Kaede paused, waiting in the hallway after he knocked. At times, he wondered if the Queen should rest more. He visited often enough that he could assume she rested. However, he always had this feeling like he wasn't doing something right. What would the previous Captain done to serve the Queen and her family? He was doing his best to uphold and serve the kingdom, yet, why was it not right? Why did he still feel off? With all this doubt, he would go straight to the Queen and make sure she was ok. Many a time he pretty much demanded for her to eat. It was an awkward experience, since well, the Captain of the Guard does not usually tell the throne to eat their lunch. However, Kaede didn't know what much else to do.

Upon hearing Ophelia's permission to enter, Kaede opened the door and entered. His eyes were trained to the ground and looked up towards Ophelia. "Pardon if I woke you." he said, noticing she was wearing her typical red cloak. He stayed by the door for a second before standing near the window to give Ophelia some space in case. As the welcome warmth of the sun greeted him, he then decided to continue. "I have a-," he began and then stopped. No, he didn't want to throw it out there so quickly. "Have you eaten yet?" he continued, looking back at her. She still seemed rather distant as before, exhausted and strained. It was strange to Kaede. If she had a hand in marriage with the Emperor and now that guards were brought to the kingdom along with supplies, why wasn't the Emperor here? Though the Emperor would ideally stay in Lionis, there had not been any envoy or official to continue negotiations. From that, it was odd for the Queen to be gone for extended periods. While they maids were not certain of where or why the Queen was gone, Kaede guessed it was for grief or possibly anything related to the Emperor.

Despite telling him so, he was still as polite, still as formal as ever, and the queen could only chuckle ever so slightly and shake her head. "Oh, no. I have long awaken before you knocked upon my door." she waved her hand dismissively as her gaze trailed towards the castle in the far distance. She wondered if she could pay a visit to the ruined grounds some time later into the day. Take a look around the area. There were bodies left untouched, left uncollected and the thought of that would make her face flush pale. Would she see her husband's body there? Would she see her daughter? She shuddered and quickly pulled her gaze away from the horrible view. Instead, her attention would be diverted towards Kaede when he spoke, though it seems his sentences were cut short. Instead of repeating his questions, he'd ask another one. One concerning her appetite. Ophelia simply smiled and although she may be curious as to what he initially wanted to ask, she'd remain silent, assuming he'll ask her once again when the right time comes. For now, she would patiently wait. "No, not quite. I don't have much of an appetite.. I've been rather sickly as of late." why was that? Not even she knew. The Lionis castle had feasts and their food were certainly amazing, however, Ophelia found it unappetizing. It wasn't because it taste horrible, but rather, it was because of her environment. She didn't like her stay there, especially when she'd wind up getting locked in and treated like a lifeless puppet.

"Have you been well? How has everyone been? I haven't seen you all in quite a while." she would ask as she readjusted her robe. She appeared a little thinner than usual and she, too, have noticed. However, she made no attempt to recover, or rather, she couldn't bring herself to. "I do suppose you haven't eaten? I'm sure the maids are preparing something, so why don't you dine in the hall once they're done?"

Kaede frowned. The Queen was sickly lately? Was she getting sick from not taking care of herself? Was her extended periods of absence, most likely for the Lionis Empire, endangering her health? "That is a shame, perhaps a change in diet could help for your appetite? There has been more produce coming in from the empire with variety." Kaede suggested. He caught the Queen staring out towards the ruins of the castle. Did she hope to return? It would be hardly surprising to say the least. Plenty of survivors kept wanting to wander back to the ruins of the once beautiful capital city in hopes to find a miracle. However, it was difficult to say what was a miracle. Some would consider finding survivors a miracle. Others would believe it was a miracle enough that they could recognize some of remains of what they considered home. Maybe he could bring that up, though he didn't want to catch her off guard.

"The people and I have been well. The Lionis Empire guards and healers have been tending to all." he answered, noticing her adjust her robe. Every time, she seemed to become more fragile and worn. Thinner. Even though he had been quite vocal of making sure she ate, it still seemed she was losing weight rapidly. As she offered him to eat in the hall, Kaede's eyebrows raised fractionally. She would give him a meal, but most likely not eat herself "I have not, matter of fact. Thank you, Ophelia, but I will only if you will eat also." he replied with the smallest hint of playfulness, maybe even humor. While he kept to a rather formal, polite, monotone voice, it was just the lightest tilt in his voice that would suggest otherwise.

Sickly, she has been. The queen hasn’t had much of an appetite as of late and she would assume it was simply because of her environment, because she was in a place she didn’t like. However, it appears that even though she returned to her beloved kingdom, her appetite has yet to return. Is it because she had grown used to not eating? Used to not consuming enough food on the daily basis? If that’s the case, the queen has been very, very careless with her own body, especially after how horribly it had been mistreated. It was only after he spoke of a change in her diet that the queen had let out a breath of relief. She had thought she was never going to hear the end of it because apparently, one of her older maids would nag her to the point the queen would finish her food. Ophelia had always felt the pressure whenever her maid would see through the very end, like a mother, she wouldn’t leave until Ophelia finished each and every single bite of her meal. ”Would that really help? I can’t bring myself to eat recently.. I’m not quite sure why. Oh, I would be stricken eith grief if the medics were to tell me my days are numbered.” she breathed a sigh, saying so even though she knew it wasn’t a joking matter. They had a sickness that passed on through generations and Ophelia was always preparing herself for such a day, which is why she had never once took a day for granted. However, with more variety of consumables rolling in from other countries, Ophelia would smile. Her people were getting proper nutrition and she only hoped that they could recover as quickly as possible. She was glad that they’ve been well and that would only make her worry less about her people’s health. She had been wondering if the ashes would take a toll on their bodies. Their air has been very toxic at one point and she was ever so thankful that it had started to clear up. Some of the mines have been dug up and miners finally have the chance to make a living out of it. With that, the kingdom is able to resume with their gem trading activity once more. ”That’s a relief. I’ve been terribly worried that the ashes might have taken a toll on everyone’s health, but I’m glad to know everyone’s doing alright. You, especially. I’ve heard you’ve been helping around a lot. Your efforts are very much appreciated but do not forget to take care of yourself, Kaede.” he was a very hardworking fellow and it wasn’t hard for the queen to tell. She could see it very easily in his eyes, that he was a strong man. One unlikely to give up and she understood very well why he had been promoted. A captain. It was what most of the guards aimed for when they signed up for such a job. The only thing is, Ophelia wondered if he had learned why he was entrusted with such a heavy duty.

