Too little, too late do Thorne and Zac get away from the spider-beast when it is in front of, having outmaneuvered the pair by use of its mirror. But rather than emerge entirely, a singular horrible claw strikes out of the mirror at lightning speed. The carry is enough to spare Thorne its wrath- Zac is not so lucky. In one fell swoop with a sickening crunch, the limb pierces Zac's torso and slams him to the ground. The tile beneath the claw breaks, the appendage having broken enough skin and bone to emerge on the other side. Blood trickles down Zac's body- unfortunately alive, no, why is he alive- as the claw slowly pulls its captured prey into the mirror. The rest of the group can only look on in horror as Zac is devoured, alive, by the monster. What little of a carcass is left of him, when he is finally dead, is wrapped in webbing and tossed away.

"You thought it was enough to save him, to act all brave and tough in front of the people who don't know you better. Don't know what a filthy mutt you are," the spider taunts Thorne, all eight eyes set upon the painter.

"You'll never be good enough. Once a mutt, always a mutt. The blood's made you so bad, you couldn't even save a child."
--

As Zac is pulled into the mirror, dying, there is a voice only he hears. It is sorrowful, sobbing and sad.

Zac, Zac, no. No, I'm sorry! It wasn't supposed to be this way! She stole them, she stole them from me, THIS WASN'T ME! I was just trying to save m-

Whoever it was, whoever he thought it was, it is gone.

He wakes up elsewhere.

Alexis feels bile rising in their throat, acid-hot, burning --

(They're not good enough. They're never good enough. They can't save anyone.)

When the spider-creature starts to eat Zac's corpse (not Zac, not him - he's got to be dead by then), Alexis gags once - twice - and holds their stomach with their knife-free hand, vomiting onto the floor - they've never seen someone die, not like that, not like a ******** animal ripped apart and torn apart and dead dead dead -

They can't think. They can't think.

"Sh-shut up," Alexis mumbles at the spider, and then again: "shut up, you don't know s**t you ugly ********." They hold the knife like a lifeline, still, face pale as a ghost. "Leave him the ******** alone!"

Alexis pushes Thorne away and dives for the monster's eyes with their pocketknife, teeth bared, an ugly noise emerging from their throat; and thinks very briefly about how they're probably signing their own death warrant.

Leila was shocked into silence by the sight of it. In just an instant, Zac had been reduced to another body. Just like the countless she had seen and worked with in her life. And also just like -- years ago, the headlights casting shadows through the snowflakes and the smoke, tinted by sputtering flames and blood on the intersection

-- surprisingly, the noise of bone-cracking and gristle-smacking as his limbs flopped further into that craggy mouth snapped her out of it, and she covered her mouth and gagged on a mixture of vomit and terror. Was that it? Was Zac really dead?

Just like that, she'd ******** it up, and Mercer was gonna be so pissed. She could do nothing.

No. No.

Thorne opened his mouth, and everything - every goddamn thing went wrong. There was nothing but this - a split second in which they were moving, and then another when they weren't. When the spider emerged before them, but it didn't get to him, even though Thorne had tried to shield them, throw them sideways - the claw coming forward, coming forward - and if only he'd been faster, if only he'd been -

But he hadn't.

Thorne's knees hit the floor and he was going to vomit, he was going to go insane -

His eyes flared at the sight, fractured images of the spider and Zac, broken bones and bits of flesh, blood and the sound it made when it came down hard on the floor. His entire body shook so hard it felt like he would be torn apart by it. He felt it crash through him, visceral and cruel and tearing, the truth, the fact of the matter -

The creature was right. He couldn't save anyone. He was just a dog off its leash, run too far from home. He could dress the part and look the part, but the creature was right. He would never outrun this monster blood, and now because of it, Zac was dead.

Zac was dead.

"No - no - " Thorne's voice broke over the words as Alexis forced his way past him, trying to hurt the spider, trying to get himself killed. His body was violent movement - he grabbed at the other and threw him - threw him as hard as he could away from the pincers and the maw and the thing that had ate away at Zac, had all but taken them into a trap with no way out. And then - because he'd killed Zac, probably killed them all, and what good did it do if he stayed anyways or went with all this bad ******** blood - Thorne stopped moving.

"What the hell do you want?" He hissed at it, his entire body screaming in protest.

If this was a nightmare, let it end. Let it end.

"One little puppy dog, gone gone gone," The mocking voice of Lucas teased, laughing. The spider turned to look at the remaining trio, prepped to lunge--

And froze. Almost like it had been paused.

"Be careful, PLEASE! This wasn't how this was supposed to happen! You're all being tricked," a feminine voice cries out from the spider. If Zac were here, he might recognize it. Leila, too, has an inkling she has heard this girl before.

But no. It couldn't be.

