Thoth blinked, the monotone words striking a chord and the voices shifted again, wanting to reach out and hug this Freshling close to warm up her frozen bones.

"You aren't hideous! Look at you, you're fresh and healthy!" Thoth gently took her hand, pulling it away from her sweater to hold warmly. If nothing else, Thoth was soft and fluffy. "I'm a Hybrid. My body is weird compared to the pure-breds too. There are so many Nightmares that are some mix or somehow different...how can they judge you??" Thoth brought her hand up to the strange Geist 'fluff' that Thoth was certain was responsible for the voices as if to prove a point. "See?"

Joselyn looked at him flatly. She appreciated him for trying, at least. Being a hybrid would have been a blessing. But with one hand removed from her tight grip around her sweater, she figured it was time to face the music and show Thoth the truth.

Hooking a clawed finger around the inside of her collar, Joselyn pulled the neck of her sweater down, revealing a wide crack stretching across from one side of her fact to the next, and as her wide, full lips parted, revealing two rows of long, serrated teeth like a shark, the freshling asked in return. "Do you ... ? They can judge me plenty ... and they do every day."

Thoth blinked. "How is that any weirder than me having geist voices in my head? Or another Hybrid having pieces of three different races? We all have our shadows to face." Thoth squeezed her hand warmly. The teeth didn't frighten them at all. If anything, the gash of a mouth just made her look fierce, strong. And that was very appealing for someone as timid as Thoth.

/Maybe if you spend enough time with this one, some of that strength will rub off on you. You need to be stronger, because you're so very, very weak.../ the voice whined but Thoth offered a gentle smile to Jocelyn and ignored it.

"Hybrids are normal." she countered, giving a gentle shrug. "I mean, you have some people who are traditionalists, but that's a pretty dead belief. That races shouldn't mix. I suppose that sort of stuff stops mattering when the entire existence of Nightmares and Daydreams nearly ends itself. Hating mutants never went out of fashion." her eyes narrowed the a bit at the mention of 'geist voices'. What did that mean?

"Is a geist playing a trick on you? Did you piss one off? I hear some of the more vengeful and playful of geists like to pull pranks on people to get them back or to show their affection. Burvia --- eer. I mean. My mom now. She's a geist. She has four kids of her own. All younger than me; all partially geist. Bur -- mom. Was apparently like that when she was younger, but she grew out of it. The kids don't really seem to be that way. They're all fairly mild mannered." She stopped talking then, glancing at her held hand ... nobody had touched her like that before. It was a curious feeling.

Thoth blinked again, another new thought. What if this voice was coming from something outside of them? What if it was the voices of their lost sisters? Or a geist parent? Obviously Thoth had a geist parent somewhere. "Could it be...?" Thoth asked, a tinge of hope in the sad voice. "I'm so afraid that...it's just...something wrong with me..."

/One more thing wrong with you. This is why they didn't want you. You're a mess. Falling apart at the seams.../ the voice droned in a wheedling tone. Only, this time, Thoth listened to it differently than usual. It did sound...different than their own voice. But did that prove it was coming from some external source?

"...So, you have lots of other siblings, then?" Thoth asked awkwardly, trying to let that captivating thought slide away. There was no way for Thoth to prove or disprove it now... All they could do was keep aware and pay attention and maybe in time they'd be able to figure out the voices.

Still, they held her hand, grateful beyond words that she hadn't pulled away.

Joselyn pursed her lips a little in thought. So, what if it was something wrong with him? "Well, you just said we all have our shadows to face. If it does end up being something wrong with you, I guess you'll have to learn to face it someday. But for now, I guess be skeptical and open to what it might actually be. Maybe try talking to it sometime. Might be useful in figuring out its source sometime. Must feel kinda funny having someone poke around in your head like that. I wonder how strong with magic you have to be to stay in someone's head."

He was still holding her hand. Wow, this was. Kinda weird. Except that it wasn't weird. It /should/ have been weird, but instead it was just plain nice. Which made it even weirder.

"I do." Jose said simply, chewing on her lower lip a little. Was this ... what friendship was? So easy and accepting? Finding common ground to share? Joselyn supposed it was. Well, what did one do with friends?

"Uh. Hey. Did you maybe wanna come home with me today and like. Meet my family? Maybe come hang out with me and my younger siblings. Unless you wanna go and do your homework ... ? Sounds more boring, truthfully."

Thoth's sad expression lifted for the first time and the teal eyes widened, revealing a bright, surprisingly pretty colour. "Really? Could I? I promise I won't get in the way! I won't even touch anything, I'll just tuck out of the way!" Thoth squeezed her hand, trembling a little in nerves and hope.

Thoth braced themselves for the inevitable snide remarks, and found for once, the voice was silent. There was no naysaying, and no push. This strange, neutral silence was rare and Thoth couldn't tell if in the wake of the incessant remarks they felt relieved or lonelier than ever. Instead, Thoth put all of their focus on Jocelyn and found a genuine smile blooming on their pale chubby face.

Joselyn flashed a wide, toothy grin that seemed to take up literally half of their face as Thoth smiled. Such a rain cloud suddenly parting to let the sun through was a brilliant thing, and this little rain cloud called Thoth was no exception. "Of course!" she said, a brighter tone to her own voice as she spoke with a bit more emotion, much like she did with her own family back home. "I wouldn't offer it if I wasn't serious."

Reaching out to take his other hand in hers, she gave his hands a definite squeeze before releasing them. "Follow me, eh? We'll meet up with my siblings on the carpool home and then you can meet mom ... " Jose fixed her bag, tightening the strap and leading the way towards the door. "Besides. I think our teacher probably wants to go home now." Joselyn didn't even offer an apologetic smile towards the teacher, looking back over the shoulder to check that Thoth was actually following her.

"We better hurry, tho. Otherwise we might miss the next portal."

Nodding furiously, Thoth snatched their bag and stuffed all of the things off the desk and into it in a haphazard pile lest they get forgotten. Half hooking the strap over one arm and half dragging the bag behind scrambling feet, they fell into file behind Jocelyn, beaming up at her eagerly.

"Is there anything I should know? Any household rules? I want to make a good impression! I've never been to a home before..."

Joselyn gave a small shake of her head and offered a small smile. "No, my adoptive parents are pretty cool. So long as everyone treats eachother fairly and nicely and we don't trash the place, they're pretty laid back and accepting. They're just glad the house isn't in a constant state of ruin all the time, being so full and what have you."

She patted his shoulder gently. "Don't worry. You're likeable. You'll do fine. Plus you'll be with your own. Burvia and I will be the only pure-breeds there. Everyone else will be a hybrid. When we get to the portal I'll point out my siblings, and we'll meet them on the other side."

She just knew it'd go smashingly. He'd fit right in with their little family ... Joselyn was sure of it.