Her mismatched eyes widened in surprise when he countered her request. His eyebrow raised, and his voice was still a deep monotone. However, what surprised her was the small hint of playfulness within his voice. He sounded ever so slightly cheeky compared to his usual self. Ophelia found herself pouting, crossing her arms as she let out a small, childish huff. It was different than how she usually carried herself. Rather than with poise and elegance, Ophelia would come off a little more childish than usual. A little more child-like. ”You’re a captain, you can’t skip meals. Just when have you started acting this way. You used to just follow orders, Kaede.” she would glare daggers at him, though she wouldn’t manage to keep up her halfhearted frown for much longer before a soft chuckle would escape her lips, and her eyes would soften. She heaved a small sigh, and she’d walk past Kaede without a single word. Her footsteps would click when she walked down the hallway but before she proceeded any further, she’d turn around, a small pout on her face. ”Fine.. You win this round. If it’s just a little.. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to eat something.”

Kaede nodded in a matter-of-fact sort of way. "Sir Soren would always change the diet of apprentices randomly to be sure we are eating enough with the right nutrients. Too much of the same thing could be a problem." he replied, recalling how one day Sir Soren threw a barely cooked fish onto his and Ian's plates for lunch many years ago. He would never forget what happened afterward. Ian had eaten his share, and immediately said he would never train again. Kaede managed to stomach it to only regret hours later as he realized that his breath smelled like fish for the rest of the day.

"And I hope the medics are not saying that. I feel that hearing such words would be the real cause of numbered days, not because of eating habits." The ashes are much less than before. I have faith that the people can continue, as long as they keep listening to the advice." Kaede continued. As for his efforts, Kaede didn't think so. There was still so much he probably could be doing. But without a mentor or anyone to guide him except for the occasional guard, Kaede felt useless. There was no way he could be doing enough. "Thank you, but I assure you, I am fit as a fiddle." he thanked, once again hiding behind a polite, thankful tone.

"As Sir Ian would say, do as I say and not as I do." he quipped, a glint in his eyes at the childish pout Ophelia gave. It was so different, yet just as charming. Instead of an air of elegance and beauty, there was something softer and sweet. Something that Kaede did not typically think a queen would have. Then again, speaking she was the same person as the princess years ago that guards would gossip about, some part of that childishness would be kept even into adulthood. As she walked into the hallway, he noticed something odd. It was... strange markings on her neck and exposed bruises. Now, Kaede was no idiot or genius, it was recognizable enough. Many a guard would make.. comments about such things. Kaede never exactly engaged in such a way -he was too obsessed with training-, but he knew such a mark when he saw one.

"Thank you, I'll be sure that it will not be a burden." he replied smoothly, his voice slightly flatter all the sudden. As he glanced through the hallways, he noticed the maids rushing around. He could only assume they heard the discussion between the two and were preparing a light lunch at most. Then, he smelled something through the halls. It was obviously something delicious, but he couldn't place what it was. He followed the queen out of her personal room, noticing she was still wearing the cloak. Should he ask? No, she never brought it up. Why should he ask? While he was internally arguing with himself, he failed to noticed that he was angling off while walking and abruptly walked into a wall and hit it with a dull thunk.

Sir Soren. Ophelia recognised that ever so familiar name. A name she hasn’t heard in quite a while. He was strong. A good leader, a kind man. She grieved for his death, knowing the kingdom had lost a good man, knowing his family has lost a very, very loving son. She was glad that there was at least someone who watched their diets, took care of their underlings. ”That sounds wonderful. I do hope he’s in a better place now. He deserves so much better. Much better than our kingdoms.” many people craved for power, many drove mad by greed. They wanted control and she knew how many people had been corrupted over the many years, how they had been swallowed by greed. Bribing. Threats. Ophelia could only heave a small sigh at how most royalties turn out to be. Azazel, especially. A month, she has endured. A month, she has waited for his downfall yet day by day, she was met with disappointment. Her expression would darken for a small second before it returned to normal.

She would shift her gaze towards Kaede when answered, and she would laugh even though there were no humor within his voice. She would laugh simply because she didn’t think he’d answer in such a way, because she didn’t want to bring down the current atmosphere. She wanted to leave her laughter echoing in the hallways before she left. She wanted them to remember her smiles like it once was. The last thing she wanted was for them to see how depressed she had been, how upset she has been. ”Oh, my. Then I suppose it would be much better not to see a medic after all..” she murmured while she made her way into the hall. The strong aroma traveling into her senses. Oh, how it smelled like home. It was a lot different from the food in Lionis. A little bland but it was what suited her appetite, except, she had none at the moment. She would look at the maids, how hardworking they are as they tried their best to prepare the meal. Ophelia would take a plate from their hands, aiding them to place the dishes upon the large table in the dining hall. ”Oh, how wonderful. That might be the best news I’ve heard in quite a while.. You’re all my greatest concern after all. The restoration can wait. Health comes first.” she hummed, seemingly much less tensed than she was earlier. As fit as a fiddle, he would say. Ophelia raised an eyebrow in amusement. As strong as a person may be, there would be a day they fall ill but given how he had countlessly reassured her, she figured there wasn’t anything much to worry about. She trust he’d take proper care of themselves. However, there seems to be quite an amount of surprise awaiting her today. The way he’d counter her once again with a ‘matter-of-fact’ statement. Her heterochromias widened once more and she’d heave a great sigh. Kaede does somehow reassemble the former captain in some way. It was as if Soren was guiding his path and the new captain, slowly following his footsteps. They were both great men and Ophelia would wish him luck. It was a tough job but she suppose he’s strong enough to handle such heavy responsibility. With yet another huff, she’d whine and even though her childish side has yet to surface completely, there were hints of her child-like tendencies. Ophelia’s ability to handle the duty of a queen had often been doubted given her odd personality and she knew there were some who’d doubt her up until today. ”What are you going to do of you were to anger me? I could very well have you locked up.” with her hands upon her hips, she turned to face him, a playful expression slowly surfacing upon her pale features. Of course, even if she has the power to do so, she wouldn’t. Ophelia wouldn’t even hurt a fly, let alone send one of her guards to prison.

