or at least the one who arranged for this. The wonder itself was really the host - right? "I've never seen a child on the other side, unlike the chibi's who take on the uniform of senshi. So while they have members in the Negaverse who are young, I would say our allies, the senshi, have the youngest members to be seen." Something which bothered her - it always would. It was a reason she was glad she was not a senshi but rather a knight. She was not the sort who ever wanted to be a mother, and likely would never have mothering instincts, but she knew that was wrong. She wanted to keep those little ones from the fighting, but that was impossible.

"But yes, we have no proof to their claims about the moon queen. However, I do wonder if we have all are here if the moon's former queen is not here also...somewhere..awake or not. And I wonder what the first war was about. Was it in part as they said, they do say there is a gain of truth in every story - right?" She questioned, her pale eyes taring at the Cosmos knight. The original fight they only knew so much about. They didn't know about the Moon's Queen and what had happened with her, if she was reborn and awakened then what? Would people side with her and further divide people in this war? It would surely make the Negaverse more violent, there was no doubt in her mind about that.

"That is however something for another time I think." Just so she didn't spark all manner of debate and argument, they didn't need that. They had that too often and no progress was made, they needed progress more than debate and arguing.

Looking to her fellow Polaris knight she shook her head once. "You'll need to learn how to fight. The Negaverse isn't about to let you get away without knowing how to, I've found that out the hard way as I'm sure others have. You don't need to start the fight when you see one of them, but you will need to protect yourself. They are likely to attack you." Likely without provocation other than you being in the general area. Most were rather...fight happy? Some weren't, there would always be the odd ones, but it was safe to say he would need to learn to fight.

"To take energy, not to kill. They have in the past gone out and killed people but that's rare. Civilians are energy for them. Typically at night, so going out alone at night isn't a good idea. Groups of people is a smart choice and having something on your person to use against them, mace or something." It was what she could think of for civilians to keep themselves safe.

"It also seems that big events in this city, conventions, dinners, and other things...are plots to gather energy. So if you or family attend big things in the city - be careful and watch your surroundings." Watch for people looking tired or passing out.

Scholomance stepped forth where he lingered back, and stood upon one of the ancient steps for the ease of extra height. He cleared his throat and drew back upon the garish grin that covered half his face. Smoothing the front of his jacket, he spoke.

„If I may interrupt,“ he excused himself to Hvergelmir, „I might have some useful information for that page.“ A gloved hand gestured to Cordoba. „And if there’s anyone else curious about ancestry, feel free to listen.

„Your ancestor, so far as I have gathered, was excised from the normal cycle of life specifically to guide you through the training of your knighthood. Mine remained in Scholomance for that specific purpose - and continues to do so. They’re a grand resource for understanding more about your wonder’s past, about the powers you now control as a knight, and your duties for how you are beholden to your wonder. And while you might think of them as ghostly beings that haunt your wonder, I implore you to challenge that thought. While they might be dead, their position is truly to be a service to you.

„Now, also bear in mind that an ancestor has been hanging about the place for roughly a thousand years. That’s quite a bit of time that we, as variable ages, have no concept of. Personally I find my twenty-some years of life is quite a bit of time, but what is that in comparison to a thousand years spent inside an empty, decaying wonder? So, if you come face-to-face with your ancestor, remind yourself of this. They haven’t seen another soul for quite a long time. They may be hostile, or overjoyed, or stunned. They might not even remember why they were there, or how to teach you. I can say with certainty that my ancestor remembered very little at first, but as I continued to visit my wonder, he had more and more to say about how to be a knight of Scholomance.

„As for what you can do for them, beyond learning from them respectfully, I do not know. I imagine that, somehow, they must receive recompense for all their years spent out there. I can’t imagine that they’re resigned to remain there eternally. It’s something worth exploring.

„Apologies, Hvergelmir, for absconding with your spot.“ He smiled at her with a hint of embarrassment before seating himself.

Seung had been sleeping, he had class in the morning, when he'd woken feeling a sort of...pull? He couldn't describe it as anything other than a pull and a need to be somewhere not here - not his room and not Destiny City. It wasn't a need to go home but it was rather a need to be in space. Before he gave in to the pull, and let it take him wherever it wanted, Seung grabbed the case for his contacts. He would need them to see, he was not putting on his glasses, they were a risk for being knocked off his face.

As his fingers wrapped about the case he let the pull take him to wherever it wanted him, hoping he'd be able to get his contacts in. It wasn't something many knew of, though some did, but he was nearsighted and needed the help of contacts or glasses to see at a distance. The preference was just due to how easily glasses got in the way, not to mention appearance, but for this aspect of his life it was all about which made more sense.

