Rob accepted Ernst's hand up and dusted himself off once he was back on his feet. "Thanks," he nodded, still embarrassed by his fumble. "Yeah, it wasn't exactly my idea of fun, you know?" Still, it could have been worse -- he could have hit his head on the speaker and really done some damage to himself.
He went to pick up the speaker, only to have it slip out of his grasp a short distance away. "What the…" Kneeling to pick it up again, he slipped and nearly fell again. "Guess I went down harder than I thought. Maybe I better sit down…"

Diryas was so glad to have something new to do that he had to tell himself to slow down as they moved toward the Black Diamond ski slope. Skiing was not something he could say he'd ever tried, and, to be honest, he wasn't terribly keen on starting now. Luckily--in a way--they were doing almost the precise opposite of skiing. Of course, their part of Maryland never got a terribly deep cast of snow, never anything more than half a foot or so, but he supposed there was a first time for everything.
Precise opposite, though... was that the right term? Or would it be the accurate opposite? Was it an accuracy issue or a precision issue? Could quantitative analysis even be applied to an amorphous concept like whatever the opposite of skiing would be?
He was getting off-topic. He forced himself and his train of thought back on topic by checking where Zebulon was and then grabbing the speaker--of course giving a silent nod of greeting to the other Chosen already there. His arms did not go around it, and it upset his center of balance quite a bit to be carrying something so large. However, he could at least carry it and he was at least proud of that bit there. Diryas was not a tall or brawny man, and chemistry was not a terribly physical branch of the physical sciences.
He surprised himself, however, by how far he was able to carry it. Not as far as he'd seem some of the others manage--he'd been watching as he and Zebulon got closer--but a fairly respectable effort in its own right. He'd take it, and maybe he could do better the next time it was his turn to haul it along the slope.

Brynn's idea was definitely a good one, but there was only one problem with mining him as someone to help out...
Zebulon wasn't exactly built for hefting heavy things around.
He wasn't scrawny, or anything, but he wasn't exactly muscled, either. A career of science had left him with an average-at-best body, especially considering that there were sometimes weeks at a time where Zebulon had barely left his labs. Exercise? What was exercise? He'd rather keel over some complicated formulas and chemicals...
Even getting up to where the speaker was currently sitting was a bit of a struggle, and Zebulon held up a hand dramatically as he put his hands on his knees and heaved out a couple heavy breaths. This cold wasn't exactly helping matters.
After watching Diryas haul the speaker up a bit of a ways, Zebulon decided that his best way to move this speaker up himself was probably to throw his weight into it. Turning his back to the speaker, he pushed himself against it and backed up, managing to push the speaker up quite a bit before he inevitably slipped down and fell on his behind in a rather undignified manner.
"Well."

Today was just not Rob's day. Ernst shook his head in sympathy and raised a hand in greeting at the two newcomers. "Sitting wouldn't be a bad idea," he commented, shaking his head out. The newcomers were doing quite a bit better: probably because they were just freshly here. Ernst would let them do their thing as he kept shoveling. It wasn't heavy lifting, sure, but he was still doing the work of climbing up this hill.
Of course, it was then that he noticed that one of the guys had fallen again. s**t - at least he'd gotten pretty far? In all honesty, if Ernst was still lifting the speaker, he might be one of the ones falling. Okay, no, he wasn't that clumsy. But he'd definitely be likely to drop the speaker, which would be a problem considering they were on a slope. Slopes were not pleasant.

Tara winced as Rob went down. Again. "Do you need to take a minute? Or ten?" She tried to add a laugh in, attempting to bring in some humor but was getting nervous about how he was faring. "Did you eat anything at all?" They'd had some soup at the meeting when Brynn proposed the plan, but she was beginning to wonder if he'd gotten enough food and rest period for all this.
Of course, she flushed a bit to hear that she might be the only one remotely excited about where they could potentially next be sent. But the other guy who'd been helping Rob up had a good point. "Maybe next time there'll be more advanced warning? I might look into packing an emergency leave bag with some basic clothes and stuff in it... just to grab and go if there's not any advanced warning, like this time."
Tara waved to the two new people joining them--they were getting pretty far up the slope now, and the more people to help? The better. When one of the new guys slid onto his bum, Tara offered him a hand up before moving in to shove the speaker from below, putting her weight into it. Unfortunately for her, she started to slip, and had to catch herself before she face planted like Rob into the snow. Instead, she just caught herself a bit awkwardly and when she stood, she shook her hand, trying to work out the sparks of pain in her wrist. "Getting up there at least... more than half way!"

Having helped with two slopes, Davor wasn't about to stop there. He'd warmed himself up for the more difficult ones, though perhaps it didn't count so much as a warm-up as a wear-down considering how sore he was. That was the strange thing he'd never really been able to get used to -- no matter how much the rest of him hurt, his amputated arm hurt the most. Not the residual limb left; it was as if his arm was still there and paining him. Their respective gods' blessings could make their battle scars feel like nothing, but it wasn't much of a help here.
Davor set that thought aside and pushed through the pain as well, trudging his way up the slope. Seems the other Chosen had made good progress, but he wasn't so late that his help would be useless. Good! Nodding to a few familiar faces he spotted -- and how nice that some other Chosen were starting to become familiar -- he joined the moving group and lent some of his muscle, hefting the speaker forward with a powerful shove.

