algernon mercer || 25/25 || reassuring jamie, tossing a book at Shitloh's face (+1 attack also XD )

Jamie's distress was obvious and a hand was laid on his back a moment, just to make sure he was secure.

"Take a breath Shun," Alg from the fringes of the room, was a natural delegator. "Reassess and come at it from a different angle." Though Alg had fought at his husbands back for more years than he could count, even with the time they spent apart it was hard to lose that natural instinct.

"Incoming Jeremiah," The professor didn't move forward at all, instead he reached into his jacket and produced his small personal notebook. It was palm size, leather bound, snapped shut against being overstuffed. The older man flung it with amazing skill and accuracy and when it hit Shiloh's double, sounded like it was more painful and forceful than it should have been naturally.

"Jamie-" Alg's hand returned to the bun's back, this time instead of soothing there was a hinting of bravery pushed to him, something to help him not only feel better, but face this. "-You can face him."

Jamie Delacroix | 25/25 | hopping towards the fight

Blood ran cold beneath thick fur as Jamie watched Shiloh dig the blade into Detective Kuroda's shoulder. He was shivering, cold in an emotional sense rather than a physical one, but couldn't look away as Shun fought to hold his own assailant in place despite the injury. It was impressive in a way that made his stomach turn. How did you learn to be that brave?

The strong, muscled legs of his animal form felt like jello in that moment as he laid in Alg's arms. They wouldn't let Shiloh get away with this, he knew that, and he was right as they bore down on him in retaliation.

"Didn't I say those guys were bad for you?"

For a split second Jamie almost let that fool him again. As he watched them attack the shadow that wore his friend's face, he wanted to shout for them to stop, to plead with them about another way. He couldn't speak, of course, not as a hare, but the thoughts made it hard to accept the comfort and influence of Alg's magic.

Why did he have to look like Shiloh? Why did he have to say all of those things with Shiloh's voice? Why? Only now did he let it all sink in, his thoughts trying to find purchase on the slippery slopes of his own emotions.

"You can face him."

Finally there was strength in his legs again and he began to squirm, kicking and writhing—a thing he'd apologize for later—until he was free of Alg's arms and landing with a thud. He ran towards Shiloh and the detectives. He had to do something, stop them, stop Shiloh, something. He ran, but he wouldn't make it very far.

Jamie had no idea what would happen when the mask came off.

    15/25 | Beel | Unveiled +3 to hit since he's a Fetch

Everything exploded at once, a flurry of movement coming from every corner of the room. There was a book, there was Jamie—bolting—and Shun, he's target, writhing under the force of the stab. Then there was ******** Mercer—someone who hadn't been there, and then... was.

The blow to his face sent him reeling. He could feel his fingers empty of the hilt, feel his world turn upside down, feel everything shift to some perplexing, unimaginable vertigo. It didn't stop when his head hit the ground. It didn't stop when he realized his skin—his flawless, smooth skin—was flush to the carpet.

Shiloh lifted himself back up with a smooth, delicate motion, arms and spine fluid as he pushed himself up into a seated position. His eyes caught the closest thing—those of a tiny, snow white hare—still shimmering in a crystalline blue. His eyes didn't look tired. His face didn't look as if it'd been under the wear and tear of sixteen long years of abuse. His hand reached up as a bleary sort of reconfirmation, touching the space around his eyes to confirm the absence of his mask. He hid behind the mask. He sighed. A shame, really; Melany did love the curls...

Everything shifted at once. His hair started to drip from his head, his skin started to slough in thick layers, peeling off like wisps from the body of a ghost. His face came loose in an ethereal way, seemingly dissipating to dust in his hand.

What was left was this horrific, sunken in skeleton, face made of rotted muscle. His eyes were nonexistent. He was a shell. They gave way to darkness. They gave way to windows, to the sheer volume of nothing behind the creatures mask. This was not Shiloh Beaumont. This was not anything close to human. The hand dropped—fingers long and gnarled—and gingerly set itself back down on the ground. It didn't bother moving from that spot. It didn't bother anymore with fighting back.

