Jordan coughed again, his lungs trying to expel water that had probably never been there, and remembered he was in a graveyard in time to keep himself from spitting. "s**t," he said, and got slowly to his feet, nodding to Horace. "I ******** hate dying." The candlestick got a glance, but he had neither seen the figure that left it nor realized that it hadn't been there a few moments before.

He turned, hearing Mik's voice, more distant than he expected. "Mikael? Stay where you are, we'll come to you," he called. The fog must have confused Mikael, led him away from them, maybe with a hallucination like the one Jordan had had.

For a moment, he thought that the sound he heard was footsteps, maybe Mik ignoring his request and coming back toward them, but the sound quickly resolved into hoofbeats, drumming steadily closer. "Do you hear that?" Jordan asked cautiously. The fog seemed to be growing thicker all around them as they moved toward Mik. The hooves grew louder, heralding the approach of something, or of nothing. Was it another specter of the fog, or something more solid?

The figure that burst from the hazy embrace of the fog seemed to tower over the humans, the massive black horse rearing high, its rider booming a deep and mocking laugh. Shadows trailed it in a shifting crowd, wisping, dissolving and reforming behind and around it. It lifted its jack-o-lantern head from its shoulders in a swooping, triumphant motion, flames trailing from the cruel, roughly cut features. Sparks leaped out and away from the motion in a scattering arc, and some of them landed in dry leaves, on old wood, catching with an unnatural ease and speed. Leaves and brush began to burn all around them, flames racing up the bark of a nearby tree, then another.

"Think we found it," Jordan said, unnecessarily. "Mikael, summon, you're going to have to fight this one! We need your help!" He took several steps to the side to give himself room to summon. Ferros materialized in his hand in a hurried, eager swirl, the leaping flames glinting off his metal.

You think we can hurt it? Jordan asked Ferros.

If fire doesn't help we'll just keep hitting it, the dragon answered, an undercurrent of amusement lacing his words.

Quote:
81- 100: BOSS ENCOUNTER:
- The hoofbeats grow closer and closer until they're thunderous in volume. Atop a black horse as gargantuan as itself, the dullahan roars out of the fog, streaks of grey along its shadowy form revealing its Insanity. The horse rears high, forelegs kicking high, and shadows form around the dullahan in wispy shapes. It laughs, deep and wild, and every mocking bark echoes through the woods.

Holding its its fiery pumpkin head high leads to the worst possible outcome. Sparks fly, jumping to the detritus littered around the forest, and before long, trees are set aflame. As every minute passes, it spreads further and further, until you are surrounded in a blaze.

You better hurry.

- BOSS MECHANICS: This boss is gigantic headless horseman that has 100 HP.

Every time you attack the boss (following the general battle rules), you TAKE 8 damage. Make sure to tally the boss's total HP (the damage you did to it) at the bottom of your post as well as your total HP and the damage you did that round. If the boss's HP hits 0, you have defeated it, and your team can now take the portal back.

Mikael was just about on the brink of a full blown panic when he heard the voices of Jordan and Horace behind him, turning around rapidly and running towards where it sounded like they had been.

He only stopped when Jordan's command to stay put reached him, freezing up stock still like a frightened deer. He spotted the other two men just as something much, much larger thundered between them.

He hadn't fought much before at all, but the forest was catching fire and in the blind moment he found the rifle sprung into his hands as if he'd never even had to call it up. He was too close for it to be fully effective but aimed and fired regardless with a gunshot that rung out with a loud bark of sound even above the crackling fire.

It glanced from the mighty steed ineffectually and a flailing hoof caught him and sent him sprawling in the dirt with a yelp.

"You do a lot of dying?" His tone was joking but Horace hovered as Jordan coughed. Hallucinations could ******** a person up pretty bad. It seemed like the sun hunter was (mostly) okay, however. He looked towards Mikael's voice just as the drumbeat of hooves reached his ears. Nodding sharply at Jordan, his shoulders tensed, waiting.

Luckily, fear creatures like to be quite prompt at times. "Thank, Captain Obvious," he grumbled. "I'd aim for the head, but what could be the point?" The harsh laughter of the creature echoed in the trees surrounding them. It was meant to unnerve, demoralize, and it was a good tool, Horace thought distantly. Out of the corner of one eye, he saw Ferros swirl into action - the flames and sheer size of him intimidating as always. Horace was glad Jordan was on the same side as him. Mikael he paid little attention to, sure that the boy would not even summon. It was weird, he thought, to refer to him as a boy, when he was older.

Offense, offense, they needed a defense, maybe. Horace swung into action, thinking of probabilities even as he moved. It would depend on how hard the Dullahan hit. He slashed upwards into the horse's leg, wondering if it were possible to hamstring a creature made of fear. The kick that sent him almost flying back said, quite clearly, 'no'. At least Mikael had his weapon in hand, for once.

"More than I'd like - " But there was no more time for conversation, and all three of them had weapons in hand. Jordan didn't know Mikael well enough to know whether it should surprise him that the guy had summoned; he observed in passing that Mik had a rifle, a good ranged weapon if he knew how to use it. "Try to stay out of its reach," he called to Mik.