When he did arrive, powered up, he was blinking tired dark eyes as he tried in vain to clear up some of the blurring of his vision while he moved to find a seat. He was listening to the talking going on, it was important, as he took the first available seat he set about uncapping the right side of the case and gently got the contact out of the solution and went about the process of getting the small bit of material into his right eye. It took a fair amount of blinking, time spent adjusting it, but he had it in and his vision, at least in one eye, was clear.

The other eye was a bit more troublesome as the contact kept folding in on itself as he tried to get it into his eye. Once it was in though he was adjusting it and blinking to aid in getting it right. When he pulled his fingers away, giving another blink of both eyes, he was able to cap both sides of the case and pocket it.

Now he turned his dark, still tired, eyes to the group of people gathered and could see them!

It was, when another knight, stepped up to talk about ancestors that Venice's attention went to them and held. Yes, his own ancestor had provided him with some information, not much, he had been thus far talking to his ancestor and informing them of the time he came from - a sort of catch up. But this learning went both ways, he figured, it also allowed for bonding and them to feel each other out personality wise. He was able to learn and figure out how to approach topics with them, things they might not like. It also seemed to cheer them up, to hear about an advancing world even if some things were less than good.

The other was right though, to remember how long the ancestor had been waiting. That much time, alone, and confined would have effects on them even if they were no longer alive. They still had a presence, he didn't know if he could use the word soul, but that mental awareness would be affected. He knew his ancestor, from speaking to him, had spent much time meditating and going over past memories so they didn't forget the important things. But even they didn't remember everything, they had told him as much during a talk or two.

Hvergelmir took Cordoba's next question more in stride. It was straightforward and fair, and she was pleased to see someone taking an interest in their Wonders themselves -- not just the immediate things that protected their lives. It was a good sign that people, by and large, were getting more comfortable with defending themselves, and more willing to take on roles in contributing to helping all of them as a whole. It was a sign that, as a faction, they were growing. Getting more sure of themselves. Stronger.

"I think that's a fantastic question," she said. "I like how you think. First of all, if you're anything like me, you'll probably have found that, after several hundred years of neglect and exposure, many of your Wonders may not be in perfectly great shape. There's a lot we can do about that -- either rolling up our sleeves and trying to make repairs or clean things up, or else, in some cases, simply by spending enough time there. In some ways, our Wonders have been eroding, all this time -- but in some ways, if you're there long enough, you can feel that maybe your Wonder's sort of been hibernating, too, waiting for its next Knight to come and wake it up again. The more you visit, the more you might start to feel the energy of it all stirring around you. Depending on the nature of your Wonder, you might even start to see a few dead plants start to come back to life, if you've spent enough time there."

Not her own Wonder, of course -- her island had never been a lush paradise, and its only garden had been made of imported plants that had died off long ago and hadn't returned no matter how long she spent there -- but she'd heard of one or two cases of new growth. Babylon had flowers budding on some of the trees. Falias, on the other hand, as far as she knew, had always been a dense forest -- it hadn't died in its knight's absence. All things varied.

"Aside from that, I'd say one thing to consider here is that all of our Wonders became wonders for a reason: every knight's land is special in some way, and often that means every land has some purpose, or some benefit, or something else that makes it worth our guardianship. Try to discover what gives your Wonder its power and its importance, and work with that. Think about whether it's something worth renewing, or something that can be of benefit to you or to someone else. If there's something at your Wonder that can help us all, you're the only one who's capable of finding it. Keep your eyes open, and think creatively."

AUTHOR'S NOTE
NB: I believe cases of plants coming back to life may be subject to GM approval/plotting/Transcendence, so although Hver's observed it, always make sure you're checking with staff if you're looking to have plants come back to life and you aren't sure if you're allowed to do that!

The tugging sensation had been a strange thing, drawing Flo out of the almost-trance that painting put her in. Cobalt blue smudged the side of her chin as she dropped her paint brush into water and set aside her pallet. She’d gotten up from her chair to cross to the window of her room where strings of star lights glimmered, searching curiously for whatever had called.

At least… she felt like something had called. But there was nothing here…?

She struggled to concentrate on the feel of it, figure out what exactly it was that nagged at her… and then suddenly it felt as though something took hold of her, and the world around her changed. Gone was the bed piled with plushes, the colorful rag rug beneath her feet and the easel holding a still-wet painting of butterflies. In its place was hot sunlight and red sands, stretching to the horizon. Rather than walls, broken stonework stood tall from the shifting ground. She blinked at it all for a long moment, slowly processing what had happened, before glancing down to receive another surprise.