Once again, when the queen felt his gaze upon her, she would self-consciously cover her body up with her robe, especially around her neck. It felt a little warm keeping it around her, especially after the small rise in temperature at the ashes that still lingered around. What was she to say if people were to notice? The maids would often times accompany her when she would wash herself, preparing a spare change of clothes for her, help her with her corsets but recently, Ophelia had been doing such things on her own. It would raise suspiscion, and perhaps start rumors and gossips but the queen didn’t have time to pay attention to small matters. She took the main dining seat, gesturing for Kaede to take a seat of his own. ”Is this your first time eating in this dining hall?” asked the queen, her gaze fixed upon the meat on her plate. She would place a small portion of meat into her mouth and savour its taste. It tasted like home, and she missed her dishes so dearly, but once again, she wouldn’t have much appetite to finish the whole plate. It’s such a shame, seeing good food go to waste, and it was then, an idea would strike her mind. ”Do you think it’s a good idea to hold a feast here for the people? I’d like it if everyone can take a break. You look like you can use a break. It has been tiring, hasn’t it?” she directed her gaze to him once more as she took in his features. What time do they awake from their slumber just to tend to their jobs? It must have been equally as tiring for the rest of the people and she figured it was the only way for her to help them. She didn’t know what to do. Ophelia was already tired of sitting around like a doll in a display case.

"Other kingdoms?" Kaede echoed, tilting his head. Ethe never exactly kept any aggressions from what he knew. The most he was aware of was its worsening relationship with Phobos simply because they were a bunch of rude buggers who depended on war and violence for glory and Bellris for their darker magics. As her gaze darkened, Kaede was tempted to put a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Sir Soren is, I'm sure of it. If anyone were to reach a better place, he would." Kaede promised. He could almost hear the aged knight chucking and yelling at Kaede to do fifty push-ups and run around the border of the castle's walls.

Kaede remained quiet once again, still internally arguing whether or not he should ask. But more importantly, what was this strange, burning feeling? It was like his hands, chest, and lungs were on fire. It was almost like the feeling of the day during the eruption. But, obviously, there was no as or lava in here. It was a safe, quiet home in which Ophelia stayed in. Why did he feel this? "If you locked me up, I would sooner drive my guards mad to the point of early retirement with worthless jokes than anything else." he replied, still amazingly keeping his usual monotone voice despite the obvious point of joking. However, it was like small shards that were breaking off. Kaede felt comfortable behind these closed doors. If she could open up to him, he could do that same perhaps. After all, the queen had to know all the sides of her captain, good and bad.

"This is my first time. I tend to eat inbetween patrolling shifts." Kaede responded, sitting down in the seat next to her. As the maids hastened to prepare the meal, he noticed a few from those who had been rescued during missions after the eruption. It warmed him to know that they were much healthier than before and like him, decided to work for a purpose. As she continued to speak however, Kaede's eyes were trained on her as he barely registered the food on his plate as he ate. "A feast would be a great motivation for the people, even a small festival if possible. And yes. It has been tiring." he admitted, hopefully dismissing his horrendous sleeping schedule. However, he didn't stop there. "But not as tiring is for you and your activities."

He drank from his glass and set it down. His eyes downcast for a second, and a new feeling from the burning, sparking situation. It bubbled over. It was like the rain on an overflowing river. The maids have left them in private and Kaede had to know. How did he fail to not notice? How much has this been happening for the past month? How could the Queen do this? Why didn't she tell anyone? Kaede didn't want to mention it directly, but it had to be done. "The emperor.. has been using you, hasn't he?" Kaede finally spoke. He hated saying those words. He hated having to ask this. But, it would explain many things. The queen disappearing. The queen sobbing the day he found her. The queen in pain. The queen in danger.

That's it. That's the feeling. He was angry. He was saddened. He was so conflicted and upset that the fact the queen was facing this on her own. A situation that should not happen. Why or how, he did not know. But one thing is for sure: it should not have happened and still should not happen. And Kaede was pretty close to during marching to the emperor's castle himself and sticking his sword into the emperor's gullet if he could.

                                                                          ▇ ▇▇ ▇▇▇ ▇▇▇▇ ▇▇▇▇▇ ▇▇▇▇▇▇ ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇

                                                                          I'm feeling: Frustrated | I'm with: Kaede Lorent | I have: $700EC

If that was what Kaede thought, then Ophelia had nothing much to complain about. She, too believed that the former captain would be in a much better place, away from any sorts of corruption, away from a world where the strong feed upon the weak. A world were people are treated as tools. She smiled, missing her captain dearly. Ophelia missed all those that perished in the flames, her people, the maids, the guards.. of course, her family. Those who served under her may not be blood related but for her, they were more than family. They were her priority, her people was what kept her moving. "If only there was more time.. if only I had spent just a few more moments with my people.." maybe she wouldn't feel so lost, maybe she wouldn't feel so.. empty. Then again, none could ever prepare themselves for the loss of many lives. No matter how long you have been waiting for its arrival, when it strikes ones whom you care about, it'll always hurt. It'll always feel suffocating. "If anything, I hope they don't feel any pain where they are. I hope all that awaits them is a place full of peace." she often prayed at temples, and she would often pray for her people, for those who have passed on, for those who were sick, who were in mourning. For some reason, she felt responsible. She felt responsible for the pain they were in. If only she was a little stronger, if only she could hold the lava back just a little longer. However, she couldn't. Mt. Adara's wrath was far stronger even with all her people combined.