"You know," the voice is still vaguely Shiloh's, but it's crackling in spots like the timbre is starting to fade, "I didn't quite like the facade of an eighteen year old anyway."

Shun Kuroda 20/25 | The D20 is in dice jail. Skulking around to attack

Shiloh had been knocked away from Shun, who took a few extra steps back as a bit of chaos erupted. Jeremiah had shown up right by them on ******** fire, and he was pretty certain Algernon had just... thrown his book. And then the double had been unmasked.

He shot Alg a sharp look before looking back at... something that was definitely not Shiloh. The detective suspected that the doubles were not actually human, but he hadn't quite expected their true forms to be like that.

Gritting his teeth, he pressed a hand against his shoulder while he began to quietly move. He didn't know what the hell this thing was, but he was still determined to take it down, with or without the backup he never called for.

Shortly after the creature spoke, he came back around from behind Jeremiah to flank the shriveled looking figure for his assault. The younger detective curled the fist of his uninjured arm as he tried to slam that into the side of the doppelganger's skull.

jeremiah mercer || 12/27 || thanks for the mask! casting again!

Jeremiah instinctively stepped aside as Algie spoke, moving out of the way of the notebook. He knew how much those could hurt and could only imagine the damage it would cause-

Still, the mask of fabric was within his hand now and the detective watched as what was Shiloh melted away and revealed what was underneath. This was, in some ways, much worse than when Krasnya's double had been revealed.

"It isn't your Shiloh, Jamie," Jeremiah said to him, glowing eyes watching as Jamie moved. "It's something that took his place." The older detective shot Shun a look, a short nod given at his attempt to flank while he rolled his shoulders.

Fire crackled at his fingers once more as he prepared, watching Shun attack. "You would have done better to kept your mouth shut," he responded, "the lot of you are entirely too chatty."

    algernon mercer || 25/25 || healing jeremiah

Jamie began to squrim with some force and Alg let go of him, concerned but much more comfortable with the young moonwalker facing this problem head on.

"Jesus-" He hissed with disgust under breath at the thing, like some sort of zombie, that had revealed itself in front of them. Alg moved forward, retrieved his notebook from where it had hit and slid across the floor, and moved again to Jeremiah with a warm rejuvenating hand.

"Be careful. Cornered things can be the most dangerous." The thing that had been wearing Shiloh's skin had certainly lost that single redeeming edge in their minds. Revealed to be a fraud it couldn't use Shiloh's face against any of them now.

Jamie Delacroix | 25/25 | wanting answers

The air was ominous with something Jamie couldn't place as he bounced to a stop, nose slowly twitching, muscles tense with fight-or-flight. For a moment Shiloh was Shiloh, except there was imperfection in his perfection, something others might not notice, but they were things Jamie had found himself picking up on. It wasn't just this evening, either. Subconsciously he'd noticed long before. There were no circles under Shiloh's eyes, his hands were far too smooth and, most strikingly, so were his arms... For as perfect as the copy had seemed, it wasn't. And now Jamie would learn why.

It was like a horror movie and boy did it have a good budget. Those special effects were top notch. Except this was real life and Other Ashdown was the stage where Jamie found himself playing a supporting role he'd never wanted.

On the floor, far too casual about it, his best friend was literally falling apart. Sure, he knew it was a fake, and he continued to attempt reminding himself of that fact. "It isn't your Shiloh, Jamie." Detective Mercer's words clung to his mind, reverberating, repeating, over and over. Even still, there was pain in his chest.

This was the Shiloh he'd spent so much time with. This was the Shiloh who had held his hand and comforted him, but it was also the very same Shiloh who had tried to beat down his trust in others and who had manipulated his fragile emotions. It was the very same Shiloh he'd kissed those few times he let his heart get away from him.

Looks like he'd kissed a monster.

While everyone else picked up their assaults or prepared them, Jamie sat, paralyzed with realization and self-loathing. He knew deep down he should help. He knew he should fight to subdue the fake, but it was hard to move. Beneath his thick fur he was shivering. Standing on his own legs was hard all over again. Why, he asked himself again. Why did it have to be Shiloh? Why?

