Selina was, of course, interested in the tea cakes, especially since Ceri said it was her own recipe. "I don't have many recipes I'll claim as my own, but the Apple Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce I made for my dessert for the Cooking with Magic OWL is my version of my grandmother's recipe. You should have seen the look on the examiner's face when he got his first taste of it after it was pulled out of the oven. You'd have thought he'd just discovered Nirvana."

Handing a plate with a couple tea cakes on it to Selina, Ceri said, "Well, I'm entirely sure that these tea cakes won't make you see nirvana, but they're definitely tasty." She smiled and the tea kettle behind her started to whistle. Turning around she removed it from the stove and grabbed two teacups from the tray. She set the tea kettle down on a hot pad and then the cups in front of Selina and herself. Pouring the tea, she sat down on the stool and smiled, adding a few teaspoons of sugar to her tea.

When my mother used to make her bread pudding, the smell filled the house. It's one of the things I really miss about her." Selina added a few teaspoons of sugar to her own cup, and sipped at it, before trying a little bit of the snack put before her. "These are quite good, Ceri," she commented after a moment. "Too bad you never took the Cooking with Magic class, you would have had fun there."

There is a man that I know...
Seventeen years, he never spoke.
Guessed he had nothing to say;
He opened his mouth on Judgement Day.
I listened with all of my might,
But was scared by the look in his eyes!
Like he'd already lost the fight...
And there was no hope ever in sight.

Anti stopped when she no longer felt her hair even brush her shoulders, and looked in the mirror for the first time, scissors shaking in one limp hand. The only thing she recognized about herself were her eyes and the set of her nose and her mouth. They were the only vaguely Lillantine remnants she saw on her person. Her hair had never been this short- this boyish- before. For as long as she had remembered it had always been long, something to hide behind, to shield herself with. She felt naked without it. But she was different now, Anti assured herself. She wasn't the person she'd been before. She wasn't their daughter anymore. She tousled her newly short head of hair gently, and straightened her blouse. She was used to wearing dresses in the summer- to be only clad in a short sleeved blouse and skirt felt odd when she wasn't in school. Part of her could hardly wait to be back in school- she was still profoundly uneasy in the Davies home, expecting someone, anyone; Ceri's stepmother, her father, to come bursting in at any moment. The manor house was far bigger than she'd expected; it had nothing on the home she'd grown up in, but with only two people living in it was plenty big of enough, and the Welsh surroundings were certainly more cheerful than Ilkley. Ceri was a gracious hostess, although Anti couldn't recall ever staying over at someone else's home before now and thus had nothing to compare it to, but that didn't dissuade the sense of guilt that she was monopolizing someone else's summer holiday, nor the sense of self-disgust. She felt like she could breathe for the first time in years. Why hadn't she left before? Why had she been so stupid as to stay? Of course she knew why, but that didn't stop the thoughts. She stepped out of the bathroom and into the hallway. "Ceri?" she called hesitantly.

So far, Ceri hadn't said anything to embarrass herself, Belinda had mostly avoided the two of them and Antigone hadn't been entirely distant. And no one had come looking for Anti, so that was also a big plus. Ceri was doing her best to be a good host and she thought, at least, that she was doing a good job. Ceri was in the kitchen when she heard Antigone call for her. Putting down the tea kettle, she searched through the house before finding the girl. She was standing in the hallway outside the bathroom and gosh! She'd cut her hair! Granted, she was still gorgeous. Ceri smiled at her and said, "Wow, you're beautiful with short hair." Her cheeks colored a little pink, but she spoke confidently.

