Stage 2 - Solo 3
A Letter From Matori

The sands of Matori were softer and far less harsh than the sandy terrain of Oba. Despite having lived on an island surrounded by waters the boy had to admit that this was far different from the rocky coasts he had known. Matori was teeming with life here and there and he had to appreciate the waterfalls that cascaded down their cliffs. It would be beautiful if not for being infested by mainlanders – though the Matori he could respect faintly. Hadn’t they after all been through their own torments by the rest of the mainland? Those Obans had truly inflicted harm into the land the races here alongside those extremists that now invaded his own homelands.

“I wonder if she got my letter, Aia?” Kieran mused out loud as he watched the crashing waves hitting the Matori shore. The question did stir some worry up in his gut, however, as he had to wonder about how she was to react to it. “I suppose another letter wouldn’t harm things.” It had only been a couple of weeks since the last had been sent, but Kieran decided that a follow up would be fine.

Dear Taijana,

I’m in Matori now next to the ocean. When I glance over the waves I have to wonder if I can see our shores since it’s so close to our home. Yet, I decided to stay for a few more moons just to explore this area. A few creatures here have caught my interest and I’m trying to see if there is a certain way to go about finding out more concerning them.

You would like Matori I believe. It’s a busy place full of trade, but out here away from the villages and towns the ocean is quite lovely. Rather than sitting on hard rocks you can walk through soft sands of white and find shells of rainbow here. Waterfalls also cascade down the cliffs and truly make a remarkable impression. The caverns here are fascinating as well – not like the one I showed you, but still beautiful in their own way.

I apologize if my last letter did upset you. I meant no harm, but wanted to be honest about the things I have been finding out here. So this one should be nicer and I have even attached a sketch of the area I’m currently sitting in. I am fine and well especially now that I’m away from the desert heat and I pray that you are the same.

Best,

Kieran.

He actually placed a few shells in the heavy bottle that he used for the letter before giving it over to another outgoing ship. “Would it be better if I just went home to show her I was okay other than these letters?” He questioned before shaking his head. No, going home would only waste more time and he wanted to explore as much as possible before the weather turned. Perhaps then when the cold came through he would go back to Yael and stay hidden in his home for a moon or two. That sounded nice because then he could rest up and continue to fill out his journals and catch up on all the things he had acquired while on the Mainland.

“Alright then we’re exploring more of this shore today.” That decided Kieran hopped up from his perch along the rocks and started to walk again. Out here the male even walked without a hood up and could actually enjoy the feeling of the sun against his bare skin – skin that since leaving Yael had grown slightly darker while his gaze had dimmed just in the slightest. Returning home had seemingly helped during the festivals, but now the male had to wonder what would become of him if he stayed out here for more than a year on end. Would he completely lose that gleam? It definitely would be easier to navigate the mainlanders, but at the same time he would be considered a stranger in Yael for it. Was it worth losing his glow to be on the mainland for so long?

Not that it affected his vision – he was already almost blind without his glasses. Still, Kieran had to wonder what changes could happen if a Yaeli did happen to become crazy enough to raise a family away from their homeland and rather came out here to live. He thought of the woman he had met during the tournament and shook his head. Now she was a very unique case. He was impressed needless to say by her dedication and her strength that allowed her to rise above the many challenges that surely had daunted her since coming here. Now that would be a story he would love to learn…why come here out of all places?

“Though I think the longer I stay here the more I realize…how different this life can be.” Mused Kieran as he ran a hand alongside a tree. It truly was beautiful out here and he had heard that the other lands farther inland were even more beautiful. I would like to visit that Jauhar place next. Yet, he hadn’t found the time or the courage to venture further than Oba. Or more of the fact that he had just gotten lazy staying in the lands that allowed him quick access to the ocean and to…Yael. Strange how that worked…

Was it like he was waiting for someone?

Kieran shook his head. There wasn’t going to be anyone coming after him anytime soon – his mother had passed and his only friend would pass out by just touching a boat towards the mainland. “I suppose then Aia that means we’ll be leaving in a few days to head into the jungles ourselves. I hope you’re ready.” The Keldari slithered around his neck and hissed as if in anticipation. Honestly, he wondered if she had more of a sense of adventure than he even did at times. She definitely seemed excited by the idea of travel after all. He had never known a keldari so determined to stick with someone before, but Aia definitely knew how to stick – even when he first tried chasing her off in Yael she had persisted in following him.

Chuckling at the thought Kieran reached into his bag once more and settled on a fallen log to begin taking notes. A few final notes before he left Matori wouldn’t hurt after all. But what should he sketch? More of those Bushi or some of those fish he had spotted before? Then again he could also draw some of the Matori he had watched playing on the beach earlier as well. Honestly, there were quite a few options. I suppose I could do a bit of everything. He wanted to savor the memory of these lands after all. As he dipped his quill into the ink Kieran began to make his rough commentary and sketches while behind him in the brush movement occurred.

