Gone's the wisdom
Of a thousand years
A world in fire and chains and fear

As he noticed himself being watched, the dragon locked eyes with the stranger whispering in the ear of the lad. Though the lad was his voice, it seemed clear enough who was speaking. Xerseis' smile fell as he studied this stranger. There was always more to the mythos, as any of the stories would proudly attest. A being of choice would also allow for one to lie, and even move himself into a situation from which he could benefit.

The dragon felt the fingers of his hands tense as he felt instinct coil defensively in the presence of this stranger that only was in his gaze for a moment. Even for an illusion, it was concerning. However, if he had learned anything over the years, it was that the immutable can be pushed aside if something stronger grew to take its place.

What Xerseis ended up hearing suggested that Thalmus, for whatever reason, saw fit to see him as successor.

"Suppose for a moment that the gods were not so heavily tied into politics." Xerseis forced his fingers to relax and allowed himself a moment to sift through this puzzling revelation. "A god can grant favor to whomever they wish. So why support one decision over another? And for that matter, what the hell is so special about me that wasn't special for any of my predecessors?"

Magic prowess in his children was very tempting, even he would admit... but....

"And for that matter.... why so insistent about a bloodline when there are souls closer to the matter which made the gods so grand?"

Oracle Exi

"Your blood is special in the way that it is what the first dragons wanted to achieve but were unable to do so before they came out from the caves and secret cities created in the darkness beneith the soil" he said "The fancy word is Eugenics but what is is commonly known as is Selective breeding. The dragon came about from many lesser creatures coming together and breeding the traits that would help them survive and they continued on but could never complete the process" Oracle Exi gestured to the white haired male "For the most part your families selective breeding has completed the process. All those lesser creatures died out and only the dragon remained because it was the strongest, the wisest, the most powerful until it came out from the ground and met its match in fire and fury in the Phoenix. The only problem with reaching perfection in what was always meant to be is that you will never be as likely to reach such perfection again if you do not find one that is also as perfect. Your families one flaw is that they doomed your blood to become tainted no mater what you do. That is what is so special about you over all of your predecessors."

A red hand print appeared on the young oracles face as if someone had slapped him "If your family had thought ahead they would have began helping other families to become as pure as the crystal dragon, but they did not and it is only you." the Oracles blue eyes flickered one last time before becoming brown once more.

Oracle Exi smiled at Xerseis "The gods are always fighting. They are always trying to find the best way to stop the real monster that everyone should fear from taking back all the gifts that it has bestowed upon the populace. They support the decision that will keep the most people alive and they grant favor to whomever they deem strong enough or tactile enough or understanding enough to bring about what must come. They are all working toward the same goal but have different ways they think is best for what they all want to come to a head and because of this they are rarely ever in harmony. Right now they are and it is a rather rare moment that has the oracles fearful of a cataclysm once they are done cleaning up Agni's mess"

Did he hear that right? The gods just admitted that he was perfect?

Quite a stroke to his ego, even he would admit. If Xerseis remembered history, he recalled that there had, at one time, been other families involved in the work of genetic perfection, to be similar to himself. Such as the royal family. However, the ones that lasted the longest in this pursuit, clearly, were his house. They had few children as a result, and more preferred traits were chosen and allowed to have children. It was a tactic that was even occasionally used among the knights in his employ, who were his distant cousins. But.. that was history. He was the only crystal dragon in existence. Would his clear scales be something he could pass to his children? Hard to say. Could they really have 'helped' other families?

Unfortunately no. Things such as 'love' and duty got in the way. Such as right now. The gods were getting in the way.

The fact that the oracle seemed to have been struck was something that began to concern Xerseis, as it called his attention to the violence of the one whispering in the young one's ear. Did he want to be kindred to unnecessary wrath? Xerseis was proud of his control, and it was a matter of course that he held himself to the higher standard. If the gods were so impulsive that they felt the need to strike when other courses were likely to be available, how imperfect must they have been to be so swayed by their emotions?

And.... since when were the gods ever unified?

Such instances did not bode well, for the fallout of such peace usually meant in doubly violent and almost cataclysmic retaliations... That is... if stories were to be believed. For all he knew, he was breathing something that was making him hallucinate much of his experiences thus far.

"If I might be so bold, then..." Xerseis lifted his hands together and tapped the tips of his fingers together. He looked beyond the lad and grew distant with thought. He needed to be sure he understood this. "The gods.... Thalmus specifically... desire that I should be wed to the crowned empress... and sire children by her.... to prevent a cataclysm?"