It was after the captain made a witty remark that Ophelia had finally snapped back into her senses. A soft laugh would escape her lips but she'd quickly cover her lips with her hand as soon as she realized she had lost her usual.. formal demeanor. Then again, when had she ever cared about such things. There was no need to be formal, no need to walk on eggshells. She wanted to be honest and refrain from acting 'high and mighty' like she was supposed to. "I think you may have struck me with a fairly good idea. Instead of taking lives as punishment.. why don't you tell them your.. less than humorous jokes. I think that would be a worse.. punishment." she would laugh, taking another small bite from her plate. Kaede usually has quite a stern looking face and she hardly ever sees him pull any other expressions other than the one he currently has on, and it made her wonder if he was capable of showing any expressions at all. "I hope you don't mind me asking, Kaede. Are you.. capable of pulling other faces-..?" Ophelia hoped he wouldn't take her words to heart. She was simply curious because if she had remembered correctly, she was able to count the number of times she saw him smile throughout this month with just the fingers on one hand.

Eating in between patrolling shifts. Wouldn't that be quite a rush? She frowned, eyeing him with eyes that appeared much more stern than usual. "I will not have you lecture me about my health when you, yourself are eating in a rush between shifts." she crossed her arms, her expression less than amused. "I will have you eat here every single day. You and your guards. The maids, too. Everyone will eat together." with that, she would clasp her hands together, a small smile forming upon her features. Ophelia loved having people gathering for a meal. Her daughter used to love having people around. She made friends with the guard, the maids, and how she would have grown into such a beautiful soul. Such a fair ruler of this world. She downcast her eyes, eventually falling silent as she continued taking small bites out of her meal. Ophelia never had anything worth being proud of and her daughter was the only person that made her feel as if he had accomplished something. Her daughter was her world, but it seems, as Azazel said, Mt. Adara had cursed her to have no family. Her hands were crossed, one above the other, a gesture she had whenever she was upset. However, her expression would light up ever so slightly when Kaede had agreed to a feast. She wanted to make the people feel a little better. She'd nod, her eyes glistening after a long while of being clouded. For those who were sick, those who were unable to attend, Ophelia would make sure to have some food delivered to their house. If anything, she doesn't want to leave anyone out of this. "I hope you're taking proper care of yourself. It's not tiring at all, you're all my priority and after knowing how the people have recovered over the course of a month.. it all feels so.. worthwhile." it made her days a little more tolerable, it made her less disgusted of what she had to go through in order to restore her kingdom. She wouldn't mind if she had to shoulder this burden as long as her people would live a pleasant life, with proper care, a proper environment.

However, her happiness was short-lived until she sensed a slight change in the atmosphere. No. It wasn't the atmosphere. It was.. Kaede. "The emperor.. has been using you, hasn't he?" and her gaze would avert almost in an instant. She wouldn't as much cast a single gaze at him as she took her glass and sipped on her wine. He struck the bull's eye. She had expected anyone to ask her with questions regarding her health, but never regarding the emperor himself. For a moment, she was at complete loss for words, however, she had managed to catch her tongue. She'd force a chuckle, and her fingers would tug on her robe. "Oh, Kaede, where have you gotten such an idea from?" she paused, "What use would I be for him? He has so much power, there is absolutely.. no need to use a person such as I-.." and she'd adjust her robe, making sure it covered most of her body. If she was asked, she'd brush it off saying she's cold but it seems, her body wasn't cooperating with her. There were small sweat drops forming upon her forehead in which she'd casually wipe off when she thought no one was paying attention. "I-.." she'd try to speak but it seems when her mismatched eyes would meet his golden ones, she'd find her words forcefully shoved down her throat. She wanted to speak of her thoughts, she wanted to tell someone, anyone. She'd say she's alright, but her eyes would give her away. Her eyes showed fear.

"You will say nothing to anyone about what happens between us unless it is to say that you are happy. Is that in any way unclear."

Azazel's words rung in her ear, and she'd remember the hands that once strangled her by the neck. She'd remember the way his eyes would flicker maliciously as it trailed her body. She would start trembling ever so slightly, however, she'd say, "I'm fine-.. honest." she answered, her gaze downcast as she forced a smile. She'd subconsciously bite her lip. It was yet another habit of hers.

                                                                          A habit she'd pull whenever she's lying.

Kaede nodded sagely, not even denying his "less than humorous jokes." He knew his sense of humor was a wreck, since in the past, Kaede couldn't even understand the most basics of knock knock jokes. However, the smile was something beyond. It was soft yet beautiful. True, she laughed a couple of times already. However, every time it was like panacea for the pain and emptiness that Kaede was used to. Perhaps it was the fact it was such a stark difference between the cold sadness of every day life. Or was it actually her personal laugh that Kaede was so enchanted by? But no matter what, Kaede could do nothing and just listen to it and have it be forever safe in his memory.

Capable of pulling other faces? Kaede could.. he thinks. Kaede never really did in general anymore. He didn't want to appear weak. He was constantly in public, only having actual private time in his sleep where his dreams would be a turmoil of his emotions. "I do not know," Kaede admitted. "I decided I would not show anymore. Emotions are signs of weakness, and the people need someone they can rely on without question. What captain would I be if my emotions get ahead of my duty?" It was a rather pathetic ideology, but it was just lodged in the fear of not being able to protect the people. He already failed once and he cannot afford to do it again.

The smallest sweat drop comically slid down the side of his face as Ophelia turned the tables and lectured him about his meal plans. It was different; He was used to eating less and rushing around. She was the one who needed to have all her strength up. "Our cases are different." he attempted to argue, but that was set aside at her next line. It slightly alarmed him. There couldn't be enough food supplies to eat in her majesty's home every day with the guards and maids altogether. "Ophelia, that is a bit much.. I think that is a bit much to have all the guards here. All do respect, they are great people but are a rather.. rambunctious group." As she continued about hope, he nodded, relenting in her decision. She'll change her mind eventually. Kaede would bet a fortnight of dawn patrols that she would see just how excited the guards can get.

