It was rare that Nasuri went out a night; Aseara was quite adamant that her children stay inside and were safe and sound. Still, as Nasuri grew older and she gained friends from school, she was constantly being dragged to places. She usually politely refused and gave them a made up story, but tonight… Tonight was different. When she first got invited to the bonfire, her first instinct was to say no out of habit, but something within her told her to say yes. So without fully realising that she’d actually accepted the invitation, Nasuri tried to figure out a plan to leave the family home in the night.

It was easily to slip out of the home when everyone was asleep. If her father had been home he would have surely caught her, however since her mother usually came home exhausted and took care of everything, the Wind women slept quite hard. Nasuri checked in on her younger siblings to make sure they were okay before leaving and then headed out into the cooler night. She hurried to meet her friends quickly; she didn’t like to wander the streets alone at this time. She’d even covered herself to stay hidden.

When Nasuri spotted her group of friends waiting for her at the corner of the streets, she rushed over to them. Everyone was so excited to see her; this was the first time she was out at night with them! Helping her into the carriage, Nasuri settled between two of her girl friends. Someone had arranged for them to all be taken into the desert where the large fire was being hosted. Nasuri was excited, she didn’t know what to expect but there would be dancing and that was something she knew she was quite good at thanks to her mother.

The ride was short, all the girls chatted excitedly together about the evening. They all made sure they would all be watched over and taken care of. If one of them was in trouble, they would all keep an eye and make sure they all made it home safely. These things were fun, but they were also a bit dangerous. All kinds of people went to these things and they didn’t want anyone to get snatched up. Nasuri felt a little targeted by all the talk because of her parent’s positions in society, but she soon forgot everything once the fire came into view.

There was music playing loudly resonating across the dessert and the fire was so so large. Nasuri stared into the flames as they approached it. There were a bunch of other teens around her age that had gathered, people turned to see the new arrivals but didn’t pay them that much mind. Nasuri followed her group of friends as they all went and sought cups of water. They were not here to drink, even so Nasuri turned down some kind of alcoholic beverage from an Oban her age. She wanted to experience this night with a clear mind.

When it was finally time to finally dance, Nasuri decided to sit it out for a little bit. She knew if she started dancing she would attract a lot of attention and she wanted them to enjoy themselves. They were all dancing with boys after all and Nasuri wasn’t super confident with dancing with another individual yet. Plus, she had already repelled a few boys she didn’t know if they’d want to dance with her either at this point. Which was okay with her, she hadn’t come here to find love but to enjoy a night of freedom.

An Oban finally took a seat next to her and motioned to the fire.

“It’s nice to be out here isn’t it?” Nasuri nodded and smiled at him. He was about her age, perhaps a bit older with long hair that tickled is shoulder and slicked back.

“Yes it’s quite nice! This is my first time out to a bonfire.” Nasuri felt a bit silly but he laughed and extended his hand.

“I’m Mokani, nice to meet you…?” Nasuri took his hand and shook it gently.

“Nasuri.” She finished his sentence and laughed.

“Do you want to dance Nasuri?”

“Sure.”

Mokani stood up and then held his hand out for her to take, she grabbed on and he pulled her up onto her feet. Nasuri spotted a couple of her friends smiling at her and waving, she winked at them. Getting closer to the fire, Mokani began to dance and Nasuri followed him easily. He seemed surprised and upt his game a little but Nasuri still followed him with ease. She thought that perhaps she ought to show him how good of a dancer she really was! She decided to wait a bit and see what his limit was.

When he reached it, Nasuri chuckled and soon was dancing as if she was by herself. Mostly things that her mother had taught her, she moved with ease and soon found herself moving around the fire. Mokani stepped back and watched her curiously, he didn’t stop her and she was thankful for that. Nasuri didn’t realise however that soon enough people were gathering to watch her dance. At first she thought it was a little odd for everyone to be staring at her like that but she continued to move as if there wasn’t another person in the world.

Soon enough though she did realise that it was not her they were looking at but the dancing bonfire behind her. It followed her movements and at first surprised her so much that Nasuri faltered in her dancing. A few people told her to keep doing, to concentrate and Nasuri went back to dancing. He flames flickered and move to her movements, complimenting what she was doing and were quite beautiful to watch. Finally though when the song came to an end Nasuri did her final steps and stopped. She was sweating and warm from all the effort. People clapped and Mokani came over.

“I’ve never seen a mage do that kind of thing before!” He said excited. Nasuri’s eyebrows pinched in confusion.
“What do you mean?” A mage? He was silly, she was no mage.

“You mean you think that the flames just magically moved like that? I mean they did, but it was because of your influence!” Mokani seemed excited but Nasuri did not understand. She glanced at the fire again and then back at him.

“I don’t practice magic.” Nasuri said firmly.

“Well it certainly wasn’t me moving those flames. Let me go get you some water.”

Nasuri watched him go and took a seat starring at the flames. She didn’t really know how to take the news? She’d always thought of following her father’s footsteps as a beast tamer. She enjoyed working with beasts after all and well… This was news to her. She did feel drained, more so than usual for such a dance. Perhaps she really did have some sort of magical thing going on. She’d need to investigate once she was back home. Mokani came back and handed her a cup which she drank until it was empty and thanked him. She didn’t feel like dancing and spent the rest of the night chitchatting with him before going home with her friends.