"Why?!" he screamed, and it sounded warped and strained as he shifted back to his were form, face still more hare than it should've been. He was on his knees, hands curled into fists on the floor, shaking and trying not to cry. "Why did you do this? Who are you??"

As he tried to get to his feet, he stumbled and hit one knee again. "Why Shiloh... W-Why did you do this to him...? Why him?!" And why me was the unspoken follow-up.

    10/25 | Beel | No insight | +3 to hit since he's a Fetch | Attacking Jamie

He knew he had lost. Shun's fist smashing into his head as his eyes remained locked onto Jamie's; yeah, he knew he had lost. There was a cold fire crackling in Jeremiah's hands, something that would soon be burning into his already decaying flesh. He sighed. It was a heavy sound; heavy with loathing, with pain. How disgusting and ugly he must look from this place on the floor, beaten down and whipped.

"My name is Beel," he groveled as he pushed himself back to his feet, voice haggard and rough like audible sandpaper. "Why did I do this...?"

Would they kill him? Would they let him live? Mercer had what he came for.

Beel roared out a ghastly shriek, one that dripped with malice and fear. He would not win here. All he could do was drag who he could down with him. Swift, inhuman, nails gnarled like thick claws on his fingertips, Beel lunged at Jamie Delacroix, turning all his frustration and rage on him at once.

"Because he's WORTHLESS," he snarled, "Because you're WORTHLESS." his body seized, grip reaching for Jamie's neck, "You were nothing without him, NOTHING without me!"

"All you do is sit back and cry! You cry and cry and cry and you never act. You're sickening Delacroix, you're weak, you're pathetic and you'll never make a goddamn difference. What would you do without them?" his voice was a hiss, "Are you going to lay down and die? FIGHT ME."

Shun Kuroda 20/25 | Attacking Beel

Finally, a blow had connected. There wasn't much as far as feelings of satisfaction, though. This fight was not yet over.

The creature ended up turning its sights upon Jamie. While he had lunged for the moonwalker, Shun unrelentlessly kept up his own assault, as he he attempted to grab the one known as Beel and throw him down to the floor. Pain surged through his wounded shoulder, but he did it anyway.

The taunts, while not directed at him, still bothered the detective somewhat.

"Mercer is right. You talk too ******** much," he grumbled.

"Shun-" Alg's tone was firm, but the creature seemed, even in it's anger and reactionary violence to be battered, "-don't kill it. We need answers. Jamie needs to deal with this."

His book ended up back in his jacket opposite the grimoire that was also nestled against his breast. He moved to the younger police officer and pressed a warm hand to his back unprompted after he'd thrown Beel down again.

"Let me look at your shoulder."

Jamie Delacroix | 20/25 | actually fights to save himself

If things had been a blur before, it was like time hardly existed now. One second he was trying to stand, legs wobbling, heart aching with things he just didn't have the capacity to comprehend. The next he was on the ground, head the part that ached now where it had hit the floor. The monster didn't have him completely at first; Detective Kuroda had been able to knock him down and that gave Jamie a short respite, but he couldn't tell left from right and so couldn't manage to gather himself in time to get away. Before he knew it, Beel was back on him, hands around his throat, and Jamie couldn't see straight.

Worthless... Well, he wasn't wrong, not really. Jamie didn't have much going for him before he'd met Shiloh, before he'd delved into this world of magic and make believe. Even now, even though he doubted himself, he fought to change that, he tried his hardest because he'd learned that moonwalkers were supposed to be protectors and he thought, if I could do that, maybe people would look at me.

Jamie couldn't decide if he'd been right or wrong about that one. People were looking at him now, but this sure wasn't the way he'd wanted it to go.

Choking and sputtering, he writhed, clawing at the hands around his neck, the ones that felt sickening to the touch. It would be easier to quit, give up, let someone else pull Beel off of him if they managed to make it in time. Surely they would, surely his own ineffectual struggles wouldn't matter in the long run, except...