A soft silver gaze was watching him full of curiosity about the strange scented stranger sitting in its area. Only a soft hiss from Aia kept the creature away as it moved around the two with only its long lizard tail swaying behind it as any warning of the large snaptrotter that continued to follow after the strange Yaeli…

CLASS QUEST

(In this Kieran reflects upon his past mindset against the Main Landers and learns that he has begun to soften towards them - even to the point that he saves an Alk rather than leaving her alone something that Kieran would have never thought of doing before. His decision then is to stay in the main land and continue exploring rather than going straight back to Yael as planned...)

He had helped a stranger out.

A mainlander had been hurt and he had reached out to help them. Baffled by his own actions, Kieran ran a hand through his hair as he stared at the pages of notes scattered out before him. He had come to this place in order to find out more about the lands from which his kind had been excluded for so long, but instead he had found that he was finding out more of himself instead. He was losing touch with that stranger who had just simply quested for vengeance over those who had mistreated him and taken his mother away. Now he was actually taking care of the main landers – as he had with Aaricia when she was injured.

It was crazy.

His own realization came earlier this morning when he had been walking along the deserts of Oba. It was out close towards the borders of that strange place known as Jahuar when he spotted the commotion. A small scream was echoing through the desert sands and Kieran immediately snapped to attention. Who was in trouble out here? His brow furrowing the Yaeli kicked through the sands and began to run towards the sounds.

“Hello?” He called out with concern as he slid down a sand dune towards where he thought the scream to have originated, “Is anyone here? Can you yell again?” Leave it to me to find myself running straight into a possible trap just because I felt worried about someone’s safety. Always a golden heart – even if it cost him some things. But he had no time to reflect or to question his actions.

“Me!” The tiniest of whimpers came out from the sands and Kieran found himself jumping over rocks to come face to face with…an Alkidike. It may have not been a full blood, but even as a hybrid this woman was completely reminiscent of a pure blood with her black eyes and antenna and decorated skin. The only difference was that she seemed smaller in stature -even for a young apprentice- and that her hair was a light gray rather than those dark black strands, “Are…are you coming to help me?” She gasped while Kieran stood there frozen.

Beneath his cloak the Yaeli’s gaze slowly studied the girl. As his shock began to fade, Kieran noted how her ankle was twisted at a strange angle and that her arms and legs were cut up and bruised, “What…happened?” He found himself asking while the rest of his mind was in shambles. What was this situation? Out of all the people who would need his help…an Alkidike?! Something that immediately triggered him with memories of being a young apprentice watching his own mother getting cut down by the towering creature…a deep breath forced him to look at the girl before him and not at the memory.

“I was out hunting – I wanted to prove myself to my sisters…” The girl began with a quiet sigh, “I found prey, but they turned out to be predators instead. In my hurry to get away I left forest and out here lost my footing. The next thing I knew the sands swallowed me up and here I am…with a bad leg and other injuries.” She turned her gaze away in shame, “I didn’t want to beg for help, but falling made me yell in surprise.”

“Ah.” Just leave her here Kieran. Let her rot or better yet just slice her throat – stop these creatures from spreading even more than they already are. Such dark thoughts lingered in the back of his mind before he found himself numbly offering a hand towards her, “Let me help you. Can you manage if you use me as a crutch?”

“I…I think so.” She flushed lightly before reaching out a hand to clasp his own, “Thank you.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Kieran found himself forcing a smile as he helped the girl to hobble, “So you need back towards those trees?”

“Yes, I’m sure my sisters should be on their way to find me.”

Her older sisters – all pure alkidike – thanked him for his help in recovering their foolish and younger sibling. Kieran actually found a small smile lighting up his features as he watched the trio walk away with the little one in tow. So they could act as a family….and not just simply be blood thirsty monsters.

They weren’t those on Yael.

The Yaeli held out his hand in front of his face, “You reached out and helped her, Kieran. How did you manage to do that?” Even now a few hours later it was that same hand which he stared at. Before he would have simply left the girl because of her looks – a life for a life. A loss for a loss. How dare they allow those creatures to come to Yael and murder his mother and countless others? But now as the male stared at his open hand a small sigh simply left instead, “I suppose…no one truly knew what was going to happen back then.” How could he blame them for leaving those extremists in a place believed to be deserted?