--------------------------

Nasuri hadn’t slept all night. The idea that she possessed some sort of magical ability meant a lot of new options opened themselves to her. She was tempted… Ever so tempted to follow down that path. She knew what would be needed of her for a beast tamer, but a magical path was something all new to her. She needed to decide what she was going to do and so Nasuri ended up at the market looking for runes that day.

The vendor, another fellow magic user helped her greatly. They had all kinds of items she could use but there was just something about runes that called to her. The man even told her she could get the shape changed later on if she wished it. Nasuri thought it would be neat, perhaps she could use them in jewelry pieces. She certainly like that though but wanted to have a bit more mastery over them before such a thing happened. She didn’t want them blowing up in her face or something. Granted she didn’t even know if that was a thing or not.

So that night at dinner time, surrounded by family, Nasuri told them all what her plans were class wise. Everyone was quite supportive of her choice, but she still felt bad since she had wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps. Perhaps well… She could still be involved with the beasts right? She wasn’t about to travel barefoot across Tendaji after all. She was curious and afraid at the same time, but she knew she needed to find a teacher that would help her. That was her next step and she didn’t know where to begin.

Nasuri takes the final decision to separate herself from not only her triplet set, but also her mother and father. She deals with her feelings of ambition to become a mage and not waiting to disappoint her parents at the same time. In the end she goes with it and throw herself into this new life. Magic and Sauti are abound, but this plot point was to get her moving into her new life in Sauti.

Nasuri played with the runes in her hands. She had not told anyone she’d gotten them nor told anyone that she was magically inclined. She particularly hated hiding things from her bothers. Still, she was not ready to neither announce it to anyone nor tell her family she was leaving for Sauti. She knew her mother would be particularly heartbroken at the thought. She was the eldest daughter and she knew that a part of her mother expected Nasuri to stay and someday take over the Red. Nasuri loved the Red, but she knew that she was not a dancer and could not take over.

There was just so much she still had not come to terms with, Nasuri wanted to be here for her mother and help her as much as she could. But did she do what her mother wanted and put aside her dreams? Nasuri sighed, rolling onto her back in bed to stare at the ceiling. The worst part of it was that she knew her mother would be devastated to learn she was giving that up for a trip to Sauti. She wanted to learn that magic and when she was ready she’d return to Oba to learn some more.

The Red or Sauti… Argh, Nasuri sat up in bed narrowing her eyes at her dresser and sighing. No, her mother would forgive her even if it took some time. Nasuri couldn’t stay, end of story. She didn’t exactly know how she was going to announce it to her; she was sure the news would be received with a very hard stare and deeply furrowed brows. Maybe she’d make sure her father was also present to placate her mother just in case something happened. She felt bad but probably not as bad as feeling like she’d disappointed her father.

Nasuri had always thought she would follow in her father’s footsteps and that had been her first thought when the magic had first begun. She had always imagined herself as a beast tamer, always and really she could still be a beast tamer. The magic though seemed to call to her, it seemed to grab her and gently be lulling her away from the choice of becoming a beast tamer. She could always just say no and keep on tack? That would mean she wouldn’t need to tell her mother that she was leaving for Sauti either.

But that was the easier option wasn’t it? And Nasuri didn’t like taking the easy route. There was just something about having this easy couchy life that was just not appealing to her. Why? She didn’t know, maybe it had something to do with the fact that it meant giving up this unknown thing within her. She could say no to it all and follow in her father’s steps and never have to worry about a thing. She felt like most people would pick that fate, just so they didn’t face the bad things. Did that make them weak?

No she wasn’t letting her father down and no she wasn’t leaving her mother behind. Nasuri stopped the thoughts from forming; she was decided in her ambitions. A part of her wanted to be powerful and strong just like her parents and that meant finding the fire within her or the wind. The magic called and she would answer, but with that call Sauti also tugged at her and so she would follow both. Maybe she’d just follow her gut instinct from now on, it hadn’t failed her so far and she felt like it was the right thing to do.

Nasuri stood up from her bed and placed the runes in her pocket. So it was decided. She was finally decided. Nasuri would announce it tonight to her family and she would leave the following week. It would be hard to say goodbye to her brothers, but they too at some point would find their own way. She would also dearly miss her not so younger sisters too, but she’d be back and she would write to them every day. Nasuri didn’t know what kind of life awaited her outside of Oba, but there was electricity running through her veins.

Moving towards her closet, Nasuri threw it open and glanced around. What was suitable clothing for up there? She needed to start packing didn’t she? Also probably cull some of her clothing. She’d see if any of her sisters would want anything before giving the poor the rest. She didn’t want to leave anything she truly loved behind, but she knew she also needed to do a lot of traveling and couldn’t bring everything with her. A few hair pieces, a few nice robes… No makeup while she traveled too... Nasuri made a face, she was going to miss that.

It took a little over two hours before Nasuri had finally sorted out her closet (or was it her life?). She’d made the hard decisions of what she was keeping and what she was giving away. She’d had to do this because her plans felt more concrete now, like this was final. There was no going back now. Nasuri looked at the mess she’d made. There was very little she was actually keeping with her. She had maybe a few days’ worth of clothing, just enough to get her to Sauti and then she’d figure that part out later.

Nasuri took a breath, she’d pack later. For now she knew dinner time was coming and she was going to announce it. She could still not leave… She could still stay here. Nasuri left her room and made her way downstairs. She could already hear the chatter of her family members as they settled into the dining area. Another breath, Nasuri entered and stared at all of them.

“I am going to be a mage and I am leaving for Sauti!” Nasuri glanced at all of their faces as they turned one by one to look at her. There was no going back now.