She was in her magical outfit, the one that came when she held the golden rope. The tall boots, at least, promised some protection against the hot sand where her fuzzy unicorn slippers would have been woefully inadequate. This must be a magical thing then. Something was happening… Had she been called by whomever had given her this power, is that what this was?

Turning in place offered a view of what she recognized as a greek style coliseum from pictures she had seen in books and on the internet. Huh… had she been magically teleported to Rome? She didn’t remember red sand there though… But there was motion inside, and to her surprise, people. People in all kinds of old fashioned or fantastical dress, heading into the great stone building. Were these other people like herself? Like Ares?

Syrtis. She reminded herself firmly. His name was Syrtis, not Ares. Which brought up another question. If she had been called here, had he? It was enough to get her indecisive feet moving and headed inside, gaping at the many people gathered here around the lower stage holding one beautiful, shining woman in pale colors. She held a massive staff and Hercynia thought she looked a bit like… Titania maybe? Like a queen, or an angel, or some divine being. She almost glowed, but maybe that was just the sun shining off her sparkling clothes.

She was guiding people to seats and Hercynia hesitantly took one, the tall and awkward Earth page looking rather small and unsure of herself in these strange surrounding. The shining woman introduced herself as Hvergelmir and she perked up, hearing the strange name. It sounded… Norse? Something viking-ish. She wondered if it was a place, like Hercynia was a forest. She at least seemed knowledgeable and Hercynia settled the title of ‘magic guide’ firmly on her as she began to explain things that grew the page’s eyes more and more round in her long face.

Knights, the Code, Wonders, the Negaverse, Descended knights and Ancestor ghosts… She felt fairly over loaded with all the information being dumped more or less in her lap. The best she could do was silently absorb it and try to pick things of importance out, wishing she had brought a notebook with her to write in. She was terrible at notes, but there was just so much, and none of it was something she thought she could afford to forget… here was everything she had ever wondered about this new power she had and the people who had taken her hostage.

Hvergelmir summoned a great beast to her side and Hercynia started, eyes wide with wonder as it reared. It looked like a caribou… but in a deep blue color, speckled with stars. She sat dumb and speechless for a long while after the lady on the stage finished, listening to people ask questions and receive answers. There was just so much of it… and so much she had been blindly fumbling around with. She felt… overwhelmed.

Had she just been… playing around with something huge and dangerous this whole time? She hadn’t run into any of these Negaverse agents that she had talked about, but what if she had? She didn’t know how to fight… she didn’t know how to do anything. Panic fluttered in her chest and she took deep breaths, hands fisting in the hem of her tunic as she struggled to calm herself.

Hvergelmir stiffened, slightly, at the questions about children in the war and child sailor soldiers. "I've met a Negaverse agent who looked about fourteen or fifteen, at the most, a young boy with curly brown hair and more ambition than understanding of what he was a part of. I met another -- a knight, like us, now -- but when I met her she was fifteen years old, and the Negaverse had already promoted her to a Captain. She was terrified that she was too evil to ever be saved. And I've met young people on our side of the war, too -- certainly there are some sitting in this room. You're right, it seems the Negaverse sees no use in conscripting certain children if they're too young to meet Metallia's needs -- but unfortunately, that attitude hasn't led them to spare or protect Destiny City's children, either. Their youma will prey on anyone they can catch . . . and children are easy prey for them. It turns my stomach to think of children forced to fight in this war, to defend their own lives from monsters -- but you and I didn't bring this war to their doorstep, and those children who are born with powers stand at least a slightly better chance of not being killed than the ones who have nothing but luck on their side. I don't like it, but even children have a right to defend their own lives."

It was not a pleasant situation -- and it was a popular line among Negaverse agents, that somehow they were a child-friendly organization just because they didn't recruit anyone with an age ending in less than "-teen" -- but it was not a situation that Order's forces had created. Knights and sailor soldiers weren't out on the streets attacking children.

"I don't doubt," she went on, "that there are some large elements of truth in the tales we know of the old war. Much of it has been confirmed by our own sources -- although there, again, Queen Beryl and Queen Metallia were the instigators, they led the first assault. That aside, their war is not our war. Their cause is not our cause. I do not serve a Moon Queen, living or dead, and a war against her is not a war against me. I'm not sure anyone in this room wants this war to go on, even if the Moon Queen does exist. And if it ever turns out that she does, there's no guarantee of what she stands for. But we can decide what we stand for, and we can stand by that. The Moon Queen doesn't have to be right or wrong -- we have to be right or wrong." She smiled. "I've seen incredible conviction from this group of people. Incredible courage and incredible compassion. There's no one with more passion for justice or for peace than the people standing right here in this room. In my opinion, let the Moon Queen come, whatever her motives: I have no doubt that every person in this room would decide for themselves whether her banner is worth marching under."