Oracle Exi

The Oracles eyes flashed blue once and then returned to being blue for a few moments before returning to brown "you of all people should that the gods thinking and act differently compared to mortals. Though Thalmas has dominion of choice, choice can still be punished if you choose a path of self destruction. Some things should not be divulged, I must be sorry, it is a rule not to bring up the past if it is of no importance." Exi smiled as the red mark upon his face slowly faded, it left no other mark after.

"But Thalmas is normally rather straight forward. His exact words without translation" Exi coughed slightly to clear his throat "I do not care if you wed and sire children upon the woman chosen by moon and mist, I only suggest it because it will be a benefit to your bloodline to have pure magic running though their veins. What I desire you to do is bring the one that is blessed by moon and mist into the blessings of Wys. Foresight will be needed to avoid a genocide and it will take more then just counts, barons, fallen princesses, and quaking queens to accomplish the task."

Gone's the wisdom
Of a thousand years
A world in fire and chains and fear

The gods take a very eager interest in mortal affairs, it seemed.

Xerseis lowered his hands slowly and a crooked smile stretched across his face again. It was suggested by the god of choice that he do this for the benefit of having magic in his progeny's bloodline... Again... very, very tempting, especially when he considered that there were... other benefits to being attached to the empress's crown. Not the least, of which, of course, would be the resources.

The crystalline dragon began to laugh. It was low at first, barely a chuckle, but began to rise as he pondered and found himself surprised by how his thoughts had tumbled on himself.

The gods were mad.

Eventually, yes, he was able to calm down. He rubbed his eyes. Alright, so if he entertained this thought... What the deity wanted him to do was to somehow... somehow persuade or convince the empress into patterns of behavior that earned her the blessings of Wys. Goddess of wisdom, wasn't she?

He could do that as adviser, and perhaps if the chips fell that way, he might extend an offer of marriage again.

But as long as he was a mortal who was free to choose for himself, he would be sure to choose for himself.

"Is there aught else that the gods would ask of me or that I should know of?"

Oracle Exi

The Oracle Exi shrugged "Your...would you call him your god or patron or soon to be predecessor. Wants to give you a piece of advice." Exi seemed a bit hesitant now after the long strange laugh that had come from Lord Xersies "he says to be careful with whom you associate with in a land that should be been consumed by death. When a god goes silent it is never because they have stopped sending letters and that killing a god, not matter how good the reason, will always give consequence in the most mocking of ways. Something not done by the gods brought three million down to twenty thousand" Exi looked around to see the people still watching, many of them were now very uncomfortable so the young oracle moved forward on his knees and moved the Lords ear so he could whisper into it

"The gods saw what he did and have been holding back their rage. They know that he told you and that you are one of the few that have had the blindfold pulled from your eyes. The gods do not act because Agni had been killed before she had been ascended and thus upon her death she took her incoporeal form within the cold fires, a trapped goddess whos avatar now roams. He wishes to tell you to not get involved if the one that brought the end to the late Agni attempts to end her Avatar because whomever attempts to harm the avatar will truely be attacking a god, all those involved will see the true power of those that do not need a crown to reign." The Oracle Exi pulled away from him "He says to keep this in mind before you act upon any information concerning the Avatar. He also says...oddly, that something will come out of Bellris called Mayonnaise and that you should invest in it as soon as it shows up. "

Mayonnaise.... was that a kind of crushed melon beverage?

Ah, but that was a small detail that seemed remarkably generous for the gods.

Xerseis smile lingered a bit longer as he soaked in all of this information. Yes, he was told. Yes, he knew these things. However, strange as all of this was, he also knew the reason why the one who seemed to have gained the anger of the gods had chosen his course. It was natural for the gods to be fearful of one who had fought against one of their own.

What Xerseis remembered however... was that it was as far a fight as any mortal could have hoped for. It was certainly not slaughter.

This said... the crystalline dragon discovered something that perhaps the gods did not want to share. He took this piece of information and cradled it against his heart, to be hidden away. It seemed the gods themselves could not read his mind.

"It is noted."

The dragon bowed to the young oracle before slowly straightening. "If there is nothing else, I feel that I should bid you good day and allow you time to rest, high one."

The Oracle Exi nodded his head "That is probably for the best" the Oracle Exi grinned as if he knew something he did not "We will see you again soon" he said and waved.

Xersies began to lift himself from the pillow. Before moving too quickly, though, he began to stretch his legs.

"Your expression puzzles me, young one." The crystalline dragon straightened and adjusted his clothes as he smiled back down to the young one. "Care to enlighten me?"

The Oracle Exi shook his head "everyone comes here again after the first time." he said, tapping his hands on his knees again "It will be interesting when you return what you ask or who chooses to speak to you the next time"

Then... people simply liked to return.