Anti flushed scarlet seemingly in response to Ceri's blush, although the other girl was far more shameless about it. She felt a sudden spike of anxiety- or butterflies- or both- because this was yet another reminder of how uncertain she was of where she and Ceri stood. Not to mention that she had no idea how to respond to compliments like a normal human being might. No one had ever even jokingly suggested that she might be anything close to 'beautiful' before. It wasn't a word she'd ever associate with herself. Her mother had always agonized over her height, her gawkiness, her plain face... and any comments in regard to her even being slightly appealing had always been in reference to how other people saw her, particularly men. If she had a knut for every time her mother had told her what men didn't like in a woman, she wouldn't have to worry about her current lack of funds. "Thank- thank you," she muttered sheepishly. "I just thought... it'll make it harder to recognize me, especially from the back, and um... it was time for a change."

When Antigone blushed, Ceri's blush deepened a little. But at least she knew she could get under the girl's tough outer shell. That was a start and Ceri would take any victory she could get. She smiled and nodded when the girl accepted her compliment, then commented on her hair. "It's a little ragged, but I think that just adds character. It definitely suits you. It looks wonderful on you." The red head watched the girl, her blue eyes wide with wonder. "I made tea if you want some," she said, gently biting her lip.

It had been a couple months since they'd graduated from Hogwarts and the house was getting rather tense. Belinda had been getting more annoyed at their presence in the house. But Ceri seemed happy, at least she was spending time with her girlfriend. Ceri had been in contact with her uncle and finally gotten herself a copy of the will that left the house to her, not her father. She was fine with letting Belinda live there, as long as she was nice to them. Standing in the kitchen, she turned to Anti. "I mean... if she doesn't say anything mean to us, it'd be impolite for us to kick her out, right?" Ceri chewed on her lip, wondering if her girlfriend felt the same way.

Anti was convinced that if she had to spend one more week in the same house as bloody Belinda, she was going to move out in the dead of the night. She loved Ceri, she really did, but for all of her newfound assertiveness, her girlfriend transformed back into a timid twelve year old when faced with her stepmother. And she did not find timid twelve year olds attractive, having been one herself at one point. It hadn't been so bad before, because Belinda hadn't been around as much. Anti hadn't even been formally introduced to the woman until this summer, and found her a bit of a joke. Compared to her own mother, she was laughable. She understood Ceri's hesitance to outright defy the woman, even if she was quietly rebelling against her- Belinda must have seemed like a formidable giant to a child. But Ceri wasn't a child anymore. Neither of them were. And she wasn't going to stay in this house to be bullied about by some delusional old b***h. "If you still want to live with her, that's your choice," she said flatly. "But I won't. She clearly can't stand either of us, she's a controlling narcissist with nothing better to do but make passive aggressive comments in an attempt to make you more malleable to her demands, and you don't even like her, never mind love her." Anti had loved her parents, once. Not because she'd wanted to but because she'd felt like she'd had to. "She doesn't own the house, and if she does stay- mind you, I'll move out, because I can't live with her a moment longer- she ought to be paying you rent at the very least." She didn't want to come across like she was threatening to leave if Belinda didn't... but she essentially was.

if we are to battle I must not be weak.

Ceri turned to stare at Anti as she went off on Belinda; sure she wasn't the nicest person but... well, Anti was right. Ceri chewed on her lip, her thoughts mulling over the whole situation. "I mean... I guess you're right. I just..." She sighed and shrugged. Ceri knew that Antigone was right, the woman had never been nice to her. The red head shrugged again, then poured the kettle into her cup, swirling the tea around for a while. "I'll talk to her," she said, a little meekly, chewing nervously on her lip.

Anti stared back at her girlfriend; she had to see that this was ridiculous, surely. Maybe it was just her overly-logical, emotionless Ravenclaw side kicking in, but Ceri owned the house and had a good deal of money herself now. She was no longer dependent on Belinda for anything, least of all financial support or a place to live. And, shallow as it might be, Anti rather liked this house. It was big, but nowhere near as intimidatingly huge or foreboding as the Lillantine estate. She thought, with some redecorating, it might even be warm and welcoming. The gardens were beautiful in a slightly wild way. She didn't want to be forced out of it purely because no one dared tell Belinda to go find another rich man to leech off of, preferably one without any children to harass. "The sooner the better," she said firmly. "It can't go on like this- you shouldn't be tiptoeing around your own house." She was a little wary of saying 'our house'- it wasn't as if they both rented a flat together, after all. Technically, she was still a guest in Ceri's home, even if she'd soon be making her own income.