"Get out, don't listen to it, DON'T LIST--"

The spider snaps its jaws shut. Regaining its momentum, it skitters awkwardly out of the mirror, only for Alexis's attempts to stab it falling short. Rather than attack, it frantically works to regain its ground. Lucas's voice returns.

"What I want is to get rid of that dog," he snarls angrily, waiting. Watching.

"Absolutely worthless brat."

"Tricked?? That monster just killed Zac, what kind of ******** trick is that?!" Leila was speaking between poorly-contained sobs, her voice creaking from the effort to keep some shred of composure. More people dying would be even worse even if all she wanted to do was sink to the ground and cry herself to sleep. "What's not listening going to do to stop anyone else from getting eaten, anyway?"

The only way that make a difference is if there were some ridiculous ******** rule that said the creature could only attack someone it had successfully manipulated emotionally. Which

would ******** was an anglerfish. God dammit.

"That's how it's been able to attack you, Thorne. It's messing with you on purpose so it can eat you!" Leila shakily shouted. Hopefully that got through to the poor guy and whatever their attacker had inspired him to deal with.

The voice cries out, and Alexis misses, skidding to a halt a little too soon -- they repocket the knife, because -- okay. No. If this is a puzzle, stab stab stab can't be the correct answer. And somehow, if it's a trick --

Well. They doubt blue-hair kid is really properly dead. What better way to trick than to show people a gruesome death?

A deep breath -- one, two -- okay. Okay. Realign and reassess.

Alexis still, yet again, pushed Thorne back behind them, in some semblance of protectiveness, and whispered "Breathe. We're not going to let it hurt you. It's tryin' ta get to you, n - that's s**t - but it won't."

You're all being tricked.

Thorne stuttered on the concept of it - his mind reeling as the spider hissed at him again in Lucas's voice, etching gouges into the thin precipice he stood on between aware and gonegonegone - nightmare and reality. What had the ability to trick like this? Because it knew - and it had Lucas's voice -

Leila shouted at him. His head snapped to her, wild-eyed, hungry, and he forced himself to anchor his entire focus to her. His legs shook, and he was terrified, and no matter where he looked, a shadow flickered in and out of view. But then Alexis was there, shoving him back, stepping in front of him. Doing what he should have been able to do in the beginning. Thorne stumbled, breath hissing from his throat.

A trick - what trick - his mind sang, and his eyes flicked wildly to the shadow in the dark - the shadow that -

Wasn't there.

"Thorne, you're in a flashback - "

And suddenly the words were in his head. And he blinked and saw Lucas, but not with the edge of his fathers smile, not telling him his place, not - not doing what this spider was doing -

He saw the living room of the other mans apartment. Smelled blood and salt and sweat in the air. "--You're okay--" the memory of Lucas - the real Lucas - was saying. "You're okay. You're here, you're with me, and you're safe."

And it was that - the realization - that this thing, this creature, this monstrosity, could talk with Lucas's voice and say things it shouldn't know to say, but it wasn't Lucas. It wasn't, and it wasn't his father either. It was just another monster under the bed. Real, and deadly, and cruel, but nothing else.

Thorne remembered telling Lucas that he wasn't the real threat, and he was right. His expression shifted, nothing but the pain of tearing away from the flashbacks, the shadow, the ghost of his father snarling as the boot came down and down and down. But he turned to Alexis and Leila and his mouth opened as he stepped back towards them, forcing every part of him to stay grounded in their presence, to ignore the words of the spider, the spider itself. Let them hold him down with their words and their touch. He could fall apart later - later. But not now.

"I'm sorry - I don't - I'm sorry," he said, his voice like gravel, "Let's find a way out."

It was Thorne's father, it was Lucas, it was itself, and it was also a woman. Deep and sultry, would be sexual if not for the fact the spider was hellbent on destroying them. It disappeared from the mirror it was in, the sound of skittering filling the hall. It was, it would seem, everywhere at once and nowhere at all.

""҉Dón'̡t͠ l̨e̷t it͜ ̸t̢ŕick̶ ̀y̶ou,̛ ͠tha̷t's ͝h͠ow̴ it̷ ̶g͏et͞s͘ y̵ou! ́B͢òo h̵oo ho̧o͟, my ͏f͘r͠ieǹd̶ ͝is͝ ͏deád̛!̶ ̴Do yo͡u̢ re͏a͡ll̛y ͠t̶hinķ it'͜s s͟o͝ ͟simple?͡!͏ Do y̸ou ̷THIN̛K̷ I͞'̨d let ͟y̧ou ́p̶u҉z̶z͝l͡e ̶out̀ ̶my͞ p̧et̴'s w͡ȩb̵?!"͘ Laughter, high and cold, filled the room. It was most definitely feminine, definitely the voice which had joined the others last. Before anyone had time to react, it surged out once more.

