A muffled laugh came from the blankets and pillows under which Cas had burrowed in his sleep. He stretched out across the bed and as Jo left the room, one arm emerged from underneath the covers to feel around fo his boxers. He wanted to be polite.

Finally rolling out of bed and pulling on the boxers, he rose and followed her into the kitchen, where he leaned against a counter and watched her move to the music.

"I'll be good this time, I promise," he said, with a wolfish grin that suggested otherwise. "I can help."

"I didn't bring you home to behave, Cas," she replied without a slight glance to the side, starting to add bacon to a hot pan, a flicker of a grin surfacing. "But if you want to help, I wont turn you away." She motioned to the kitchen - it wasn't large, but functional - adding, "Pick your poison, handsome."

When the bacon was laid out, she abandoned it to approach him, running her hands over his stomach as she leaned against him. "You can play along or start something new. I don't have a lot to pick from, but you've more than earned your choice." Another grin, a playful wink. "Don't burn anything though, I'm starving and will hold you personally responsible."

He watched with very real hunger as she laid the bacon into the pan, glad that they had forgone a fifth round for food instead. Sex was great, but food was... arguably better, especially when he was hungry, and there were few things in the world that made Cas as happy as a good piece of bacon.

"I'll play along," he said, sliding his hands under her shirt to wrap around her and trace a line down her back. Whatever Jo was making smelled good. Probably because there was bacon in it. "I'm glad Rylan sent you my way. How do you know each other, anyway?"

She hummed softly as his fingers traced a now familiar path up her back, leaning against him in earnest before pressing a brief kiss to his collar bone. "Very good." Jo started to pull back, but paused at the question, lifting her brows. "I'm glad too. I may or may not have threatened him if you weren't as advertised. Lucky for me, you are more than even his glowing regard implied. Way more."

Pulling away then, she went back to mind the bacon, glancing over to him and motioning he could take over if he wanted. "He's an Ashdown hero, everyone knows Ry. I met him at a bar, myself, recognized him from pictures in the paper and bought him a drink." Satisfied with the sizzling pop of the meat, she plucked an avocado off the counter along with a knife, cutting around its edge.

"How about you guys? You two seem fairly opposite, but obviously you're close." An amused chuckle escaped her; it wasn't that she knew Cas well enough, but what she did know was enough to find entertaining. "And how long do we get the honor of keeping you?"

"That's high praise," he said, his hand sliding reluctantly off her as she made her way back to the stove. "And in your shoes, if there was anyone in Ashdown I'd buy a drink for, it'd probably be Ry."

A moment passed in which Cas watched the bacon sizzle in the pan. Then he followed Jo to the counter and reached for the eggs. Nothing in the world could sound more delicious than eggs scrambled in bacon grease. He rooted around for a bowl, and went to work cracking the eggs, one in each hand, rapping them against the side of the bowl.

"We rowed together in college," Cas added, taking a fork methodically to the yolks and poking them. "Lived in the same house three of those years. We didn't get along at first. He probably thought I was too..." He paused, looking for the right word. "He was like the Iceman to my Maverick, but less dickish. Just thought I looked out too much for myself to do the team any good. Wasn't wrong, really."

"He's a good man," Jo agreed amicably, reaching for her phone and shooting off a text to the man in question: I owe you so many beers. Her eyes flit from the screen to Cas, watching him move around the kitchen, finding things he needed. There was something insanely attractive about a man unafraid to cook. Especially shirtless.

Putting the phone back down, she continued to cut the avocados by habit more than focus, a clean slice around it to split it in half and smacking the teeth of the knife into the seed to remove it. "He one of the ones that challenged you at pool, or life in general?" she asked in vague amusement, piecing the story together. "Nothing wrong look out for number one. I'm sure it's s**t on a team, but there wont always be a team. There'll always be yourself to deal with, though."

A few more slices and the green flesh was removed from its coarse shell, tossing the latter in the trash. "Besides, you can't really hold anyone responsible for themselves until they're like, twenty three. We all have our learning phases, mm?" She held the trash open for him and the eggshells, swaying a little again as the music changed into another mild uptempo beat.

"The best," Cas said, setting down the beaten eggs to dice some onion and green peppers. He'd be the first to admit that he himself didn't always qualify as a "good man." There'd been too many moments in his life in which he'd been flighty, hotheaded, irresponsible, ungentlemanly. But Rylan was different, and he'd fight anyone who tried to say that the firefighter was anything but supremely decent. Reputation be damned.

"He does both." The words brought another smirk to Cas' face. "He's always the voice of reason, you know? I've learned a lot from him. At least enough to know I'll never be as good a person as he is."

The bacon crackled invitingly in the pan. Cas found a plate and carefully moved the strips over to let them cool, then pushed the diced vegetables into the pan, listening as they began to sizzle in the bacon fat.