The short, black-haired girl had a good idea. Prepping a bag for the worst, in case they were called upon again...yeah, it'd be kind of shitty, but Ernst would like to have a change of underwear, at least, if not proper supplies for the area. Also, some preserved food that was actually good, instead of the Spam that he'd ended up deep frying with crushed crackers for breadcrumbs. A nice, locally-sourced jerky, perhaps? "Maybe it'd be better to just carry it everywhere," he said, shaking his head with a smile. They certainly hadn't had time to duck back into their dorms when they'd been called out for this. Still, he liked the thought of it.
Even if it was kind of unnerving that they could be called out at any time. What if they were away - at some sort of event? A lot of people had outside jobs, and no one had said they'd be living at the camp for eternity. An emergency duffel - or briefcase? How much stuff would he need? - would be a good idea, though. He looked back again when she announced that they were halfway, which was true.
Surprisingly. They actually might be a lot closer than halfway, but Ernst couldn't really tell how much farther their destination was - there was just, well, a lot of height below them. Maybe it'd be better to crawl up this damned mountain, except that his pants were not watertight. The sight of Davor and his very muscular arm was a boost to his morale, though. They could handle this together, certainly. And everyone else could come, too.

Part of Zebulon wanted to just stay sitting, because this slope was hellish, but he gave a sheepish grin and took the hand that was offered to him. "Thanks."
He took a quick glance over to file some facts away about the one who had just helped him out, before getting out of her way so she could heft the speaker around herself. He waited next to Diryas, crossing his arms not in an attempt to look standoffish but in an attempt to keep some more heat in--did he mention he really hated the cold yet?--and watched how far some of the others managed to push it along.
"An emergency bag isn't a bad idea," remarked Zebulon, as he leaned in a bit towards Diryas. Maybe he could stuff one of his old college backpacks full of a few useful things. He tended to carry one around anyway, just not usually with survival gear in it. A few useful things, sure, like a paracord flint bracelet--
But why would he need survival gear?
When his body stopped angrily aching, which honestly didn't take much time at all much to his chagrin, Zebulon walked back up to the speaker and attempted to push it up once again. This time he caught himself before he slipped, which also meant he didn't push it up quite as far, but a quick glance downwards confirmed they were definitely moving this up a ways.

Diryas wasn't really any more physically fit than Zebulon--that was to say, not at all--but he did at least have the bonus being lower to the ground. Being shorter meant his center of gravity was lower. That meant he could focus more of his regrettably mediocre physical strength on the speaker's center of mass without having to lean down and without having to worry about straining his back as much.
Well, theoretically.
Of course, the fact that they were pushing it uphill rendered a lot of that inconsequential. Now, Diryas was almost too low, and he found himself having to rock up on his toes, depending on the specific inclination where he was standing, to prevent it from toppling on top of him. He was missing a warm blanket and someone to bundle under that blanket with.
He glanced over at Zebulon, checking on him as he eked out what progress he could. He hadn't fallen this time, but tendon injuries did not require a full tumble. Diryas made note to ask him about it later, in private, where Zebulon was more likely to admit to any soreness in the first place, much less treat it. He was only superficially paying attention to the conversation around him, focused on the task at hand and not being terribly talkative to begin with. He did instinctively like the one who had helped Zebulon up, and he was at least interested in the other Chosen around them. However, he figured that, if he was going to talk, it could happen later. When they were done.
Speaking of done, Diryas was done. He'd only shoved it another couple feet, but it was enough for his foot to slip out from under him. He whacked his knee on the speaker going down and fell back, hissing slightly under his breath in pain. Rejoining Zebulon, he figured it was someone else's turn, now. At least he could observe more of the conversations this way.

The others were really making some headway with the speaker, with more people coming to help. Rob was happy for this, even though he felt like a complete loser for bobbling it the last couple of times he'd tried to move it further up the slope. It was so embarrassing. Yeah, sure, the slope was pretty steep and not the nice smooth incline the Intermediate Trail had been, and the speaker was big and very bulky, but that was no excuse. Hell, he'd dragged his amp up and down stairs in the BART system and not fallen on his bloody face -- surely he could manage this!
"Right," he announced as he approached the speaker. Leaning over, he decided to shove instead of lift; it was easier with the incline of the slope. He managed to get it a little bit further before stopping. At least he hadn't slipped and fallen this time. That felt like a victory.

Tara made a face at the notion of having to carry the bag around everywhere... but it was true, they'd really had no chance to get to their dorms when they had to leave this time. "That probably would have to be the best solution, unless we can get lucky and have more warning next time."
Well, it was something at least to make things potentially more bearable. When Rob moved back from the speaker, Tara tried her luck to push it up a bit further--and really that's as much as she was able to get. A bit. She slipped after a little distance, but managed to right herself up before she hurt herself, so bonus there. Looking up towards the top of the slope... yeah, definitely almost there. It just seemed like everyone was dead tired and dead done from this whole endeavor.

As usual, Davor did not jump into the conversation going on around him, the kind of guy to speak only when spoken to, and even then... Anyway, he seemed content to focus on the work of moving the speaker, though he might have been pushing himself too much too soon again, his good arm trembling and his prosthetic arm straining with the weight of it. Frustrated, Davor back off, shaking out his aching arm with a graduated huff. They were so close; he didn't want to start exhausting himself now.

This slope was just so steep! It would make carrying anything up the hill a challenge, let alone a bulky speaker that only seemed to grow heavier the more progress they made. She strained against the mass of the thing as she pulled it a little further up the slope.

They were close, so close. Stepping up to take her turn, she began to push the stereo further to the place it needed to be. A huff escaped as she felt exhaustion seep into her limbs and she moved away. Only steps away but she had done what she could.
"We're almost there. Just another push or two," she tried to rally the others.

Ah, it seemed Marisol's encouragement did the trick. Davor felt himself quickly warming up to her, and, ignoring the sharp aching of his muscles, he once again lifted the speaker and drove it forward, finally reaching the top of the slope to set the damn thing down for good.