Perhaps a part of him would be bitter, but today was proof that his heart was softening. Meeting so many – pure Alks, hybrids, and other earthlings – had taught him that the world truly was more complicated than a few grudges and superstitions. While he had thought he knew everything on Yael coming over to the main land had given him a good kick in the face. He was far from knowledgeable and this place still had a lot to offer him. I hope Taijana won’t be too mad. His cheeks flushed lightly at the thought of his friend. It seemed that he would be sending her quite a few more letters in the future.

Because he wasn’t going to go home just yet - there were still several countries and races to meet and interact with. Kieran was determined to find out about them all. And perhaps to even continue finding out more about himself…

CLASS QUEST

The water rippled in the evening sunlight. In the crest of the waves shadows of creatures floated before disappearing back into the ocean depths. Glowing eyes from the craigs of rocks and from the high branches of trees seemingly also stared down at the Yaeli as he walked along the shore. Others may have seen the approaching darkness or the strange chill in the air as a warning sign, especially those extremely keen on superstitious beliefs, but for Kieran this was nothing new. After everything he had experienced on the mainland the man was pretty disconnected from the old wives tales that frightened many on the island. No, none of this scared him at all.

Perhaps he could continue walking? Kieran pursed his lips thoughtfully as he surveyed the darkening beach. Adventure did often come in the darker times of the evening and it was thrilling when you only had yourself to rely upon. A small flicker of mischief did appear in his gaze before the man shook his head. Risking such things would have once been fine, but now….his fingers clutched at his pants as he stilled his heart. He wanted to go, wanted to see what was waiting for him out there in the darkness of the wild but he couldn’t. Kieran’s gaze lowered towards the ground as he let out a long sigh, “Would one last time be a good final farewell?”

He took a few steps forward as if daring fate to try him. He was an adventurer, an explorer who had braved the mainland full of demons and other such myths. He had climbed the highest cliffs, fallen nearly to his death in great canyons, fought vicious beasts, studied rare plants that could easily poison anyone ignorant of their deadly charm - “I’ve done a lot.” Kieran stopped his steps and shook his head, “And I never cared before.” So why now? Why did he hesitate to go into danger?

Surely the answer was obvious. Kieran’s gaze softened at the realization. He had a wife now, a wife who was also carrying their children. Kieran’s shoulders relaxed at the thought, could he be a father? A father who was dependable? The man frowned. He had never been dependable before - spirits Taijana had even rushed to the mainland to take care of him since he had been so reckless before. But that was who he had been, a reckless young man full of curiosity for the world. Was he satisfied after years of being away from Yael? No. Kieran’s gut twisted at the thought. The answer would always be no, at least until he finally explored all that there was to see. Now not only was there a great sea before him, but the man had been there to witness the newcomers from Belrea. They had come seeking
knowledge and had promised it to those willing to travel to their lands with them.

Still, he was a father and it was his duty to stay here and care for his wife and children. That he was fine with - even if he still dreamed of faraway places the man knew his deep love for his family would sustain him. Behaving himself, however, when there was something interesting nearby? That was a bit more problematic. Kieran took a deep breath and clenched his fists as he stared towards the setting sun, “I will be a better man, I will not dive into danger.” He could do that much, right? He could behave himself and be reliable and not stress Taijana to death by diving into danger. Curiosity killed the perzi...right?

“I suppose I’ll begin by going home right now then. I can do this.” Kieran spoke with a small smile on his face, but his stomach seemed to sink ever so slightly with each step away from the jungle. He would go back to the safety of his home and go to bed with his resting wife. Hell he could read if he didn’t feel exhausted enough for sleep just yet. Sleeping was probably something else he could work on as well since he often stayed up into the late hours of the night reading and pouring over old texts. Admittedly he would also spend his evenings in other ways as well now that he had Taijana living with him, but now that she was pregnant the man was trying his hardest to behave. Just thinking of that brought a faint flush to his cheeks. I suppose there are other ways to spend my energy than diving into danger all the time.

He could do this. The more he thought about it the more confident Kieran was in the fact that he had moved on from his reckless days. He was a grown man now who was cautious because danger was not for him anymore. Safety is now my middle name. Yeah, he could do this. He was no longer the same old Kiera-

A howl broke through the heavy night air.

“Dammit.” Kieran lowered his triumphant fist before spinning on a heel to try and pinpoint what the sound had been and where it had originated. He wasn’t in Tale so it wasn’t a witu nor was he in Jahaur so it wasn’t a radaku and no janarim roamed the wilds of Yael….had he been away for so long that he had forgotten the dangers of Yael? “A wirenth.” The name of the giant clawed beast slipped through his lips like a dreaded whisper. It left a heavy taste in his mouth not because of fear, but because of anticipation. He wanted it to come out. No, he was supposed to be more cautious - a sane man would be wanting to leave now. So why was he moving forward to investigate? It was like his body was on autopilot as he moved forward through the thick brush of the jungle.