She's lying.. Kaede thought, as he set his hands in his lap under the table. His grip tightened significantly in his lap. It was too awkward, too forced. The way she was adjusting her robe yet again. His eyes were trained on her, his face still as expressionless as ever. The only giveaway of his emotions was his eyes as he wanted to say something, to believe her even. Maybe he was just a fool and was being paranoid. Maybe she is in a lovely, happy relationship with the emperor and simply had been in his bed or something at the most. As she bit her lip, that was the end of Kaede's rope. She was hurting deep inside and the emperor was grinding his sword into the broken heart of her.

"You are the beacon of Ethe, the land of fire and jewels, the land that was one of the most wealthy kingdoms. You are loved by people that are loyal to you and you alone. Nobody can deny that the emperor would find interest in you, whether it be for political or personal matters." Kaede began. As her different colored eyes shook, Kaede wanted nothing more than to go back to time and change anything. The queen, no, Ophelia deserved better. She deserved to have her loving husband back with her daughter. Not this. As she refused and stared at the table, Kaede knew it. As she trembled, Kaede felt that anger in him stir.

"You need not speak of it. You need not to even look at me. That is why, your wish is my command. If you wish the pain to end, I will do it. If you wish for that person to disappear, I will go and finish them. I will do anything for you, Ophelia, as your captain and friend." he continued. He then reached out and gently touched her fingertips, not quite holding her hand and stopping in case Ophelia had any negative reactions. More bits of his true face was coming out. He was looking at her almost beseechingly, needing to know if he could do anything to change her fate. It was like the day a month ago, when he was scared she was going to take her life. "Please, if there is anything you want. I will do whatever I can to grant it."

Emotions were never a sign of weakness, not to Ophelia, at least. She always thought that it was a strong aspect, to be able to show emotions under these circumstances. They brought people together, the emotional link between one another. It was what made people stronger. Of course, emotions are something that should be controlled, but never hidden. However, despite how she'd think that way, she was doing the exact same thing Kaede was: hiding her emotions. Hiding them behind her calm facade. Her facade that was slowly starting to falter. Kaede was right in some sense, but it made her realize how.. wrong it sounded, but Ophelia wouldn't point that out just yet. "But it is not entirely necessary to keep all your emotions hidden, isn't it?" she would speak in a gentle manner, yet her words were like knives. She meant no harm, but it seemed as if her words sounded rather harsh at the moment. "Oh- forgive me. I don't mean any harm. I was just thinking.. isn't it tiring? Hiding your emotions? Shouldering the grief alone?" because the queen was certainly tired. Despite how she claimed that she'd be alright as long as it was for her people, Ophelia had moments where she thought of quitting, moments where she nearly chose suicide as the answer to her questions. She nearly chose the coward's way out of this life.

When she was locked in the Lionis castle at one point, she wasn't allowed to roam anywhere else. She could only stay in her bedroom chamber, with little to no company. All she had was her thoughts. Her thoughts that were so dark as she gazed out the window, staring at the land of Ethe from afar. She would find herself slowly slipping into darkness, slowly giving herself away. She couldn't deny that she hated her duty as a queen at that point. Why was she born a royalty? She never asked for a kingdom. She never wanted to become a queen. All she wanted was to set foot in different places, set out for an adventure and here she is, day by day, being called into Azazel's bedroom chambers, doing whatever he ordered, whatever he wanted. She was always there to listen to her people's plea, always lending a shoulder to lean on, always carrying their hopes and dreams but soon, she came to realize. Who could she lean on? Who would listen to her pleas? No one. She had no one to lean on. She was the queen, the only royal family. She was supposed to be strong. She had almost given up, almost slit her own wrist in her chamber but it was in that moment, she'd recall the painful cries of her people. The devastation, the children. She'd remember how painful it was to watch her kingdom crumble into nothing but ashes. If she was gone, who could her people lean on? She had to be strong. If not for herself, then for them.

                                                                          "Our cases are different."
"They are not. Do not argue with me." his words snapped her into reality and she'd find herself countering his statement almost immediately.

He wasn't entirely wrong that her ideas were getting a little out of hand but Ophelia was determined to have her way. She'd shake her head in denial, insisting that they should have meals together. She loved the lively atmosphere, and she knew there has been a couple of affairs between maids and guards throughout the many years she had been living within the castle walls. She always felt a little sad that they have little to no chance of spending time together. "Rambunctious? I don't see how that is a problem, Kaede. There is no excuse!" she'd huff childishly. "Is it really impossible? Won't you please..?" her strong front faltered and her whines eventually turned into small pleas. She missed the lively atmosphere the castle once had whenever they held a feast. She missed how people would drink ale together, chug their drinks, sing along while they danced in circles. Those were moments she had only experienced in her childhood. Never again, after she stepped into her adolescence.

