For once, someone interesting at one of Uncle Buthos' parties! Bahari thought all Oban noblewomen were like the proper 'ladies' in his household, but Ichil proved that assumption wrong. He immediately liked the competent young woman and her fun stories about beasts and battle.

_________MYSTERIOUS WRECKAGE

Quote:
Mysterious Wreckage
Prompt 2

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Rumors are spreading of a traveler who has entered the area. Apparently, this traveler has a strange item they claim comes from a different time. It's hard to believe what people are saying, and the only way to really know what is going on is if you see it with your own eyes. So, you make it a point to travel to where the traveler was last sighted, and as you approach you notice a crowd. The traveler is holding up an object, high above their head, and shouting across the crowd. Some approach to get a closer look, some appear fearful, but everyone can agree...this is something no one has ever seen before.

What exactly is the traveler showing off? Roll 1d6 to determine what strange item has been found using the guide below:

Rolled 1-2

The traveler pulls out a strange piece of metal, warped a bit on the edges and covered with an unknown language. It looked similar to what you've read, and you think you can make out words, but overall it doesn't make much sense.

User Image

Rolled 3-4

The traveler pulls out a strange piece of metal, wound around and almost bouncy in nature. It seems a bit sharp on the edges, but in general it looks like it could possibly be some sort of jewelry piece, if it was smaller.

User Image

Rolled 5-6

The traveler pulls two strange pieces of metal, which don't seem to go together outside of their color. One is covered in a language that sort of looks familiar, but isn't fully legible. The other is a winding spiral, which is too big to wrap comfortably around a wrist.

It was one of those rare times when he was allowed to leave the manor to accompany Lady Myranda to the marketplace. This was a real treat. Usually, the Lady herself stayed to her household, and sent her servants out to do shopping. But today there was a famous textile market set up in the city. Apparently, this happened only every year, and the Lady was very excited to go see it for herself. With so many rare and exotic fabrics on offer, she didn’t quite trust her servants to pick out the cream of the crop.

Buthos was away on business in Orrod, so Bahari had pressed his luck and begged Myranda to let him to with her.

“I’ll be very good and super quiet.” He had promised. “And I’ll help the servants carry your bags when you buy things. And I won’t ask for anything.”

She relented and let him come along. He wasn’t sure if it was because of his promises, or simply because she figured that he would at the very least be able to entertain her on the carriage ride over. Buthos’ manor was on the outskirts of Sulburi proper, and it took a while to travel through the fray into the heart of the city. Which, of course, was exactly what the hybrid was looking forward to. Seeing fabrics from all over Tendaji certainly did hold some interest for him, but nowhere near as much pleasure as he’d get from simply seeing the world out of the carriage windows.

“Lady Buthos! Look at that, look at the janarim!” He pointed excitedly, perched right up against the window and pointing to several of the armoured beasts. There were three of them, each one in it’s own paddock. “Don’t you think critters that big and strong will be able to bust right through fences like those?”

“Yes, perhaps.” Lady Myranda explained, ever-patient but always quick to correct him. “You see, they must be well-trained. If they respect their keeper, and trust that they will be well-fed and looked after, they won’t run away. But don’t point like that, Bahari. It’s just as rude outdoors as it is in the house… maybe even ruder.”

“Sorry.” Bahari grinned sheepishly, putting his finger down. He was always getting in trouble for that one, always being excited to point out something so that he could ask questions about it or gush out with all the details he already knew. For the rest of the ride he did his best not to point, but ended up doing twice as much eager “Look! Look! Look there” to make up for it. But then the carriage stopped at the formal entrance to the marketplace, and Bahari found so much to look at that he couldn’t even think to point.

Alongside with her little hybrid, Myranda had brought two servants -- both stout and sensible Oban girls who knew how to keep an eye out for thieves and scammers. They lead the Lady into the marketplace and they all started a circuit of the finest stalls. Bahari was more than happy to trail along, holding on to one of the servants’ hands… although he quickly lost interest in the details of fabric-shopping. He would touch the softest and the shiniest bolts, then turn away to watch the crowd instead.

This was how he came to notice the old man standing on an upturned crate, holding out a shiny piece of metal. A few people stood around him, some with their arms folded and an impressed look on their face, some looking absolutely fascinated. Bahari tugged on the servant’s hand, and she, being somewhat distracted by the stall-keepers’ insistence on bringing down more and more bolts for them to look at, let go.

Bahari looked cautiously to make sure he wouldn’t get lost, and skipped across the aisle to see what the funny old man was up to.

When Bahari joined the small crowd, he was finally able to hear the strange man’s words. “Believe me, this is no regular metal trinket. Nothing like this can be made today! It is from an ancient civilization, and the skills for making and engraving metal like this was lost with them. See how strange it looks? See this colour?”

Bahari dutifully looked at the metal piece. It was flat and slightly curved, with some inscribed writing on it. He was a pretty good reader, but he wasn’t able to pick out what this one said. In any case, he was quite enthralled in the old man’s claim. An ancient treasure? That was so exciting! He hadn’t ever thought about that -- most of the history books in the library were about fairly recent events, things that some people remembered and had been around for. Wars between the nations, discoveries of lands like Yael, all of that. To think that there was an even deeper past beyond was quite exciting.