"I guess Ry just got his s**t together before the rest of us did," he added as he stirred the vegetables in the pan. "He was more mature at 18 than I am now, probably. But his point, I think, was that we have this team of guys who'd lay down in traffic for each other and would be that way forever if we'd all buy into it. I learned that the hard way."

Jo felt like she was in a state of perpetual amusement with Cas - he always managed to surprise her, and now, after a long night and morning, they were talking about Rylan. It was quite possibly one of the most unconventional situations she'd found herself in.

"I can't pretend to understand that," she said with a lilt of apology. "Laying down all you are for someone else." Especially for a sports team. She shrugged, the off-shoulder sleeve sliding a bit further down her arm with the gesture. "I get it more from a -- I don't know, fortification stand point? Survival? Relying on others doesn't come easily or naturally, I don't think. Some people are meant to run together and some are just naturally lone wolves." It was probably a little obvious which she considered herself.

She was quite content to watch him work by then, leaning against the stretch of counter he wasn't working at. "But, now he's got the Lucky 13 and a gaggle of a town that look up to him, so he must have done something right."

"It's not an easy thing to understand," he said in agreement. "Some things just beat it into you. The team, the Marine Corps. It's hard not to trust people who have literally held your life in their hands."

Cas would argue that he was a better man for it, but he also understood that relationships like that didn't come along all the time. These were special people under special circumstances, and he knew better than to think that everyone in the world would be the same way.

Rylan, on the other hand... while not naive enough to think that everyone was that generous, seemed to think that people in general were good. The firefighter loved the masses in a way that Cas never could.

"He's just... different," Cas said with a shrug while dumping the eggs into the pan over the sizzling vegetables. "He'll lay his life down for anyone. And I'd say he'll get hurt one day, but he does it with no expectation that anyone will repay him.

"Anyway. Great guy," he said, looking up from the eggs with a smile. "While these are cooking, do you want anything else?"

As he talked and mixed the goods, Jo grabbed an additional egg and cracked it on the side of the pan, letting it cook while Cas tended the veggies. She listened, glancing between him and the egg, nodding a little at his words. "Let's hope it never comes to pass. If I have to visit him in the hospital, I will drown him in cookies." She probably wasn't joking.

Green eyes turned back to him at the words, a coy smile answering the question in the way she wouldn't give words to. Not while food was cooking, anyway. "I was going to make some bites for brunch, but now I'm more intrigued by what you're doing." She took a moment to ghost her hand over his side, nails dragging slightly over his hip as she nonchalantly put the soft egg out over an english muffin. Cas was far too fun to tease, and after their initial meeting, she was going to get the most she could out of the man's presence.

"I don't have any potatoes, or I'd dice those for us too." Putting the pan back down over a burner that wasn't on so it could cool, she swapped the hand on his side so she could stand behind him, peeking around his arm. "You still want pancakes? I'm not sure how inclined you are to share the food," she teased.

Cas grinned, though whether it was from her touch or her words, it was hard to tell. "He wouldn't thank you for that," he said. Which was exactly why it seemed like a fantastic idea.

The plastic spatula in his hand glided back and forth across the pan, stirring the vegetables. Turning down the flame, he set the pan aside to cool a moment before pouring in the scrambled eggs. A little spice in his food never hurt, but today he seemed content to let the bacon fat do its job.

"I'm making what will probably turn out to be an omelette that smells a lot better than it tastes," he offered, turning to watch her, still until she'd put the egg safely onto the english muffin and then he reached out and grabbed her by the fingertips and pulled her back to land a kiss atop her head.

"Joey doesn't share food," he said, face serious for a moment before he shook his head again. "Nah, I'll eat anything. You can have this too if you want."

A soft snort returned the words. "Nor would he have any say against it. Death by cookies - it could be worse." Nevermind they were making light of the very real possibility Rylan would end up hurt some day - she'd not be surprised, but damn if she wouldn't ruin him the best way she knew how.

Jo made a delighted sound as she pressed against the taller man, smiling up at him. He was just the perfect height that they had a nice fit about them. "You should have let me make it for you! Hello, it's my job to bake. I know cooking isn't the exact same thing but I really do make a mean omelet." She rest her chin against the top of his chest, wrapping her arms around his middle, her back to the oven. "Suit yourself."

The comment made her blink, laughter following soon after, turning her head so she wasn't laughing up in his face. "Great, I'm gonna have to binge watch that again. Thanks." Pressing a kiss to his chest, she shook her head and smiled up at him again. "You can have you good smelling omelet. I'll be good with my bite. It doesn't seem like much but with the avocado and bacon and goat cheese, it works for me.

Besides." She playfully swatted him on the backside. "You cooking shirtless is feeding a different appetite. Not sure I'm patient enough for pancakes at this point." She fixed him with a grin before letting him go, doing a little hop to turn back towards the oven and assemble her english muffin with the aforementioned ingredients.