There it was again. The lighthearted atmosphere felt heavy once more and Ophelia could see it within the captain's clouded eyes. The anger held within them. He had saw through her facade yet Ophelia stubbornly held onto her strong front, not wanting to falter just yet. She couldn't. She was Ethe's light, as he had mentioned. She couldn't blow her own candle out. She had to be strong. Like she was always taught to be, but when her gaze met his, she found herself unable to. She found her walls crumbling. It wasn't because he came of fearsome, no. It was simply because she had held on for too long. How many years has that been? Nearly two decades perhaps. "Royal marriages have always been.. political. Always for the sake of having descendants for the throne. For the sake of this kingdom, for Ethe, I took the emperor's hand in marriage. He has been nothing but-.." kindness. Why was she unable to say so? She couldn't, because it was a lie she cannot tell. Say nothing except that she was happy? How could she? When the emperor himself treated her as if she was nothing but a mere sex toy. "I'm fine-.. so.." she insisted, her teeth digging into her lips, not enough to draw blood but enough to feel pain. She didn't want Kaede to speak any further, because if he did, she would falter. She didn't want to be reminded of what was happening at the Lionis castle. Ethe was her safe haven, a place she could run away from it all. The last thing she needed at the moment was to speak of her misfortunes. She felt angry, but at the same time, she couldn't bring herself to speak any further. It was when she felt his fingertips touch her, that she finally brought her gaze back to Kaede's. His fingertips, although just the faintest of touch, would make her feel so warm, the warmth she hasn't been able to feel after such a long while. There was coldness to her cheeks all of a sudden, and it was then, she realized, the tears she had been holding back all these while would start to run like a loose faucet. "..Friend..?" she murmured. Her voice was quiet at first, merely quivers and soft whimpers but with his words alone, it soon turned into sobs and her shoulders would tremble greatly. Her body shook and in that moment, she felt her world come crumbling down all at once. The feelings she had been suppressing, the anger she had been holding back, the grudge she had been harboring. "You can't-..! You can't go near the emperor! Don't go anywhere near him! I can't afford to lose anyone else-.. not my people- not you!" she cried out loud, her head lowered in attempt to hide her features. Her quivering fingers would slowly hold onto Kaede's hand as she pleaded, and her free hand would still tightly grasp onto her robe, as if she were afraid of anything more being revealed. "He-.. he threatened to harm my people-.. he threatened to kill them if I refused to become his-.. I thought it would be alright, I thought it would be best if I chose the safe route b-but-.." her hand would eventually let go of her robe and reach for her captain's hand, grasping his tightly within the both of hers. Her robe would come loose, and her neck would be ever so slightly exposed, revealing the markings he so mercilessly left upon her body, the bite marks, the bruises. "I-it's painful-.. Kaede, it's painful-.. I'm tired- I'm scared-.. I don't know what to do- I don't know what else I can do to keep you all safe-.. I'm sorry-.. I'm so sorry-.." she felt guilty. She felt guilty for keeping things from her people, for being dishonest about her current situation. She wanted to help, yet she couldn't do anything. She had a weak body, an even weaker one as of late.

And it seems that's all she'll ever be. A person to trample on. A wilted wallflower.

Tiring wasn't even the beginning of what Kaede really felt. But he could not falter. His eyes remained downcast at she reprimanded him. He did not reply. It was necessary. It had to be. This was not a time for weakness or for him to show his true feelings. If he did, so much could go wrong. Too much in fact. The facade was needed. Without it, Kaede was pretty sure that nobody would recognize the coward he was. The weak, emotional person that wanted nothing more than to step away and disappear into time. It was a mask he was used to having it; it was a mask that he needed now and perhaps forever. He doubted he could even live without it. As silence greeted her questions, the atmosphere just became must darker, colder, lonelier. It was like the night that greeted him as he slipped under his blankets in his tent. It was the veil that he was terrified would be his shroud should it come any time soon.

While she had been kept in the Lionis castle, he had been working tirelessly. He had given the small room in a shared house for the guards to a sickly citizen. Instead, he had been staying in a tent nearby, rejecting any offers to move to a better area. Kaede couldn't bear to rest in a nicer room while there were others who suffered. He couldn't sleep either though. Kaede might as well be working himself to his death, taking as little rest and food he could. He was still strong without, just with a mask on. He flinched as she snapped that their cases were not the same and not to argue. A dozen counterarguments came to his mind, but orders are orders. Do not argue with the Queen.

She trembled even more if that was possible. She was like the last leaf on a tree as the summer turned to autumn. As she trembled, Kaede nodded. He was her commander and friend. No matter the circumstance, Kaede's loyalty was to her first. Then, tears came down her face as she cried, no, pleaded that he not go after the emperor. As she clasped his hands, Kaede instinctively cupped her hands as much as he could. Hearing her words just made Kaede angrier. The emperor threatened the people to just bed her? It sickened him. How could such a man touch the person whom they all looked up to in such.. No, he could not question it. There was no doubt; the emperor is a monster that needed to be cut down.

When she let go of the heavy red cloak, Kaede then saw the bruises and markings along her neck and inevitable across her body. Fury seethed through Kaede, wanting nothing more than do somehow raise the dead and bring all the spirits and monsters to go tear down the empire. However, he could not. All he could do... Kaede then got out of his seat and gently wrapped his arms around her, gently and delicately. It should be her husband holding her like this. It should have been the past King who would make such marks on the Queen. It should have been King WIlliam who would keep the Queen safe and happy, not this. "No, there is nothing to apologize for." he replied gently, yet firmly. "You did what you thought was best to keep us all safe. Now let me keep you safe."

He let go, the mask completely taken off. Finally, he saw Ophelia without anything but for who she was. She was a woman he cared about, more than he should. But, her happiness was his. And her pain and suffering that he was so blissfully unaware of should not even exist. The source of her pain and suffering was still there and Kaede wanted to get rid of it. Or at least, better the circumstances if he could. "Ophelia, we- I care about so much, so please, if there is a way that can rid of all this pain, I will find it for you." he continued.

OOC | Alright, story time. So, sorry for the late reply. I was downright sobbing when reading your post. Just Ophelia's pain and suffering, like oh my gosh. I made a couple drafts for my post because I just couldn't decide what was best. Lemme tell you about the half box of tissues I used throughout these past days to reply. You are an amazing writer!!xxxxxxxxx

She cried as hard as she could, not bothering if her voice could be heard from the outside. She was hurt. She was in so much pain and she had no one to talk to, to vent to ever since she took on the role as a queen. She couldn’t. Who could she complain to when she was forced to become a queen? Who could she complain to when she was forced into an arranged marriage with William? It wasn’t an unhappy one, but it certainly wasn’t what she wanted. She wanted nothing more than to be free, nothing more than to spread her wings in the sky, but she was born with a chain on her feet. She was born behind the cold metal cages, only ever admiring the sky through the small windows. Perhaps that was why she craved death so much at one point, because it was the only way for her to be free, for her to soar as high as possible. To be one with the sky, the wind, to let it bring her to places she was never allowed to go, to discover. She couldn’t deny that there were many moments she chose death over her people. She couldn’t deny that there were moments she chose to murder the emperor in his chambers, but what would that make her? A coward? She had no right to take the life of others, not even the life of her own. Azazel has children and she understood what it felt to lose a child. It was the same for them, perhaps. To lose their father.