“Bahari!” One of the servant girls came up to snatch his hand. “Don’t sneak off like that!”

“Sorry!” He mumbled, following her back to Myranda (who seemed not to have noticed his sneaking away, still bent over a bolt of shining gold-brown cloth). But his interest was definitely piqued by this encounter.

Abie came with his Mentor to the manor. He had a big gentle snaptrotter with him. The beast's name was Laqui, and Abie let Bahari pet him. He even let Bahari sit on its belly! _________BORED, OR WORSE

”In Jauhar, I met a very large and robust woman of the Alkidike race. It was my first time encountering a member of her tribe, and I was of course very curious. Some of the locals cautioned me to be very careful in approaching her, and I must admit that I was certainly nervous about it. Reader, you must already know what I am neither a small man, nor weak. I had come all the way to this land bearing my supplies upon my back, with no beast of burden to toil for me. I had fought of bandits on the road, and had climbed the jungle-trees like the shifters.”

Bahari looked up from the page, letting his fingers rest on the hand-written ink. He had read this book before, and he knew most of it by heart. It was a definite favourite of his; as a kid he had read every single line with eyes as wide as dinner-plates.

This time, though, he was feeling something other than wonder. What… was it?

”The Alkidike woman lived close to the Shifter village, but away from the main settlement. As is normal in these parts of the jungle, there were no trails that lead to her home -- one simply had to travel through the interconnected tree-tops. By this point I had gotten rather accustomed to the climbing portion of this, but navigation still proved difficult. I did not want to waste time wandering lost in the trees, so I hired on a local girl as a guide. Although she was somewhat wary of me, she reassured me that Shilyah (which was the name of the Alkidike woman) was not likely to harm me if I gave her no reason to do so.”

This particular book had been written by an Oban explorer in the days before the war between Oba and Jauhar. The author, Ben-Hami, was likely the first of his kind to venture that deep into foreign territory. To Bahari, who had never gone anywhere besides Sulburi, it was a perfect perspective. Everywhere Ben-Hami went, the saw things that were new and wonderful Every line Bahari read revealed a world as unfamiliar to him as it had been to the author, all those years ago.

”I quickly became very thankful for my choice to hire the shifter girl, as the route to Shilyah’s home seemed impossible to pick out without help. The girl lead me over branches thick and narrow, often climbing (and, terrifyingly, jumping) to reach other levels and trees. When Shilyah’s house did come into view, it was so abrupt that I hardly noticed it until I was almost at the front door. You see, reader, that Shilyah lived in the Shifter fashion, in a house built around three big jungle-trees. She did not live in a hermit’s shack, as I had anticipated, but in a rather fine dwelling. Flags and banners hung from the eaves and railings. The shifter girl knocked on the door and called out the Alkidike’s name.

Bahari looked up again. He was starting, maybe, to narrow down on that achy feeling in his chest. Was he… bored? He was so jealous of Ben-Hami’s travels. Ben-Hami got to climb jungle-trees and meet Alkidikes. Bahari got to… climb up to the library tower and read the same pages over and over again. Ben-Hami got to live with Shifters in the jungle, eat food with them and listen to their stories. All Bahari got to listen to was Sulburi’s hustle and bustle filtering in over the rooftops and through the screened windows of the manour. Well, that and the occasionally interesting rumour uttered by Buthos’ noble guests, hardly enough to satisfy a teenager’s curiosity.

He’d been able to put up with it as a kid, sure. His imagination had kept him satisfied. But lately… it just wasn’t enough.

”Shilyah came out to meet us. She was most certainly tall! Almost twice the height of the Shifter girl, and more than a head taller than me. The Alkidikes also possess arching antennae, and these only added to her height. Her skin, typical of her species, was yellow-green and punctuated by darker markings. Her hair was black and knotted together into impressive locks. The most unnerving thing about her were undoubtedly her eyes. They were fully black, with no surrounding whites or visible pupils. Thankfully, the young shifter was right. Despite her size and threatening appearance, Shilyah seemed more bemused to see me than anything. It was her first time meeting an Oban just as it was my first time meeting an Alkidike, and within minutes I was accepting her offer of a meal.”

As Bahari read the description of the Alkidike’s meal, he picked a fig from a bowl on the windowsill beside him. He chewed the familiar sweet flesh and tried to imagine what jungle-fruit would taste like fresh from the tree. Surely there would be some to be found in Sulburi’s markets, if he only had the chance to visit?

Restless. He was restless. That was it.

He closed the book and let out a frustrated sigh. Uncle Buthos was still ignoring his requests to leave the manour. It was understandable when he was small -- Bahari had had all sorts of silly ideas of going out to fetch ‘pets’ for the house, all all that sort of nonsense -- but things were different now. Surely he was old enough to make his way around the city? There were servants his age that went out every day to do chores and things like that! But Buthos still insisted that he would get lost and robbed of his jewels. Bahari was used to trusting his benefactor, and had let the matter drop for the past few months… but the idea of venturing out kept welling back up inside him, and his favoured distractions of adventure books were doing more harm than good.