Of that much, Hvergelmir was confident. She gazed out over the room, for a moment, with a proud and fond smile. She had sat in gatherings with so many people here before, fought beside them, spoken with them. Each person had their own life, their own perspective, their own needs and hopes: she was certain that if any Moon Queen ever appeared before them, the people standing before her would have no fear in giving her a piece of their mind.

Hvergelmir smiled brightly, warmly, at Scholomance. It had been too long. "No apology needed," she offered back. To the room at large, she said, "Scholomance of Saturn is a Descendant knight, and he's been working with an ancestor who has a tendency to be a bit evasive. If any of you are having trouble clicking with your ancestors, I'm sure he can relate, and might be able to chat with you about it. Just be careful of his silver tongue."

Settling in more seriously, she said, "What he says about recompense for your ancestor's long vigil isn't wrong, either. I do know of at least one knight -- Babylon of Mercury -- who was successful in returning his ancestor's soul to the Galaxy Cauldron to rejoin the rebirth cycle. Unfortunately, what he did was incredibly dangerous, and both of them were very nearly destroyed by the attempt. If there are safer ways to do it, we don't know it yet. If anyone does any research on the topic, we'd welcome whatever you can share with us."

As the knight of the Cosmos spoke, she really was a sight to behold, Venice found himself taking in what she said and giving it a moment before he spoke up, something of a question but also a thought. "We are all not the same - ancestors too. Different planets, different cultures, rituals...maybe different ways to return their souls to be reborn? Something for each to discover on our own self...a task." He offered up in the best English he could. Standing he made toward her.

"Sorry for bad English...not first language, or second. Maybe way to return soul is separate...Transcending is different for each, yes? So same here too perhaps." He thought it best to perhaps keep his voice down, to not draw such attention to himself...he didn't want the attention but he did want to get his idea out there, at least to the one with the podium to stand at and speak from.

"Maybe to planets culture...or maybe to each wonder or individual..." Or some combination of them? He couldn't be sure but it was an idea and something worth putting out there, at least he thought so. it might be something they each needed to discover, and some would in time if they knew to look for it...to seek it?

And yes, Delphi and Stonehenge would be talking in whispers to each other now. ^_^
Venice would like to apologize for his heavy accent, and butchering of English. But yeah...can't help it.

Hvergelmir received Venice's apologies with a comfortable ease. Titan didn't have perfect command of the English language either, after all, and it had never particularly bothered her. Language was a tool for communicating. Both of them seemed to be getting across their ideas just fine, which meant that tool was working well enough for them. "I can understand you perfectly," she dismissed the apology. "I think it's a good thing to keep in mind -- we've certainly seen that many things vary from individual to individual and from Wonder to Wonder. Those of you who've made squire or knight, for example, probably all had different paths to it. We're a bit less streamlined, a bit more customized, than the sailor soldiers are, really. Much of what we do reflects the nature of our Wonders or ourselves, or our customs and traditions."

She looked around the room, trying to assess how all of this was being received. Some people seemed to be taking it all in -- others were having small discussions among themselves -- and a few others looked to be doing more poorly. There was a delicate-looking girl on one bench, half curled in on herself, with distress written all over her face. Hvergelmir longed to reach out to her in some sort of reassurance -- but from the front of the room, that wasn't really possible. Instead, she took in the girl's nature tones, her delicate fawn-brown apparel, and glanced to see who was nearby that she could prevail upon for help.

Oh. Oh, perfect.

Hvergelmir spotted Falias standing not far away, looking more resplendent than usual in his new armor and uniform. A fellow Earth knight might be perfect for making the page feel welcome: and Hvergelmir was hopeful that her youth and experience might appeal to Falias's better nature, especially as someone who'd suffered the deaths of so many young knights at Mistral. Being able to help a young page might be just the sort of thing he needed to start really integrating himself in with his fellow knights.

Hvergelmir looked at Falias until she caught his gaze and he looked back, then she flickered her glance meaningfully down at the nearby girl a few times, hoping he'd take the hint.

If not, there was Camelot that she could still prevail upon; he had a heart as soft as buttercream and a wonderfully paternal presence. Hvergelmir was relieved and pleased to see him here -- their Royal Knight was not only a powerful symbol of strength and reassurance to other knights, he also tended to lend a degree of credibility to any gathering he attended. Hvergelmir felt like his being there, a Royal Knight taking her seriously, in some way led others to take her more seriously, too. She smiled in his direction.