It was not so kind as to catch with its claws this time. No, the spider was far too annoyed. Far too angry. Instead, for one horrifying moment, Leila would find herself in an almost comforting embrace, its jaws just barely touching her.

The sickening crunch of her being split in half would fill the room.

One of its claws struck out to almost tenderly pick up her still-living top half, the other for her now missing pelvis and legs. It carried both backwards into the mirror, and in the line of sight of the others, devoured her one limb at a time. An arm, then it would flip her, seeming to almost savor her. Every bite the spider takes is agony, its jagged jaws not quite clean enough for the muscles it tears. There is blood, god, there is so much blood.

It finishes, finally, with her head. When it is finished, it turns back to the others.

"͝A̷ f̵re̶a͏k̀ ͘a͢nḑ a ͡f͞a̡il̛u̴re͝. ̴D̀ò ͡y̕ou ̵real͜ly̕ th̀in͠k̴ ́Y̨OƯ ͡fùck͏-ưp̛s a̵r͝e go̕ing t͟o͏ ̶f͘ig͏ùre o͡u̶t ho͝w to ̸b͝ea̧t͟ m҉e̶?̨1̵ ̷Wh̢at ͝a̸ ͝joke.̛ I͝ a̡l̸m͞ośt féel̶ śorry̢ ͡f͘or y͢ou."

When Leila is finally given the sweet embrace of death- it seems the spider has the ability to draw out how long it wants its victims to live- she wakes up elsewhere.

No more. No more, nomorenomorenomore.

Thorne could do nothing. Nothing but watch, nothing but shout or scream or swear and swear and swear as Leila became the next victim. This is your fault, his mind screamed. And he believed it. But not long enough for it to make him stop moving, stop going. One left. One left. His entire body shook with horror, overloaded, his senses burning from everything he felt, saw, smelled, heard.

But he forced himself to move.

Thorne didn't say anything, he couldn't or he would stop and retch and scream and cry. He grabbed Alexis by the arm and hauled them both away from the spider.

But he made damn sure to start breaking every single mirror along the way in some desperate, wild attempt to stop it from coming after them as fast as it was when it had all of its little ins and outs.

But he had nothing to use but his hands, and he could feel the screaming agony of the glass snarling and cutting through his skin and knuckles with every glass that shattered beneath his frantic punches.

"Break them," he snarled at Alexis. "Keep running and break them!"

ITS THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
PostPosted: Sat May 07, 2016 7:02 pm

Alexis would have said something back to Thorne, to steady him, to level him - to see him through - and then the girl-woman-third of them (third remaining) is picked up and --

there's so much blood --

Their breathing speeds up to an almost panicked pitch -- there's blood in their hair, on their clothes - they're stepping in it they're stepping in it it's everywhere -

It all stops, when Thorne grabs their arm. It all calms. Alexis will have this breakdown later, when they are dead or somewhere else.

They can put away everything else entirely until then.

They follow Thorne's lead (what else can they do?) and lash out with all limbs, all viable systems, and try to destroy the mirrors with vaguely focused eyes.

"TWO PUPPIES LEFT!" The spider screams from its hideaway. It strikes a leg out at the remaining two, but misses. It is frantic now, its mirrors being broken. It has less opportunity to wait, and hunt, and strike. All of the voices are gone. It is a woman's- the one from before- but she sounds gleeful. Manic. Why she is so happy, you cannot comprehend.

The spider is losing, after all. Isn't it?

GAME START
For every post a player makes, you can destroy a total of THREE MIRRORS. Zac broke one, Thorne has broken two. There are twenty-seven mirrors to go, for a total of 30 mirrors. There is no need to roll a die. Instead, just RP breaking the mirrors. The turn order of one player post, one player post, one mod roll still applies.

And do try not to get eaten.
PostPosted: Sat May 07, 2016 7:14 pm

"I'm sick of being called a dog," Thorne shouted, more to vent the overwhelming terror inside of him than for any other purpose. He scrambled out of the way of a striking leg and threw his shoulder into the closest mirror, biting down on a scream when a shard went jagged into his shoulder.

He didn't know if they were winning or losing, but they were doing something. And they couldn't sit around and keep doing nothing.

"Come on, come on," he urged Alexis, "We're not ******** dying here."

He broke another, and another. His mind was blaring sirens - these were his hands, he might not ever draw again if he ******** them up badly enough - but Alexis was here and human and worth it. They were worth every ******** sacrifice. All of them were.

There are shards in their knuckles, crunching under their feet, and all Alexis can think about is I have to destroy these. They'd normally fancy themself more of an independent operator, but they'll make an exception for this time: imminent death has a way of bringing out the cooperative in people.

They kicked the closest mirror as hard as they could, biting back a cry when it reverberated all the way up through their leg, but watched it shatter into glimmering nothing all the same -- it was good they'd worn tough shoes, otherwise the largest shard would have gone all the way into their foot.