Whatever was happening the wirenth was not alone. Didn’t they normally feast on Keldari? So why did it sound so vicious like it was challenging something? Was someone or something in trouble? Once again the reckless Yaeli thought nothing of himself as he darted forward through the jungle towards the sounds of fighting. When he did find the wirenth Kieran did find himself stumbling to a halt. Out of all the scenarios the man had imagined this was one that he had never expected, “A snaptrotter…?” Kieran frowned as he noticed a bleeding snaptrotter snarling towards the wirenth.

It was obviously at odds in the strange new lands and looked worse for wear while the wirenth seemed well rested and strong. Caution, be that cautious man- The new Kieran would turn away now and just let fate be fate. But that just felt so wrong. I’m sorry Taijana. Kieran closed his eyes in a brief prayer before darting forward over a fallen tree, “HEY!” The Yaeli brandished his whip and snapped it towards the wirenth, “Leave!” His gaze narrowed as the creature’s gaze darted towards him. Its mouth was in a permanent snarl while jagged teeth tipped crimson from blood and yellowed from age gleamed in the fading light. One eye was cloudy while a nasty scar covered half of its face - more than likely from a territory battle with another wirenth years ago. In the darkness the creature seemed to blend in save for the faint speckle of white that showed through its fur. It was old and grouchy and probably not looking to fight more than one creature at a time.

It was a gamble, but Kieran was willing to risk it. He also had to pray that the snaptrotter wasn’t about to chew his arm off as well. Who knew how feral the beast could be? Still as he stared death in the face Kieran felt no fear and no regrets. This was his life and this was who he was. He wouldn’t be Kieran without staring death in the face on occasion. The thought made him smirk, a rare display of mania on a typically calm face. Snapping his whip out again Kieran swirled it so that a painfully high pitch erupted around him from special tassles he had connected with the whip - a fact that the wirenth despised.

And it seemed that once more the gods had decided to let him win. As the wirenth lashed out as if to fight Kieran the snaptrotter also lashed out and the giant creature seemed to be at a loss. Who did it fight? Was it even worth fighting two things? The strange smelling creature hadn’t been a keldari anyways...the tail had been a lie. So hissing once more the wirenth turned tail and slowly slunk off through the darkness.

Kieran let out a sigh of relief before another knot formed in his stomach as he glanced to the side and saw the glowing gaze of the snaptrotter staring him down, “Ah….you see….I’m sorry did you want to fight alone?” He found himself stating simply before sitting down for a moment, “You can go along with your life now.” He waved towards the creature, but the snapper simply turned around one last time before tasting the air.

“You’re right the big guy may decide to come back.” Kieran let out a sigh before standing back up, “I have a home to get to, buddy. So good luck to you.” The tamer saluted the creature before starting back the way he had come. And behind him rustling began. Even as he walked and then stopped the rustling would simply mimic his own moves and the Yaeli found himself grinning in amusement. It seemed he had picked up something rather unexpected tonight, “I hope Taijana doesn’t mind.” Reaching into the satchel at his side Kieran purposefully dropped a piece of jerky from his hand to the ground. The hungry snaptrotter eagerly darted forward from hiding and took the piece in one gulp.

“You’re not really that sneaky, you know?” Kieran chuckled before boldly holding out another piece of jerky, “You eat this and not my hand, right?” As the piece was snatched Kieran slowly began to feed the snaptrotter jerky until he could finally touch the top of the head. Perhaps being a bit reckless wasn’t so awful after all. A small smile warmed his features. It simply was who he was. I just hope Taijana won’t hate me for it.

He could still be reckless, but there was a difference. Kieran was home and he would stay home because having Taijana had made him realize what a home was. Certainly he still had a dying curiosity to see the world, but he also had a deep love for his family. I suppose this is they what they call fatherhood. Perhaps one day he would go out to see the world again, but for now he was content. For the first time in many years he was happy to stay in one place because he finally had a home again. Not an empty house to live in, but a home that held warmth and love. He had finally let someone into his life and while he wasn’t going to be a perfect father, as he never could get rid of that recklessness, he was willing to try.

Summary: Kieran has feelings of doubt about being a father and tries to resolve them by telling himself to become a different person, a much more careful and reserved man. However, he gets attracted once more to the sound of danger and being the reckless man he is Kieran goes towards it. Afterwards he realizes that he can’t ignore who he is, but that he has changed in other ways - he is happy to be home instead of traveling nonstop and is accepting of the fact that he is becoming a father. In fact, he has gone from running away from commitment to embracing some of the biggest commitments of all.