Her mind would wander off on its own every now and then, imagining things of what might be, what might have been if she was just a little stronger, if she could just match up. Had she always been so prideful as the emperor once told her? Was she prideful to reject his hand in marriage? Did she have no right of her own? Did she have no right over her own life? It was unfair. Life was unfair. It robbed her of her own family, and now, it robbed her of the only thing she had left. Her dignity.

She was grateful to have Kaede around at the moment. His hands were so warm in comparison to hers. They felt so full of life, so.. humane, and in his hands she found comfort. She didn’t care if her robe had fallen, if her bruises were to be noticed. All she craved at the moment was the warmth of a person’s hand. The warmth she had been unable to feel over so many years, and as if Kaede could read her mind, Ophelia felt a strong pair of arms around her body, engulfing her in a sense of warmth that overwhelmed her. She felt like a child in her father’s arms. She remembered how he’d hold her whenever she had nightmares, and that was the warmth she needed, a warmth that not even William was able to provide her. That was the warmth that Kaede was providing her: the sense of protection. Was he not disgusted with her actions? Was he not disappointed with what she has done? The queen would return the embrace, her fingers clutched tightly onto the fabric of his clothing while she buried her face in his shoulders. She wasn’t as strong as people thought she was. She wasn’t as high and mighty as people thought she would be. With all her status removed, she was only a woman. She was only ‘human’. She wasn’t a statue, neither was she a sculpture. She has feelings, emotions, and she was very grateful for her captain to acknowledge such aspects. She was grateful to have a friend. ”Thank you-.. Thank you for not being upset over what I have done-.. Thank you for being a-.. A friend- thank you so much, Kaede- If you weren’t here.. If you weren’t here, I would’ve-..” she would’ve took her own life. In some sense, Kaede was her savior. Kaede was her anchor that held her to reality. It was after he pulled away that she had felt the cold air that grazed her skin, and she’d bring her arms around her own body, as if to cover them up. She felt so dirty, so disgusted. She felt so.. humiliated.

”..care?” they cared. He cared. The queen had been so clouded by her own problems that she had failed to realize that she wasn’t required to be strong all the time. Her people was something she could fall back on whenever things had gotten a little too hard. Her people was her strength, and all these while, she had been depending on her own. However, with her current situation, she couldn’t depend on anyone. She couldn’t put their lives at stake. If there’s anything they could do, anything Kaede could do..

Ophelia held his hands within hers, snifling in attempt to stop her tears as she spoke. ”Promise me you won’t do anything rash.. Promise me you’ll stay away from the emperor. Promise me, Kaede, that you wouldn’t harm Azazel. Promise me-..” she murmured, keeping her voice as stern as possible despite how much quivering there was within her vocals. From his hands, she’d move to his cheeks, cupping them ever so gently as her mismatched eyes finally met his gaze once more. ”Is it alright.. if you lent me your shoulder..? Your ears..? Is it alright for me to depend on you-..? Because as long as you’re around to keep me company from time to time.. I know I’ll be able to pull through, no matter how hard it gets-.. I know it’s a lot to ask- and I’m sorry for dragging you into this mess when you’ve been dealing with so much yourself-..” her eyes were red and swollen, her tears that dried upon her cheeks left trails in their wake and there was no doubt she looked horrendous at the moment, but the queen didn’t care. For once, she wouldn’t mind appearing vulnerable. Finally, for once, she’d admit she wasn’t as strong as she thought she was. She had long reached her breaking point.

Kaede was surprised when Ophelia returned the embrace, burrowing her head into his shoulder and clutching his clothes tightly. She seemed almost smaller, almost like a child. However, this was still Ophelia. It was simply a different side that she could not show. It finally clicked. She was wearing a mask and keeping up a mask as much as he was. He stroked the back of her head as she continued to cry and thank him. "I would never by upset by your actions. I will always be here for you, just as your husband and daughter are too." he promised.

As she held his hands and tried to stop the tears, Kaede looked at her with a strange feeling. He cared for her so much. "I promise I won't." he finally replied, as much as he secretly disliked the order. Then, her hands traveled to his face, making him focus on her and her alone. Her eyes were red, swollen, still gleaming in their unique colors. He couldn't look away. Appearance wise, she may have looked terrible. But as Kaede felt tears crawl down his own face, blurring his vision, he never thought he has ever seen a more beautiful, lovely, and strong person before. "Yes, I will lend you my shoulder, ears, and strength. There is nothing to apologize for. I am here for you to grant you protection and happiness." he answered.

They were close enough that Kaede could smell the soap she used. He could see the tears glistening on her eyelashes. He could hear the screams of pain and fear in her heart. Kaede took her hands and held them in his, leaning forward. He then kissed the crown of her head, trying to reach out and reassure to her. They both have been fighting overpowering feelings of crying and wanting to die. "If you fall down, I will be right by your side and bring you back up. You're not alone. You never were, and you never will be. As long as I breath, I will be here for you." he promised, tenderly putting a hand on her cheek and wiping the trail of tears.

He hated it. He hated having these feelings, yes, at the same time, he loved them. No, he had grown to love Ophelia despite all of this. All this time, checking on her, making sure she was ok. It was more than duty. He genuinely worried for the Queen, but it was also so much more. He cared for Ophelia herself. Her kindness and dedication. Her smile and laugh. Her ability to care for the people and to extend a hand despite all circumstances. Yes. Despite all his attempts to sever all emotions and thoughts, he still had somehow fallen for her for who she was. And he shouldn't.

