'My graduation," he said quietly, cheeks flaring red in embarrassment. "I'm, uh, finally graduating with my master's and I've got a job offer?" He reached back, threaded his fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck and scratched it nervously. He'd been approached to teach at the new school, journalism and english comprehension, and while he'd expected to take a permanent position at Meadowview he couldn't say no to the salary offered by the new school.
Where the negaverse acquired the funds he didn't know, nor did he want to know.
Thinking about it would only make him sick and he had a pretty girl he wanted to focus on instead.
"I want you there," he said without thought immediately following Kat's words. "I would love to have you both there and it's just - thanks for not giving up on me Kit." He leaned into her, pressed his nose against her neck when he pulled her into him by roping an arm around her shoulder. "I wanted to ask properly but I don't think I'll do it if don't do it now. So," he cleared his throat, tried not to flush too much when he said, "Katrian, would you be my girlfriend?"

"James! James, that's wonderful-- A job offer?" Her eyes were bright, grin on her lips as she shifted to get a better look at him only to feel her own face flush as he nuzzled her neck. She closed her eyes, tilting her head just enough to nuzzle him back as she was drawn into his embrace. She could easily stay like this for a bit and forget about food for just a little longer-- Likely would have too, in all honesty, if he hadn't distracted her with a question. It took her a moment to find her voice, soft laughter falling from her mouth before her words. "Tell me, Mr Cheney, do you often get into the habit of nuzzling girls who aren't your girlfriend?" She leaned into his side easily, quite comfortable nestled this close to him, tone teasing when she spoke again. "... Does this mean I get to wear your jacket?"

"It's for the new school that's opening. I - I think Meadow wanted to offer a position but, Romano got to me first." And it was like he could say no anyway, not with the way Labyrinthite pressed loyalty into him. Respect was to be given, until the general said otherwise.
Were this any other time, James would have shied away from the PDA, but he was simply thrilled that Katrina was with him and that she hadn't drawn away like he'd feared.
"Only girls that I hope will be," he mumbled, resting his cheek against the top of her head as she leaned into him. "If you want, I wouldn't mind. You'd wear it better than I would anyway and I probably have my high school letterman jacket if you want it.

The mention of 'Romano' made her nose wrinkled and she pulled away slightly, grabbing her menu again to make it seem like she had more of a reason for the sudden distance than simply not liking the idea of him working around officers that she didn't know or trust. She'd have to find someone on the inside to weasel information out of-- Maybe she'd be able to bribe Silk? Cafeteria food might tempt the small cat enough to investigate the school on his own. Military cafeteria... Maybe not. "Hm. You might need your jacket to keep you warm once summer's over. Maybe something else? Something I can wear all the time-- We can figure that out after we order. Should probably be ready before the waitress makes her way around again, don't you think?"

James frowned when she pulled away from him, but let her do so as he too grabbed for his menu. "It's not idea but - the salary is hard to pass on, especially when you consider I have to start paying my student loans." He'd been able to pay parts of it here and there from his articles but most of it went to bills and the small amount of spending funds he'd allowed himself.
"I can get another jacket if you want it. Besides, I've got a dress code I'll need to follow and I don't think the colors of that jacket work," he tried to tease, green eyes skimming the menu. "But I'd be happy to give you a different token, just not a promise ring."

"Not enough pink on the jacket," a smirk touched her lips as she peered up over the edge of her menu briefly before glancing back down, waffling back and forth between two things that seemed like they might be a good idea. "What about that necklace you're always wearing? I've got some stones and beads at home-- I could make you a new one and you can let me borrow that one? Something I'd be likely to wear and hold on to, but nothing way too serious like a ring." Because that would be too much too soon. Way too much way too soon.

"You and Prissy with all that pink," James mumbled playfully. He wondered if that was one of the things that brought the girls together, all that pink. "I'm clearly more of a 'mint' or green type of guy."
But pink looked good with green didn't it?
At the mention of his necklace James blinked, confused, before he realized she meant the one he wore with his uniform. That would be easy enough. "Yeah okay, it's yours then."

"A girl's got to have a favorite color." Her eyes danced with mischief. "Green is good too, though. Did you know there's actually a variety of tourmaline that has both pink and green in it?" It wasn't her favorite variety, much preferring the bright pink, but the watermelon tourmaline did remind her a bit of the two of them together. "Know what you're getting? Waitress should be back over soon."

"I didn't," he replied, brow crinkling as he tried to remember if he ever went looking for any of the mineral's their alter egos had been named after. "I don't think I've ever really looked into the gem thing. I know the basics but that's it." James had to remember that Kat liked that life.
"Yeah, I'm ready whenever," he assured her, making it a point to bump his shoulder against hers.

"Well, now you do." She flashed him a grin, making a small mental note to try and track down a piece of it; maybe one that she could wrap in wire and turn into a pendant or a keychain to give to him. If she found a piece that was more green than pink maybe he'd like it... Thoughts for later, though, as soon enough the waitress was back in front of them to take their order. After everything that had been going on lately it was nice to have a normal night between the two of them. No patrols, no fights, no spars, no training... Just a date and a chance to celebrate civilian accomplishments, like new jobs.
