And even that's not enough (when is it?), you have to crush something utterly, sometimes again and again, and it's not in her nature (she thinks) but that doesn't have to matter while you're here while you're on a job, and maybe it's Thane getting to her or maybe it's always been there gone unacknowledged or maybe it's been cultivated by the years at this place, and oh she'll question a great many things but she won't question this. There's no time to. (No want to, no need to.)

She advances in spite of the arrow and her arms are trembling and her grip is tight and her eyes are narrowed and the snow is still too loud and she can pick Chel out because she's colorful agains the snow and bare and scrapping to keep fighting regardless and Stormy can't help but admire it. She wants that back, that light in her eyes, that will to live.

There's little point in knocking a hunter's weapon out of their grasp since they can summon it back just as easily, but she does it regardless. It's symbolic, like many of the things she does. It's a message: it's over. So quickly even. She should feel proud of herself, but there's no room for that in the jar either.

"So you tell me." Chel's mouth is too damn big and even then she's mouthing off. One of her eyes is swollen shut from the blunt impact of the sword. It sends a message of her own:

No it's not.

A single battle didn't heal a festering wound, one that would no doubt consume at least one of the parties present. "Did she really die by a monster or did you off her too?"

We should get you to the infirmary. Say it. We should get you to the infirmary, that eye looks bad.

Sheathing the greatsword into the ground (shaking hands shaking hands), Stormy knelt beside her, almost slumping against her weapon. The snow barely seemed like anything at all in comparison to the adrenaline still pumping through her.

"Not a monster. A zombie did it."

"A zombie," Chel said with a hoarse laugh that broke into a cough. That was a bruised rib or something.

"Couldn't even save her from a ********' zombie." Chel closed her eyes and smiled to herself like Stormy had just handed her a cup of hot cocoa. Her fingers dug into the snow.

She should have called Jack or Chris or Abbi or any number of people that could help her cover her shame. At least this way she could make jokes.

"No, I couldn't."

Put some snow on it at least, helps keep the swelling down.

"Someone else was with her when it happened." Would that matter to Chel? Probably not. But Stormy knows the power of answers and gives them to her even without getting herself. She owes Chel that much, at least when it comes to Nevada. "Her weapon had broken. In a way, it broke her too. She kept spiraling towards the end."

Chel said nothing at first. God her neck was so close. Chel had big hands that formed sloppy circles. Yet she didn't even have the strength to even summon her bow, let alone overpower the girl.

"Shoulda gone with her," was what she eventually said. "God do you ev'r stop feelin' bad for yerself?" She was interrupted by another cough and the motion jarred a little more blood out of her crusted lip. "Do us all a favor an' ********' off yerself or shut the ******** up."

The breath she took was audible. You don't think I've thought about--

"What was the point of fighting me?" she asked once more. "Is it because of Nevada, or because you just hate me?"

"You won't get s**t outta me just 'cause you ask all nice like."

Incessant questions on twitter, big doe-y eyes. Chel didn't buy it. Not when she hid a stinger under that bonnet.

"Then I guess I can wait until I knock you down again," Stormy replied with a little more bite. "I'm guessing that's what it's gonna be like? Just picking stupid fights until you win?"
PostPosted: Sun Mar 13, 2016 9:45 pm

"And you keep askin' questions." Chel finally opened the good eye. "Damn. Yer more obnoxious than me. Some free advice- don't transfer t'death."

She fell back against the snow. "Caelius'd eat you alive." A thought occurred. "On second thought- come on over."

"That's not being obnoxious."

A beat.

Grabbing a fistful of snow, she slapped it onto Chel's face--most of it concentrated around the swollen eye.

"That's being obnoxious."

She braced against her weapon and made to get to her feet, wincing as her shoulder began to complain.

With the snow in her face, Chel was confronted with a thought that actually did quiet her.

Stormy- Lina- might in fact be a person.

It was easy to label people- murderer, object of jealousy, angel, innocent. It was harder to look past that and Chel was too much of a lionheart to not even try.

She sat up and shook the snow off of her head. She told herself it was to fight back but she wasn't going anywhere with the way she had to clutch her side just to breathe.

She let Lina leave. She had a phone call to make after all. It was only once the girl was out of sight that she let her breath go and she let the pain sting her eyes. That sword had done more damage than she'd let on.

If only she had known. If only she could have the bitter satisfaction of pointing out that little irony.

But Stormy kept moving without looking back. She could hear Chel moving (loud snow) but knew better than to try and offer her a hand up. Maybe a different time. Maybe in the next fight that would inevitably crop up.

She almost found herself looking forward to it.

On the other end of the line were the telltale sounds of Jack cooking: a distant iPod playing, the scrape of a fork against a pan. "Hey, where are you?" he asked. "We had a box of pasta salad in the cabinet from I dunno ******** when, thought I'd give it a shot. Think I put too much broccoli. You want cheese on it?" Did pasta salad go with cheese...?

"God that sounds nasty," Chel said, clearly short on breath. She'd intended to explain over the phone but she had a sudden anxiety about it all. What if he'd berate her? He'd get mad-

"Lots of cheese."