We all know that our time in this world is limited, and that eventually all of us will end up underneath some sheet, never to wake up. And yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know. It is like walking up the stairs to your bedroom in the dark, and thinking there is one more stair than there is. Your foot falls down, through the air, and there is a sickly moment of dark surprise as you try and readjust the way you thought of things.❜

She could feel his fingers gently stroking the back of her head, and she’d find comfort in his actions. His touch was gentle and it somehow terrified her. Azazel had been gentle with her at first. He was so.. so gently before he became what he was, before he revealed what he was. Even though she knew Kaede wouldn’t harm her in any way at all, even so, the queen was already scarred. She was scarred by what happened and no matter what form of gentleness she was met with, she would be afraid to accept it. When her husband and daughter was brought up, her body would freeze, but she would find herself calming down eventually. ”Where do you think people go after they die..? Can they still see you? Because.. I can’t feel them at all. Not William,.. Not even Cheza.” but even so, she was sure that they would be laughing at her for crying in such a moment. Why was she robbed of her source of happiness? She only wanted a pleasant life with her family, that was all, nothing more. All she wanted was to see the laughter upon her daughter’s face when she stepped into the great outdoors. Cheza was exactly like Ophelia when she was much younger. They didn’t want to shoulder the responsibility of ruling this kingdom but one thing was for sure. Cheza matured a lot faster than the queen ever did. She acted like an adult given her age. If she was still around, the queen was sure that her daughter would whine about how weak she was being, how she was causing trouble. She always had a sweet tongue and Ophelia loved that aspect about her. An aspect the queen lacked. Kaede’s deep voice would once again snap her back to her senses, and she’d gaze at him through her blurred field of vision. It was until he gave her his promise only did she loosen ever so slightly. Her shoulders would slump, and she’d nod her approval. She didn’t want to lose anyone else, not to natural causes, and most definitely not through the hands of Azazel.

His golden orbs would glisten and what came next shocked her to the fullest. Her captain who showed little to no emotions would have tears trickling down the sides of his face, leaving a trail of wet marks upon his cheeks. Ophelia felt horrible, she felt responsible for his tears. Should she have not brought it up? Should she have kept it all to herself instead? His words felt so reassuring, and she’d feel the warmth on his fingers that were tightly clasped onto hers. ”I’m sorry for burdening you with such tasks when you already have so much on your plate..” she murmured, eventually resting her head upon his shoulder. She felt so heavy, her body felt so heavy and somehow, he seemed to be the comfort she was seeking for. The comfort of a trusted companion. She’d pull a small fabric from underneath her robe, and she’d reach forth and gently dry his tears. She could feel the weight of the liquid that trickled out his eyes. No. In fact, everything felt heavy in general, and she found herself unable to walk any further, unable to carry on. ”I shouldn’t be acting this way.. should I? What am I even doing, pushing my problems onto you when you have so much on your plate. You don’t have to be here all the time, it’s alright. I just wanted someone to talk to-.. that’s all. Is that.. too much t-” and she paused, feeling something warm pressed against the top of her head. All of a sudden, everything went blank, and her mind couldn’t process anything at all. She’d lift her head, gazing at her captain as her tears woukd once again trickle down her cheeks. She felt so cared for, and to be honest, she hasn’t felt that way since she was a child. No, she hardly felt that way at all. She was taught to be strong, to not falter at all. She was a ruler and she needed to act like one, but when would they realize that Ophelia was just a normal person like any other? She wasn’t mighty judt because she was a ruler. No. She was never mighty. It was only a status that so selfishly divided her from the rest of her people. She tightened her grip around his hands, and she’d ask a question she doubted he had the answer to. ”I don’t want to go back-.. I don’t want to go back tonight- I’m scared, Kaede-.. what do I do? I’m scared..”

Kaede couldn't answer her question. As she froze, he stilled his hand and briefly thought if he should let go. He was not William, as much as he would have wished. He had to push aside these feelings if he could. "I do not know, but they are with you." he rasped, placing his hand over his own heart. After all, that would explain the warm feeling that always came from her. "Like how Sir Soren and Ian are watching over me, William and Cheza are watching over you too." It felt strange saying the King's and Princess's names without their honorary titles, but it was not too important for now. He'll apologize to their royal highnesses later for the lack of respect; His greatest concern was to be sure that Ophelia would be ok. Somehow, she became a source of happiness for him. While it was impossible to stay be her side in any other way except for as her commander, just knowing that he could support her was enough for him. As she slumped slightly relaxed, he was afraid that all these words would just make her cry more. Was he really comforting her at this point?

"Stop apologizing; It's not your fault and I don't want you to shoulder these burdens alone." he muttered, holding her dearly and trying all his most to stop the tears. He wanted to protect her and grant her happiness, but how could he if he was so weak? "You can act any way that is true to you. You are not pushing your problems on my if I am happily going to stand here and listen. Talking to me is never too much." It time would stop now, Kaede was not sure if he could handle it. When she had wiped his tears with her piece of fabric, Kaede was spellbound. Ophelia was accepting him for who he was and finding it as her fault. No, he was here for her. He would never be like her family, but he could himself. He wiped his tears, a look of newfound determination across his face.

That question, Kaede did not know yet again. Yet more questions he could not answer for her. However, there was something desperate for him to say. "Then don't." He then took her hand and led her out of the dining room and into the hallway towards the entrance of the abode. "That monster would not miss you for one night. You can feign sickness. Tonight, you'll go anywhere you wish: the mountains, the sea, the Maude, anywhere. You can explore a land, go pray, sing, scream; Anything you want to do, you can do. I will go with you and protect you, even if the emperor rains down hell, I will protect you." He then saw several cloaks hanging near the front. While the heavy red cloak was abandoned in the dining room, Kaede then took a rather dull colored cloak to set on her shoulders.

"If we go now before anyone knows you are gone, we can go anywhere. We could go to the ends the world in Zalto if we wished. The guards can protect the people, they can cover us in the absence. If you could go anywhere or do anything, Ophelia, what is it?" Kaede continued.