"I'd suggest aiming for the horse," he said to Horace, and suited actions to words, jumping forward to bring Ferros around into the horse's ribs. It returned the favor with a powerful kick that sent him skidding back, staggering.

Mikael didn't like hurting things, it made him flighty and scared, as if some sort of retribution would quickly come his way for being impolite. But this creature was easy to hit, it was so different from people, so alien and strange to his eyes that it made it easier to think it was just a fancy theme park ride, that the barking shots were just part of a game and that maybe there would be a stuffed toy to be won in the end.

His shot went wide again, but he tried to hit the horse this time.

It liked it no more than it had before and he finally tried to get some range after being kicked again.

"Don't think I can reach the rider so easily," he called back to Jordan. He didn't have a hammer the size of god or a gun, just his fists covered in bone and tendon. It'd have to be good enough. Horace darted in close and snapped a fist out into the joint of the horse's back leg. It stumbled, but recovered quickly. They needed to ground it.

Shaking his head to clear the brief bout of dizziness, he looked over at Mik. "Try to stay out of range, Mikael! Keep shooting!"

"Right, you're short-range," Jordan said, half to himself. There really wasn't any way that Horace could strike at the dullahan without being in easy range of its horse's powerful kick. Jordan had the same problem, but he at least had several feet of reach, and Mik could stay back further, although Jordan wasn't at all sure that the shifting crowd of shadows that wove around the dullahan and in and out of the flaming underbrush would be harmless.

He moved in and swung underhand, aiming for the barrel of the horse's body; if they could drop the horse and get the pumpkin-headed thing on foot, they might be better able to take it down. Assuming, of course, that the horse and rider weren't a single entity. Ferros struck with a heavy, satisfying thud, but the horse retaliated with a sharp hoof, knocking Jordan away from it again.

He backed up a few steps, caught his breath, and called, "Don't get too close if your shield gets low!" Depending on how tough this thing was, he thought, they might have to call for backup.

Mikael did what he was asked and backed up from the raging Dullahan as much as he was able, only to find that the fire was unpleasant and it was just as bad back there as it was up close to the thing.

"I don't like this!" he called out helplessly.

He acknowledged Jordan's words with a short nod. Mikael, however, earned a "Doesn't ******** matter! If you don't wanna hit it normally, just hit it when it kicks pe-" His words were cut off at the horse did just that. It kicked him.

He swung his arm out, catching the horse a glancing blow before stumbling back.

Jordan growled a curse at himself. He was the most senior hunter here, and he shouldn't be expecting a trainee who seemed inexperienced and afraid to know to be using defensive tactics rather than an all-out attack; it was his job to make sure their resources were being used effectively, and a mistake like that could be deadly. He circled toward Mik and called out, "If you see it getting ready to kick him, take a shot at it!"

He moved in fast and low, bringing Ferros around in a sideways arc that slammed into one of the horse's hind legs, making it stagger briefly. It kicked hard in return, but he'd gotten in a solid hit.

It was a lot to remember, a lot to deal with and Mikael was afraid and jumpy, his hands shaking when he held up his gun. He found the orders even more scary in the heat of the moment, Jordan directing him to his sensitive and adrenaline addled mind sounding like a scold, like he'd done something wrong.

He raised the rifle in an attempt to protect Horace from another kick, fired too soon and hit him instead.

Jannisari's runes glowed, the purple contrasting oddly with the orange of the flaming trees. His msucles tense and suddenly, instead of the heal he expected, something hit him squarely in the back. He whirled around to see Mikael standing there, aiming his gun. His first instinct was to walk up to the boy and punch him, but there were bigger fish to fry here. Namely one dullahan that was kicking the s**t out of him. He didn't need to be shot at, too.

"If you could hit the <******** enemy, thanks, idiot," he spat out before ducking off to one side, closer to the flames. With a deep breath, he watched the spark rise from his hands and quickly grow. It crashed down on him with a force that always left him teeth clenched, eyes wide. It was healing, but it damn well didn't feel like it. It felt like disappointment, as always.

Now he just had to avoid the blonde ********: 21 + 25 = 46

"Horace," and Jordan's voice was strained with tension. "Not now. What are your shields at? Low?" he called to both of them. Ferros's runes glowed a bright and steady red, holding a charge.

He stepped up to bring the hammer around and into the horse's body again. The momentum of the swing made the creature stumble and dance back towards him; its rider stretched out one booted foot to plant its sole against Jordan's chest and shove him back.

"Good hit, Mik, k-" He jerked his head around to look at Mikael, grateful for the good hit he'd just pulled off, just in time to see him curled up on the ground, no weapon. s**t. If Horace's shield felt thin, had Mikael's been that low? Or did he just de-summon? Turning his back on the dullahan had been a mistake. It lashed out, catching him on the shoulder blades and sending him stumbling. He flung out his arm, just catching it with the edge of his wrist blade.

"If your shield's gone, pendant out, now!" And then he was turning back to the enemy, because Horace only had so many eyes.