You speak minds handed down to you,
By the lies handed down by your truth,
And your angels who dance at your will,
Will mask your scrambling youth.
Pick up your rope, Lord, sling it to me,
if we are to battle I must not be weak.

Ceri frowned at the firm tone in Antigone's voice, but she could see why Anti was being the way she was. From what little Ceri knew of her previous home life to what Anti knew about the way that Belinda had treated her... it was only logical that she should go. Ceri noticed the slight change in her tone when she said the house was Ceri's, as if she was avoiding saying they both owned the house. Now, while Ceri knew in the back of her mind that she loved Anti and wanted to marry her, their relationship was still young and bringing that up to her now might scare the girl away. After all, it had been hard enough to convince her to come out with her feelings in the first place. But Ceri needed to reassure Anti that this was their home and not just hers. "You're right, Anti. We don't need to be hiding in our home. I'm going to talk to her." She made sure to put the emphasis on our, then set her tea cup down. Ceri was thankful she'd put her wand in her pocket this morning, because she knew that Belinda wasn't going to leave without some kind of a fight. Huffing a small sigh, she turned and walked from the kitchen. Belinda preferred to hide herself in the master bedroom. Stopping outside the door to the bedroom, Ceri contemplated knocking, but then she remembered all the times Belinda barged into her room. Drawing in a brave breath, she turned the knob and entered the room. "Belinda, it's about time you move out," Ceri said determinedly, puffing up her chest to appear larger.

Anti had originally intended to simply wait downstairs, then reconsidered. She barely knew Belinda, and in general, only considered the woman her problem because they were living in the house. After years of trying to stand up to her own parents, she wasn't eager to be dragged into another power-struggle between parent and child, and she wanted Ceri to believe she could do it, and thus, actually do it. Still, her concern for her girlfriend won out, and after a few moments, she followed the redhead upstairs, lingering in the hall outside the room, deciding she would only come in if things seemed to get violent. A bunch of screaming and yelling seemed likely.

Belinda wasn't accustomed to anyone barging into her room, much less the brat that she was matron over. Since Ceri had let her "friend" move into the house without Belinda's permission, the two had been nothing but a nuisance. Belinda had stayed in her room for the most part, mostly because she was unsure of the relationship between the girls. But this was too much. Ceri thought she was kicking her out? The woman rose to her full height and picked up her wand from the desk. "I should think not. This is my house." Ceri could feel her nerves slipping a little. Anti appeared around the corner and Ceri tried to maintain her heart rate. "This... this is my house, actually." Her voice wavered a second and that emboldened Belinda. "What makes you think that, girl?" This was a bad idea, Ceri thought to herself. She couldn't stand up to Belinda! This woman was terrifying. The girl threw another sidelong glance at her girlfriend. Antigone believed in her, so she must. "Belinda, this house belongs to me. Not you. It... it was willed to me. Get out." The house was willed to the girl?! Lionel was definitely keeping secrets from her. Belinda's arm snapped up, pointing her wand at the girl. Ceri took a step back, but raised her wand as well. "Belinda, you know I'm better than you. I... I won't hesitate." Ceri glanced at Anti, then gripped her wand tighter.

Anti wasn't shocked when the older woman pulled her wand, but she was not overly alarmed. Belinda, although spiteful and cruel, did not strike her as a complete moron, and she was willing to bet the woman wouldn't want to risk her own skin to hurt her stepdaughter, especially with a witness. "There are two of us and one of you," she said flatly, sounding almost bored. "If she doesn't hex you out that window, I just might. Or, even better, we can take this to court and really drag it out. I wonder how that would go for you." Her gray-blue eyes were akin to iron as she stood in the door-frame, wand in hand but not raised.