In that moment, Jamie remembered the real Shiloh, the one he'd been looking for before Alg had found him. He remembered that his friend was still there, very much alive, and even if he wasn't waiting for him because he didn't remember what they'd had, he couldn't just abandon him to the whims of the Otherworld. Quitting really wasn't an option.

Gathering as much strength as he could, he coiled his legs, kicking up at Beel in an attempt to get him off.

jeremiah mercer || 17/27 || putting beel down! (needs a breather)

"We need it restrained! Don't kill it!" Not that Jeremiah was not in the middle of warming up, that cold fire crackled at his fingers because he had learned to embrace that which was always on his mind. He watched as his husband went to tend to Shun after he himself received a warm touch.

It did, as always, give him a boost that he sorely needed. Jeremiah was, if anything, pushing the extent of his abilities.

Still-

This thing that was not Shiloh was talking and it was after Jamie and there were hands-

Jeremiah disappeared again, reappearing next to the double and Jamie. "Let. Him. Go." Cold green fire lashed out as the silver-haired man put a hand on him and tugged back hard. It was not consuming him, the fire, but instead forming bonds that would hold him.

Jamie's kick would probably help him pull the double off.

"You know nothing," he growled out, "about Jamie or Shiloh or who they truly are." Not when it mattered, not when things got like this. It seemed, if anything, these doubles were the worst parts of the people they pretended to be.

    0/25 | Beel | ******** Wrecked

Beel screamed at the fire. He felt his grip loosen as Shun grappled with his body, and again as Jeremiah kicked him to the ground. His hands were cold. They sought that feeling of warmth—that cradle of heat—firmly grasped around Jamie's neck.

The kick, too. Though there was no blood, the front of his ball gown was torn where Jamie had bucked him. His body felt tired and ragged. His thoughts were jumbled. He was ugly and naked and alone, so very very very alone. The humans were triumphant. Why wouldn't they be? When did the bad guy ever win? When did he ever become the bad guy? He was a creature that fought for what he believed in—disagreements aside—was he truly evil? He was not human. Beel was far from that. Could he be judged on the same scale?

It was a venomous cycle of woe and self pity, the only things to keep Beel company in his mind as he felt the flames shackling around him. He groaned, exhausted and wounded, sounding like a fawn caught in a bear trap. Would he die here? He asked himself again, over and over and over. Was it worth it? He didn't want to die. He didn't want to feel the cold stasis of nonexistence. He wanted to live. He wanted to free himself of this god forsaken cage.

The pain turned to panic. His head lifted, and it was impossible to tell who it was he locked eye contact with. "It's always the same." his voice was a low, whiny wheeze. He didn't elaborate any further.

Instead, he pushed himself up slowly, wobbling as he struggled weakly against his restraints. A wail—almost mournful, sorrowed—gurgled from his throat.

With the last of his energy, Beel fled.

Shun Kuroda 25/25 | Angsting then trying to stop a fleeing suspect

Shun backed off as Jeremiah blinked over and did more things with that green flame of his. Yes, questioning him would be good, but he wasn't entirely happy with this outcome. His hand had started to go up to his shoulder, when Algernon came by, sealing the wound with a touch. The pain had gone. He tested his shoulder a bit afterwards, rolling it carefully. It was as good as new from what he could tell.

Quickly, he glanced around to see where the knife had gone. After fetching it, he wiped the blood off the blade, then put it away.

The doppelganger was now restrained by fire. He was no longer an immediate threat.

He looked to the others briefly, shifting in place.

"Thanks," he uttered begrudgingly. As much as he didn't want to admit it, he needed the help there, and he hated that fact. Where he had failed, Jeremiah had de-masked and subdued the target without much of an issue at all. Was he really that much weaker than the older detective? The thought did not sit well with him.

He snapped from his thoughts when he realized that the doppleganger was running away. Gritting his teeth, he bolted off after him, lunging to try and tackle him to the ground.

"Where do you think you are going?"