The dragon shrugged. He glanced back to the young man. He did have one last question before going. "You mentioned that my eyes have an ability to let me see. How might I learn to use this skill?"

Oracle Exi

"A smart cookie you are" the Oracle grinned at him and raised a finger "You can learn though study and at erratic events. " he said "Any time a god is around you will see them weather you want to or not. If you dont want them to notice you and take your eyes from you its normally best to avoid looking directly at them" he tapped his finger against his nose "The more you are exposed to the divine the stronger it will become but it will not be controlled. If you choose to study it will be a bit more difficult" Exi laced his fingers together "Try practising on blue whispers. All you can do is stare at it and attempt to will what is inside to appear to your eyes. The smaller the blue whisper is the easier it will be to see it " Exi smiled "I shouldn't get in trouble for this... so if you want to begin without having to dig around in the dirt for an unknown amount of months to find a whisper. You will be able to see the threads of the Dark Queen without much trouble."

The crystalline dragon was intrigued. He expected nothing less than a challenge and now that one presented itself, he was ready for it.

The dragon lowered himself to the pillow again, ready to be instructed in this key skill. If he could start with traces and build this skill to one he could use, even passively, then he could prepare himself more. He had mastered mortal interaction. Now that he had ample proof of the divines and beyond, he needed to be prepared for them, also. He had little doubt that there was much to speak to them about.

"Begin your instruction, high one. I am your attentive student."

Oracle Exi

Oracle Exi nodded his head and then looked over at an attendant that seemed to understand the silent look in his eye and started to usher people off the second floor. Once the floor was clear Oracle Exi reached out his arm and took off a simple silver bracelet that held a single blue pulsing crystal "A blue whisper. Not much is known about them other then the fact that they are sentient and that those that can hear all that they say tend to be driven mad." he said to him "Your eyes will let you see what they really are, whom the connect to. You will never hear them... at least not as far as we are aware. Only the oracles and the Lionis family can naturally hear them and as of recent the latter hear them less and less. However at one point each royal family; Llewellyn, Letho, Eta Mara'e, Bellris had been able to hear them though prolonged exposure. If you're lucky you will be able to hear them eventually without going insane, but until then only your sight will be of any use to you"

Oracle Exi closed his eyes "Think on it and have all other vision fade into the background until only the blue crystal remains colorful and all else is in black and white. The light coming from within it should be the only illumination that matters." If the Lord of Phobos would do this correctly, it would take a little bit of time before a golden thread would burst forth from the crystal and hold it self tight between the small crystal and something unseen as it went thought the crystal wall of the tower, if he went to look out the window he would see that the golden thread would vanish off far into the distance "If what I think I know what you're seeing is correct then what you are seeing is a fates thread, however one like this can never be cut because it has already come to pass. The thread will either reach to another stone or to another person depending on how new the soul is, if it is old then you could be connected to thirty or more other stones before finding the soul that this fate line connects to now" the Oracle Exi kept his eyes closed.

Circling around the blue crystal however was something strange, neither dragon nor Phoenix but it still had wings. It wouldn't have a name since as far as anyone was aware such creatures did not exist. It had pointy ear and a heart shaped face, a mischievous smile and slender arms and legs, the wings that came from its back wearnt leathery or feathered but instead seemed to be a frail almost gossamer like substance. The creature would then stop floating as if he could feel that it could be seen and it would slowly lower itself so it was standing atop the crystal with its beautiful knee length hair flowing around it like water, it opened its mouth as if to say something but only bubbles of air came out as if it was underwater and just as the Oracle Exi had said, he would be unable to hear anything anyway "this one is a very old one, perhaps sixty crystals before you reach the end. Can you see it?"

Gone's the wisdom
Of a thousand years
A world in fire and chains and fear

Xerseis felt, for now, that all he needed was his sight for now. Perhaps, eventually, he would decide otherwise, but for his purposes, his sight was enough, for he could focus on a conversation and take notice of something, but if his hearing was distracted, of course some would be driven insane by the chatter.

Xerseis allowed himself to take note of this light, to observe it, and to study the wisdom the oracle could give. Fate, it seemed, was alive and connected, all the same. But if fate was not the realm of the gods, and the gods subject to fate, was it wise to tamper with it?

Nevertheless, he turned his attention to the crystal and its aura, the light and creature about it that seemed winged in its own unique way. It seemed, in a sense, not unlike a human, yet slight and wispy. Almost delicate. It seemed to breathe... and how strange its air.

"How slight and delicate it is. I marvel at its age," Xerseis whispered, somewhere between awe and curiosity. It noticed him, it seemed.
